| body | http://i.imgur.com/l2z8MHm.jpg ## Woff, woff! #### Hello @goellago12, Nice to meet you! I'm a guide dog living in KR community. I can see that you want to contribute to KR community and communicate with other Korean Steemians. I really appreciate it and I'd be more than happy to help. KR tag is used mainly by Koreans, but we give warm welcome to anyone who wish to use it. I'm here to give you some advice so that your post can be viewed by many more Koreans. I'm a guide dog after all and that's what I do! Tips: - **If you're not comfortable to write in Korean, I highly recommend you write your post in English rather than using Google Translate.**<br>Unfortunately, Google Translate is terrible at translating English into Korean. You may think you wrote in perfect Korean, but what KR Steemians read is gibberish. Sorry, even Koreans can't understand your post written in *Google-Translated* Korean. - So, here's what might happen afterward. Your Google-Translated post might be mistaken as a spam so that whales could downvote your post. Yikes! I hope that wouldn't happen to you. - If your post is not relevant to Korea, not even vaguely, but you still use KR tag, Whales could think it as a spam and downvote your post. Double yikes! - If your post is somebody else's work(that is, plagiarism), then you'll definitely get downvotes. - If you keep abusing tags, you may be considered as a spammer. It may result to put you into the blacklist. Oops! I sincerely hope that you enjoy Steemit without getting downvotes. Because Steemit is a wonderful place. See? Korean Steemians are kind enough to raise a guide dog(that's me) to help you! Woff, woff! 🐶 |

| body | I live in the US as a legal alien with student visa, and none of my family members lives here nor has a green card or citizenship. So, everything going on about DACA or immigration law has been out of my attention. Well, as a job seeker, not being a green card holder actually affects me on getting a full time job since a lot of companies don't want to do the paper works for me. But still, I wasn't really interested in all these issues going on these days until I saw a comment on a YouTube video uploaded by Vox. [youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UzYDqQDNFzc] Basically, DACA is "a permit that protects you from getting deported and allows you to work legally in the U.S." (here, "you" meaning by a person who was brought into the U.S. by her/his parents when she/he was under 16) This video explains the background of how DACA came into effect under Obama's administration and what is going to happen when it is rescinded as Trump and his administration intend to. So, after watching this video with almost zero knowledge of DACA previously, I was expecting to see comments criticizing Trump. However, surprisingly there was a lot of comments criticizing DACA and its recipients including this Korean American guy who came into the U.S. at the age of 3 for heart surgery. <img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-1216" src="https://twentiestodayblog.files.wordpress.com/2017/09/2-e1504754920527.png" alt="2" width="816" height="202" /> Under his comments, a lot of replies by people who disagree with DACA and think that its recipients are taking advantage of legal Americans were followed. The most frequent response was "go back to your country and come back legally" like Aidan Kelly and Maria Smith. <img class=" size-full wp-image-1246 alignnone" src="https://twentiestodayblog.files.wordpress.com/2017/09/3.png" alt="3" width="390" height="52" /><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-1260" src="https://twentiestodayblog.files.wordpress.com/2017/09/mi.png" alt="mi" width="545" height="73" /> Some people defend Taewoo Kim by saying that the naturalization and immigration process is not as simple and takes way too long, which makes it hard for people to move into America legally and makes a system like DACA inevitable. <img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-1273" src="https://twentiestodayblog.files.wordpress.com/2017/09/6.png" alt="6" width="554" height="190" /> <img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-1275" src="https://twentiestodayblog.files.wordpress.com/2017/09/44.png" alt="44" width="544" height="124" /> <img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-1279" src="https://twentiestodayblog.files.wordpress.com/2017/09/66.png" alt="66" width="546" height="226" /> Their response might be offensive to a person who already have obtained citizenship after going through the long process and paying a huge amount of money like Maria Smith who mentioned that Taewoo Kim should go back to Korea and do military service. <img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-1278" src="https://twentiestodayblog.files.wordpress.com/2017/09/5.png" alt="5" width="556" height="330" /> Seeing all these comments, I couldn't support any of the sides because both of their points seemed to make sense. (I exclude all the racists and haters' comments) People who moved here at a young age had no choice but to follow their parents whether they decided to move for safety reason or financial reason. Since they were raised and went through most of education in America, most likely they are Americanized and would be hard to adjust in a country where they came from or don't even speak their language if they go back. But if a program like DACA exists, there will be people who might use it as a means to skip the immigration process and be a citizen eventually using their kids. I've actually heard of a case like that and thought that might be one of the biggest problems with DACA. The thing is, there are already a lot of children of undocumented immigrants who have obtained DACA. What Trump is trying to do is to take it back all of a sudden. It just doesn't sound right. Are they all going to be deported after DACA is revoked since they are officially illegal immigrants without DACA? Also thinking about the foundation of America, aren't they a country of immigrants? If undocumented immigrants are doing well as a part of American society, don't they need to be accepted as a citizen? But what about the legal immigrants who have been already paying tax and paid their time and money to get citizenship? It just leaves me a lot of questions that contradict each other, so... like really, I do not know what is right or wrong. |

