| title | Learning German online for free - my experience |
| body | Probably I am getting boring, but I can´t stress enough how important it is to learn as much German as possible BEFORE you come to Germany. If by some miracle I had had a chance to move back in time, that´s absolutely the first thing I would have done, as it not only makes getting a visa much easier, but it is a complete life-changer once you are there. But how to do it, if there is not too much money to be spent on that or maybe no time to attend a course in a completely different part of the city? Well, sure, online, but where to start so you don´t drop it frustrated after just a few days? How to navigate in the jungle of websites offering German courses and most importantly - which ones are really for free? No matter if you are an absolute beginner (you can´t think of any single German word you know) or you have already had some German classes before, I would definitely begin with duolingo. You can download it as a free app (that´s what I did) or use the duolingo website (I know some people who swear that on the website it´s better, but personally I have never used it). Then you have to select "your" language (not necessary your native language, but the one you understand really well, so it may be Arabic, Englisch, French, whatever you like), next you select that you want to learn German and you can choose if you want to start from zero or you would prefer to take a quiz assessing your level. There is where you start and little by little you get to know first very easy words and then some sentences. The biggest adventages: you don´t need to wonder how to pronounce anything as the app reads every word for you and even asks you to read it aloud and record it in order to check if it really sounds like German. The tasks are easy, the graphic design nice for the eye and you really practise all skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing and it is 100% free, what means that you need to put up with some adds evey now and then, but it is not too bad. You are also frequently asked if you want to upgrade to an add-free (paid) version, but you don´t and that´s fine. I have been using the free version for years now and even though I have passed B1 already some time ago, I still learn a lot there. Can you really learn a language there? I am sure you do and I personally know people who did using exclusively duolingo. First you get to know some funny sentences like "I have an apple" and "The cat likes the dog", but don´t lose trust in the whole! The courses are really carefully designed so you can achieve your language goal, keep doing! Is there any way to accelerate your progress? What really works for me is to write down the new words and repeat them. After just a few days you will be impressed how many new words you have learnt! (I love counting them) Have them in your notebook and on post-its everywhere you can see them a lot. Additionally, I like taking pictures of my new words so that I can have a look at them in the situations where I have just my phone with me. Most people remember faster when they can see something, but make sure you repeat the words aloud, so you get familiar with the way they sound. Learn the whole sentences (that´s very useful especially in the beginning when you are never sure about the right word order or endings) and don´t be afarid to make your own sentences similar to the one you are learning. If you are learning "I have an apple", think how to say "I have a cat", "I have a dog", "I have a banana", "I have a sister" etc. The only thing I sometimes miss about the duolingo is grammar. You will find there some basic explanations when you make a mistake, but sometimes you just want to know why this is right and the other wrong. In this case I would recommend the Passau courses "Deutsch - Aber Hallo!" You can easily find them online just writing "Deutsch aber hallo pdf a1" (or a2, b1, b2, they have pdf exercises till the Level C2). If you need to check, if your answers are right, look online for "Deutsch aber hallo a1 answers pdf". This is really a great collection of grammar exercises for free. How many words you need to start speaking? I would say at least 1000 for a very basic communication and about 2500 to pass the B1 exam. It seems really a lot, but every big journey starts with the first step, take a challenge, start learning, Count your words and you will be surprised how fast they add on. Good luck! |

Then you have to select \"your\" language (not necessary your native language, but the one you understand really well, so it may be Arabic, Englisch, French, whatever you like), next you select that you want to learn German and you can choose if you want to start from zero or you would prefer to take a quiz assessing your level. There is where you start and little by little you get to know first very easy words and then some sentences. \n\nThe biggest adventages: you don´t need to wonder how to pronounce anything as the app reads every word for you and even asks you to read it aloud and record it in order to check if it really sounds like German. I have been using the free version for years now and even though I have passed B1 already some time ago, I still learn a lot there.\n\nCan you really learn a language there? I am sure you do and I personally know people who did using exclusively duolingo. First you get to know some funny sentences like \"I have an apple\" and \"The cat likes the dog\", but don´t lose trust in the whole! The courses are really carefully designed so you can achieve your language goal, keep doing!\n\nIs there any way to accelerate your progress? If you are learning \"I have an apple\", think how to say \"I have a cat\", \"I have a dog\", \"I have a banana\", \"I have a sister\" etc.\n\nThe only thing I sometimes miss about the duolingo is grammar. You will find there some basic explanations when you make a mistake, but sometimes you just want to know why this is right and the other wrong. In this case I would recommend the Passau courses \"Deutsch - Aber Hallo!\" You can easily find them online just writing \"Deutsch aber hallo pdf a1\" (or a2, b1, b2, they have pdf exercises till the Level C2). If you need to check, if your answers are right, look online for \"Deutsch aber hallo a1 answers pdf\". This is really a great collection of grammar exercises for free.\n\nHow many words you need to start speaking? I would say at least 1000 for a very basic communication and about 2500 to pass the B1 exam. It seems really a lot, but every big journey starts with the first step, take a challenge, start learning, Count your words and you will be surprised how fast they add on. Good luck!",

