titleThe Invisible Bully (Short Fiction)
body

Jake knew that there was no point in trying to fight it.

He knew that there was no point in trying to ignore that overwhelming sense of wrong he felt in his head, no point in simply walking away and going about his day, no point in doing anything except focusing harder on his efforts to right it, to fix it, to feel the temporary sense of relief that told him his mind was, at least for now, balanced again.

His initial four attempts at making his way through yet another one of these ritualistic routines had been beaten back by that domineering, disembodied voice, as they so often were, his resolve broken a little more each time, as it so often was: his concentration appeared to be working with him even less than usual, this morning. Some days were worse than others, and today already had him approaching a new level of mental exhaustion before he had even left the house.

The thought reminded Jake that he needed to get to school, and he quickly turned his full attention back to the dresser drawer. Steadying himself with a deep breath, he began pulling it outwards by its small, round metal handles, going slowly to keep his focus, silently telling himself that this one, menial mental task was the only thing in the world that mattered. All he had to do was get through this five times - always five times - without letting the images and interruptions flood his head again, and things would be fine.

Open, shut, he told himself, closing his eyes. Open, shut. Five times. Just five easy pulls, five easy pushes, that’s all I need to do.

Just a few simple seconds to keep his mind completely cleared, and this would be the last time he would have to do it.

Open. Shut. Open -

Unbidden and immediate, a mental image of a math test with a large, angry D- scrawled in the top corner appeared in Jake’s thoughts, and he took his fingers off the drawer handles as yet another wave of frustration overcame him: he had not concentrated hard enough. If he gave up now...

He opened his eyes, trying to stem the sudden flow of visuals in his head: failing math, failing ninth grade, being left behind in school, never getting into a good college or University, never getting a job or a car or a house and so on and so on until he pictured himself homeless and dead.

All events certain to happen, certain to come true until he was successful at completing the ritual.

That had just become more difficult: he would have to attempt it at least three more times, now. The sense of mental wrong that drove him to do these things did not seem to be satisfied with specific numbers, and six and seven were two of them. Finishing it on either was just as null and void as not taking any action to begin with.

On the eighth try, Jake felt the mental click that told him the itch had been scratched, that he could go about his day. Relieved, he grabbed his bag and headed out the door to walk to school, giving an unconscious sigh at the thought - despite his supposed mental defences against failing today’s test, he thought there was a very good chance it would happen anyway. He had never been good at math.

Concentrating on avoiding the sidewalk cracks, Jake walked in the cold, crisp autumn air and thought about the unexplainable epidemic that continued to take over his thoughts, day after day, with all of these threats. He did not know exactly when it had started, but such was its strength and forcefulness that he did not think it would ever stop now that it seemed to have settled in his head.

The subjects of the threats always varied, but they all had the common thread of falling under the category of his worst fears: failing classes, losing a loved one, dying. They appeared in his head like a sudden rainstorm whenever he attempted to make his mind focus on anything, no matter how minute, and all with the distinct impression that they would, without a doubt, come true unless Jake took part in whatever bizarre rituals they demanded.

He consoled himself with the fact that he at least able to hide the behaviour in public, for the most part, although he did get a few strange looks when he was unable to resist opening and closing the same door or taking the same item in and out of his locker two or three times. He didn’t blame anyone for staring, though. It must look odd.

But he had to do it. He had to do it. He had to open and close that door four times, or he’d get hit by a car and die in the hospital. He had to take that item off of the shelf and put it back three times, or his dog would get sick and have to be put down. He had to count to fifteen before going to sleep every night, with the numbers paced just the right amount of seconds apart, or he’d never get his dream job, or any job, when he finished school.

On and on it went, for most of every day and every night. It seemed to be too much for a ninth-grader to take, and while he had often considered telling somebody about it, he was not sure how it would sound or what they would think. What if they shipped him off to a mental hospital?

Jake blinked. He had arrived on school grounds without realizing it, and his stomach gave an involuntary clench as thoughts of another full day of classes and concerns, of attempts to keep the mental itch satisfied with his actions while his teachers taught, began to race through his mind. He briefly considered going home sick before sighing again and walking towards the large double doors.

