Sebagai ganti tenaga dan usaha anda, anda akan dapat makanan dan tempat tinggal dengan harga yang sangat murah >\n\nDi dalam projek ini terdapat banyak pecahan projek kecil dan saya sangat gembira kerana dapat tinggal lama disana dan membenarkan saya untuk mempunyai pandangan global tentang apa yang berlaku di Lembah Bujang. Pada mulanya rancangan saya hanyalah untuk bersama dengan projek berkenaan selama 2 atau 3 minggu sahaja tetapi kita hanyalah merancang..\n\nSaya mulanya berada di sangkar tiram selama seminggu. Di situ saya berjumpa dengan orang orang yang sangat mesra walaupun ia sukar kerana  Bahasa English bukanlah mudah bagi semua orang termasuklah saya.\n\nProjek ini bermula dari usahasama di antara salah seorang penduduk kampong disitu I iaitu Paksu dan Universiti Sains Malaysia ( USM ) di mana pihak USM telah memberi peluang kepada Paksu untuk mengusahakan penternakan tiram dan dalam masa yang sama dapat memperbaiki kehidupan komuniti, menjaga alam sekitar dan meningkatkan kesedaran tentangnya. Di situ kita akan berjumpa orang dari bandar datang ke sana dan bekerjasama dan belajar dengan dia antara satu dengan yang lain. Kami menaiki boat sepanjang sungai Merbok sehinggalah ke laut dimana terletaknya pulau syurga iaitu Pulau Bidan berjiran dengan Pulau Telor dan Pulau Song-Song. Di sanalah sekumpulan anak melayu muda memulakan projek komuniti permakultur dengan misi untuk menjaga pulau dari keadaan yang tidak terkawal, hakisan tanah dan pencemaran.\n\nDi Pulau Bidan terdapat banyak binatang yang hidup didalamnya seperti serangga, haiwan reptilia dan lain lain tetapi juga pulau tersebut dipenuhi sampah sarap, asbestos ( yang di tingalkan oleh tentera Australia yang menjadikan sebagai tapak latihan pada 1980 an) dan hakisan tanah yang semakin membimbangkan. Projek ini juga berkonsepkan kehidupan lestari untuk mencari jawapan untuk menangani masalah alam sekitar yang semakin krisis.\n\nPulau itu boleh dikatakan agak kecil dimana kita boleh mendaki bukit disebalik pulau hanya selama 1 jam sahaja. Di sebabkan itulah saya membuat keputusan untuk meninggalkan pulau selepas beberapa hari disana dan kembali ke projek di sangkar tiram.\n\nUntuk saya sebagai seorang wanita Perancis yang tinggal di bandar dengan penduduk lebih dari 1 juta orang, suasana di sangkar tiram adalah baru buat saya. Saya tinggal dirumah terapung atas sungai yang akan bergoyang oleh ombak yang dihasilkan oleh bot yang lalu lalang dan juga dikelilingi oleh pokok bakau. Tempat itu tersangatlah indah ! Saya tidak pernah bosan dengan pemandangan semulajadi disitu, matahari terbit, dikelilingi binatang ( monyet, kucing, ayam, biawak, ular dan burung ). Malangnya saya agak sedih apabila melihat banyak sampah sarap yang mengalir bersama arus sungai disebabkan oleh pencemaran yang tiada akhir oleh manusia. Orang tempatan disana memberitahu saya, 70 tahun dahulu kita dapat melihat banyak gajah melintas sungai dan buaya di dalamnya. Malangnya keadaan tidak seperti dahulu.\n\nIdea untuk menjadi sukarelawan melalui Workaway boleh digunakan dalam pelbagai cara. Tentulah bagus sekirinya kita dapat mengembara dengan kos yang murah ( saya hanya belanja RM20 setiap hari untuk makan dan tempat tinggal dan dapat melibatkan diri dengan pelbagai aktiviti dan kerja ) Ia juga salah satu cara untuk mengembara selain dari tempat tempat yang komersial.\n\nbagi saya sebagai sukarelawan, ia sangat bermakna dan membuka peluang untuk saya belajar banyak perkara. Di sebabkan itu saya tidak pernah merasakan saya membuang masa bersama sama dengan projek disini walaupun saya tidak dapat sesen pun. Lagipun saya sangat hormat kepada semua yang terlibat kerana telah mengorbankan banyak masa, duit tenaga dan wang simpanan untuk menjadikan dunia lebih baik. Sehingga kini mereka tidak dapat menghasilkan duit yang cukup. Hasil yang mereka dapat, mereka salurkan kepada keluarga yang miskin di dalam kampong berdekatan, memberi peluang kepada anak miskin untuk sambung belajar.\n\nSaya tidak mengira berapa banyak detik detik berharga sepanjang saya berada disini, bersendiri, bersama sukarelawan yang lain, bersama ahli ahli projek dan penduduk di kampong. Banyak perasaan yang berbelah bahagi ketika saya di Lembah Bujang.\n\nJujurnya saya mampu untuk menulis panjang tentang projek ternakan tiram tetapi saya tidak yakin dengan informasi yang sangat banyak dan pantas ketika ini.\n\nDikesempatan ini saya ingin menzahirkan sedalam dalam terima kasih kepada semua yang telah berkongsi pengalaman bersama saya – yang takkan berakhir.       "body": "I would like to share my experience in an oyster farm, in Kedah state, in the North of Malaysia.