      "body": "초기 빅뱅이론의 촉발은 1920-30년대 총기로 가득한 젊은 벨기에의 천체물리학자이자 로마 카톨릭 사제였던 '조르주 앙리 조제프 에두아르 르메트르(Georges Henri Joseph Edouard Lemaitre, 1894-1966)‘에 의하여 우주팽창론에 대한 당대의 최고 학자들과의 교류와 치밀한 수학적 증명을 통하여 ‘원시 원자(The Primeval Atom)’에 대한 과학적 가설로 학계에 알려지게 됩니다. 다음은 르메르트가 1931년 5월9일에 <네이처>에 서간형식으로 기고한 유명한 ‘빅뱅이론에 대한 최초의 선언문’한국어 번역본입니다.\n\n  \n 양자론적 관점에서 본 우주의 기원 \n\n조르주 르메트르\n\n   아더 에딩턴 경(Sir Arthur Eddington, 1882-1944))은 그의 논문(NATURE, Mar. 21, p. 447, ‘수학적 관점에서 본 세계의 종말’)에서 철학적이라는 이유로 현재의 자연계의 질서가 기원에 있어서 다른 양상으로 시작되었을 것이라고 추론하는 것에 대해서 불편한 심기를 지니고 있는 듯 합니다. 하지만 저는 오히려 최근의 양자론에서 보여주고 있는 것은 우주의 기원에 있어서는 현재의 자연적인 질서와는 아주 상이하게 차이를 가져올 것임을 제시하여주고 있다고 생각합니다. 양자론적 관점에서 볼 때 열역학 원리는 다음과 같이 진술될 수 있습니다. (1) 불변하는 일정량의 에너지가 각각의 양자들에게로 배분되어진다. (2) 각각의 구분되어지는 양자는 기하급수적으로 증가해 간다. 따라서 만약 우리가 시간을 거슬러 올라가게 된다면 우리는 양자들의 숫자는 점점 줄어들게 된다는 것을 발견하여야 할 것이며 종국에 우리는 우주의 전체 에너지가 축적되어 있는 몇 개의 또는 단 하나의 양자에게로 집중되어 있는 것을 발견하게 될 것입니다. \n   이제 원자적 진행 과정에서, 시간과 공간이라는 개념은 더 이상 정적인 개념이 아닙니다. 그 개념은 소수의 양자가 관여하는 개별 현상에 적용되었을 때에는 큰 의미를 가지지 못합니다. 만약 이 세계가 하나의 양자에서 시작되었다면 시간과 공간의 움직임은 태초의 순간에는 아무런 의미도 가지지 못했을 것입니다. 시간과 공간은 시원적인 양자가 충분한 숫자의 양자로 분리된 이후에야 실질적인 의미를 가지게 될 것이다. 만약 이런 가정이 옳다면 이 세계의 시초는 시간과 공간이 탄생하기 바로 직전에 이루어졌을 것이다. 나는 이러한 우주의 기원이 현재 우리가 살고 있는 자연계의 질서 속에서 충분히 가능할 수 있으며 그 누구의 비위를 거스르지도 않는다고 생각합니다. 아직 까지 우리는 이러한 케이스들에 대한 각각의 양자들에 대한 묶음을 계산 할 수 없기 때문에 상세하게 추적해나가기가 쉽지 않습니다. 예를 들면 원자핵은 고유한 양자로서 그리하여 양자의 수량으로 원자적 활동이 계산될 수 있어져야만 합니다. 만약 미래의 양자론 발전이 그러한 방향으로 돌려지게 된다면 우리는 전체의 질량을 가진 원자적 무게를 지닌 유일한 원자의 형태로서 우주의 기원을 기술할 수 있게 될 것입니다. 이러한 대단히 불안정한 원자는 일종의 초 방사능 과정에 의해 아주 작고 작은 원자로 나누어지게 됩니다. 이러한 과정에서 남겨진 것은 제임스 진스경(Sir James Jeans, 1877-1946)의 개념에 의하면 원자들이 생명을 주기까지의 저온의 수량의 원자 별들의 열을 육성합니다. 명백하게 전체의 진화과정에서 최초의 양자는 숨겨지지 않게 될 것입니다. 그러나 불확정 원리에 의하면 그것은 불필요한 것이다. 우리의 세계는 이제 어디서부터 실제로 일어나게 되었는지 이해하게 되었습니다. 세계의 전체의 이야기는 축음기 레코드에 기록된 노래처럼 최초의 양자는 아직 쓰여지고있지 않고 있습니다. 세계의 전체의 물질은 시작의 현존으로부터 기록되어야 할 것이지만, 그 이야기는 한 단계 한 단계씩 기록되어야 할 것입니다. \n\nLetters to Nature\n\nNature 127, 706 (9 May 1931) \n\nThe Beginning of the World from the Point of View of Quantum Theory\n\nG. LEMAÎTRE\n\nSIR ARTHUR EDDINGTON(1.NATURE, Mar. 21, p. 447) states that, philosophically, the notion of a beginning of the present order of Nature is repugnant to him. I would rather be inclined to think that the present state of quantum theory suggests a beginning of the world very different from the present order of Nature. Thermodynamical principles from the point of view of quantum theory may be stated as follows : (1) Energy of constant total amount is distributed in discrete quanta. (2) The number of distinct quanta is ever increasing. If we go back in the course of time we must find fewer and fewer quanta, until we find all the energy of the universe packed in a few or even in a unique quantum.\n\nNow, in atomic processes, the notions of space and time are no more than statistical notions ; they fade out when applied to individual phenomena involving but a small number of quanta. If the world has begun with a single quantum, the notions of space and time would altogether fail to have any meaning at the beginning; they would only begin to have a sensible meaning when the original quantum had been divided into a sufficient number of quanta. If this suggestion is correct, the beginning of the world happened a little before the beginning of space and time. I think that such a beginning of the world is far enough from the present order of Nature to be not at all repugnant. It may be difficult to follow up the idea in detail as we are not yet able to count the quantum packets in every case. For example, it may be that an atomic nucleus must be counted as a unique quantum, the atomic number acting as a kind of quantum number. If the future development of quantum theory happens to turn in that direction, we could conceive the beginning of the universe in the form of a unique atom, the atomic weight of which is the total mass of the universe. This highly unstable atom would divide in smaller and smaller atoms by a kind of super-radioactive process. Some remnant of this process might, according to Sir James Jeanss idea, foster the heat of the stars until our low atomic number atoms allowed life to be possible. Clearly the initial quantum could not conceal in itself the whole course of evolution ; but, according to the principle of indeterminacy, that is not necessary. Our world is now understood to be a world where something really happens ; the whole story of the world need not have been written down in the first quantum like a song on the disc of a phonograph. The whole matter of the world must have been present at the beginning, but the story it has to tell may be written step by step.",