He barely paid attention in science, though he did note Ms. Vinson's announcement that there would be a test the following Wednesday. Another test in another subject in which he fell far, far short of excelling, another thing that would surely trigger that strange sense of wrong in his head and threaten him with failure unless he did whatever nonsensical ritualistic actions it wanted. That was when he stopped fully listening, starting to envision the mental intrusions, the waking nightmares about having to repeat science, the ninth grade...

Math was as he had predicted: the test was difficult, and as he had thought regardless of his compliance this morning, he was not very confident he had passed. He didn’t even fill out all of his answers, an action that earned him a frown from Ms. Kortz as he turned in his paper at the end of the class, avoiding all eye contact as he headed for the door.

French and gym were no better, and by the end of the day he was exhausted to his mental limits from both school and the fact that the sense wrong in his head refused to be righted for more than a half an hour at a time.

Thankfully, he had no homework that night, and shortly after dinner he retired to his room, trying to ignore the intrusive thoughts long enough to read before his eyes gave way and sleep overcame him, finally leaving him safe - for a time - from the exhausting efforts of keeping his mind clear.

*

The next day was much, much worse. It had started out as such a simple demand, as far as they went - but then again, most of them did. This time, though, it seemed that no matter how hard he concentrated on taking his pen out of his bag and placing it on his desk the ‘right way’, making sure he did it ‘perfectly’, his mind refused to feel that sense of balance that told him he had satisfied the need for yet another bizarre, ritualistic gesture.

I am giving you perfection, Jake thought, beyond frustrated, practically sweating in his seat. Just leave me alone! Leave me alone!

But the unscratched itch, the notch out of place, remained. The wrong that he felt simply would not be righted, and his panic and stress continued to increase with every repeated attempt.

“Jake!”He opened his eyes, pen halfway between bag and desk, to see Ms. Kortz frowning at him from the front of the room. The whole class turned to stare, some smirking, some stifling giggles.“Are you here,” she demanded, “to make a fool of yourself? Of my class?”

“N - no,” Jake stammered.

“Put the pen down, Jake, and come here,” said said softly, her eyes glittering with a malice that suggested it was not a suggestion.

Slowly, heart pounding, Jake made his way to her desk, but before he was halfway there she pointed towards the board, where an equation he could not begin to understand adorned its otherwise clean surface.

“Solve it using the method I just explained,” she said in the same soft, deadly voice.

Jake stared, dumbfounded, not knowing where to begin, looking back at the class for he did not know what reason.

“Don’t look at them for help,” Ms. Kortz snapped. “Figure it out, if you think you can act like you’re bored to a trance while I teach!”

He turned helplessly back to the board. He shook his head, humiliation washing over him like a wave of polluted water.

“I can’t,” he said quietly.

“What was that?” Ms. Kortz barked.

“I can’t,” he said, louder.

She smirked. “You’ll see me after class, Jake.”

And when class was dismissed and he was asked to explain himself, Jake could not bring himself to admit why he had been doing what he had been doing: he was simply too worried that Ms. Kortz would think he was crazy and recommend he get some sort of medical evaluation. Whatever the reason this…condition had made its way into his mind, he definitely did not think it was a normal thing, and did not want to draw attention to it at school.

Ms. Kortz had therefore reprimanded him for being “lazy and disrespectful” and had written a note to his parents, which he had not yet given them. He was not sure how they would react to it, and even less sure what they would say if he told them the truth about what was going on in his head - no doubt they would be much more sympathetic than Ms. Kortz would have been, but how seriously could they take him? How did he explain what he was experiencing? That he was forced to tuck his desk chair in and out eight times - always eight times - every night before he went to bed, and that not doing it left a growing sense of wrong, a sense that his worst fears would come true?

He buried his head in his hands. Either way, he would need to show his parents the note tonight: Ms. Kortz had told him to get a signature from both of them, and that tomorrow she would personally call his house and carefully explain to his parents what a poor example of a student Jake was if he did not.