\n\n![oysterfarm.jpg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmQhfjVDh2KZdFhDjdKYp1BQngzcnQg8Vyvo4y52phocV3/oysterfarm.jpg)\n*The oyster farm*\n\nI arrived in this project in November 2016, thanks to the website Workaway (a platform online where you can find some project s that need volunteers : in exchange of some working hours, you get a free or cheap food and accommodation). The description was about a paradise island where you could learn and experiment permaculture. Of course, the idea sounded nice to me and I applied. At this time, living 5 months in an oyster farm was far from my expectations (especially as a vegetarian!).\n\nThe project here is made of many micro-projects and I’m glad that I stayed so long because it allowed me to have a vision more global of what’s happening in the Valley of Bujang (Lembah Bujang). When I first arrived I tough I would stay for 2 or 3 weeks but my plans took a very different twist…\n\nI first landed at the oyster farm where I stayed for one week. I met there very friendly and welcoming people even tough English was not always easy for everyone, including me.\n\nThe project started with a partnership between Paksu, a local villager and the University of Science Malaysia. The university offered to Paksu to work with them on an oyster farm project that would in the same time improve the local community life, protect the environment and raise the awareness about it. \n\nMany activities are developed here : oyster farming of course (the oysters help cleaning the river), planting mangrove trees, the construction of a guesthouse, a new restaurant, welcoming customers and visitors, fishing, teaching English to local kids, raising environment awareness,… \nAnd others activities more related to the local culture : going to kenduris (weddings), celebrating the Ramadan, cooking local food, meeting people from the villages around, swimming in the river, share some kueh mueh (local finger food), etc. \n\n![DSC03511.JPG](https://steemitimages.com/DQmbmTx4soAAR1W3EaffXZhQ9PF11ufW1DfJKMLtbxCYQ25/DSC03511.JPG)\n*Wedding between a french and a malay*\n\nHere, local people (kids, young and older people) and volunteers from around the world are working and living together. The project wants to be open and accessible to everyone. Informality is more normal than formality and to me it is very important if you want to include everyone. People from the city work with people from the countryside and they learn from each other. We set sail down the river of Merbok until the ocean and there, not far from Pulau Telur (egg island) and Pulau Song-Song (pregnant island), is the paradise island of Pulau Bidan (midwife island), where few young Malays started this wonderful project of permaculture community with for goals to protect the island from mass tourism, pollution and erosion. \n\nThe island is lush, full of life (animals, fishes, insects) but also full of trashes, asbestos (let by the Australian army who had a base here in the 1980s) and the erosion is growing year after year. The project is to create a sustainable life to find an answer to the current environmental crisis. \n\nThe island is small; we can across it in about one hour. That’s one of the reason why after just few days on the island I decided to go back to the oyster farm.\nFor me, French girl from a one million inhabitant city, the environment here is totally new. I live on the water, in the middle of the mangrove, on a kind of floating house that move with the tide and the boats passing by. The place is gorgeous. I’m not getting bored of the landscapes, sunrises, animals around us (river life, monkeys, cats, chickens, monitor lizards, snakes, birds,…). But I got weary to look at the trashes passing by, hundreds of them every day… and every night because unfortunately the human pollution never stops. The locals told me that before, about 70 years ago, you could see elephants and crocodiles crossing the river. Nowadays, not anymore.\n\nThe idea of being volunteer through Workaway can be use in different ways. Of course it’s a good way to travel cheap (here I spend 5euros per day and get food, accommodation and can participate to plenty of activities in exchange of few working hours). It’s also a good way to travel off the beaten tracks.  \nBut for me, being volunteer here means a lot more and gave me access to plenty of learning. My english also get better and now I like to learn new languages whereas for a long time I didn’t like it.