She was slightly hunched, well past 80, but don’t think of pushing her around. Her smile said:\n\n**“DGAF.”**\n\nI had just said:\n\n*“Thank you for accepting the offer. I am so excited to buy this house!”*\n\nTo which Mrs. O’Donnell had replied:\n\n*“I didn’t think anyone would buy it. Especially because the last tenant died there.”*\n\n# Why Real Estate Will Embrace the Blockchain #\n\nReal estate may have a staid reputation, but this is rapidly changing thanks to blockchain.\n\nBlockchain benefits include:\n\n## Fewer Middlemen ##\nThe classic example is title insurance. Moving titles to the blockchain will make real estate transactions more efficient and transparent. This could eliminate title insurance because titles are clearly documented.\n\nFewer middlemen also mean lower fees for all related transactions, not just title insurance.\n\n## Faster Transactions ##\nBlockchain could mean faster listings, title searches, and title transfers, all completed quickly and securely.\n\nThe whole process would move faster… maybe even eliminating escrow companies and others holding information behind paywalls.\n\n## More Data Security ##\nMoving digital property records, deeds, surveys, and plats to a public chain ensures records are accurate, accessible, and unalterable, resulting in….\n\n## Increased Transparency ##\n… for everyone in the process. Currently, multiple parties control information and profit from the friction and opacity. (Again; why it takes so long to close, with additional fees at every step.)\n\nBlockchain makes everything visible, boosting the credibility and trust between all parties. Equal access to information means faster transactions at lower costs. Just as quickly, they all started talking at once.\n\n*Shut down this conversation! This sale must go on!*\n\nMrs. O’Donnell had several people on her side of the table. I think she made this remark purposely. She wanted to reinforce * who worked for whom*.\n\n“Don’t think I’m a dottering fool,” was the subtext. She was cashing in her portfolio. She was going to say whatever she wanted to say. No one in that office was going to stop her, or show her any disrespect.\n\nDamn, I thought, as multiple people on her team rushed to assure my representatives that all was well.\n\n(Dead? Yes, they quickly clarified, but not the “bad kind” of dead people way, lacking volume thereof, and in a manner unlikely to instigate a bus tour stop. Okay, I said.)\n\nThe blockchain lesson I took away that day from Mrs. O’Donnell?\n\n# Embrace Transparency #\nMrs. O’Donnell wasn’t hiding this fact about her property. She knew I would find out, so, she chose to address it up front and let the handlers doing the deal, deal.\n\nMaybe, in the future as the real estate industry embraces blockchain, there will be significantly fewer people in the room. Fewer gasps at unexpected data points.\n\nWill the blockchain carry other information about a particular piece of real estate? More information than the notation of a deed passing between buyer and seller?\n\nMaybe.       "body": "Entrepreneurs are critical to the implementation and success of Ethereum. The ecosystem depends on their investment. So why do entrepreneurs have difficulty hiring Ethereum developers?\n\nA simple conclusion is a lack of talent. It’s obvious that there are, at present, only a tiny community of capable programmers. ConsenSys Academy’s efforts to train, hire, and retain this talent is one example.\n\nYet, something else is at play, too: communication.\n\n# Hiring Freeze versus Hiring Frenzy #\n\nA clever wordsmith will point out that the word “freeze” differs from the word “frenzy” by just two characters. Further note: the letters are “N” and “Y,” shorthand for the geography, New York, where much of this seismic technological shift is happening in the United States.\n\nWhat’s the big deal about two characters? Ask a programmer. Or a writer.\n\nCurrent conversation in the hiring space focuses on programmers. Almost all discussions overshadow the need for communicators. This must change.\n\nEntrepreneurs need the latter to find the former.\n\n# Idea Shortage #\n\n“More than anything, I think there is a shortage of good ideas,” says blockchain angel investor Shidan Gouran. Programmers — like creative sorts of all stripes — want to be involved in the interesting projects. Is your endeavor truly interesting?\n\nUntil entrepreneurs start envisioning blockchain, generally, and Ethereum, specifically, as a solution there are plenty of other coding challenges and platforms developers will preference, either economically or intellectually.\n\nTo answer the is it interesting question requires communicating what a project will do and why that matters. Economic appeal is easy. Intellectual or emotional appeal is more difficult. Get the latter two right by communicating the creativity necessary to unpack the problem and reassemble a solution.\n\nTherefore the first task of an entrepreneur is selling their idea — and even Ethererum itself. Given the shortage of Ethereum developers this involves selling non-technical stakeholders on the value of team retraining and/or the budgetary needs for recruitment.\n\n# Specificity #\n\nGreat ideas demand the confluence of differing perspectives. By virtue of this necessity a less technical founder may overlook the specificity needed to find and hire the best Ethereum developer. What, specifically, will this person need to deliver? What aptitudes or attributes will enhance these skills? All need to be enumerated.\n\nFor example, will the developer be building a blockchain from scratch? Will it be public or private?\n\nAn Ethereum developer will likely be building an application on top of blockchain. Do they know Solidity, Whisper, or Truffle? What is their existing programmatic framework?\n\nTechnical writers are required for explaining complexity in yellow papers or constructing technical knowledge bases. These writers are extremely close to the technology and often have computer science backgrounds. They are valuable because they communicate ideas to developers using their own language.\n\nWhat of speaking to the vastly larger, non-technical audience of investors and stakeholders? This is a different skillset. Here is where classic communicators shine.\n\nTrue communicators translate technical ideas into familiar constructs using plain language. The communication handle must be cranked constantly for any real business — or in this case, virtual machine — to run smoothly.\n\nDon’t discount how communication supports the recruitment and retention of development talent. A communicator speaks to a broader base and can elicit excitement not present in writing valued only for its technical chops.\n\n# Virtual Fishing Holes #\n\nFind tech-savvy communicators and you will have a greater chance of reeling in Ethereum developers to your team.\nLinkedIn may be the go-to solution for HR managers, but, best to linger where those already involved in blockchain technologies congregate.\n\n21.co, for example, connects entrepreneurs with subject matter experts. The SMEs are paid using in bitcoin. As such, they are already familiar with cryptocurrency, if only to convert it to fiat currency.\n\nOne better is Ethlance, the freelance platform where contributors are paid in Ether. To list a writing profile a freelancer must interact with the Ethereum network. In contrast to LinkedIn or 21 the listing alone demonstrates a familiarity with Ethereum-specific interactions, from creating a MetaMask wallet to paying gas fees.\n\nEntrepreneurs are critical for Ethereum to reach its potential. Much waste is produced on our behalf before it reaches us (e.g., buying in bulk still requires a logistics stream of waste before a product reaches the store.) The important thing is doing what you can as an individual. Thanks for helping more people consider their waste footprint.",
