It’s called ether, it runs on a network called Ethereum, and less than one year after launching, its market cap now exceeds $1 billion.\n\nOn Thursday, Ethereum hit another business milestone when Coinbase, the leading mainstream platform for buying and trading of bitcoin, added support for ether. Coinbase customers—there are 4 million of them in 32 countries—can now easily buy and trade ether using the Coinbase web site or mobile app.\n\nBut would they want to? First they’d have to understand it.\n\nIf bitcoin, which runs on a decentralized, permission-less, peer-to-peer blockchain, is still in its infancy—a point bitcoin believers love to make—then Ethereum is barely out of the womb. As the New York Times wrote in March, the network “is complicated enough that even people who know it well have trouble describing it in plain English.”\n\nEthereum’s creator is Vitalik Buterin, a 22-year-old Russian tech-wunderkind who began working on the concept at age 19. A presentation Buterin made at Ethereum’s developer conference last year listed use cases such as: issuing assets; crowdfunding; domain registration; title registration; gambling; prediction markets; and the Internet of Things, among others.\n\nEthereum is not without troubling security issues: Last month the decentralized network DAO was attacked, in a theft of $50 million worth of ether. After the attack, an SEC official expressed grave concern over the network’s security.\n\nStill, many in the cryptocurrency world say ether is even more exciting than bitcoin because of its potential for storing smart contracts on the Ethereum network. Many developers are already running early-stage apps on top of Ethereum, for all manner of services including blockchain payments via Slack and placing bets on which tech startups will get popular first.\n\nCoinbase had already added ether to its more formal cryptocurrency exchange site for institutional investors, GDAX, back in May. “We saw individual as well as developer interest in Ethereum rise at the end of 2015, and by the early part of 2016 our customers on GDAX were saying, ‘Give us the ability to sell ether,‘” says Adam White, VP of business development and strategy for Coinbase. Bringing ether to the mainstream product was the obvious next step.\n\nCoinbase adding ether also means that all partners using the Coinbase “buy widget” can do the same. One such partner is Lawnmower, a mobile app that originally launched as a “roundup” service that invests your spare change into bitcoin, using Coinbase.\n\nLawnmower recently changed its model to allow users to set an auto-purchase of bitcoin once a month at a set price, and it just updated its app this week to include a news hub for intel on many cryptocurrencies, including ether, litecoin, and ripple. In other words: Lawnmower, like Coinbase, saw ether pulling into second in the crypto race.\n\n“Some of these assets recently, like ether, our users have made it clear they want to learn more about it,” says Alex Sunnarborg, Lawnmower CFO. “So we just said, ‘Let’s move as fast as we can on it.'” Lawnmower added an index that shows ether’s price over time, compares it against bitcoin, and even has the full original white paper on Ethereum. What it couldn’t add was the ability to actually buy ether. Now that Coinbase has implemented that, it can.\n\nAll of the momentum for ether reflects that bitcoin will not be the only digital currency of interest. It was the first to come along, in 2009, but there is room for more. And indeed, there were more—like dogecoin, litecoin (whose inventor now works for Coinbase), and ripple—but White says, “Nothing uniquely differentiated itself until Ethereum. While bitcoin is a fantastic global transaction network, we see Ethereum offering a worldwide computational network.”\n\nCoinbase was the first bitcoin wallet to get mainstream recognition. It was also by far the best-funded bitcoin startup until the mysterious 21 Inc. raised $116 million in a single round last year. Adding Ethereum to Coinbase, White says, “required a fresh look at how we design the platform. We wanted to keep it super simple, easy to understand, so that people like my dad, when they hear about Ethereum in the paper, and he wants to buy $100, he can go to Coinbase and it’s still a very simple process.”\n\nIf the casual investor does want to dip a toe into ether, Coinbase now allows it through a bank account, credit or debit card. Ether currently trades at around $12. Coinbase expects to see “a very significant amount of interest.”",

It’s called ether, it runs on a network called Ethereum, and less than one year after launching, its market cap now exceeds $1 billion.\n\nOn Thursday, Ethereum hit another business milestone when Coinbase, the leading mainstream platform for buying and trading of bitcoin, added support for ether. Coinbase customers—there are 4 million of them in 32 countries—can now easily buy and trade ether using the Coinbase web site or mobile app.\n\nBut would they want to? First they’d have to understand it.\n\nIf bitcoin, which runs on a decentralized, permission-less, peer-to-peer blockchain, is still in its infancy—a point bitcoin believers love to make—then Ethereum is barely out of the womb. As the New York Times wrote in March, the network “is complicated enough that even people who know it well have trouble describing it in plain English.”\n\nEthereum’s creator is Vitalik Buterin, a 22-year-old Russian tech-wunderkind who began working on the concept at age 19. A presentation Buterin made at Ethereum’s developer conference last year listed use cases such as: issuing assets; crowdfunding; domain registration; title registration; gambling; prediction markets; and the Internet of Things, among others.\n\nEthereum is not without troubling security issues: Last month the decentralized network DAO was attacked, in a theft of $50 million worth of ether. After the attack, an SEC official expressed grave concern over the network’s security.\n\nStill, many in the cryptocurrency world say ether is even more exciting than bitcoin because of its potential for storing smart contracts on the Ethereum network. Many developers are already running early-stage apps on top of Ethereum, for all manner of services including blockchain payments via Slack and placing bets on which tech startups will get popular first.