He walked downstairs and into the living room, where his father was reading the news and his mother was watching television. He put the note down on the coffee table and said, “Mom, Dad, uh, my teacher gave me this from school, that you need to sign, and, um…”

He trailed off. Both of his parents looked at him questioningly, and his mother reached for the note, her frown deepening as she read.

“Jake,” she said. “What is this? What does this mean, ‘disrespectful’?”

“Disrespectful?” his father said, getting up to read the note and looking carefully at Jake when he was finished.

Jake had never felt so miserable in his life. Keeping this inside and trying to live with it - how long could that go on? Would it ever go away? There was nothing else for it. Through his tears, he went on to explain everything.

*

As it turned out, his parents did not think that he was crazy, and Jake kicked himself for being afraid to tell them what had been going on his head. They understood why he had not, however.

After convincing Jake that they would not let anyone send him to any kind of mental hospital, they made an appointment for him with his family doctor, who listened to Jake and gently explained to him that what he was exhibiting were signs of Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, which often manifests around early adolescence. She referred Jake to a specialist, with whom he met the following week.

In their first meeting, the specialist told Jake that while it was likely OCD would be with him for his entire life, he could learn how to fight and manage the symptoms, and even stave them off for a while. He told Jake that lots of people, especially lots of kids his own age, begin to experience strange and scary things happening with their brains, and that this was a very normal type of thing for people to go through. He also assured Jake that was not a freak, and that he was certainly not alone.

“That sense of wrong you feel,” he said. “Just think of it as a bully, Jake. Just a bully in your mind. And the best way to deal with a bully is to fight back as much as you can. There are lots of ways to do that, Jake, and we’re going to find the best one for you. Lots of people have different bullies inside of their heads, but they don’t have to face them on their own, okay? I know it’s hard, and it’s stressful, and it’s scary. But it doesn’t always have to be.”

“So here’s what I want you to try, Jake. The next time that bully tries to push you around, I want you to talk back - to fight back. Just try telling it: ‘no. No, I won’t listen to you. You make me do things that make no sense, and today I’m going to ignore you.’ I know that’s hard, Jake, but I promise you - try it, and you’ll see. You can fight back. It does not own you. It just wants to scare you. It won’t always be easy, but you can fight back. And when you feel like you can't? The people around you are here to help.”

And the next day before school, after concentrating very hard, Jake did his best to disregard the usual demands that he open and shut his dresser drawer five times before leaving, to ignore what he now knew was a false sense of wrong in his brain.

Five times, Jake. Five times, or you’ll fail that science test.

No, Jake thought. No, I won’t listen to this. I already failed that math test, and I did what you said. You're just a lying bully. So no. I won’t. Just shut up, and go away.

And, shutting his dresser drawer without bothering to look back, Jake picked up his bag and left for school.

AUTHOR'S NOTE:

This is a work of fiction, but it is based on very real events that I experienced in my youth and continue to experience at the age of 30. "body": "
\n
Jake knew that there was no point in trying to fight it.
\n
He knew that there was no point in trying to ignore that overwhelming sense of wrong he felt in his head, no point in simply walking away and going about his day, no point in doing anything except focusing harder on his efforts to right it, to fix it, to feel the temporary sense of relief that told him his mind was, at least for now, balanced again.
\n
His initial four attempts at making his way through yet another one of these ritualistic routines had been beaten back by that domineering, disembodied voice, as they so often were, his resolve broken a little more each time, as it so often was: his concentration appeared to be working with him even less than usual, this morning. Some days were worse than others, and today already had him approaching a new level of mental exhaustion before he had even left the house.
\n
The thought reminded Jake that he needed to get to school, and he quickly turned his full attention back to the dresser drawer. Steadying himself with a deep breath, he began pulling it outwards by its small, round metal handles, going slowly to keep his focus, silently telling himself that this one, menial mental task was the only thing in the world that mattered. All he had to do was get through this five times - always five times - without letting the images and interruptions flood his head again, and things would be fine.
\n
Open, shut, he told himself, closing his eyes. Open, shut. Five times. Just five easy pulls, five easy pushes, that’s all I need to do.
\n
Just a few simple seconds to keep his mind completely cleared, and this would be the last time he would have to do it.
\n
Open. Shut. Open -
\n
Unbidden and immediate, a mental image of a math test with a large, angry D- scrawled in the top corner appeared in Jake’s thoughts, and he took his fingers off the drawer handles as yet another wave of frustration overcame him: he had not concentrated hard enough. If he gave up now...
\n
He opened his eyes, trying to stem the sudden flow of visuals in his head: failing math, failing ninth grade, being left behind in school, never getting into a good college or University, never getting a job or a car or a house and so on and so on until he pictured himself homeless and dead.
\n
All events certain to happen, certain to come true until he was successful at completing the ritual.
\n
That had just become more difficult: he would have to attempt it at least three more times, now. The sense of mental wrong that drove him to do these things did not seem to be satisfied with specific numbers, and six and seven were two of them. Finishing it on either was just as null and void as not taking any action to begin with.
\n
On the eighth try, Jake felt the mental click that told him the itch had been scratched, that he could go about his day. Relieved, he grabbed his bag and headed out the door to walk to school, giving an unconscious sigh at the thought - despite his supposed mental defences against failing today’s test, he thought there was a very good chance it would happen anyway. He had never been good at math.
\n
Concentrating on avoiding the sidewalk cracks, Jake walked in the cold, crisp autumn air and thought about the unexplainable epidemic that continued to take over his thoughts, day after day, with all of these threats. He did not know exactly when it had started, but such was its strength and forcefulness that he did not think it would ever stop now that it seemed to have settled in his head.
\n
The subjects of the threats always varied, but they all had the common thread of falling under the category of his worst fears: failing classes, losing a loved one, dying. They appeared in his head like a sudden rainstorm whenever he attempted to make his mind focus on anything, no matter how minute, and all with the distinct impression that they would, without a doubt, come true unless Jake took part in whatever bizarre rituals they demanded.
\n
He consoled himself with the fact that he at least able to hide the behaviour in public, for the most part, although he did get a few strange looks when he was unable to resist opening and closing the same door or taking the same item in and out of his locker two or three times. He didn’t blame anyone for staring, though. It must look odd.
\n
But he had to do it. He had to do it. He had to open and close that door four times, or he’d get hit by a car and die in the hospital. He had to take that item off of the shelf and put it back three times, or his dog would get sick and have to be put down. He had to count to fifteen before going to sleep every night, with the numbers paced just the right amount of seconds apart, or he’d never get his dream job, or any job, when he finished school.
\n
On and on it went, for most of every day and every night. It seemed to be too much for a ninth-grader to take, and while he had often considered telling somebody about it, he was not sure how it would sound or what they would think. What if they shipped him off to a mental hospital?
\n
Jake blinked. He had arrived on school grounds without realizing it, and his stomach gave an involuntary clench as thoughts of another full day of classes and concerns, of attempts to keep the mental itch satisfied with his actions while his teachers taught, began to race through his mind. He briefly considered going home sick before sighing again and walking towards the large double doors.
\n
He barely paid attention in science, though he did note Ms. Vinson's announcement that there would be a test the following Wednesday. Another test in another subject in which he fell far, far short of excelling, another thing that would surely trigger that strange sense of wrong in his head and threaten him with failure unless he did whatever nonsensical ritualistic actions it wanted. That was when he stopped fully listening, starting to envision the mental intrusions, the waking nightmares about having to repeat science, the ninth grade...
\n
Math was as he had predicted: the test was difficult, and as he had thought regardless of his compliance this morning, he was not very confident he had passed. He didn’t even fill out all of his answers, an action that earned him a frown from Ms. Kortz as he turned in his paper at the end of the class, avoiding all eye contact as he headed for the door.
\n
French and gym were no better, and by the end of the day he was exhausted to his mental limits from both school and the fact that the sense wrong in his head refused to be righted for more than a half an hour at a time.
\n
Thankfully, he had no homework that night, and shortly after dinner he retired to his room, trying to ignore the intrusive thoughts long enough to read before his eyes gave way and sleep overcame him, finally leaving him safe - for a time - from the exhausting efforts of keeping his mind clear.
\n
*
\n
The next day was much, much worse. It had started out as such a simple demand, as far as they went - but then again, most of them did. This time, though, it seemed that no matter how hard he concentrated on taking his pen out of his bag and placing it on his desk the ‘right way’, making sure he did it ‘perfectly’, his mind refused to feel that sense of balance that told him he had satisfied the need for yet another bizarre, ritualistic gesture.
\n
I am giving you perfection, Jake thought, beyond frustrated, practically sweating in his seat. Just leave me alone! Leave me alone!
\n
But the unscratched itch, the notch out of place, remained. The wrong that he felt simply would not be righted, and his panic and stress continued to increase with every repeated attempt.
\n
“Jake!”He opened his eyes, pen halfway between bag and desk, to see Ms. Kortz frowning at him from the front of the room. The whole class turned to stare, some smirking, some stifling giggles.“Are you here,” she demanded, “to make a fool of yourself? Of my class?”
\n
“N - no,” Jake stammered.
\n
“Put the pen down, Jake, and come here,” said said softly, her eyes glittering with a malice that suggested it was not a suggestion.
\n
Slowly, heart pounding, Jake made his way to her desk, but before he was halfway there she pointed towards the board, where an equation he could not begin to understand adorned its otherwise clean surface.
\n
“Solve it using the method I just explained,” she said in the same soft, deadly voice.
\n
Jake stared, dumbfounded, not knowing where to begin, looking back at the class for he did not know what reason.
\n
“Don’t look at them for help,” Ms. Kortz snapped. “Figure it out, if you think you can act like you’re bored to a trance while I teach!”
\n
He turned helplessly back to the board. He shook his head, humiliation washing over him like a wave of polluted water.
\n
“I can’t,” he said quietly.
\n
“What was that?” Ms. Kortz barked.
\n
“I can’t,” he said, louder.
\n
She smirked. “You’ll see me after class, Jake.”
\n
And when class was dismissed and he was asked to explain himself, Jake could not bring himself to admit why he had been doing what he had been doing: he was simply too worried that Ms. Kortz would think he was crazy and recommend he get some sort of medical evaluation. Whatever the reason this…condition had made its way into his mind, he definitely did not think it was a normal thing, and did not want to draw attention to it at school.
\n
\n
He buried his head in his hands. Either way, he would need to show his parents the note tonight: Ms. Kortz had told him to get a signature from both of them, and that tomorrow she would personally call his house and carefully explain to his parents what a poor example of a student Jake was if he did not.
\n
He walked downstairs and into the living room, where his father was reading the news and his mother was watching television. titleThe Big Book of Time
body

