Using myself as a case study, at around 5.30am I am already prepared and on my way to the office at Ikeja, when I close from work I start my journey home and if I am lucky my route home would be smooth, but that’s hardly the case most times and this is my schedule for about 5days a week.\n\nLast Week Friday, around 7pm to be precise I amongst others was stuck in a serious traffic along the Ikeja express road.\n I closed from Work around 6.30pm and boarded a bus home, on my way home we were stuck in traffic or should I say Grounded in traffic. The bus I boarded couldn’t even move and after about 30 minutes of been grounded, I and many other passengers exited the bus and decided to continue our journey with our legs. I recorded a short clip of the Traffic and my journey home which I attached at the end of this post.\n\nFrom the video you can notice from that no cars can move including Motor bikes. The cause of the traffic is still unknown to me but it covered a large area. Too many cars for the roadway due to inadequate mass transit options or other reasons.\n2. Obstacles in the road causing a blockage and merger. These can be any of the following:\n•\tDouble parking\n•\tRoad work\n•\tLane closure due to utility work\n•\tRoad narrowing down\n•\tAn accident\n3. Traffic signals out of sync many times on purpose or occasionally when the computers are malfunctioning.\n4. Inadequate green time\n5. Too many pedestrians crossing not permitting cars to turn\n6. Too many trucks on the road due to inadequate rail freight opportunities\n7. Even if gate would cost like 10cents it’s just a thing that people see as huge annoyance( lost of tiny amount of money at toll gate annoy people more than standing in traffic jamm for few hours)\n\n2.\tCar Pooling.... people traveling daily to same office or surrounding area and coming back should travel together. This way 100 cars on road can be reduced to 25 cars. Organizations should also encourage and support such actions of their staff. As a BONUS you save on fuel, vehicle wear and tear, carbon emission, daily driving hassle and travelling with friends / colleagues is always better than travelling alone. However, this will be most beneficial when companies offer...\n\n3.\tFlexible Work Hours.... imagine what havoc it would be when hundreds of thousand people leave their homes around 8:00 a.m. in the morning for work. If organizations allow flexible timings to their employees the flow of traffic can be evenly distributed to 2...3 hours. As a BONUS employees get a non monetary perk where they can select a time most appropriate for them (means a lot to me for sure!). Where timing is of essence such as customer dealing, we can have...\n\n4.\tCorporate Conveyance Facility... an optional conveyance can be provided to employees either free or subsidized. A bus or hi-roof will reduce number of vehicles to 3% to 20%. This also saves on over all fuel consumption, carbon emissions and as a BONUS you can even get a nap after a tiring work day instead of driving for hours. This might increase individual travel time, which can be managed by having....\n\n5.\tSeparate Lanes...and bus stops... there should be bus stops and separate lanes and for cars, buses and motorcycles and this should be followed in letter and spirit. This will not only streamline the traffic flow, but would definitely reduce the number of road accidents. However, to ensure the efficiency of above all we need...\n\n6.\tZero tolerance on Traffic Violations... a system that enforces the traffic law and has Zero tolerance for violation will significantly reduce traffic jams and accidents and will streamline the flow of traffic. \n\nThanks For reading, stay tuned for more informative updates.