\n\nCoinbase had already added ether to its more formal cryptocurrency exchange site for institutional investors, GDAX, back in May. “We saw individual as well as developer interest in Ethereum rise at the end of 2015, and by the early part of 2016 our customers on GDAX were saying, ‘Give us the ability to sell ether,‘” says Adam White, VP of business development and strategy for Coinbase. The AML Proposal, which would add virtual currency exchanges and custodial wallet providers to the existing AML framework, to “ensure increased transparency of financial transactions and of corporate entities,” requires exchanges and wallet providers to collect and monitor personal customer information as well as report suspicious transactions. The AML Proposal is open for commentary from Member States until the European Parliament and European Council meet to discuss the draft as early as this month.  The AML Proposal, subject to comments, is due to be enacted as a new Directive in January 2017, after which Member States would be required to follow with individualized laws aligned with the final Directive.\n\nFor some exchanges and wallet providers, these new rules will not be too burdensome because they have already been collecting the information set forth in the AML Proposal.  However the somewhat vague scope of the proposal has left some wallet providers unsure of whether they would be bound by the regulations. The AML Proposal applies to “[w]allet providers offering custodial services of credentials necessary to access virtual currencies.”  Some providers, such as those who offer software wallets, do not hold keys for customers, while others, known as multisig wallet providers, require multiple signatures/keys in order for a customer to access a particular wallet. These types of wallet providers would need additional information from a customer in order to divulge information about their transactions in response to a request made by a third party. Those considering the implications of such regulations have expressed conflicting opinions about whether these kinds of wallet providers fall within the scope of the AML Proposal. Some think multisig keyholders are likely included in the scope of the AML Proposal:\nOthers, however, believe that software and multisig wallets would be excluded under the AML Proposal because they do not hold the entire key necessary to disclose personal information for any of their customers’ wallets:\n\nIt should mean that service providers who do not hold keys for customers (like software wallets) or services providers who do hold keys but not enough to access a balance (like multisig wallet services) would be exempt.\nIn an effort to counter the potential sweeping inclusion of all wallets in the AML Proposal, Jouke Hofman, CEO of Bitcoin-brokerage Bitonic and exchange BL3P, initiated outreach to the Dutch Ministry of Finance, and other virtual currency wallet and exchange companies, to explain the need for more specific guidance on who exactly is covered by the directive and the importance of balancing anti-terrorism AML efforts with technological innovation:\n\nUnder the current provision, it's not that clear who or what the regulation applies to, exactly. It covers wallet providers that hold onto private keys of their users. But does it also include wallet providers that hold onto one key for a two-of-three multisig address? What if bitcoins are time-locked and wallet providers cannot spend the funds now, but perhaps in the future? And if the regulation applies to any key holder, where does the definition of a wallet provider begin? It's important these types of nuances are taken into account when drafting new regulation for an upcoming technology that's still very much in development.\nSignificant privacy and access concerns will exist if the AML Proposal is ultimately deemed to include multisig wallets or other wallets that require collecting personal data from the customer for the purpose of having a database readily accessible to the government. According to the directive, covered entities would be required to collect personal information from its customers, store it in a database, and report suspicious activities. The data would have to be easily accessible should the government require it for any purpose. What is most concerning is that there is no standard of proof that the government must provide in order to gain access to the customers’ personal information in the database.\n\nThe AML Proposal recognizes the importance of individual privacy rights by only requiring wallet providers to store “minimum data necessary to the performance of AML investigations” and by stating that the data collected should be essentially the same as the “set of data to be made available to the public [that is] limited, clearly and exhaustively defined, and should be of a general nature, so as to minimize the potential prejudice to the beneficial owners.” However, the mere recognition of these privacy considerations does not resolve the primary issue of government access to private information without first having to prove the need for it. In order to better balance individual privacy with the government’s interest in monitoring illegal activities, any regulation should include a standard of proof, such as probable cause or reasonable suspicion, before the wallet provider is required to give the government access to its customers’ data.\n\nAnother concern with the AML Proposal is the ability for individual wallet providers to comply with comprehensive compilation and reporting requirements. Corné Plooy, a developer with Amiko Pay, expressed his concern that stifling growth and innovation during a time of significant advancement for blockchain and virtual currency technology could disincentivize wallet providers from operating within Europe without accomplishing the goal of uncovering illegal activity:\n\nA major difference between financial technology and other information technology like software or websites is that financial technology usually cannot be deployed without approval of existing parties like banks. I believe this is what stops the financial sector from having the same level of innovation as other IT-sectors. This is where Bitcoin makes a huge difference. It allows for a peer-to-peer economy, without dependence on large organizations. There is no longer a strong separation between the role of a consumer and that of a service provider. Anyone with a good idea and a bit of expertise can make their idea a reality, giving a huge boost to fintech innovation. Regulation may destroy that advantage. What would have become of Google if it had to perform a suspicious activities check on every website it linked to? What will happen if every user has to comply with AML/KYC regulations? That is a real concern if multisig key holders are considered wallet providers in the newly proposed E.U. regulations. Privacy concerns aside, individuals don't have the resources to apply these sorts of checks.