While an X and Y axis might seem logical, times are influenced by new and unusual markers — now there’s the new Z axis and all of its issues to deal with. Welcome to today!\n\nI am not so very old, but even in my time I have seen cycles develop and follow a pattern. So, since I have a bunch of friends in the movie effects industry, let’s use those companies as examples. \n\nSo, in the beginning it was pretty much [Ray Harryhousen](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7amfxTp6Oiw), or the like. In the 70’s George Lucas and his buddies realized film making needed a little extra wiz-bang and created ILM, which was birthed around the [Star Wars franchise](https://www.theneweconomy.com/business/how-star-wars-changed-the-special-effects-industry). After this point, tech jumps were triggered every time a new studio launched. After George Lucas, in the 80’s a guy named James Cameron with buddies Stan Winston and Scott Ross introduced [Digital Domain](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H3qIJjatR8A), birthed right out of the ashes from the Terminator franchise. Another “tech renaissance” in the 2000’s emerged via Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings and [WETA](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hzrC6VMM1Xc). Just to keep it honest, all three major digital effect studios have Oscar’s to prove their stamp in film making history. As for these studios built from passion, it has always been about pushing the perimeters, not names like today. \n\nBut we ask about today — what and how have things changed? The greatest change from Ray to WETA is technology. Tech, while making amazing things possible, also lets us hang onto ideals that don’t necessarily match skills. Truth is, we are all good at something, just not the same things. \n\nThe digital world has now become fused with our physical world to the point of no return. Tech will replace jobs; best to be on the end where you are in-charge of the tech. Want a job in this cerebral-digital world? Then you’d better learn how to play the creative game of applying your skills to this ever-changing world. This should not be a fear but rather a reality and acceptance. [It’s time to regroup](http://adage.com/article/media/netflix-makes-acquisition-comic-book-publisher/310048/?utm_source=digital_email&utm_medium=newsletter&utm_campaign=adage&ttl=1502821190&utm_visit=957184). \n\nI feel that in the new tech world, the power is in the reimagining of how business runs. In the beginning it was just basic competition, say Hewlett Packard and IBM for instance. Now, when you think of tech companies you might say Amazon, who pretty much sells just about anything; Movies, Books, Food. This is a new phenomenon. Tech consuming the old Norman Rockwell of American local grocery stores. If you are old enough to remember Sears as a catalog store, then in theory, Amazon is doing what happened in the 1900’s. Time to get with modern tech and change the way you think. \n\nChange is inevitable but it is more important at changes like this to have an honest perspective. There are going to be some growing pains; Time Warner had one with the AOL merger; Rupert Murdock’s (News Corp) with [My Space](http://money.cnn.com/2014/10/29/technology/wsjd-murdoch-myspace/index.html). Funny thing is, people need to learn and respect how important those folks that came before are and learn from their lessons. Ego in the business world can get you only so far; true success is about understanding who you are and why you are in this businesses, day in and day out. \n\nWe are also in a generational shake-up which is intensified by technology. Here is the rub I have with the generational tech battle. I would think that the younger generations would have greater respect for those who have made the true journey from the beginning. I remember in the old days of animation, when Ray Harryhousen came to visit the studio of the [California Raisins (Will Vinton Studios)](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kka0jDxzzQo), everyone on the studio floor was in awe of what this man stood for. Today, tech gens seem to only look forward. The true step to success is with clear vision, and respect for the journeys that tech has made to get to TODAY. \n\nThe new world of business as I see it is more of a connected fabric of specialists. I think the next big tech development is not going to come from a huge monster company but rather small, self-sustaining think-tanks. This will be an agile environment with specialists brought together to create another ILM or WETA within a single project. The idea of creating a powerful wonder team, taking full advantage of current tech weaved together through a fabric of generations will be our new round of innovation. That is the wold of animation and the world of visual effects. In fact we are living in such a world of hybrids now that maybe they should be viewed as different sides of the spectrum. It is important to think about color and message.\n\nAnimation seems to be more about breathing life into in animate objects and visual effects seems to be about the special magic dust that blends and brings created worlds together.\n\nWith this said... I am reminded of the two films... the first film I ever saw that was color effected by the early crews over at ILM was \"Dreams\". This film was truly a ground braking transformation of over colorized landscapes to give the film a dream like atmosphere. \"Dreams\" was crafted by Japanese film maker Akira Kurosawa.\n\nAnd the second film that made me remember \"Dreams\" and is exactly how I thought they could push this technique even further was a film called \"What Dreams May Come\".       "body": "I remember my first introduction into what was then a new style of animation and illustration called Anime. Here in Portland we have this very cool little indie theater called Cinema 21 and I remember seeing \"AKIRA\" from the front row. I noticed that this style had more to do with graphics and layout.\n\nI've always been fascinated as to when they create full-on animation (or what we call \"money shots\") and when they cut corners and simplify in other scenes. So, I think in America we saw this new Anime style come through to us from the hands of Katsuhiro Otomo. Soon to follow would be the master Hayao Miyazaki with \"My Neighbor Totoro\".