\nI’ve learned oysters farming, gardening, some construction skills, driving a scooter and cooking some malay food. I’ve learned about permaculture, environment and Malaysian geography. To live in a different culture is not easy every day and I had some hard time but all the experiences I had have more value to me than money. That’s why I don’t think I’m wasting my time in a project like this one even if I didn’t make any money. Moreover, I have a full respect for the people who participate to this project all of them as volunteers, giving time, energy and personal savings to make this world better. Because until now they still don’t have enough money to generate incomes. The money they get goes to the poor families of the villages around, allowing for example some kids to go studying. \n\nI can’t count the magic moments I spent here, alone, with other volunteers, with the people from the project and with some local villagers.       "body": "J'aimerais partager l'expérience que j'ai vécue dans une ferme d'huîtres dans la région de Kedah, en Malaisie. \n\n![oysterfarm.jpg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmQhfjVDh2KZdFhDjdKYp1BQngzcnQg8Vyvo4y52phocV3/oysterfarm.jpg)\n*The oyster farm*\n\nJe suis arrivée en Novembre 2016 dans ce projet grâce au site de volontariat Workaway (l’échange proposé est en général de travailler 4-5 heures en échange d’un lit et de nourriture). La description parlait d'une île paradisiaque où l'on pouvait apprendre et expérimenter la permaculture. Forcément, l'idée m'a plût et j'ai postulé. À ce moment-là je ne me doutais pas encore que j'allais rester cinq mois dans une ferme d'huîtres !\n\nLe projet développé ici comporte de nombreux micro-projets et je suis aujourd'hui bien heureuse d'être restée si longtemps car cela m'a permit d'avoir une vision plus globale de ce qui se joue ici dans la vallée de Bujang. À mon arrivée je pensais rester deux ou trois semaines sur le projet mais mes plans ont rapidement pris une autre tournure... \nJe suis arrivée en premier lieu à la ferme d'huîtres où je suis restée une semaine. J'y ai rencontré des gens très gentils et très accueillants bien que l'anglais n'était pas toujours facile pour tout le monde, moi y compris.\n\nLe projet ici a commencé par un partenariat entre Paksu, un villageois du coin et l'université de sciences de Malaisie. L'université proposa à Paksu de travailler ensemble sur un projet de ferme d'huîtres qui permettrait d'améliorer la vie de la communauté locale tout en protégeant l'environnement et en sensibilisant les locaux et les touristes. De nombreuses activités y sont développées : l'élevage d'huîtres bien sûr (les huîtres lavent l'eau de la rivière), le plantage d'arbres de mangroves, la construction d'une guesthouse, le développement d'un restaurant, la pêche, nager dans la rivière, l’apprentissage de l'anglais aux enfants, la sensibilisation à l'environnement,... \nEt d'autres encore, parfois très liées à la culture locale : participer aux kenduris (mariages), célébrer le ramadan, cuisiner de la nourriture locale, rencontrer les gens, nager avec les enfants, partager quelques kueh mueh (nourriture locale),... \n\n![DSC03511.JPG](https://steemitimages.com/DQmbmTx4soAAR1W3EaffXZhQ9PF11ufW1DfJKMLtbxCYQ25/DSC03511.JPG)\n*Wedding between a french and a malay*\n\nIci, locaux (enfants, jeunes, vieux) et volontaires venus d'ici et d'ailleurs travaillent et vivent ensemble. Le projet se veut ouvert et accessible. Les gens venus de la ville travaillent avec ceux de la campagne et on apprend les uns des autres. On descend la rivière Merbok jusqu'à l'océan et ici, non loin de Pulau Song Song (l'île de la femme enceinte) et de Pulau Telur (l'île de l'œuf) se trouve Pulau Bidan (l'île de la sage-femme), petite île paradisiaque où quelques jeunes malais ont commencé ce magnifique projet de communauté permaculture avec pour idée de protéger l'île du tourisme de masse, de la pollution, de l'érosion. L'île est luxuriante, pleine de vie mais aussi pleine de déchets, d'amiante (laissée par l'armée Australienne qui avait érigé une base ici dans les années 1980..) et l'érosion de fait dangereusement sentir. Le projet est donc de créer un mode de vie durable afin de pouvoir répondre aux différentes crises environnementales et sociétales actuelles.\nL'île est petite, on peut la traverser en une heure environ. Exceptés quelques groupes de vacanciers locaux et quelques pêcheurs il n'y a que nous les volontaires venus d'ici et la dans le monde et un, deux ou trois des jeunes malais qui ont initié le projet.\n\n![DSC04810.JPG](https://steemitimages.com/DQmYf9F7xKaGyRLj9sY4Ty1gHFTrWpXuFQX43bMBG9dBYx9/DSC04810.JPG)\n*The island Pulau Bidan*\n\nAyant quitté la France seulement deux mois et demi auparavant, je crois que je n'avais pas l'envie de vivre à nouveau avec des personnes venant majoritairement d'Europe. J'avais envie de découvrir, de tenter de comprendre une autre culture. C'est entre autres pour cela que après seulement quelques jours sur l'île je suis revenue à la ferme d'huîtres.