| title | WHEN THE ENEMY IS SITTING RIGHT NEXT TO YOU |
| body | The SIGNS that the Enemy is before you! "...I can't get anything done without you..." "...you know you're my right hand..." "...my better half..." "...don't tell me tell my right hand if you want to get it done..." You love your job but you don't seem to be getting advancement opportunities as readily as others...so what do you do. First you have to recognize the signs. Some businesses are not meant for growth they are meant for you to get experience and move on. Others are less strategic and don't think about career planning for their employees. Yet others are too small or don't have turn over the creates opportunities. For the ones that are left, how do you identify the signs that you are being ignored? 1. Lots a complements but neither your salary nor title has changed for more than 2 years. 2. Your reviews don't include a next step in your career. They actually never talk about your development as an employee or your career. 3. You never get to present your ideas to the executive level management, its always being done for you. They take all your time and don't let you work with other teams or on projects outside of their involvement. 4. Body language changes when you are around influential people. They verbally shut-down conversations. 5. They conveniently leave out key information, and are always explaining why they didn't include you in a process. And somehow your idea has become their idea. FIX THE PROBLEM 1. Begin to network with managers outside your group, company events, water cooler chats, coffee breaks, elevator rides. Anyplace you can connect 2. Make a friend in HR. Tactically point out to them you are looking for growth and you see your self contributing in specific ways. Remind them of your skill set and how much you've learned, so they remember when you are not around to keep you name at the top of their mind for the next opportunity. 3. Create an ally. Get to know leadership, executives and/or your bosses boss. If a project you worked on went really well, make it a point to see the VIP connected with the project, mention how excited you were to work on the project, your contribution and the result. It's important to be succinct in these conversations. Final note, managers who pretend they have your best interest at heart are insecure and see you as more competent than they are and want to stop you from taking their job. It's important not to get frustrated; remain positive; let your work speak for you; be consistent; and if you aren't getting anywhere write the resume and change jobs. I'd love to hear your thoughts, comments, questions: [email protected] |

| title | JOB BOARDS AND HOW TO USE THEM |
| body | There are basically two types of job boards: a Job Board used as a third party by a Company or Organization This type of Job Board is hired directly by a company to find post their jobs online to a large number of candidates. They goal is to reach more people then the ones that go to the company sites career page. They usually post jobs on a Job Board as a secondary measure to finding talent. an Aggregate Job Board uses technology to seeks all relevant jobs online and post them in one place. The technology enables the Aggregate to link to jobs on other job boards, corporate websites, and postings. This helps the job seeker have a centralized location for their job search and keep their information organized in one place. The Aggregate can be helpful but you may also experience lag-time. Sometimes they get the job days or weeks later than the initial posting. Further explanations and types of Job Boards 1. There is the Professional/Trade Associations and Organizations Job Board. They are industry specific and members use as a networking resource to find candidates. Usually they have fewer postings but they are more likely to be viewed by hiring managers. This is a great resource and I highly recommend joining one that supports your career goals. 2. There is the Recruitment Agency Job Board. A company has hired a specific recruitment agency to find talent for them. The agencies tend to work with a variety of industries; have diverse types of companies; and various employment opportunities. 3. There is the Company Job Board which will only list their jobs. Large companies and growing companies will ask you to register on a company board. They often have the option for you to receive updates about open positions. Make sure to register and allow notifications if you are truly interested. 4. There are Social Networks like FaceBook, Twitter, Instagram companies have pages where they post jobs or special interest groups have members that post open positions. 5. There are the Special Interest Job Boards like AfterCollege, IvyExec, eFinancial Careers. These are great for targeted searches and can be classified as traditional job boards or aggregates. 6. There is the Traditional Job Board which a company hires to find talent and specifically lists their current open positions. Glassdoor, Indeed, LinkedIn, are all examples. 7. There is the Aggregate Job Board. These sites search the web for jobs and put them on their platform. They allow you to search multiple boards from one site Simply Hired, ZipRecruiter, Nexxt. Remember pick the job board that fits where you are in your career search, career criteria, industry, years of experience, type of role, skill set. Let me know how your search is going, and ask me questions to help you get the job you want at [email protected]. |