| body | I just wanted to write about what I've been doing these days as a recent college graduate/a job seeker (취준생=취업준비생; literally a person who is preparing to be hired). <strong>1. Constantly looking at job postings</strong> I would call myself a full-time job seeker, so what I do on a daily basis is to look for a job. Here are job posting websites I've been using. 1)Indeed This is one of the most broadly used websites by job seekers as well as companies. I also use Indeed most often because it is pretty much intuitive. You simply get job postings you want with right key words you type in, not unnecessary information or advertisement (there are sponsored job postings that come up first, but they are still related to your searching key words). So, what I do with this website is basically to search key words. For example, I typed "research internship," and the search result comes out like this. <img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-1025" src="https://twentiestodayblog.files.wordpress.com/2017/09/capture.png" alt="Capture" width="1256" height="485"> Sponsored postings come up first and then other job postings come up as you sort by either relevance or date. If you click a job posting, it takes you to its application website or a little window to submit your resume and cover letter directly from Indeed. For me, the little thing that shows when it was posted was very helpful (you wouldn't want to apply for a position that was posted months ago). On the left, you can see your search history and how many of the new positions are posted since your last search. You can also get new job alerts by email if you set up a notification. On the right, you see the average salary of research interns in New York City. If you know what kind of job you want or have a specific field you want to work in, this might be the best website. However, if you are still not sure about what you want to do and just want to see all the job postings available, Indeed might not be the one you would want to use since you have to type a specific key word. 2)LinkedIn <img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-1095" src="https://twentiestodayblog.files.wordpress.com/2017/09/d.png" alt="d" width="791" height="397"> As you may already know, networking is a very important part if you were to get a job in the US. I guess LinkedIn used it so well that they became successful. You can upload anything about yourself that hiring mangers need to know; your picture, experiences, projects, skills, interests, etc. Also, your co-workers or boss can add a comment about your skills to prove that you actually have the skills. There is a lot of company that requires you to provide with your LinkedIn profile instead of your resume. So, I guess now it is something that you should have if you want more chances to get a job. I personally like this way better for the fact that you can put more information about yourself whereas resume can only contain limited information. You can also search for jobs on LinkedIn as well as get emails on updated job postings. I've been also trying it but what I don't like about their search system is that once you click the post it takes you to another job search website, whereas LinkedIn directly get you to the application page. 3)Starr Search<img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-1128" src="https://twentiestodayblog.files.wordpress.com/2017/09/ss.png" alt="ss" width="1093" height="451"> It is an online college job boards. My college also has one and it is considerably a good system for students for the fact that many of companies are looking for entry level knowing that they are hiring students or recent graduates. Since I started looking for a job, I went on several interviews and all of them were from Starr Search (now I am realizing this, and wow, I am so thankful to my school). Like I mentioned before, if you are not sure what kind of jobs you want, this might be a good one since you don't really need to search any key words but you could just scroll through. All you need to do is to upload your resume and cover letter and submit them to a position you are interested in. What I liked about Starr is that there is a lot of companies that you can apply for without cover letter (yes, I'm afraid of writing, especially about myself). <strong>2. Writing cover letters & resume and revising and revising...