Not many know this, but when the time comes for a planet to part ways with its own existence and the existence of everything on its hitherto solid surface, living and dead, it does not, contrary to popular belief, simply disappear into the vacuum-filled void of outer space.

There is actually an extensive process involved in putting that planet in a place of permanent legacy.

But not many know this.

So here’s how it works:

When a planet goes kaput, if you like, one of its surviving-up-until-kaput citizens is selected, completely at random, to act as a representative of sorts for that planet’s history and culture and general day-to-day life in its little corner of the Universe.

(Note: should the planet go kaput at a time when no living beings remain on its hitherto solid surface, then a former citizen will be roused from the drowsy sleep of death to fulfill the duties that follow as a representative in the same manner they would have had they been alive at the time of said kaput.)

Still got it? Good.

So: that representative’s soul, if you like, is then transferred to a small, grey facility that smells sort of like a hospital, where they meet with a scribe who will promptly request they tell the tale of their planet, flaws and all, or as much as they know of it, from start to finish.

The scribe will then record every single word of the planet’s story, as told by this citizen, and add it to a staggeringly large tome entitled The Big Book of Time, where it will remain for all of eternity’s reading pleasure.Still got it? Good. Now: in the case of the recently deceased planet Earth, the chosen representative was Jeff.

Upon his arrival in the small, grey facility that smelled sort of like a hospital, Jeff sat down on a single grey plastic chair and waited patiently and politely for someone to explain to him what came next. Having just witnessed the final destruction of the planet on which he had spent his entire life, you see, he now believed, for the moment, that he was in heaven, and that any second now a friendly angel would make his or her way over and explain just where to go to get settled into the Afterlife.