| title | "WHAT THE HECK, I JUST HAD THE WORST INTERVIEW" ...HOW TO RECOVER FROM A BAD INTERVIEW |
| body | Well that interview just didn't seem to go as you expected. The interviewer didn't seem to like you, you didn't answer questions properly or know how to answer a question, you were late, you got the interviewers name wrong, you made an inappropriate comment....the list goes on. To get back on track is simpler than you think. First, take a moment to breathe. You are frustrated and stressed about the interview. It's going to take a few minutes - an hour even - to let go of the emotions. Remember to reflect on the experience, and not to beat yourself up. Second, learn from the mistakes you made. Preparation is usually the best way to correct most interview mistakes. Take an hour to review before any interview. It gives you a foundation of information to pull from when conversing in the interview. If the mistake was personality, skills or lack of interest than the best way to recover is the thank you letter. Third, correct the mistake. The Thank You Letter (TYL) is one of the best ways to correct any errors in the interview...in some cases it's a second chance. The TYL is an acknowledgement of what occurred in the interview, gives an explanation for the interview flub, reiterates why you are the right hire for the role and asks for the opportunity to meet again. If you really feel strongly this was the job for you, ask for a second interview. Write a compelling letter stating your case. The letter should start with an apology if one is needed, acknowledge the circumstances of the interview, offer an explanation, a reason why you should be given a second interview based on skills, experience and knowledge, and proof* you are an ideal fit and why it's not a waste of time for the organization to interview you again. *Important note about proof. Proof works when it uses information taken from the interview. 1. Giving an example of how you would solve a problem that the interviewer outlined in the interview 2. Based on the interview you highlight experiences, references, knowledge, skills that make you the right fit 3. Make promises you can keep SAMPLE LETTER Dear Manager, Thank you for meeting with me yesterday. I appreciated hearing your insights about the XYZ Company. After hearing the corporate goals and direction, I think that my professional experience combined with my academic achievements could make me an ideal fit for the position or (insert title). After going over our conversation, I must apologize for [name the problem] 1. not appearing enthusiastic 2. clearly outlining my experience in concise and clear way 3. being awkward and fumbling in my response [give a reason]I am usually more engaging and graceful in presentation. I didn't want to appear over the top when we spoke and opted to be more reserved in our conversation. If you didn't notice my lack [you can add an adverb or reiterate reason above in one word, it's optional], then please accept letter as an example of my diligence, motivation, and aptitude. I am a responsible, [list a skill here] with experience [list here] that will deliver on the promise of being an exceptional employee. If you have the time, I would opportunity to meet with you again to clear up any concerns. In addition, my references are available for you to contact for any additional insights. Thank you again for the chance to interview with you and XYZ Company. I look forward to hearing from you Pick a closing: Respectfully, Sincerely, Regards, |

| title | Why Doesn't My Resume Get Noticed?!... |
| body | I’ve read thousands of resumes. I’ve read hundreds of articles about why resumes don’t get noticed. I’ve even sent my fair share of resumes into the job board abyss. I've talked to recruiters for years about what they look for in resumes and why some stand out and some don't. I noticed pretty early on that when you're inundated with resumes you start to gloss over pretty quickly. After all the research the answer became simple - pay attention to the details. The next question became which details. So here's a quick list of reasons your resume may be getting rejected: 1. Your resume doesn’t match the job description. Stop applying for jobs that just don’t suit your skills or experience. Or re- write your resume to match the job description. Highlight the skills in your experience that match what the job description is asking for in a candidate. 2. The skills they are looking for aren't clearly stated in your resume. Recruiters want to see early on that you have the right skills, companies or experience for their company. 3. Typos on your resume - careless mistakes like not spelling company name correctly, grammar errors, inconsistent punctuation instantly get you resume out in the reject pile. 4. Resume isn’t well written. With so many resumes submitted per job recruiters are overwhelmed. Resumes that stand out have a combination of qualities: they get to the point in the first half of the resume, they are an engaging read, highlights achievements, results and benefits of hiring you. 5. The job doesn’t exist. Many companies have policies that a job has to be publicly posted even if they already have an internal or referral candidate in mind. This one is beyond your control so don't worry about it. Hope this helps - let's talk more about how to get your resume noticed. I love questions - I answer all of them. |