</strong> This is what takes me most of my time and gets me so stressed out. Although I'm looking for job positions in a specific field, my cover letter can't be same for different companies. You should at least change the name of the company and the name of the job position. Not only that, you should do some research about the company, what are the things they value the most, what they do and have achieved, etc.. It's just a lot. A lot of things to look at. When you are done with research for the company, now it is time to connect yourself to the things that the company want for their employees. At the same time, you need to show how passionate you are about the job as a person who's about to get into a professional career after college. Yea, it is stressful and there is no exact answer for cover letter. But there is one good thing about writing cover letter; it gives you a chance to know more about yourself and time to ask questions to yourself about what you like and you don't. But still, it is sometimes a frustrating process and makes you want to apply for a job that doesn't require a cover letter.. but 그런건 찾기 절라 어렵고 있어도 절라 작은 회사거나 이상한 회사거나 ㅠ From my experience, reading a lot of cover letter samples can help. I got some sense of how to write cover letter after reading some tips and samples <a href="https://www.thebalance.com/parts-of-a-cover-letter-2060308">here</a>. <strong>3. Trying to take classes at Coursera</strong> <strong>4. Trying to live a regular life</strong> What I mean by regular life is to go to bed and wake up at a certain time as well as do something I can do regularly like putting one posting on my blog per day. I know from my past experience I am a very lazy person and would do nothing if I'm not given a task. So, this is kind of like a life task for me. |

However, if you are still not sure about what you want to do and just want to see all the job postings available, Indeed might not be the one you would want to use since you have to type a specific key word. 2) LinkedIn <img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-1095" src="https://twentiestodayblog.files.wordpress.com/2017/09/d.png" alt="d" width="791" height="397"> As you may already know, networking is a very important part if you were to get a job in the US. 3) Starr Search<img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-1128" src="https://twentiestodayblog.files.wordpress.com/2017/09/ss.png" alt="ss" width="1093" height="451"> It is an online college job boards. |

"body": "I just wanted to write about what I've been doing these days as a recent college graduate/a job seeker (취준생=취업준비생; literally a person who is preparing for a job).\n\n<strong>1. Constantly looking at job postings</strong>\nI would call myself a full-time job seeker, so what I do on a daily basis is to look for a job. Here are job posting websites I've been using.\n\n1) Indeed\nThis is one of the most broadly used websites by job seekers as well as companies. I also use Indeed most often because it is pretty much intuitive. You simply get job postings you want with right key words you type in, not unnecessary information or advertisement (there are sponsored job postings that come up first, but they are still related to your searching key words).\n\nSo, what I do with this website is basically to search key words. For example, I typed \"research internship,\" and the search result comes out like this.\n\n<img class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1025\" src=\"https://twentiestodayblog.files.wordpress.com/2017/09/capture.png\" alt=\"Capture\" width=\"1256\" height=\"485\">\n\nSponsored postings come up first and then other job postings come up as you sort by either relevance or date. If you click a job posting, it takes you to its application website or a little window to submit your resume and cover letter directly from Indeed.\n\nFor me, the little thing that shows when it was posted was very helpful (you wouldn't want to apply for a position that was posted months ago).\n\nOn the left, you can see your search history and how many of the new positions are posted since your last search. You can also get new job alerts by email if you set up a notification. On the right, you see the average salary of research interns in New York City.\n\nIf you know what kind of job you want or have a specific field you want to work in, this might be the best website. | body | I recently found out about this website called "<a href="http://humansofseoul.com" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Humans of Seoul</a>" on Facebook. They cast random people on the streets in Seoul and ask them some questions to get to know about their personal and unique story. They simply post scripts of the conversation between the interviewer and a random person both in Korean and English translation, and each posting is very short; some of the story is just about 1 or 2 sentences like this kid's response: <p style="text-align: center;"><img class=" aligncenter" src="http://68.media.tumblr.com/6f837d2b9184683827f6169ca855535c/tumblr_osqfbyfL411t42noqo1_500.jpg" alt="“This watermelon is my pillow. | body | Recently, I saw an interesting news saying Seoul was ranked as the number one city of the world in people section in a National Geographic's research in 2016. As a previous Seouler (a resident of Seoul) and now as a New Yorker, I was like, 'How is that even possible? All I've heard and seen while living in Seoul is something bad for people like heavy education for teenagers, too much competition for job seekers, and people working extremely long hours and getting paid too little. Plus, 2016 was even before the crazy president was impeached.' I remember when I was in Korea in 2012, I was getting minimum wage which was ₩4,850 (around $4.50) per hour for working at Dunkin Donut's, and I even saw my friend who was working as a staff at a hair salon getting way lower than the minimum wage while working freaking long hours. I saw a Korean article that said an average price amount an office worker paid for lunch in 2012 was 6,007 won, which means that you can't even buy a lunch after working one hour with the minimum wage. I know this is still happening although the minimum wage has been raised to $6 per hour (which is still too low in my opinion) this year. So, with so much doubts about this research, I decided to look in detail, like how it has been done and what indicators they used to measure the sustainability of each country. As you can see, Seoul is really the number one city that has even beat European cities. How did this happen? 