Su nombre completo era James Crawford Angel. Como su abuelo se llamaba James Edward Angel, para evitar confusión entre la familia, el utilizaba el nombre Crawford durante su infancia y adolescencia. El comenzó a utilizar el nombre Jimmie, con ese poco convencional deletreo, cuando era veinteañero.\n\nAunque era ciudadano estadounidense, el pasó buena parte de sus cincuenta y siete años fuera de los Estados Unidos. El vivió por el amor a volar y a la aventura.\n\n\nSalto del Angel\nAcerca de Jimmie Angel existen muchas historias o leyendas que han sido reportadas por diversos escritores y periodistas en libros y artículos de prensa. Que Jimmie aprendió por si mismo a volar a los catorce años o antes, es parte de la leyenda. Las historias sobre que él fue un as del vuelo del Royal British Flying Corps en la Primera Guerra Mundial, que creó una fuerza aérea para un jefe militar en el desierto del Gobi, o que trabajó como cazatalentos para Lawrence de Arabia no han podido ser verificados. Lo que si es cierto es que Jimmie Angel fue una aventajado piloto y amaba a Centro y Sur América, y muy especialmente a Venezuela.\n\nAl terminar la Primera Guerra Mundial, se convirtió en piloto civil en los Estados Unidos trabajando como piloto ambulante, piloto de pruebas, piloto de acrobacias para películas, e instructor de vuelo. El consideraba rutinaria, muy estructurada, la vida de los pilotos de líneas aéreas comerciales. “Sería como manejar un autobús” le respondió a su hijo menor Rolan cuando le preguntó cerca al final de sus días por que no había obtenido un trabajo como piloto de aerolínea.\n\nLa primera vez que voló al sur de la frontera de los Estados Unidos fue durante los 1920s cuando gracias a sus habilidades como piloto encontró empleo en remotas e inexploradas regiones de México, Centro y Sur América. Trabajando durante los 1930s y 1940s para compañías de búsqueda de recursos naturales – oro, diamantes y petróleo – y con expediciones científicas y gubernamentales, Jimmie Angel encontró la libertad y el entusiasmo que deseaba fervientemente.\n\nParte de su trabajo, especialmente en Venezuela, tuvo un impacto duradero. Sus exploraciones en la Gran Sabana en el Sureste de Venezuela entre 1933 y hasta 1942 ayudaron a estimular el interés internacional en la región y sirvió de preámbulo a la expedición científica organizada por William H. Phelps y el Museo Americano de Historia Natural en 1937-1938. La Gran Sabana fue explorada, acotada, y abierta a la evaluación científica sistemática, en parte, gracias al trabajo de Angel para el Ministerio de Fomento y la comisión de límites en 1939.\n\nComo consecuencia del interés internacional y la exploración científica de la región, el enorme Parque nacional Canaima ha sido preservado y salvado del menosprecio que ha destruido muchos otros bosques y sabanas en Sur América.\n\nDe acuerdo a la leyenda, el primer viaje de Angel a Venezuela se realizó en los tempranos 1920s junto a un geólogo estadounidense apellidado McCracken. Ambos supuestamente se conocieron en un bar en Panamá y acordaron que McCracken le pagaría 5.000 dólares para volar hasta un lugar en el sureste de Venezuela. Ellos aterrizaron en un tepuy misterioso de la Gran Sabana y recogieron varios kilogramos de oro de un río sobre la montaña. McCracken moriría luego en Estados Unidos y Angel pasaría el resto de su vida buscando por ese perdido Río de Oro.\n\nNi documentos, ni informantes, han podido verificar la leyenda del Río de Oro. Esa historia contada por Jimmie Angel no puede ser verificada. Ciertamente Angel la contaba frecuentemente. Muchos de sus amigos y familiares creían dicha historia. Es difícil saber si sucedió o no realmente. No sabemos si dicha historia era tan solo una manera de atraer inversionistas en su búsqueda de oro. Lo cierto es que esa búsqueda fue una cruzada que duró el resto de su vida.\n\nJimmie Angel estaba obsesionado con el Auyántepui, un tepuy en forma de corazón con unos 700 kilómetros cuadrados que no aparecía en los mapas oficiales de la región antes de sus exploraciones. El creía que esa era el lugar en cual se encontraba el Río de Oro.\n\nEs difícil saber cuando una peculiaridad geológica es descubierta. Quizás nunca son descubiertas. Quizás su existencia gana reconocimiento al estar disponible ante una audiencia mayor y más diversa.\n\nEl Salto Angel pudo haber sido conocido por los indígenas Pemón que han vivido en el Valle de Kamarata en la región del Auyántepui por miles de años. O, debido a su localización en el interior del Cañón del Diablo y la aversión de los Pemón a acercarse al Auyántepui, el Salto pudo no haber sido descubierto por ellos antes de ser descubierto desde el aire.\n\nQuizás fue reportado en los diarios de previos exploradores. Pero hay numerosos saltos estacionales que caen desde el Auyántepui, de manera que es difícil saber a ciencia cierta si su existencia fue reportada antes que Angel anunciara a todos que había descubierto el salto de agua más alto del mundo. Su existencia fue reconocida por el mundo y fue descubierta ante todos gracias a las exploraciones de Angel.\n\nMuerte\nJimmie Angel sufrió una herida en la cabeza mientras aterrizaba su aeroplano el 17 de abril de 1956 en David, Panamá. Poco tiempo después del aterrizaje, sufrió un ataque al corazón. Tuvo varios problemas de salud durante los siguientes ocho meses, y fue internado en el Hospital Gorgas de la zona del canal de Panamá, para tratarle una neumonía. Finalmente moriría el 8 de diciembre de 1956 por una hemorragia cerebral.