| title | It's Really Frustrating to Deal With Certain People at Work...Quick Tips to Help |
| body | I often get into conversations with peers about how frustrating it can be to deal with certain people in their office. Putting it nicely, I myself have on occasion been frustrated by others - they just make my skin crawl. Honestly, I've also been the one frustrating others. So here is a few tips that I hope helps get you through the day ;-) First, ask a question. Often times what you perceive as the problem is just a different perspective on the situation. There could be information you didn't have or circumstances that aren't obvious. Second, don't make assumptions. There is more then one way to get the job done. Third, trying rephrasing. Repetition is not re-phrasing. Use different words to explain the same thing. It's true, sometimes people are not using the same definitions as you are and that causes mis-communication. Fourth, adapt a solution they are offering. This is a case of paying it forward. Next time you might find they are more adaptable, even helpful and if you are lucky, will utilize your method versus trying to recreate the wheel. Fifth, make sure you are on point and not trying to be right. Sometimes we don't realize we are actually the source of frustration because we prefer to be right over accepting a new way to get an old job done. I love opinions, and discourse..let me know your thoughts - I'll always answer. How do you deal with frustrating co-workers? What solutions have you employed? |

| title | Checklist for Leaders Looking to Move Up the Corporate Ladder |
| body | Moving into Upper Management at your present company or a new one requires you to think like one. Here’s a list that will help you make that leap upper management. 1. “Think Like You Are In Charge” – develop your ability to see the big picture. You need to understand all the elements that make the business work – development of core competency, financial and budget responsibility, staff, goal setting and planning. 2. “Make Friends” – get to know the right people who make decisions. Introduce yourself, find a way to connect. It could be over a project at work, philanthropic endeavor, or a hobby. Most importantly, however you connect, it should be something you are really interested, authenticity counts. 3. “Practice Decision Making” – practice to get yourself in the leader mindset. Volunteer to take over projects, create projects that will help the business goals – pitch them and get them approved. Projects with financial responsibility are the best. Take charge when you can, and deliver on your promise. 4. “Presence Matters” – make sure you look, walk and talk like the person in charge. Take time to invest in your appearance, how you communicate, and body language. You need to look like can run the meeting, create buy-in and make good decisions for the team and the business. You need to be an effective speaker. 5. “Coaching” – invest in a coach. Ask others in leadership roles for referrals, network within professional associations to find a good one. The best coaches help you build on your strengths and compensate for your weaknesses. Also, don’t be afraid to change coaches as needed. 6. “Coaching, 2” – learn to be a coach. As a manager, you already do this day to day, per situation. To move up you need to know how to nurture the business as well as the people. Success is built on the strength of our teams – you need to know how to manage great people to create great success. 7. “Objectivity” – maintain your objectivity. You need to practice business objectivity, regardless of opinion, what’s the best for the business…this is where the hard decisions are made like hiring and firing. 8. “Continue to Learn and Grow” – invest in reading and keeping yourself educated. Online courses, books, seminars, conferences, trade publications, trend reports, the list is long. Keep up. 9. “Risks” – step out of the comfort zone. Every good manager takes a risk to ensure continued success of the business. Risks are based on timing, experience, education, and business acumen. 10. “Listen” – keep your ears open, your eyes peeled, your mouth shut. There are times when you need to be in the audience so you can master the room. Keep in mind this list becomes second nature as you change your thinking and habits. And, it sustains you once you are in the BIG chair. |