| title | Impressions from Germany : A Little Gem in a Valley |
| body | Big cities are for sure very interesting, but every time you visit a little place like a village of Lonau at the edge of the Harz Mountains, you have an impression you are in a completely different world, where even times runs much slowlier. Let me share with you a few pictures from a walk to Lonau. In the first picture you can see two welcome boards "Welcome to Lonau and to the National Park of Harz". Lonau is indeed located on the very edge of the national park. If you are wondering about the language of the board below, it´s Esperanto, a speciality of Herzberg am Harz, a little bigger town to which Lonau belongs. In the coat of arms of the village (yes, German villages have their own coats of arms, even if they have about 200 inhabitants like Lonau) you can see in blue two rivers coming together, that´s the Little Lonau and the Great Lonau. In other words, both rivers leading to Lonau are called Lonau, but if you think of acusing the Germans of lack of imgination, don´t forget they have invented coats of arms for every place, no matter how little it is. In the coat of arms you can also see a big black bird, which is a grouse, a species successfully bred there, a kind of leaf and a symbol for mining. There used to be brown coal mines in almost every place in Harz. The way is the goal. So true about the road to Lonau! You walk 4km like this, in a valley between two ranges of hills. In every season it is just beatiful. On your right there is Great Lonau, so you are accomanied by the sound of water all the way. And this one already taken in Lonau. You can´t imagine how narrow the streets are. First, there is really limited space in the valley, but the village is also really old. I once read, it was first metioned in the 13th century. That´s inside a restaurant "Zur Quelle". You still need to have a valid Corona test to have a sit, but it´s so nice to have a cup of coffee after a walk. The Little Lonau with hardly any water at the moment. The church is very small, but it has so many nice details. You can enter the church, have a look, sit down if you wish and think of all the people who used to come here all the years since it was built. Just next to the church a little house where used to be a school in the years 1840-1910. Taking into consideration that Lonau has about 200 inhabitants now, you can expect too many children to live here now, so for more than 100 years now they have to attend a school in Herzberg. That´s an example of a B&B, because it is so much bigger, but many houses are owned by people who come here just to spend long weekends and holidays, and they stay empty for most of the year. There are always some hills in your backyard, if you live in a valley. And here almost a half of the village as one can see it from a side. I´m always impressed by all the care and love showing in all the details of house decoration. You walk past doors like these and it´s more interesting than some art galleries. You are being watched too. Also at night. A quite surprising color here. Every time I see turquoise I think of my country. A view from a bridge over the Little Lonau with the church in the background. Lonau says good by and till the next time! If you were wondering, if Germans still use phone boxes looking at the previous picture, yes they do, but as "book boxes" where you can always take a few books from, and once you have read them, just bring them back or replace them with some others. Another reason to go to Lonau to have a look what´s new in the book box there. I´m sure I will walk there soon again, and I hope you have enjoyed my impressions from there too. |

| title | Impressions from Germany: Duderstadt and its Timber Framed Houses |
| body | Some time ago I heard about a photo contest, in which the participants were supposed to submit pictures most acturately representing Germany. Still in Morocco, I didn´t have really have a chance to send a nice photo taken in Germany, but still the topic made me think what this one picture could possibly show. You can find skyscrapers in every big city all over the world, also modern factories grow in most unexpected places. Germany has beautiful nature, but that´s quite similar to other European, or even non-European counties of similar climate. Back then, as I mostly admired Germany for its achievements in the area of envirenment protection, I thought of a wind turbine park on a green hill. Such views are really pretty common here, but I have seen it also in other places (including Morocco with the only difference being the rather disappointing shade of green of the hill). But every time I see timber framed houses, I think of Germany, and I immediately think the picture was taken somewhere here. Actually, this type of architecture as in the first picture can be found in some other countries, however, while elsewhere it is an exception, in Germany you can find whole towns built this way, and if you are fond of this type of architecture, you can visit them along the so called German Timber-Frame Road leding through about 100 towns worth seeing