Riffs in the video: 1) Darkthrone - In the Shadow of the Horns (from the album A Blaze in the Northern Sky, 1992) 2) Bathory - Raise the Dead (from the album Bathory, 1984) 3) Summoning - Lugburz (from the album Minas Morgul, 1995) 4) Burzum - Spell Of Destruction (from the album Burzum, 1992) 5) Mayhem - Freezing Moon (from the album De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas, 1994) Honestly, I’m not a fan of Darkthrone and Mayhem, and those riffs are the only ones that I like from all of their songs I had a chance to hear. If I had to choose my favorite riff of all these five, it would be Summoning - Lugburz. The whole album Minas Morgul is brilliant, and for me it stays the best of their albums. It’s the creepiest, the darkest one, while all the following ones have just epic mood, which is nice too, but there is always something missing in them for me. Like Summoning’s “Minas Morgul”, the first five albums of Burzum take a special place in my heart. Despite their mastering quality has become a meme, I actually think that everything before Filosofem, especially Burzum ‘92 sounds good. I can hear all instruments clearly, and nothing is too compressed. There is a specific “homey” DIY feel to them, with all Varg Vikernes’ performing imperfections that feel, I would say, cozy. Filosofem is overcompressed, as it’s already 1996 when it’s released, and the loudness war has started… But it’s fine to listen to in headphones if you can get used to that weird guitar tone, which I even find enjoyable. Bathory’s “Raise the Dead” is the best song from their debut album, in my opinion. And actually the only one I like from that album, because for me personally, Bathory starts from their second album - “The Return……”. _________________________ Explore my channel for acoustic metal and other weird fun. | body | <center><a href='https://d.tube/#!/v/genewillow/ox7xrmoj09e'><img src='https://i.ytimg.com/vi/Bdlp5MTuqfc/maxresdefault.jpg'></a></center><hr> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bdlp5MTuqfc My acoustic black metal cover version of Burzum's song "Beholding The Daughters Of The Firmament" / "Erblicket die Töchter des Firmament" from the album "Filosofem", 1996. This song is my most favorite of all that Varg Vikernes has ever written. I was wondering what this weird title meant, until I watched Varg’s video where he explains everything about the title and the lyrics of the song. You can watch it on his official channel to learn more: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tj--j... My guitar seems to be out of tune, but I actually tried my best to tune it before the recording. This is the best result I could achieve with the old strings that had been changed the last time three or four years before I filmed this video. Also, the frets on the guitar are worn out, which also contributes to the detuning. But if I need to justify myself, I can also add that it’s black metal, and moreover Burzum, which has little to do with high quality, so let’s assume I just naturally followed the best traditions of the genre. I also realized that I’m playing the main riff incorrectly. I’m playing “3-3-2-3-0000…”, while in the original version Varg plays “3-2-2-3-0000…”. And I like the way it’s played in the original version better. I think I saw this mistake in some guitar pro tab and just copied it, so shame on me, as this riff is pretty simple. I also had an idea to record it in a better quality, like I record my other acoustic metal songs - with the bass part, two guitar tracks in the left and right channels, and vocals, but I had a problem with coming up with the way I would sing it. Growling and bellowing, like I usually do, wouldn’t really work with this kind of song, and I can’t imagine how to sing it with clean vocals either. So I just decided to play it as an instrumental, in one take. Maybe I will get back to it someday, but I can not promise. The whole album Filosofem takes a special place in my heart because of its cold and sad mood. This is funny that Varg himself seems to have never been a depressive person, but his music makes an impression that its author lives in an ongoing emotional suffering. _________________________ My social media and my other projects: 1) You Tube channel: https://www.youtube.com/user/JohnnySkorohodov 2) Facebook human page: https://www.facebook.com/genewillows 3) Facebook rockstar page: https://www.facebook.com/genewillowfan 4) Twitter: https://twitter.com/GeneWillowMetal 5) All my music on Bandcamp: https://genewillow.bandcamp.com 6) My blog about retro exploitation films and creepy music "Escapist's Advisor": https://escapistsadvisor.blogspot.com <hr><a href='https://d.tube/#!/v/genewillow/ox7xrmoj09e'> ▶️ DTube</a><br /><a href='https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bdlp5MTuqfc'> ▶️ YouTube</a> |