\nPour moi, française qui vient de la ville, l'environnement ici est tout à fait nouveau. Ici je vis sur l'eau, au milieu de la mangrove, sur une sorte de maison flottante qui bouge au gré des marais et des bateaux qui passent. Le lieu est magnifique. Je ne me lasse pas de ces paysages, de ces levers de soleil, de ces animaux qui nous entourent (poissons, singes, chats, poules, loutres, oiseaux, serpents,...). Je suis lasse en revanche de regarder les déchets défiler par centaines chaque jour... et chaque nuit car malheureusement la pollution humaine ne connaît pas de repos. On me dit qu'avant, il y a environ soixante-dix ans on pouvait observer des éléphants et des crocodiles traverser la rivière. Plus maintenant.\nLe principe d'un volontariat comme Work Away peut être vu de nombreuses différentes manières. Bien sûr c'est un moyen de voyager pour pas cher (ici je dépense cinq euros par jour en échange de l'hébergement, de la nourriture et de la participation à toutes les activités proposées par le lieu) et de voir des paysages hors des sentiers battus par les touristes. Mais mon volontariat ici à pour moi beaucoup plus de signification et a été la source de nombreux apprentissages. Cela englobe tout un panel de traditions, de coutumes, de manières de parler, de créer des relations, de travailler, etc. Je sais maintenant parler un peu de malais ce qui m'a permit de communiquer avec les locaux qui ne parlaient pas anglais ici et en Indonésie. Mon anglais aussi a bien progressé et le voyage m'a en quelques sortes réconciliée avec l'apprentissage des langues... J'ai pu acquérir quelques compétences manuelles en construction, élevage d'huîtres, jardinage, conduire un scooter et cuisiner malais. J'en sais plus sur la permaculture, la protection de l'environnement et la géographie malaisienne. \n\n![oies.jpg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmVpZuSumyRjeqDFUofHthBLbNxLjuGWAs4da8swvz6xB5/oies.jpg)\n*Pulau Bidan island*\n\nJ'ai aussi beaucoup appris sur moi-même durant ces mois-ci, ce qui n'a pas toujours été facile mais qui m'a fait grandir. Vivre dans une autre culture n'est pas facile au quotidien mais la richesse que l'on peut y trouver a pour moi bien plus de valeurs que des pièces de monnaies. C'est bien pour cela que je ne crois pas perdre mon temps en restant six mois dans un projet comme celui-là, sans faire d'argent. J'ai d'ailleurs un grand respect pour toutes les personnes qui participent à ce projet car elles consacrent leur temps, leur argent personnel et leur énergie à rendre ce monde meilleur, toutes en tant que bénévoles, n'ayant pas encore assez d'argent pour générer des revenus. Car l'argent produit est soit réutilisé dans le projet soit versé aux personnes dans le besoin dans les villages alentours, permettant par exemple à des jeunes de faire des études.\nImpossible de compter les innombrables moments magiques que j’ai passés ici, seule, avec d’autres volontaires, avec les personnes du projet et avec des villageois. Anna is from Finland and I come from France. At this time we didn't expect that a bit less than one year later we will be travelling together on the roads of New-Zealand. First we wanted to make a more specific plan, but finally we didn't t have time to make any plans and we just left with the willingness to reach the south island where we've never been before and explore the country. \n\nThis article is about some aspects of our travel, what have made the travel easier and what we've done until now...:\n**Hitch-hiking**\n**Accommodation**\n**Hiking and other places**\n**Two special adventure we had**\n**Useful app and websites**\n\n**Hitch-hiking**\nThe good thing about not having any plans, is that you are never in a rush to go anywhere ! Both of us did already hitch-hiking before but not much.  It was quite exciting and also a bit challenging to think about doing that. After 22 days travelling, I can say it was an excellent decision and not only because it's cheap ! \n\n• We always have a quick ride: we generally wait less than 10mn to get a ride. Only once we had to wait about an hour. \n• So far, we didn't use a sign because it was not really necessary.\n• We didn't have any troubles, we always felt safe and never felt in danger expect one day, we had 3 different rides with 3 different Indian guys and the three of them were hoping that we will sleep with them at one point. We taught that there is something wrong with Indian guys, not all of them of course but it was not the first time we experienced that...\n• We saved a lot of money. Travelling in NZ can be really expensive, doesn't matter if you travel by bus, train, ferry or car. \n• A lot of people that gave us a ride went further than where they were going, just to help us. \n• We met people from NZ, Australia, Argentina, Germany, Brazil, Holland, England, France, Islanders … We were especially happy to meet local people because while working in Auckland we met mostly foreigners and we found it was hard to meet Kiwis and Maoris.