Trump met on Monday at the Justice Department with officials, including the special counsel Jack Smith, two weeks after requesting a meeting to discuss their concerns about Mr. Smith’s investigations into Mr. Trump, according to two people familiar with the matter.\n\nThe meeting did not include Attorney General Merrick B. Garland or Lisa O. Monaco, the deputy attorney general, and it is unclear what precise subjects were discussed. But the visit came amid indications that prosecutors in the special counsel’s office were approaching the end of their inquiry into the former president’s handling of classified documents. It also came at a time when Mr. Trump’s advisers have concluded that there might not be much more time to stave off charges, the people said.\n\nThe lawyers — James Trusty, John Rowley and Lindsey Halligan — left the Justice Department after nearly two hours. They declined to speak to reporters.\n\nShortly after their visit, Mr. Trump posted a message on his social media platform, Truth Social, suggesting that his legal team had at least discussed with him the possibility that he could be indicted.\n\n“How can DOJ possibly charge me, who did nothing wrong,” Mr. Trump wrote in all capital letters.\n\nTim Parlatore, a lawyer who resigned last month from representing Mr. Trump, said that the former president’s legal team has harbored worries for some time about how prosecutors working for Mr. Smith have conducted the classified documents inquiry.\n\n“I’ve long had concerns about the manner in which D.O.J. personnel conducted this investigation,” Mr. Parlatore said. “Regardless of what the evidence shows, if your prosecution team has engaged in misconduct, that’s a relevant factor to consider in making any charging decisions, particularly in a case with significant political magnitude.”\n\nPeter Carr, a spokesman for Mr. Smith, declined to comment.\n\nThe meeting at the Justice Department came as prosecutors were still pursuing several avenues of inquiry in the documents case.\n\nProsecutors are expected to question a new witness in front of a federal grand jury sitting in Florida later this week, according to people familiar with the matter. At least one other witness has already appeared before the Florida grand jury, which is separate from the one that has been sitting for months in Washington. It is not clear why a second grand jury is taking testimony in Florida.\n\nProsecutors are also interested in an incident from October in which a worker drained a pool at Mar-a-Lago, causing water damage in a room that contained computer servers that held digital logs for the compound’s security cameras, according to a person familiar with the matter. The interest of prosecutors in the pool incident was reported earlier by CNN.\n\nIn recent weeks, Mr. Smith’s office has drilled down on the question of whether Mr. Trump and some of his aides sought to interfere with the government’s efforts to obtain security camera footage from Mar-a-Lago that could shed light on how documents were stored at the property and who had access to them.\n\nProsecutors have also been studying recorded audio notes made by a lawyer for Mr. Trump, M. Evan Corcoran. The notes pertain to a period last year when Mr. Corcoran was representing Mr. Trump after a subpoena from the Justice Department seeking the return of all classified materials in the former president’s possession.\n\nThe notes also encompassed a search that Mr. Corcoran undertook last June in response to the subpoena for any relevant records being kept at Mar-a-Lago. Mr. Corcoran was forced to turn over the notes after prosecutors convinced a federal judge that they had sufficient evidence of a crime to pierce attorney-client privilege, which typically would shield such material from scrutiny.\n\nIn a one-page letter from Mr. Trump’s lawyers to Mr. Garland, which Mr. Trump posted on his Truth Social account on May 23, the lawyers did not cite any specific complaints by his legal team, but instead broadly asserted that Mr. Trump had been treated unfairly by the Justice Department through the investigations led by Mr. Smith. Along with the classified documents case, prosecutors under Mr. Smith are also scrutinizing efforts by Mr. Trump and his aides to overturn the results of the 2020 election.\n\nThe letter to Mr. Garland was an abbreviated version of a longer one that contained a more detailed account of the concerns by Mr. Trump’s lawyers, according to two people familiar with the matter. Those included the ways in which grand juries have been used in the special counsel’s investigations and attempts to strong-arm defense lawyers involved in the cases, the people said.\n\nMr. Trusty, who worked at the Justice Department for more than two decades, knows Mr. Smith well: The two worked with each other a decade ago, when Mr. Trusty was a high-ranking prosecutor in the department’s criminal division and Mr. Smith was the head of the public integrity unit.\n\nThe Trump legal team’s visit to the Justice Department, first reported by CBS News, came as signs have emerged that Mr. Smith could soon make a decision about whether to seek charges in the documents case. The status of his other line of inquiry, into Mr. Trump’s efforts to reverse his election loss and how they contributed to the assault on the Capitol by his supporters on Jan. 6, 2021, remains less clear.\n\nMr. Trump expects to face charges in the documents investigation, according to people who have spoken to him, although that does not mean that he has been assured that charges are pending.\n\nProsecutors said in legal documents last year that they were investigating Mr. Trump’s handling of classified documents that he took with him when he left office and whether he obstructed the government’s efforts to retrieve them. He voluntarily returned two batches of documents last year, and F.B.I. agents retrieved more in a search in August of Mar-a-Lago, his private club and residence in Florida.\n\nIn his Truth Social post, Mr. Trump compared his case with that of President Biden, who was also found to have had classified documents in his possession from his time as vice president and who is also under scrutiny by a special counsel.       "body": "Crypto giant Binance has been accused of engaging in a \"web of deception\" as it was hit with another lawsuit by US financial regulators.\n\nThe Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) said the trading platform and its founder Changpeng Zhao ignored the rules meant to protect investors to keep operating in the US.\n\nBoth the company and Mr Zhao are accused of mishandling customer funds.\n\nBinance said it would defend the platform \"vigorously\".\n\nADVERTISEMENT\n\nThe complaint from the SEC is the second lawsuit filed against the firm this year and follows promises by the US to police the crypto industry more aggressively.\n\nThe company, which was founded in 2017 and is active in more than 100 countries, denied that customer money had been at risk.\n\n\"While we take the SEC's allegations seriously, they should not be the subject of an SEC enforcement action,\" Binance said, adding it had been in discussions with the regulator.\n\nIt said the legal action was an example of regulators' \"misguided and conscious refusal to provide much-needed clarity and guidance to the digital asset industry\".\n\nBinance, which is registered in the Cayman Islands, is known as the world's largest platform for buying and selling cryptocurrencies and other digital assets.\n\n'Lack of disclosure'\nThe SEC's complaint outlined 13 charges, accusing the company and Mr Zhao of unlawfully soliciting investors and customers, misrepresenting the degree of trading on the platform and misleading the public about its oversight.\n\nBoth the crypto firm and its founder are also alleged to have diverted customer funds to companies controlled by Mr Zhao, a Chinese-Canadian billionaire known in the industry as CZ.\n\nMr Zhao and Binance \"engaged in an extensive web of deception, conflicts of interest, lack of disclosure, and calculated evasion of the law,\" SEC Chair Gary Gensler said in announcing the 136-page lawsuit.\n\n\"The public should beware of investing any of their hard-earned assets with or on these unlawful platforms,\" he added.\n\nThe filing comes as US authorities pledge to use existing laws to root out fraud and other issues in the crypto industry, especially after the dramatic collapse of Binance rival FTX last year.\n\nThe Commodity Futures Trading Commission, another US financial regulator, filed its own lawsuit against Binance in March, accusing it of operating in the country illegally.       "body": "Federal authorities on Monday were investigating what caused a private aircraft to fly into restricted airspace over Washington, D.C., on Sunday, triggering a response by military jets that caused a sonic boom to be heard across much of the region before the small plane crashed in Virginia, killing all four people onboard.\n\nThe private business jet went down near Montebello, Va., the National Transportation Safety Board said. A spokeswoman for the Virginia State Police said in a statement on Monday that emergency responders were able to reach the wreckage on foot about four hours after receiving a report of a plane crash.\n\nJohn Rumpel, who runs Encore Motors of Melbourne, a Florida-based company that owns the aircraft, said in a telephone interview on Monday that his daughter, Adina Azarian, his 2-year-old granddaughter, her nanny and the pilot were on the plane and did not survive.\n\nThe plane, a Cessna 560 Citation V, crashed “almost straight down and at a high speed,” he said, adding that the impact caused a crater, and the wreckage was spread over 150 yards. Mr. Rumpel had said on Sunday that they were returning home to East Hampton, N.Y., after a four-day visit to his home in North Carolina.\n\nFighter jets were sent from Joint Base Andrews in Maryland after the Cessna entered the restricted airspace, prompting the emergency response to intercept the flight, military and U.S. officials confirmed on Sunday.\n\nAfter the Cessna flew into the restricted area, which includes important national landmarks, the Federal Aviation Administration called the pilot but received no response from that plane, and the military ordered the jets to intercept, a military official said.\n\nThe North American Aerospace Defense Command, or NORAD, which oversees aerospace control over the United States and Canada, said in a statement that two F-16 jets were deployed on Sunday to intercept the Cessna.\n\nNORAD said that the fighter jets “were authorized to travel at supersonic speeds,” which would have produced the boom that was heard in the region, including in the suburbs of Virginia and Maryland. The jets also used flares that may have been visible from the ground, the agency said, “in an attempt to draw attention from the pilot.”\n\nOfficials later determined that the Cessna did not pose a threat, and the investigation will look into why the pilot did not respond to the F.A.A. The Cessna was not shot down, the officials said. A White House official said President Biden was briefed on the incident.\n\nThe Cessna crashed near the George Washington National Forest in Virginia, according to NORAD. The F.A.A. said the plane went down around 3:30 p.m.\n\nAdam Gerhardt, an N.T.S.B. investigator, told reporters on Monday that the agency would be on the ground for at least three to four days. He said the wreckage was “highly fragmented,” and he described the area as rural and mountainous.\n\n“It will be a very challenging accident site,” he said.\n\nMr. Gerhardt said the inquiry would look at when exactly the pilot became unresponsive and why the plane flew the route that it did. He said it was not yet known if the plane had a cockpit voice recorder or a flight data recorder, though he said the aircraft was not required to have such equipment.\n\n“Everything is on the table until we slowly and methodically remove different components and elements that will be relevant for this safety investigation,” Mr. Gerhardt said.\n\nMr. Rumpel, who is also a pilot, said on Sunday that he had little information about the circumstances of the crash, but hoped his daughter, granddaughter and the others on board had not suffered.