I was wondering what this weird title meant, until I watched Varg’s video where he explains everything about the title and the lyrics of the song. You can watch it on his official channel to learn more: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tj--j...\n\nMy guitar seems to be out of tune, but I actually tried my best to tune it before the recording. This is the best result I could achieve with the old strings that had been changed the last time three or four years before I filmed this video. Also, the frets on the guitar are worn out, which also contributes to the detuning. But if I need to justify myself, I can also add that it’s black metal, and moreover Burzum, which has little to do with high quality, so let’s assume I just naturally followed the best traditions of the genre.\n\nI also realized that I’m playing the main riff incorrectly. I’m playing “3-3-2-3-0000…”, while in the original version Varg plays “3-2-2-3-0000…”. And I like the way it’s played in the original version better. I think I saw this mistake in some guitar pro tab and just copied it, so shame on me, as this riff is pretty simple.\n\nI also had an idea to record it in a better quality, like I record my other acoustic metal songs - with the bass part, two guitar tracks in the left and right channels, and vocals, but I had a problem with coming up with the way I would sing it. Growling and bellowing, like I usually do, wouldn’t really work with this kind of song, and I can’t imagine how to sing it with clean vocals either. So I just decided to play it as an instrumental, in one take. Maybe I will get back to it someday, but I can not promise.\n\nThe whole album Filosofem takes a special place in my heart because of its cold and sad mood. For those who couldn’t make it: Song 1: Napalm Death - Instinct of Survival: Song 2: Mortician - Zombie Apocalypse Song 3: Gut - Wound Fuck: Song 4: Gut - The Taboo Room: Song 5: Mucupurulent: Zombie Squad 69: Song 6: ROMPEPROP- swimming in neanderthalers If I had to choose one riff from this list, I would pick Mortician’s “Zombie Apocalypse”. This is one of the heaviest riffs I have ever heard. It’s very fun to play on acoustic guitar. If you noticed, I am using my thumb to play it instead of the pick, as this gives more of fat, bulky bass. I wish acoustic guitars had a tremolo machine, so I could play it properly using the tremolo lever in the end. I think it worked pretty good, and close to the original by the level of heaviness, even though I didn’t use any distortion and didn’t even equalize anything - just pure acoustic sound. The next in my preferences would be the two riffs by Gut from their legendary (in pornogrind circles) album “Odour of Torture” released in 1995. Slow, nasty riffs making you nod your head to the simple rhythm. ROMPEPROP is another crazy and primitively superheavy legendary band from Netherlands. This riff is taken from their album with a beautiful title "Hellcocks Pornflakes". Actually, I’m not even sure if I should include their riff after or before the riffs of Gut in my chart of preferences. I’ll be honest, before making this video I had known the Zombie Squad 69 as a song by Cock and Ball Torture. Only after looking it up online before uploading the video I discovered that it was actually a cover of the song by Mucupurulent. And I’m playing it in a different manner than in the original - using 16th notes instead of 8th in the end of the phrase. I just like it better this way. Finally, Napalm Death. The riff from “Instinct of Survival” actually sounds like a regular thrash or death metal riff, but as Napalm Death are officially considered a grindcore band, and I really love this riff, I decided to include it as well. _________________________ Explore my channel for acoustic metal and other weird fun. Actually, I decided to just put the list of all songs the riffs are from here to make it easier for you: Riff 0: Death - Symbolic Riff 1: Napalm Death - If the Truth Be Known Riff 2: Tiamat - Ancient Entity Riff 3: Cannibal Corpse - Covered With Sores Riff 4: Sepultura - Necromancer Riff 5: Obituary - Body Bag I guess the first riff is too famous to include it into a guessing game, so I decided to give it number 0. This riff by Napalm Death is my most favorite riff of all riffs Napalm Death have ever written. I also have another video - with grindcore riffs, but I decided to include this one into the death metal video, as the song, and the whole album “Harmony Corruption” are almost pure death metal, and not really grindcore, despite the general image of the band. The Tiamat’s riff is the opening riff from the song Ancient Entity from their second LP “The Astral Sleep, 1991”, and I highly recommend it to any death metal fan. It’s a very original work in everything - from the tunes to the production sound. I love the way Johan Edlund (the singer) screams like insane in the end of the second guitar phrase of the riff, and then the rest of the instruments kick in. And then, further in the song, the bluesy solo played over the heavy death metal rhythm guitars. And then… everything else in the album. Just try it if you haven’t yet. Cannibal Corpse - Covered With Sores is from the heaviest album of the band - Butchered at Birth, 1991. A bulky, fat, killer opening riff. I love the guitar tone on this album. One of the heaviest albums I’ve ever heard. Sepultura - Necromancer is from their EP “Bestial Devastation”, from 1985. It’s insane how heavy