1. Demographics Let's look at the first indicator, demographics (red box). According to Arcadis (a research company that conducted this research), dependency ratio metered by World Bank is the only one to measure demographics. I didn't know what "dependency ratio" is, so I looked that up on the World Bank website, and they explain that it is a "% of working-age population." Seoul is doing greater than top 2~8 cities, but lower-ranked cities like Dubai, Doha, and Abu Dhabi seem to be doing well in demographics as well. So I guess this is not really a reliable indicator to solely measure social sustainability. 2. Education The second indicator is education, which I had been through for 20 years in Seoul. Education is obviously the one Seoul is doing well compared to other cities. However, as a person to have always blamed Korean education system for a major factor to ruin my critical thinking, I did not want to agree with that. So, what are the indicators to measure education index? Literacy rate, university rankings, and share of population with tertiary education. As I expected, they are just numbers that merely show the results. Literacy rate? yes, almost every people in Seoul can read and write, no doubt. University rankings? there are several universities in Korea that go into the top 100 worldwide. Share of population with tertiary education? Korea is the number one country to have those who completed the highest level of education. But, What about the quality of education? what about the happiness of students? As from my experience, education in Korea was just to make students to get into a good college, and for the most part it was just for taking an exam including Sooneung (Korean SAT). I was so frustrated when I heard a news that my brother's middle school friend committed suicide blaming himself for bad scores he got from an exam. This happens every year in every region of the country especially after Sooneung. I went through the same education system which made me feel like a failure after I didn't make it to a good college. I might have been so naive at the time, but I literally thought that I would be able to live a successful life if I get into a top college. But eventually, I failed, which means that there is no successful life for me. (No wonder I felt like a living failure) Last spring, I did a research called "Comparison of Korean and American Students’ Aspirations, Attitudes and Educational Experiences" which came out of my curiosity while figuring out why I don't have a dream. *I'm planning to post it here on my blog later. I chose this issue because I've noticed the difference between Koreans and Americans when I talked about dreams. Most of my American friends have dreams although it is something that seems a little impossible, while many of my Korean friends as well as myself don't know what they want to do after graduation or are hesitant to talk about that. I wanted to blame Korean education system for being an obstruction to find my way and hoped that this can be an evidence to prove me. To briefly mention about the outcomes, a lot more Koreans than I thought knew what they want to do. I will explain in detail about my findings in later postings. Okay, I've gone a little off topic. Anyway, what I'm trying to say is that the indicators of education didn't measure the true quality of the city's education. Here is a documentary about a top student in a Korean middle school who struggles with competing with other top students when she move on to a specialized high school. [youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cLVugRBot1c] She is only 15. Is a 15-year-old supposed to be constantly worried about her future and stuck in her studying plan for more than 10 hours a day? Well, it depends on what you think, but I don't think that's a good image of a middle schooler.. In the next posting, I'll cover income inequality as a sub-index to measure social sustainability. +If you want to see the full article and report on National Geographic, click here: http://www.nationalgeographic.com/environment/urban-expeditions/green-buildings/sustainable-cities-graphic-urban-expeditions/#.WYop1ftWFaA.email |

| body | Recently, I saw an interesting news saying Seoul was ranked as the number one city of the world in people section in a National Geographic's research in 2016. "body": "Recently, I saw an interesting news saying Seoul was ranked as the number one city of the world in people section in a National Geographic's research in 2016.\n\nAs a previous Seouler (a resident of Seoul) and now as a New Yorker, I was like, 'How is that even possible? All I've heard and seen while living in Seoul is something bad for people like heavy education for teenagers, too much competition for job seekers, and people working extremely long hours and getting paid too little. Plus, 2016 was even before the crazy president was impeached.'\n\nI remember when I was in Korea in 2012, I was getting minimum wage which was ₩4,850 (around $4.50) per hour for working at Dunkin Donut's, and I even saw my friend who was working as a staff at a hair salon getting way lower than the minimum wage while working freaking long hours. I know this is still happening although the minimum wage has been raised to $6 per hour (which is still too low in my opinion) this year.\n\nSo, with so much doubts about this research, I decided to look in detail, like how it has been done and what indicators they used to measure the sustainability of each country.\n\n\n\n\nAs you can see, Seoul is really the number one city that has even beat European cities. How did this happen?