titleThis is not the time to HODL
bodySome of you know that I've been vocal about crypto currencies and their power to shift the economic balance. I still believe that but I'm taking a break from crypto and I think folks who care about their savings should too. Here's why: Some time ago some smart but rather self-serving folk created a new crypto currency called USDT. The T stands for Tether. They needed it in order to make transfering fiat around the world simpler. It's easy to move bitcoin, ethereum and friends from one wallet to another. It can be done cheaply and in moments but anytime you want to move fiat, you have to go back to the traditional mechanisms like banking and transfer services that are slow and expensive. If you're trying to make money off of arbitrage trading, you need to move your fiat faster than that. USDT solved that problem on the premise that for every tether dollar printed, a company also called Tether, would put a real US dollar into a bank account for safekeeping. They promised that if you needed to change a USDT for a real US dollar, they'd go and get you one from their safe bank account. Tether also made it easy to run a crypto currency exchange without having a bank account. Or even without having a registered tax paying company or legal entity behind it. Yes, really. Some exchanges are profitting to the tune of many millions of dollars and are run entirely anonymously. That's fine until the revenue wants a cut or until there's some problem that means the traders want their money back. That's what's happening now. Both of those things actually. The problem is that those self-serving wankers who created tether realised that nobody really cares enough to check wether they were actually putting a real dollar in the bank whenever they printed a funny one. If nobody's checking, why not dispense with the pulava of sticking to their word? It's really hard to leave all that cash sitting in a bank account when you could be buying Lamborghinis. Also, while we're not sticking it in the safe bank account, what's to stop us printing a little extra funny money? Everyone likes the funny money anyway and they give us real bitcoins for it. We can use the real bitcoins to buy real money on honest exchanges like Coinbase and Bitstamp. Then we can put the real money back into safekeeping - or maybe just buy more Lambos. It get's better. Since there's now a machine that prints funny money that nobody cares to look into and since the funny money can be used to buy real bitcoin, lets use funny money to prop up the price of bitcoin. Yes, that's right. The price of bitcoin and ethereum and all the other cryptos crashed a long time ago. It's only the constant printing of USDT and the pumping of that USDT into the crypto markets that's keeping the price of bitcoin from crashing all the way back down to something realistic. Well, there you go. That's why I'm taking a break. There's a real crash coming that's going to make all the previous ones look like a bit of fun. I'm not even going to bother citing references for everything I've said above. It's all easily available information so if you don't believe me, do yourself a favour and Google it. The research will put you in good stead for what's coming. And yes, when the tether scam blows, I'll go back to believing in the tech that makes crypto great and I'll probably go back to trading and hodling and buying whatever's left standing after the fallout.

titleLearning to bear trade in the middle of a bitcoin crash
bodyMy initial attempts at crypto trading were rather clumsy. I made all the beginner mistakes. Well I hope I did. I hope there aren't more nasties around the corner. I've been at it for a couple months. I started with a small investment. Actually only half of it was mine. A friend, who doesn't own a computer asked if I'd invest on his behalf. There's a lot of pitfalls in working with money that isn't yours. Especially when it belongs to someone you don't want to let down. In retrospect, I don't really want to invest on behalf of others. It adds too much stress. But anyway, let's talk about what happened. At the beginning of November using 1000 Bulgarian Lev, I bought 0.089 Bitcoin. For about a week, I opened my Electrum desktop wallet and made sure it was still there every day and searched the internet for a good exchange where I could learn to trade it. I settled on Poloniex because I couldn't find any unusually negative reviews for that exchange and I didn't know any better. I actually like Poloniex a fair bit. It's easy to use, has a simple interface and all the information you need to make trades is readily available. I've since done a fair bit of reading on tether (USDT) and decided that I don't want to use any exchange that uses tether because it's a dangerous, fraudulent house of cards. But I didn't know that 6 weeks ago. Poloniex (and other exchanges) use USDT because it means they don't need a bank account in order to operate. Traders can base their trades off USDT because it provides a convenient measure of profit or loss which is comparable to USD. I love the concept of tether, I just don't trust the people behind USDT. Tethers need a very transparent auditable