because of their distinctive timber framed buildings. Can you imagine, that this German Timber-Frame Road goes through my hometown in Germany? As a result, I can easily visit a few other places famous for this type of architecture, and one of them, Duderstadt, is situated just 20 km away. Let me share with you a few pictures from my recent trip there. When you walk downtown, it looks like all the houses there are timber framed, and indeed, the historic Old Town has almost exclusively such architecture, but other than that, 70% of all houses in the town are timber framed, which are about 500 houses. If you just wonder, how comes 500 houses make 70% of all houses in a town, Duderstadt hast about 9000 inhabitans, so it is of a slightly different scale than Hamburg or Munich. There is no serious Old Town without an Old Town gate, but look at the twisted roof! According to a legend, when the devil kept making the men of Duderstadt drink too much, the women somehow managed to scare him out of the town, but in the last attempt to stay in the place he grabbed the roof of the Old Town gate and twisted it. Another, more secular legend, talks about a strong wind causing this beautiful twist. Pedestrian zone downtown stretches between two quite big churches, one Catholic, Basilicum St. Cyriakus, and one Lutheran, St. Servatius, you can see in the next picture. We still have museums and places like this closed because of Corona, but suprisingly this church was opened, so I had a look inside. Unfortunately, because of the dim light inside, I wasn´t successful in taking beautiful pictures, but you can believe me, it was really impressive, in particular the stained glass windows. Not only beautiful colors, but I had an impression there were whole stories told in this pictures, maybe of saints or of some Bible figures, anyway, very intersting. A little water steam in the pedestrian are between two churches. There are many stores and cafes here, now opened if you show a negative test. In such a case you are free to enjoy you coffee and cake outside. A kind of well or fontain (in the moment without water) next to the Lutheran church. And here you can see another one closer to the Catholic church. In the background some of the most interesting timber framed hauses in the town. Just look at the pattern made of wood... Here additional decoration... THat´s probably my winner, not just beautiful patterns, pictures, but evn whole figures hanging out between the windows. Can you imagine living in such a house? That´s a hotel in the Market Square. Also like cut out from a picture book, and if you are interested in literature, Johann Wolfgann von Goethe, probably the most recognizable German writer, spend there the night from 13 till 14 December 1777. At the moment, German hotels can´t accept the tourists because of Corona, but once it is over, maybe you can even sleep in the same bed as the most famous German poet, if you decide to stay over the night in Duderstadt. And probably one of the most beautiful City Halls I have ever seen. Already on the first glance it looks like a mix of different styles and indeed it was constructed and reconstructed over many years. Over many doors you can see C+M+B+ some numbers. That´s a Catholic tradition according to which on January, 6th the Catholics should write by chalk on their door frames the initial letters of the the Latin phrase "Christus mansionem benedicat" (Christus bless this house) between the numbers of the current year, f.e. here it starts with the blessing for the year 2013: 20*C+M+B+13. The one for the year 2021 is then 20*C+M+B+21 (unfortunately not in this picture). Some say that that´s also a reference to the names of three kings or wise men who visited Baby Jesus in Bethleem shortly after he was born. According to this tradition their name were Casper, Melchior and Balthasar. And that´s a kind of inpressive rabbit in the gardens behind the city wall and a little garden house, of course also a timber framed one. |

"body": "\n\nSome time ago I heard about a photo contest, in which the participants were supposed to submit pictures most acturately representing Germany. Still in Morocco, I didn´t have really have a chance to send a nice photo taken in Germany, but still the topic made me think what this one picture could possibly show. You can find skyscrapers in every big city all over the world, also modern factories grow in most unexpected places. Germany has beautiful nature, but that´s quite similar to other European, or even non-European counties of similar climate.\nBack then, as I mostly admired Germany for its achievements in the area of envirenment protection, I thought of a wind turbine park on a green hill. Such views are really pretty common here, but I have seen it also in other places (including Morocco with the only difference being the rather disappointing shade of green of the hill). But every time I see timber framed houses, I think of Germany, and I immediately think the picture was taken somewhere here.\n\nActually, this type of architecture as in the first picture can be found in some other countries, however, while elsewhere it is an exception, in Germany you can find whole towns built this way, and if you are fond of this type of architecture, you can visit them along the so called German Timber-Frame Road leding through about 100 towns worth seeing because of their distinctive timber framed buildings.\n\nCan you imagine, that this German Timber-Frame Road goes through my hometown in Germany? As a result, I can easily visit a few other places famous for this type of architecture, and one of them, Duderstadt, is situated just 20 km away. | body | Big cities are for sure very interesting, but every time you visit a little place like a village of Lonau at the edge of the Harz Mountains, you have an impression you are in a completely different world, where even times runs much slowlier. |
