All their work is going to be destroyed. When the priest says \"Jesus is ressurected\", they will put fire on the woods they have gathered and what took them weeks to create will be burnt.\n\nThis year, their creation was particularly impressive. A tow truck helped them make the gallows. Its height was more than 8 metres. \"In the old times, we used to make them even bigger\", an older man said to me. \"We used to make them twice as high\", he said in front of the amazed eyes of his son.\n\nIt is an old tradition here in Souda to create spectacular effigies of Judas, as is the easter custom in Greece. It brings together the youth of the town, it connects different generations. They all have a story to say, of the Judas they made when they were young.\n\nAnd when it all ends and everyone else has left, those young people who spent weeks to create something that its purpose was to be destroyed in a matter of minutes, they don't go back to their homes, they stay there around the fire that slowly fades away.\n\nThey cook meat and drink wine, they share their stories with laughter, like warriors who have just won a battle, they celebrate their success and they renew their meeting for the next year, with a promise that the burning of traitor Judas will be even more spectacular.\n\nThough not an official part of the Easter liturgical cycle, the custom is typically a part of the reenactment of the story of the Passion that is practiced by the faithful during Easter. All their work is going to be destroyed. When the priest says \"Jesus is ressurected\", they will put fire on the woods they have gathered and what took them weeks to create will be burnt.\n\nThis year, their creation was particularly impressive. A tow truck helped them make the gallows. Its height was more than 8 metres. \"In the old times, we used to make them even bigger\", an older man said to me. \"We used to make them twice as high\", he said in front of the amazed eyes of his son. \n\nIt is an old tradition here in Souda to create spectacular effigies of Judas, as is the easter custom in Greece. It brings together the youth of the town, it connects different generations. They all have a story to say, of the Judas they made when they were young.\n\nAnd when it all ends and everyone else has left, those young people who spent weeks to create something that its purpose was to be destroyed in a matter of minutes, they don't go back to their homes, they stay there around the fire that slowly fades away. \n\nThey cook meat and drink wine, they share their stories with laughter, like warriors who have just won a battle, they celebrate their success and they renew their meeting for the next year, with a promise that the burning of traitor Judas will be even more spectacular.\n\nThough not an official part of the Easter liturgical cycle, the custom is typically a part of the reenactment of the story of the Passion that is practiced by the faithful during Easter. All their work is going to be destroyed. When the priest says \"Jesus is ressurected\", they will put fire on the woods they have gathered and what took them weeks to create will be burnt.\n\nThis year, their creation was particularly impressive. A tow truck helped them make the gallows. Its height was more than 8 metres. \"In the old times, we used to make them even bigger\", an older man said to me. \"We used to make them twice as high\", he said in front of the amazed eyes of his son. \n\nIt is an old tradition here in Souda to create spectacular effigies of Judas, as is the easter custom in Greece. It brings together the youth of the town, it connects different generations. In Greece, about 40.000 people live on the streets. There are more than 3.000.000 stray dogs. Some say that the numbers are even greater. Even in Chania, a small touristic town in Crete, the problem is severe with more than 100 people having no shelter to sleep.\n\nThis photo was taken on the 15th of October of 2015 in Chania, at Kotzampasi Plaza. A homeless man and a stray dog coexist on the streets, they share the same pavement.They sleep opposite each other, as if to mirror their deserted nature.\n\nThey are the rejected. My name is Giannis Angelakis and I am a photojournalist and street photographer from the island of Crete in Greece. \n\nAs long as I remember myself I had something to do with the process of news making. \n\nAs a child, I spent many hours every day at the newspaper that my father worked, looking at all those busy people come and go, always loud and excited about something new that happened. \n\nAs a teenager, I felt that there was magic in the process of developing a film into photographs. Inside the “dark room” used by the journalists of the newspaper, I learnt that every photo counts.\n\nNow, years have passed. I am still young but I am a grown up man. I am a journalist, like my father was. \n\nThe excitement of my youth remains intact. What remains intact is the importance that stories have. The people that give meaning to our daily lives, that make news, for good or for bad. The memories they create. \n\nMy job is to document these stories.