"body": "Moving into Upper Management at your present company or a new one requires you to think like one. Here’s a list that will help you make that leap upper management.\n\n1.\t“Think Like You Are In Charge” – develop your ability to see the big picture. You need to understand all the elements that make the business work – development of core competency, financial and budget responsibility, staff, goal setting and planning.\n2.\t “Make Friends” – get to know the right people who make decisions. Introduce yourself, find a way to connect. It could be over a project at work, philanthropic endeavor, or a hobby. Most importantly, however you connect, it should be something you are really interested, authenticity counts.\n3.\t “Practice Decision Making” – practice to get yourself in the leader mindset. Volunteer to take over projects, create projects that will help the business goals – pitch them and get them approved. Projects with financial responsibility are the best. Take charge when you can, and deliver on your promise.\n4.\t“Presence Matters” – make sure you look, walk and talk like the person in charge. Take time to invest in your appearance, how you communicate, and body language. You need to look like can run the meeting, create buy-in and make good decisions for the team and the business. You need to be an effective speaker.\n5.\t“Coaching” – invest in a coach. Ask others in leadership roles for referrals, network within professional associations to find a good one. The best coaches help you build on your strengths and compensate for your weaknesses. Also, don’t be afraid to change coaches as needed.\n6.\t“Coaching, 2” – learn to be a coach. As a manager, you already do this day to day, per situation. To move up you need to know how to nurture the business as well as the people. Success is built on the strength of our teams – you need to know how to manage great people to create great success.\n7.\t“Objectivity” – maintain your objectivity. You need to practice business objectivity, regardless of opinion, what’s the best for the business…this is where the hard decisions are made like hiring and firing.\n8.\t“Continue to Learn and Grow” – invest in reading and keeping yourself educated. Online courses, books, seminars, conferences, trade publications, trend reports, the list is long. Keep up.\n9.\t“Risks” – step out of the comfort zone. Every good manager takes a risk to ensure continued success of the business. Risks are based on timing, experience, education, and business acumen. \n10.\t “Listen” – keep your ears open, your eyes peeled, your mouth shut. | title | How-To Get Your Seat At The Table: Part 5, Make a Friend In HR |
| body | This tip credit goes to Bonin Bough @bonin. I love talking with him when I get the chance...he's one of the most brilliant, interesting people I've met. I tend to keep up with what he's doing because he's inspiring. I recently, read an interview by him where he talks about moving up the corporate ladder. Unique to his list of tips was "Make a Friend In HR". Due to my own pre-conceived notions, I'd never thought about HR as a partner. My experience had always set me up as an adversary. Whether trying to hire for my own team or get someone hired by my clients, more often then not they acted as the naysayers. The truth is a well run HR team is the core of the company. They can be the most often is informative when it comes to advice for navigating your career at the company. HR can also be the most informed about what positions are opening, changes to the organizational chart, and workflow. Connecting with the HR person who's working on career planning and succession in your company can be one of the smartest networking moves you make. Talking with the recruiters and talent acquisition or management people will give you insight into what skills are being promoted in the company. Make a friend of any of the people in these groups, let them know your interests, your qualifications, latest successes, that way, when the time comes to recommend internal staff for new positions, you've got an ally and advocate already in the room. It's time to get know someone in HR. |

| title | How-To Get Your Seat at the Table: Part 4, Build Your Outside Resources or Join A Club |
| body | It's important to look for career specific clubs and organizations that will help you grow. Trade associations are one of the best ways to meet others in your field. Joining a trade association is an investment in yourself and your career. Some are free and some require an annual fee, so its important to pick one that suits your career goals. Trade Associations give you the opportunity to be seen by people in the industry as an expert, they help build your leadership skills, provide opportunities to connect with industry professionals, gives you exclusive access to industry insights, learn about trends and most importantly network. In many cases, you get access to executives and hiring authorities from other companies that are outside of your circle, or your LinkedIn network. Trade associations provide multiple outlets for members to participate with others while building your career. Of course picking the right organization is important. You want to pick one that has a good size membership with regular meet-ups where you can learn while engaging socially with professionals. You also want one that pushes out new information on a schedule - like a newsletter or email blast - and a website that updates its content regularly. If you are in a profession that requires a license or certification, picking an organization that offers seminars or points towards maintaining any certifications is a bonus. Here's a Tip: Pick an organization that has events and seminars that benefit the company. You can also pick an organization that executives from your company belong too already. If the organization has a good reputation you have less explaining to do to get the expense approved. Often companies already have a budget for professional development which includes memberships. They will pay for employee's memberships if they can see the employee is getting insights or training that aligns with company goals. Building your network outside the company you work for is important to your career development. Outside resources, are objective and because they have a different point of view can provide solutions you may not have considered. Outside resources have experiences that you don't and ideas you haven't contemplated. Outside resources can verify that you are an expert in your field. By utilizing these resources, you build your confidence, you have a network to pull from for advice and expertise, you learn what you need to know in order to get your chance to sit at the table. Share your thoughts with me directly or in the comments. |