\n\nIt seemed to take awhile for Anime to really catch on here in the states, but once it did, it had everyone's attention. It is a style that shows a huge range of animating qualities, from the hyper-active loop cycles and exaggerations in \"Speed Racer\" to the beautifully paced, inspiring \"Spirited Away.\"  Akira was a ground breaker here in the US... My first introduction into computer technology was with the [Amiga 3000](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amiga_3000). I have seen a small nimble company [“Netflix”](http://www.businessinsider.com/how-netflix-bankrupted-and-destroyed-blockbuster-infographic-2011-3) take on what was then the behemoth video distribution and rental corporation of Blockbuster. I have seen what started as a small online book sales company devour all those mega mall book stores. Funny how in “You’ve got Mail” Meg Ryan was fighting the big behemoth storefronts, and to now see the reality of Amazon making them obsolete only a few years after the movie’s release.\n\nYes, it is true we are living in a world that is evolving faster and faster. As a kid I went from 8 track cassette tapes to CD’s. The technology between 8 track and CD is that of magnetic strip cassette tape vs. laser burned aluminized polycarbonate disc’s… originally created by Philips and Sony. That is neither here nor there.. truth is by the time I finish writing this there will be some new advancement changing the course of another old stable commodity. \n\nThe important thing now is to ask ourselves — where are we going? What are the issues of today that we need to address? We have a world of kids growing up with video games. For me that started with [“Astroids”(Atari)](http://www.freeasteroids.org/welcome/) and [“Defender” (WMS Industries)](http://www.tripletsandus.com/80s/80s_games/html5_Defender.htm#play) but today it is more like [“World of Warcraft” (Blizzard Entertainment)](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5rXei5k5PCM) or [“Knights of the Old Republic” (BioWare)](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fYWlvI8Ea6U). The XGen started the gaming interface world and now Y, Millennial, and the new Z generations have pulled it into a world of reality. \n\nAs the Real World collides with Virtual Reality, we are clearly headed into unknown territory. Is that good or bad? Only time will tell. Just this month I have had the privilege of working on [Avatar XPRIZE](http://www.xprize.org/visioneers/2016/teams/avatar), innovation designed to unite science, technology and entertainment for the greater good. As technology creeps ever so deep into our worlds, how do we tap into our humanity? We are at a very interesting intersection; a nexus between push-button creativity and the desire to feel the earth in our toes. So, how do we tap into brand building in a way that taps into our current social cultures?\n\nI remember when the “Mad Men” of my time wore clothes like Ron Burgundy in “Anchorman.” A time where people had a place in their fields of work. Today, individuals don’t like titles — they view these as a set up for a pecking order. They grew up in a world where everyone got a participation award. Now, these new entrepreneurs tend to rest the success of their entire business on their own marketing abilities. Yes, entrepreneurs have great ideas, plenty of determination and talent, but branding is a whole other world. \n\nFor instance, social media messaging, which is a big part of branding, works best when kept super simple. Know your message and get to the root of it quickly. How many clicks does it take to get to the center of a call-to-action? \n\nIt’s likely that a Facebook / Pinterest / Twitter blast, designed to create a stir, plus support materials in various media would drive audiences toward their database or website. Branding a company or organization should not be about money and more about eyeballs… you need to attract.\n\nWhat’s so funny now, is that companies, large and small, are all in the same boat, facing the same tech battles. Just so you know, tech goes both ways… it makes production easier but also takes work away from professionals who understand branding. Apps are cool but they can’t do it all. Truth is, success is more about strategy then ego. Take for instance a company like [“Starbucks”](https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B0xXglXumu7Fczh0THNMZmtKdDg/view) — creating a few quick animated social media blasts directing fans to special deals will go a long way. It is nice to create a look and style that can help carry on the personality of the company within the art itself. With in an App universe you might only have a choice between 4 or 5 options. Folks out there on the internet quickly become collectors of social media art. Why not have your product placement be that collectible?\n\nA theory of branding and marketing talks about push and pull as two separate approaches… we now live in the tech world which means, you need to expand your concept of marketing to include both. Although the goal is to increase sales, you really need to change that into increasing engagement. You need to create brand that attracts an audience or at least makes them smile. The internet has grouped all social groups into one gigantic pool. Making things go viral means letting your concept be understood quickly, so these little blasts need to be quick and to the point. They may actually only be part of a campaign; think of them as the ringer. Only remember, this is not about pushing your audience to engage, rather creating content that encourages them to pull themselves through and… click. If you want to go beyond one click, you need to keep them interested. This is where emotion comes in… let them be interested and they’ll find you interesting.\n\nSo, the next time you think about creating market awareness, think about more than just what an App can do, and more about who you are and who you want to attract. Your brand starts with your materials and a $2 App will not give you the individual identity that your company or product needs.