He was quite looking forward to it.

And so it was that when the scribe came to meet Jeff, there was a small mix-up that took some moments to set right, through which we will now fast-forward so as not to waste that precious resource known as time.

The scribe, whose name was Charles, now explained to Jeff just what his duties as the randomly chosen representative of the planet Earth would entail.

“Just the quick history of your planet, then,” he said, scribbling on official release forms he was going to have Jeff fill out. The forms made Jeff promise that he would not sue in the event that his home planet is misrepresented in The Big Book of Time.

“Um,” said Jeff. “All of it?”

“Quite so.” Charles nodded, pushing the forms towards Jeff. “Sign here, here, here, here, here and here, please.”

He then pulled a pad of blank paper out of his desk drawer and set it next to a page of notes he had written previously. The notes contained everything he knew about Jeff’s home planet, which was this:

Planet: Earth. Dominant Species: Human.

“Um,” said Jeff.

“Come now, then,” said Charles, “you must know the basic facts, at least. How old was your planet” - he looked down at his notes - “‘Earth’?”

Jeff shrugged. “Depends who you ask, really.”

“Well, I’m asking you, Jeff,” said Charles sternly.

The scribes were very stern, you see.

“Well,” said Jeff slowly, rubbing his chin, “I don’t know, really.”

“Really, Jeff,” said Charles, frowning, "you must have a guess?”

Jeff shrugged again. “Pretty old. Couple billion years, at least,” he said.

To a scribe, this was not very old at all. Nonetheless, Charles scribbled.

“I see. Now, as my research tells me you humans were the dominant species for most of the planet’s existence - short as it was - can you tell me some of the ways in which you made the planet a livable place? Some ways in which you contributed to its history in a positive manner?”

“Hmm,” said Jeff.“Come now,” said Charles again, frowning in the same stern manner.

“Well,” said Jeff, rubbing his chin again, “there’s Cheetos. Those was pretty good, I think. Never ‘ad ‘em much back home, but a fancy snack when I could find ‘em.”

“Cheetos?” said Charles, raising a pompous eyebrow.

“Yeah, yeah. Like sticks made-a cheese. Nice and crunchy. Bit of a mess, though. Stain the fingers, the clothes.” Charles stared, then scribbled, albeit with slow reluctance. “Anything more...noteworthy, perhaps?”

“Hmm,” said Jeff again. “The telly was a good one. Computers, too.”

“Go on.”

“Well, telly was just a box, see, played images and sounds and the like. Computer was a box too. Let you look things up, find answers to questions. Dead useful little blokes.”

Charles was intrigued.

Scribes, you see, tend to live very, very long lives, and so he had already spoken to thousands upon thousands of representatives from thousands and thousands of planets that had long since gone kaput.

And although they all had different names for them, many of these residents had spoken of devices similar to the ones Jeff had just mentioned. In just about every case, they had been used for several different educational and intellectual purposes, and so Charles was very excited by the knowledge Jeff was about to share, which he imagined would be a rich and varied history of the planet Earth that was based largely on the use of these devices.

“Yeah,” said Jeff, looking wistful now. “Telly had all sorts of fun…”

He then went on to explain the finer points of the television, getting lost in a complicated explanation of the 24 hour news network. Somewhere in a detailed overview of political pundits and their role in the whole thing, Charles felt the need to interrupt.

“Tell me, Jeff,” he said, trying to retain his patience, “was there any other use for the news? Perhaps something in a manner that enhanced the mind?”

Jeff frowned. “Other important things, I ‘spose.”

“Ah, yes, here we are. And what were the important things?”

“Hmm,” said Jeff yet again. “Good to keep abreast of what the famous folk were doing.”

“The famous folk?” asked Charles, perking up slightly, or at least as much as a scribe was allowed, which was not very much. Think of a cat that hears a noise, but is too lazy to investigate. “The top minds of your planet, I assume?”

Jeff was rubbing his chin again.“‘Spose so,” he said. “Was mostly the actors and actresses and athletes, really. Or just the people with lotsa money. We always liked to know what they was up to.”

“And was this due to their intellectualism? Their influence as thought leaders?”