\nAs with other attempts to regulate various aspects of virtual currencies though licenses and restrictions, to avoid stifling growth, any AML regulation adopted by the EU must achieve a balance between consumer/government protection, continued innovation, and privacy concerns. The AML Proposal is a good framework for achieving this balance.  However, the proposal needs to be narrowed in scope as to the wallet providers it covers and it must provide some burden of proof for a government to access private customer data, if it is going to fairly accomplish necessary AML goals without impinging on privacy rights and innovation any more than that which is necessary.  Hopefully, the virtual currency businesses that are impacted by the AML Proposal will provide the necessary comments that will cause the EU to implement these necessary changes to the proposal.",

Better participation – content, comments, actions that other people react to more – is rewarded with more digital currency. It’s like Reddit, where people get paid.But the mechanics are quite complex. Three kinds of digital assets. Debt-to-ownership ratios. Witnesses. Liquidity providers. Powering up and powering down. There are countless Steem articles either suggesting ways to explain the system or requesting them from others, and new ones appear all the time. This article attempts to summarize, though it will leave some of the technical details for another post.**</p>\n<h3><strong>Unique Features</strong></h3>\n<p>To accomplish its goal of a decentralized social media platform that rewards its users, Steem.it has several unique features.<strong>Three internal currencies: STEEM, Steem Power, and Steem Dollars</strong><br>\nSteem.it uses three currencies to power its network: STEEM, Steem Power, and Steem Dollars,STEEM is the basic currency unit of the Steem ecosystem – everything is valued in STEEM and it must first be acquired to enter or exit the steam network. It is traded on exchanges.In order to be active on the platform, users must convert STEEM to Steem Power. This conversion ‘locks’ their STEEM – it’s not burned, just inaccessible while it’s being used as Steem Power. This is referred to as ‘powering up.’ The rate of conversion changes and can be found <a href=\"https://steemd.com/\">here</a> as steem_per_mvest on the right.Users can’t immediately convert Steem Power back to STEEM: they must submit their SP and receive weekly installments of STEEM over two years, similar to bond payments. This is referred to as ‘powering down.’Steem Dollars are another token in the ecosystem. One Steem Dollar is redeemable for $1 worth of Steem at current market prices (.3 STEEM at time of writing). One can convert Steem Dollars to Steem within the Steem platform and then sell the Steem for a fiat currency on an exchange. The actual trade is delayed by one week: initiating the conversion means the Steem Dollar will become STEEM at the market price in exactly one week.The blockchain issues these currencies in the form of payouts and broader inflation. The total supply of STEEM (including that locked up as Steem Power) doubles every year through reward payments on the platform and as payments to holders of Steem Power (those who have ‘powered up’). 10% of the doubling goes to reward creators and curators; 90% goes to holders of Steem Power in proportion to the amount of Steem Power they inidividually hold. Steem Dollars are also given out as reward payments.Here is a brief primer summarizing key aspects of the currencies.<strong>Witnesses as Block Producers</strong>The consensus protocol is also quite complicated. At a high-level, it resembles a delegated proof of stake, with those who hold the most Steem Power electing most of the transaction validators, called Witnesses. Every block, 21 witnesses validate transaction blocks in sequence: a block validated by one witness passes to the next in a pre-determined route through the 21 witnesses. 19 of these witnesses elected, 1 comes from the group of miners who produce the cryptographic hashes for the blockchain, and 1 comes from a pool of Steem Power holders. All witnesses are usually known in advance, because the top 19 shouldn’t change frequently and the miner and SP holder are drawn from a queue. Each validator has three seconds to validate the block, meaning a total block confirmation time of 21 seconds.<strong>Rate Setting instead of Transaction Fees</strong>Instead of implementing transaction fees for being active on the network, each user is allowed a certain amount of activity on the network, calculated as a portion of the available block size space. Steem calls this bandwidth, and the limit is a moving average of weekly activity. If a user exceeds their limit, their transactions are delayed. Calculating how this translates into an actual number of transactions is complicated, but the point is that one’s allowed free undelayed activity on the network is proportional to their Steem Power holdings.</p>\n<h3><strong>History/Founding</strong></h3>\n<p>Steem.it was founded by Dan Larimer and Ned Scott. CTO Dan Larimer co-founded Bitshares and BitUSD. In his <a href=\"https://steemit.com/introduceyourself/@dantheman/daniel-larimer--co-founder-of-bitshares-steemit\">Steem.it autobiography</a>, he explained that he founded Steem.it as an economic system and a community that expresses the basic premise “everyone who brings value deserves a share.” CEO Ned Scott met Dan through the Bitshares project, and after meeting in person, they decided to launch a blockchain project focused on community.