\n\n**Accommodation**\nLodging in NZ can be very expensive (25 dollars per night in a guesthouse, between 18 to 50 in camping) and we think it's not worth it to spend  money in that, when we have a tent. Usually there is an easy access to public toilets (in NZ they are super clean!) and public showers on the beachs. Until now, we found a good balance between wild camping (5 nights), camping (2 night), Couchsurfing (4 nights in 2 different places), WOOFing (5 nights), guesthouse (2 nights). So far, we've spent 70$ in total for accomodation. \n\nTo find our wild camping spot we look on the map where there are some tracks. By the track it's easy to find a clear spot for pitching a tent and there will be no people at night. It's a 7 hours walk with some very steep parts but we managed to do it in 5 hours without rushing too much. We were 4 of us and did it in 4 days. It's a easy walk with very little steep parts, so it's suitable for everybody. We were there just before the school holidays so it was already starting to be a bit crowded, but just “NZ  crowded” (which doesn't mean many people) so it was totally bearable. The first night we slept in the bush and the two following ones on a beach. On the beach we were a bit worried about the tide  but we had no problem in the end. We talked with them while an hour ride to reach Taupo's lake where they dropped us on the side in a place where we could plant the tent. We proposed them to join us to spend sometime together and -we were surprised- they came back with a lot of bourbon-cola cans. It was the first time we really spent time with Maoris. We found it very hard to follow their accent added  with a lot of slang words. They invited us to a night-bush-ride on a hunting tracks which was a bit scary -as the driver didn't always seem to know what he was doing- but even tough, we had a lot of fun. When they brought us back Anna realised she lost her sleeping bag and one of them offered us to sleep on his couch. We accepted the offer and it was a really unexpected adventure to end up sleeping in this messy living room full of kid's toys, food, a huge TV screen and a Christmas tree. \n\nThe second was the time we spend with this 60 years old half Maori-half Scottish man who picked us for a 4 hours ride from Tongariro to Wellington. After two or three hours drive, we told him to let us on the side of the road anywhere we could do wild camping but we told us that he felt responsible of us, that now we were friends and that he will pay us the night in he Motel where he was going (and we would have our own room). He was very friendly, we felt safe and told him that if he was happy to invite us then we will happily accept the proposal as we were really dreaming of a shower after the Tongariro hike we did. We had a comfy bedroom, a nice indian meal in the restaurant nearby and a good sleep. The day after we helped him all day with his job delivering art in the richest flats in Wellington ! His job is to drive from Auckland to Wellington to deliver some paints, sculptures and other art pieces to some  places and people. It was a really nice experience we will probably remember a long time.\n\n\nUseful apps and websites\nWOOFing-Work Away- HelpX\nWith these 3 websites you can find projects all around the world that need volunteers. The idea behind all these 3 platforms  is in general 4-5 hours of work a day and you get free food and accommodation. From the WOOFing website you can find mainly farming jobs. Helpx and workaway both have a wider selection of different types of jobs. It is great way of earning new skills, to meet people, to help and make travelling cheaper.\n\nCouchsurfing\nCouchsurfing is a online platform where you can find a host in the places you want to visit. You create your profile as a guest or a host and then you can either find people who can host you or you can offer people to crash in your place. It's an awesome concept that allows us to meet local people and stay in a place for free. \n\nHitch-wiki\nHitchwiki is a free collaborative guide for hitchhikers ! There are many different information : where to hitchhike, safety tips, testimonies, strategies,...\n\nWikitravel\nWikitravel is a collaborative travel guide online. There you can find a lot of information about travelling, about countries and cities, where to sleep, to eat, what to do, etc. \n\nMaps.me\nMaps.me is an offline map app you can download for free ! You must predownload the map of the area you want to explore and it shows you where you are even if you're not online !