Jeff gave a slight laugh. “Some, maybe, yeah,” he said. “But mostly we just thought they was pretty. Fun to look at, like. Didn’t always listen to what they had to say so long as they was glitzed up nice.”

Charles was getting slightly frustrated: it seemed to be taking longer than usual to progress to the point where something significant, something worthy of The Big Book of Time, could be said about this planet. He tried again.

“This computer, then. What kinds of things did people use them to look up? Information, surely?”

Jeff shrugged. “Sometimes, yeah,” he said. “But mostly was the same things as the telly. Watch the same type-a programs. See what the famous folk were up to. See ‘em without they clothes on sometimes, too,” he said, grinning. “Lotsa folk looked that kinda thing up.”

Charles closed his eyes. This was giving him a bit of a headache, and the small grey facility that smelled sort of like a hospital in which he made his living as a scribe did not have any Advil.

“Right,” he muttered, rubbing his temples and thinking of his favourite tea. “Your leaders. What were they like?”

“Right fussy,” said Jeff with a crisp nod. “Always fightin’, back and forth.”

“Fighting...who? Those who threatened you? Extra-terrestrial interlopers?”

“Nah, we never got around to all that. Themselves, mostly. Not one couldn’t go but disagree with the other, a day went past.” He gave another crisp nod.

“I beg your pardon?” asked Charles, as politely as he could manage.

“Always squabblin,’” said Jeff slowly. “Always bitin’ at one another, like. Not so much leadin’ as arguin’ over who’d be the best leader, yeah?”

Charles scribbled.

“And yeah, we had ourselves some enemies we needed protectin’ from, but it was always other people, not those extra-t’restills. Just different folks with different ideas.” He shrugged.

“I see,” said Charles, still scribbling. “Well. In the midst of all this … squabbling, were there any major accomplishments of which you can speak?”

Jeff frowned. “I told you about Cheetos and the telly, but - “

“No, no,” said Charles, again trying to rein in his impatience. “Something … something to which your entire species bore witness?”

“Well,” said Jeff, “we did send a few blokes to the moon, once or twice.”

Charles brightened. “Well, that’s something, then! What did you do there?”

Jeff shrugged. “Took a few pieces of soil. The Yanks left a flag, memory serves.”

Charles felt disappointment again.

“You didn’t take the opportunity to explore it further? To study it further?”

“Well, the folks in charge weren’t all that keen on space, really. Didn’t think it all that much worth explorin’ all the time.”

“Was there nothing else your sciences discovered, or created, on the same planet-wide scale?”

“I ‘spose the nuke was a pretty big one,” said Jeff with another shrug.

“The nuke?” asked Charles, pen at the ready. “Yeah. Giant bomb. Vaporizes the body if you’re close enough, or else makes you real sick for a long, long time. Blows buildings, cars, the whole lot to bits. Lotta bad effects from that one. We didn’t use it all that much.”

Charles was shocked, and, professional though he was, it took him a moment to scribble the details of this development on his notepad.

“I … see. And your leaders … authorized this? For use on your fellow … on other members of your species?”

“Many of ‘em kept the nukes around, yeah,” said Jeff, shrugging. “Liked to have ‘em as a just-in-case, I ‘spose.”

“How … many?” asked Charles.

“Few hundred, few thousand.”

Charles was once again forced to pause before scribbling on his notepad. He decided it was time for his final question, which was always the same.

“Now, tell me, Jeff,” he said. “What was it that did the planet Earth in, in the end?”

Jeff looked slightly embarrassed.

“Well,” he said, “it was us, really.”

“I see,” said Charles, scribbling once again.

“Yeah,” said Jeff, “think we crowded ‘er, like. She used to be right pretty, I ‘eard. Think we changed that a bit, you know. Lotsa pollution, and the like.”

“Pollution?” asked Charles, despite himself.

Jeff nodded. “Our waste, yeah. Things we ain’t really had a use for, anymore. And all the boxes and such they came in. Little things, too. Cig’rits. Paper bags. People threw things all over the place, couldn’t ‘ave a walk in the park without stepping in someone’s bag of old crisps. Made the place a bit hard to live in after a while.”