\n\n1. Demographics\n\nLet's look at the first indicator, demographics (red box). According to Arcadis (a research company that conducted this research), dependency ratio metered by World Bank is the only one to measure demographics. I didn't know what \"dependency ratio\" is, so I looked that up on the World Bank website, and they explain that it is a \"% of working-age population.\"\n\nSeoul is doing greater than top 2~8 cities, but lower-ranked cities like Dubai, Doha, and Abu Dhabi seem to be doing well in demographics as well. So I guess this is not really a reliable indicator to solely measure social sustainability.\n\n2. Education\n\nThe second indicator is education, which I had been through for 20 years in Seoul. Education is obviously the one Seoul is doing well compared to other cities. However, as a person to have always blamed Korean education system for a major factor to ruin my critical thinking, I did not want to agree with that.\n\nSo, what are the indicators to measure education index? Literacy rate, university rankings, and share of population with tertiary education.\n\nAs I expected, they are just numbers that merely show the results. Literacy rate? yes, almost every people in Seoul can read and write, no doubt. University rankings? there are several universities in Korea that go into the top 100 worldwide. Share of population with tertiary education? Korea is the number one country to have those who completed the highest level of education.\n\nBut, What about the quality of education? what about the happiness of students? As from my experience, education in Korea was just to make students to get into a good college, and for the most part it was just for taking an exam including Sooneung (Korean SAT).\n\nI was so frustrated when I heard a news that my brother's middle school friend committed suicide blaming himself for bad scores he got from an exam. This happens every year in every region of the country especially after Sooneung.\n\nI went through the same education system which made me feel like a failure after I didn't make it to a good college. I might have been so naive at the time, but I literally thought that I would be able to live a successful life if I get into a top college. But eventually, I failed, which means that there is no successful life for me. (No wonder I felt like a living failure)\n\nLast spring, I did a research called \"Comparison of Korean and American Students’ Aspirations, Attitudes and Educational Experiences\" which came out of my curiosity while figuring out why I don't have a dream. *I'm planning to post it here on my blog later.\n\nI chose this issue because I've noticed the difference between Koreans and Americans when I talked about dreams. Most of my American friends have dreams although it is something that seems a little impossible, while many of my Korean friends as well as myself don't know what they want to do after graduation or are hesitant to talk about that.\n\nI wanted to blame Korean education system for being an obstruction to find my way and hoped that this can be an evidence to prove me. To briefly mention about the outcomes, a lot more Koreans than I thought knew what they want to do. I will explain in detail about my findings in later postings.\n\nOkay, I've gone a little off topic. Anyway, what I'm trying to say is that the indicators of education didn't measure the true quality of the city's education. Here is a documentary about a top student in a Korean middle school who struggles with competing with other top students when she move on to a specialized high school.\n\n[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cLVugRBot1c]\n\nShe is only 15. Is a 15-year-old supposed to be constantly worried about her future and stuck in her studying plan for more than 10 hours a day? Well, it depends on what you think, but I don't think that's a good image of a middle schooler..\n\nIn the next posting, I'll cover income inequality as a sub-index to measure social sustainability.\n\n\n\n+If you want to see the full article and report on National Geographic, click here:\n\nhttp://www.nationalgeographic.com/environment/urban-expeditions/green-buildings/sustainable-cities-graphic-urban-expeditions/#.WYop1ftWFaA.email",

| body | From my experience, things you can buy at grocery stores like fruits, vegetables, and meats are way cheaper in NY. Korean people even say that it is cheaper to eat out than to cook at home because of the high price at groceries. So, it is not always true that you can buy things for cheaper in Seoul than NY. Korean sales tax is 10% compared to NY sales tax 8.875%. What I like about buying stuffs in Korea is that tax is already included in the price you see, while here in NY you'll have to pay more with the tax calculated at the cashier. However, my point is not to compare Seoul to NY. I just wanted to point out that if you actually see the reality of people in Seoul about minimum wage and working environment, it would be hard to agree that Seoul is the top city of the world for social sustainability. |

Well, it depends on what you think, but I don't think that's a good image of a middle schooler..\n\nThere is a lot more things I want to mention about education in Korea, but since it is 4AM, I need to go to bed. I'm planning to talk about that in later postings regarding my research.\n\nIn the next posting, I'll cover income inequality as a sub-index to measure social sustainability.\n\n\n\n+If you want to see the full article and report on National Geographic, click here:\n\nhttp://www.nationalgeographic.com/environment/urban-expeditions/green-buildings/sustainable-cities-graphic-urban-expeditions/#.WYop1ftWFaA.email",