proof that exactly one US Dollar is held in trust for every USDT issued otherwise we have to assume that the tether is complete smoke and mirrors and not backed up by anything. This is the case with USDT (the evidence of USD held in trust is missing). So while I like Poloniex as an exchange and I understand why they want and need to use tether, it's simply negligent to hold customer money in a currency that could literally disapear in a ball of smoke when a regulator sneezes. When I learned enough about USDT to know I didn't want to be anywhere near it, I transferred the bitcoin to GDAX and discovered that bitcoin transfer fees are actually pretty nasty. So much for a brave new world of free financial movement. If bitcoin doesn't fix this soon, it will relegate itself to the value store domain and leave altcoins to change the world. Anyway, back to the subject of learning to trade... I'm going to describe a learning journey that is full of mistakes. Treat this as a guide for what not to do and you might learn something. Trading at "market rate" means you just say how much of what you are holding (eg: bitcoin), you would like to sell and what currency you want to buy. You don't know how much of the currency being bought will end up belonging to you until the order closes (trade completes). This is usually a poor way to trade, but when you're a noob like me, it's the first method you get your head around. So I watched the graph for the currency pair I was interested in (BTC-EUR). There are all these spikes and dips. Reasoning suggests that one should be able to sell bitcoin on every spike and buy it back on every dip and over time, the amount of bitcoin being held, should increase. In theory this is fine. In practice there are two gotchas. The first, rather obviously, is that you have to know when you are nearing the top of a spike or the bottom of a dip without the beautiful benefit of hindsight that a ticker chart displays for previous spikes and dips. It can't tell you anything about what the current spike or dip is doing and how long it might do it for. It just tells you about things that have already happened. Traders use a bunch of algorithmic overlays and voodoo magic to try and predict where the line will reverse its trajectory but there are no guarantees and there are no crystal balls. I reckon the best trades are accomplished because the trader has an intuition. A good feel for the market that lets the marvelous human brain perform the magic of prediction. AI is also pretty good at predictions like these and I have seen some AI bots be right more often than they are wrong but they still struggle getting predictions correct when they encounter a scenario they've never seen before. Like a bigger than normal crash or boom. Those are the sort of scenarios where they really need to be right but sadly those are the ones they struggle with. The second gotcha is that on small spikes or dips you need to predict well in advance in order to use a limit trade and avoid the exchange fees. Small reversals yield less profit which can be wiped out by a transaction fee. Initially I goofed on both the predictions and the fees so I actually managed to gradually reduce the total amount of bitcoin I was holding to about 80% of what we had initially purchased. But hey, I was learning. It was also great that for much of November and December, bitcoin was soaring in value faster than I could lose it with noob mistakes. In December, after teaching myself to use the limit trade features (using youtube videos), we bought a few thousand dollars more bitcoin and started honing the new found limit skills. This went a lot better. Limit trades force you to think about which way the currency will move next and for how long. You still have to keep your finger on the pulse to be able to work out how far a spike or drop will go but as long as you're close, the constant volatility in bitcoin just means you wait until you are correct. This new skill turned out to have been learned in a very timely fashion as this last week was a hellish bear run from $20k to under $12k much of which happened overnight last night. The nice thing about being able to limit-trade for free on an exchange is that you can make money while a price is crashing. The crash adds to the volatility so every crazy drop is followed by a little spike. You just have to predict where the next drop will end and how big the subsequent spike will be and then sell and buy respectively on each of them. I didn't get all of my predictions correct of course but I did manage to get enough of them right to minimise the losses. It meant staying up all night but in the end I got out of bitcoin while it was still at €12k (right before it dipped to €8.5k). If I'd known how bad the drop was going to be, I'd have sold everything 4 days ago but in retrospect and without the benefit of hindsight, I think being able to get out with a small profit was a great feat for a newbie. I left small even amounts in Litecoin, Ripple, Stellar and Bitcoin. Just enough to be disapointing if it's lost but not enough to cause pain and I'm taking a break for the rest of the year and hope to not be looking at the tickers again till January.