Charles shook his head as he wrote, pondering with awe how he had gotten the luck of the draw to speak with the representative from this wonder of a planet.

“Right,” he said, looking up and clapping his hands, “that about does it then, Jeff.”

“Oh, alright then,” said Jeff with a nod. “Where am I off to now?”

“On,” said Charles simply, and Jeff disappeared into the Afterlife.

Charles looked down at his single page of notes on the planet Earth, at his latest addition to The Big Book of Time, at everything Jeff had said about Cheetos and the telly and the nuke.

He looked for a long time.

After a while, with a heavy sigh, Charles resigned himself to doing the thing he knew he had to do for the very first time in his long, long career. Scribes were allowed, on extremely rare occasions, to do what he was about to do, but none that he knew had - or at least, none had spoken of any times that it had been a necessity.

Nonetheless.

Charles opened the drawer on the right side of his desk and removed a single small key.

He then used this key to unlock the drawer on the left side of his desk, which contained a single matchbook.

He took his single page of notes on the planet Earth, everything Jeff had said about Cheetos and the telly and the nuke, and held it carefully over the matchbook for a smidgen of a moment before bringing the flames to life and letting the fire consume a story that he, too, soon hoped to forget.

Giant bomb. Vaporizes the body if you’re close enough, or else makes you real sick for a long, long time. Blows buildings, cars, the whole lot to bits. Lotta bad effects from that one. We didn’t use it all that much.”
\n
Charles was shocked, and, professional though he was, it took him a moment to scribble the details of this development on his notepad.
\n
“I … see. And your leaders … authorized this? For use on your fellow … on other members of your species?”
\n
“Many of ‘em kept the nukes around, yeah,” said Jeff, shrugging. “Liked to have ‘em as a just-in-case, I ‘spose.”
\n
“How … many?” asked Charles.
\n
“Few hundred, few thousand.”
\n
Charles was once again forced to pause before scribbling on his notepad. He decided it was time for his final question, which was always the same.
\n
“Now, tell me, Jeff,” he said. “What was it that did the planet Earth in, in the end?”
\n
Jeff looked slightly embarrassed.
\n
“Well,” he said, “it was us, really.”
\n
“I see,” said Charles, scribbling once again.
\n
“Yeah,” said Jeff, “think we crowded ‘er, like. She used to be right pretty, I ‘eard. Think we changed that a bit, you know. Lotsa pollution, and the like.”
\n
“Pollution?” asked Charles, despite himself.
\n
Jeff nodded. “Our waste, yeah. Things we ain’t really had a use for, anymore. And all the boxes and such they came in. Little things, too. Cig’rits. Paper bags. People threw things all over the place, couldn’t ‘ave a walk in the park without stepping in someone’s bag of old crisps. Made the place a bit hard to live in after a while.”
\n
Charles shook his head as he wrote, pondering with awe how he had gotten the luck of the draw to speak with the representative from this wonder of a planet.
\n
“Right,” he said, looking up and clapping his hands, “that about does it then, Jeff.”
\n
“Oh, alright then,” said Jeff with a nod. “Where am I off to now?”
\n
“On,” said Charles simply, and Jeff disappeared into the Afterlife.
\n
Charles looked down at his single page of notes on the planet Earth, at his latest addition to The Big Book of Time, at everything Jeff had said about Cheetos and the telly and the nuke.
\n
He looked for a long time.
\n
After a while, with a heavy sigh, Charles resigned himself to doing the thing he knew he had to do for the very first time in his long, long career. Scribes were allowed, on extremely rare occasions, to do what he was about to do, but none that he knew had - or at least, none had spoken of any times that it had been a necessity.
\n
Nonetheless.
\n
Charles opened the drawer on the right side of his desk and removed a single small key.
\n
He then used this key to unlock the drawer on the left side of his desk, which contained a single matchbook.
\n
He took his single page of notes on the planet Earth, everything Jeff had said about Cheetos and the telly and the nuke, and held it carefully over the matchbook for a smidgen of a moment before bringing the flames to life and letting the fire consume a story that he, too, soon hoped to forget.
\n
",