| title | How-To Get Your Seat At the Table: Part 3, Learn From An Expert |
| body | In most companies the experts are the executives. For the purpose of our conversation today, we consider them experts because they know how to get ahead in the company. Think about it, they've navigated to corporate structure, worked at positioning themselves to be in the right place at the right time, they've got the right connections and know what's coming next. Who better to align yourself with, then a successful Executive. So how do you get to know an executive? First take the time to learn who the upper management is in the company. Usually company websites, corporate newsletters, even the handbook will have the names listed. As you review the list, look for the executive that has similar interests. Interests can vary and include professional interest or area of expertise, schools attended, hobbies, philanthropic interests, cultural background, or maybe just something they have an proficient in and you want to know more about. The most important point is your interest must be authentic, DONOT fake your interest. Now that you have a bonding point, take action... Introduce yourself! It's the easiest way. Say hello and start a conversation. Ask a question that targets your common interest and suggest a way to stay connected on the topic. Volunteer to help out! Executives often have opportunities for employees to help out with day to day work (we talked about this in Part 2, Do A Favor). There can also be opportunities for on philanthropic projects, pro-bono work (especially agencies and law firms), or internal corporate projects targeted at employees. Ask Someone You Know! Sometimes you have a peer or manager that knows the executive you want to meet. Ask for an introduction. It's simple and less pressure then walking up and introducing yourself. Which every approach you choose remember to "Always be Appropriate!" Don't over exaggerate or lie to impress the executive. Remember authenticity, honest interest and a common ground are the best ways to create a solid professional relationship. As you get to know each other and share experiences it becomes easier to for you to gain insight and be mentored. Share your thoughts and questions ... love to hear your thoughts... |

| title | How-To Get Your Seat at the Table: Part 2, Do A Favor |
| body | A few years back I organized a panel discussion giving career advice to professionals. It took place at Microsoft. The participants included executives from Microsoft, Pepsi, Huffington Post, UWG. The audience was full of millennials anywhere from 2 - 5 years into their career. Great audience, great panel, it was an amazing event. Immediate feedback was wonderful and continued to come in weeks after the event. One audience participant, actually approached me to let me know he followed the advice of the panel - on how to get noticed - the result was he'd gotten a promotion and a raise. His question was perfect opening to understand some of the dilemma employees face when they are trying to get ahead. To "get a seat at the table" you either need a manager that is well connected and willing to advocate for your work/name in front of the right executives, or make your own connections. To get noticed, you need others outside of your immediate team to know who you are, your skills, your work ethic, and your ability to deliver on a project. How do you do that? DO A FAVOR! First, do your research. Figure out which team you can be the most helpful to, fits your career goals, and you can honestly commit to doing a good job. Next, approach the manager. Casually or formally. Ask them questions about the work, team and themselves. Tell them why you reached out, about your interests, and offer to help should the need arise. And, pay attention. When the time comes and you notice they are busy, offer a helping hand. Sometimes the simplest task can be the most helpful favor. In a work setting running an excel spreadsheet, answering a call, setting up a meeting. Or more complexity could be needed, like doing research. Anything that gives support and relief is a great favor. Keep in mind, a Favor is not a Habit, it is an Act of Giving. A Favor has characteristics - it has a timeframe, it relieves the receiver of the favor, it is offered as well as asked for, it promotes good will, it is a reminder of the value of the person giving the favor. Doing a Favor is your chance to show your stuff, make sure to commit to what you can do and do beautifully, in a reasonable (or short) amount of time and error free. The point is to create an impact quickly and efficiently. What do you suggest is a great way to do a favor? Let us know in the comments below. |

| title | Don't Lie On Your Resume |
| body | Lately, I've been asked "how thoroughly do recruiters check the information on resumes?" I immediately respond - don't lie on your resume, don't lie on the application. Specifically, don't lie about dates you've worked at a company, company you've worked at, salary earned, title, school, degree, graduation dates. Those are the categories most background checks target first for accuracy. True story, I had a candidate freelancing for my client. The client decided he was a perfect fit and wanted to hire him. His work, his ideas, culture - everything fit. The salary was six figures. They did the background check based on his resume. They discovered he lied about the school he graduated from. The offer was rescinded, he was let go immediately. It had to be one of the hardest conversations I've ever had. He was broken-hearted and so was I. He had gotten bad advice from a recruiter at a different company. She had told him to change his school because no one ever checked, and it would make him look better. Let's be real - Recruiters look for reason's to eliminate applicants. As much as it's their responsibility to find the right candidate, its also their job to keep the wrong ones out. Whether recruiters realize it or not - they spend most of their time keeping the wrong job applicants out - so don't give them an additional reason to eliminate you from the list. The reality is we live in a world full of threats. Every company is trying to make sure they are hiring good people. They don't want their next employee hire to be a "headline" on the news. Companies pay third parties to ensure they are hiring individuals with clean backgrounds, and verify the candidate is being truthful. Simply, don't lie on your resume. If you are concerned about anything on your resume, then ask how to address it. I advise people professionally, I speak publicly on career and leadership. I can answer questions or direct you to resources. ...feel free to ask anytime...comments or direct message. |