So while I like Poloniex as an exchange and I understand why they want and need to use tether, it's simply negligent to hold customer money in a currency that could literally disapear in a ball of smoke when a regulator sneezes.\n\nWhen I learned enough about USDT to know I didn't want to be anywhere near it, I transferred the bitcoin to GDAX and discovered that bitcoin transfer fees are actually pretty nasty. So much for a brave new world of free financial movement. If bitcoin doesn't fix this soon, it will relegate itself to the value store domain and leave altcoins to change the world.\n\nAnyway, back to the subject of learning to trade... I'm going to describe a learning journey that is full of mistakes. Treat this as a guide for what not to do and you might learn something.\n\nTrading at \"market rate\" means you just say how much of what you are holding (eg: bitcoin), you would like to sell and what currency you want to buy. You don't know how much of the currency being bought will end up belonging to you until the order closes (trade completes). This is usually a poor way to trade, but when you're a noob like me, it's the first method you get your head around.\n\nSo I watched the graph for the currency pair I was interested in (BTC-EUR). It was also great that for much of November and December, bitcoin was soaring in value faster than I could lose it with noob mistakes.\n\nIn December, after teaching myself to use the limit trade features (using youtube videos), we bought a few thousand dollars more bitcoin and started honing the new found limit skills. This went a lot better. Limit trades force you to think about which way the currency will move next and for how long. You still have to keep your finger on the pulse to be able to work out how far a spike or drop will go but as long as you're close, the constant volatility in bitcoin just means you wait until you are correct.\n\nThis new skill turned out to have been learned in a very timely fashion as this last week was a hellish bear run from $20k to under $12k much of which happened overnight last night. Just enough to be disapointing if it's lost but not enough to cause pain and I'm taking a break for the rest of the year and hope to not be looking at the tickers again till January.",

titleBuying and selling Cryptocurrencies - how to get a better deal in a bubble economy
bodyBuying and selling cryptocurrencies is a complex subject. There is more than one way to go about it. This article will attempt to address some trading tips that should help you to not show up at a gunfight with a butter knife. In my opinion, the single best way to buy cryptocurrency is to buy it from someone you know, who has it. Both of you will get a better deal and there is some comfort in dealing with a friend who will attempt to put things right if something goes wrong. Simply agree on a price and give your money and wallet address to the seller. The first time you do this, it's nice if both the buyer and seller are in the same room. The seller will usually have done this before and can talk the buyer through what's happening and what the confirmation process looks like. ## Fees Most transactions (moving crypto from one wallet address to another) will incur a small fee. The amount will depend on the currency and quantity being moved and sometimes the types of both sending and receiving wallets. This happens quite automatically and you simply have to decide whether buyer or seller or both will be covering the fee cost. ## Pricing There is no authority on crypto coin pricing. A coin is worth whatever someone is willing to pay. This is market rate pricing. If someone is happy to sell you a coin for less than the going rate, that's perfectly fine. They may be having difficulty selling it or they may not have access to the latest pricing information. People also often pay more than the market rate for a coin if there is poor supply in the place they are buying. To see (Coinbase) market rates for Bitcoin against Euros type "[1 BTC in EUR](https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=1+BTC+in+EUR)" into Google search. If you want to see average prices across different markets, take a look at [bitcoinaverage.com](https://bitcoinaverage.com/en/currency-markets/btc-to-eur). For specific and near real-time prices for any currency pair on any exchange, go to [tradingview.com](https://uk.tradingview.com/markets/cryptocurrencies/quotes-all/). ## Currency Symbols Get used to referring to currencies by their ticker symbols. A ticker symbol is a three or four letter abbreviation or acronym representing a currency. Most cryptocurrency symbols are not included in international standards or definitions and as a result different exchanges may refer to the same currency with different symbols. For example Kraken refers to Bitcoin with the symbol __XBT__ whereas many exchanges use __BTC__ to refer to the same Bitcoin. Anytime you see a cryptocurrency symbol starting with the letter __X__, it's a good indication that currency has more than one symbol. Prefixing with the letter X is an attempt to conform to international conventions that use X to denote currencies not controlled by a nation state. A list of cryptocurrencies and their symbols is available on [wikipedia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_cryptocurrencies) and a more complete list (but without alternate symbols) at [coinmarketcap](https://coinmarketcap.com/all/views/all/) ## Currency Pairs A currency pair is two currencies that can be exchanged. It indicates that either can be bought with the other. For example: - __USD-BTC__ represents the currency pair _United States Dollar_ and _Bitcoin_ indicating that USD can be exchanged for BTC or vice versa. - __USDT-BTC__ represents the currency pair USD __Tether__ and _Bitcoin_. Never confuse a Tether currency with the currency it purports to represent. They are not the same thing and in some cases, Tethers are a very dangerous and extremely worthless currency to hold. - __EUR-BTC__ represents the currency pair _Euro_ and _Bitcoin_. - __BTC-LTC__ represents the currency pair _Bitcoin_ and _Litecoin_. ## Exchanges There are many exchange markets and theoretically, you are free to choose one that gives you the best deal. In practice your options are limited by where you live, where you bank and what currency you have readily available. Some countries regulate trade in crypto currencies and this may further limit your options. Most exchanges also limit the currency pairs that can be traded. For example: - It's usually easy to exchange US Dollars or Euros for Bitcoin. It may be harder to buy altcoins with a fiat currency. Many altcoins are traded in BTC or ETH currency pairs. So to buy Stellar Lumens, you may have to first buy Bitcoin with your Euros or Dollars and then trade Bitcoin for your Lumens. Good exchanges regularly add to the list of currency pairs that can be traded. - My personal opinon is that exchanges which use Tether currencies (especially USDT) should not be trusted at all. There is absolutely no evidence that every USDT token is backed by a real US Dollar. Since that is the most important principle of a Tether currency and it is notably absent in USDT, any exchange willing to gamble customer money in the presence of this gaping flaw is criminally negligent. If you trust your money to an exchange which behaves in this way, I will laugh at you when you lose all your money. Sometimes you have no choice but to use such an exchange because the currency you want to buy is only available to you through that exchange. If that's the case, my advice is to move the currency back off that exchange and into a private wallet as soon as the trade is complete. This achieves two purposes: - your money is exposed for a shorter period of time and is safe as soon as you get it off the exchange. - the exchanges learn that customers don't trust them to hold money and their liquidity suffers until they put things right. ## Timing your trade Obviously your objective is to buy at the lowest possible price. Look at the chart for the currency you want to buy at [tradingview.com](https://uk.tradingview.com/markets/cryptocurrencies/quotes-all/). Check all the available timespans for the currency (1 day, 1 week, 1 month, etc). Try to determine if the price is in a bull (increasing price) or bear (decreasing price) trend. There is some guesswork involved. Try to time your buy at or near the bottom of a bear trend. In practice, it's impossible to know where the bottom is before it gets hit and goes the other way, but you can try to get close. If the currency is increasing in value try to avoid buying if you think it is more than halfway through a bull run. There is often a sharp dip after a strong peak and you might lose 30% or more of your investment just by buying 10 minutes too early. A common (but by no means consistent) trend is for a sharp peak to be followed by one or both of a sharp decline and a steady less sharp decline. This will be demoralising if you have bought near the peak. Good times to buy are often when the currency price has been stagnant for longer than normal and when the currency is on a slow but steady and predictable price increase. When you are selling, try to do so while the currency is doing great. Selling because you've just realised that it has been dropping for ages is often a punishing experience. Often long declines are followed by sharp increases. So panicking and selling at the bottom of a price drop is like getting punched in the gut three times. First, when you realise you've just lost a bunch of money. Second, when you accept this and sell in despair and finally a massive third gut-buster when the coin you just sold goes on a massive bull run and reaches new highs that nobody thought was possible. Of course you will have learned from my mistakes and you'll only buy low and sell high. :)