and ahead of their time they were. And the tuning on it is C - two steps down from the standard! This is pure death metal, two years earlier before Death’s “Scream Bloody Gore” that many mistakenly believe to be the first death metal album in the history. I’m not saying Chuck Schuldiner wasn’t the first person to play death metal (and I’m not saying he was either, as it’s difficult to tell), as before “Scream Bloody Gore” there were demo tapes, and who knows who heard who first. But speaking about label-released albums, it’s one of the two earliest death metal releases I know about, and it’s heavier than the other one, which is “Seven Churches, 1985” by Possessed. The riff from Obituary’s Body Bag is just one of the most memorable riffs in death metal, which is a trademark of one of my most favorite death metal bands. _________________________ Explore my channel for acoustic metal and other weird fun. Actually, I decided to just put the list of all songs the riffs are from here to make it easier for you:\n\nRiff 0: Death - Symbolic\nRiff 1: Napalm Death - If the Truth Be Known\nRiff 2: Tiamat - Ancient Entity\nRiff 3: Cannibal Corpse - Covered With Sores\nRiff 4: Sepultura - Necromancer\nRiff 5: Obituary - Body Bag\n\nI guess the first riff is too famous to include it into a guessing game, so I decided to give it number 0.\n\nThis riff by Napalm Death is my most favorite riff of all riffs Napalm Death have ever written. I also have another video - with grindcore riffs, but I decided to include this one into the death metal video, as the song, and the whole album “Harmony Corruption” are almost pure death metal, and not really grindcore, despite the general image of the band.\n\nThe Tiamat’s riff is the opening riff from the song Ancient Entity from their second LP “The Astral Sleep, 1991”, and I highly recommend it to any death metal fan. Just try it if you haven’t yet.\n\nCannibal Corpse - Covered With Sores is from the heaviest album of the band - Butchered at Birth, 1991. A bulky, fat, killer opening riff. I love the guitar tone on this album. One of the heaviest albums I’ve ever heard.\n\nSepultura - Necromancer is from their EP “Bestial Devastation”, from 1985. But speaking about label-released albums, it’s one of the two earliest death metal releases I know about, and it’s heavier than the other one, which is “Seven Churches, 1985” by Possessed.\n\nThe riff from Obituary’s Body Bag is just one of the most memorable riffs in death metal, which is a trademark of one of my most favorite death metal bands.\n_________________________\n\nExplore my channel for acoustic metal and other weird fun. I decided to change the lyrics to turn the song into a ridiculous love serenade. Though I still kept the structure of some phrases to make it remind the original song. Honestly, I’m not even comfortable with singing lyrics like these, at least publicly :) I really love that opening riff, played a bit differently by two guitars, and the creepy harmonies - the trademark of Cannibal Corpse sound. I also added my own in some parts to make it even creepier and heavier. Of course, I couldn’t manage to play the hammer on - pull off parts like they are supposed to be played in the original version on an electric guitar, so I needed to use picking and simplify these parts a bit. But I think it still sounds good. Stripped, Raped and Strangled was really tough to play, as playing death metal on an acoustic guitar is physically hard, especially a brutal death metal song like this. Moreover, during the recording the 6th string broke down. And not somewhere in the middle of the string, but that part that holds that tiny ball that is fixed on the bridge of the guitar, so the ball couldn’t be held in place anymore. And I decided to repair it instead of looking for a replacement string. While I was doing the repair, the end of this thickest string, that had a form of a hook, thrusted into my finger and stuck in there. All rounded end was stuck completely deep in the meat of my finger and I could not take it out for about a minute, but then I could manage it. I have photos on my Facebook fanpage. _________________________ Explore my channel for acoustic metal and other weird fun. I chose this song because of its killer slow riff - one of my most favorite riffs in the whole genre of death metal. The other reason was because this song was pretty easy to play and it’s also short. This music video was like a test for me - the first acoustic death metal music video I ever made for that time, so I wanted to start with something simple and see how it would work. Interestingly, the album “Swamped in Gore” was the first death metal album in the history that was recorded entirely in digital form instead of using analog tape. Yet, it wasn’t commercially successful for Broken Hope (at least right after its initial release by Grindcore International, because later it was reissued by Metal Blade Records), but it made them noticed and signed by Metal Blade Records. In fact, this is one of my most favorite death metal albums, and I think it stays the heaviest and simply the best among the all discography of Broken Hope. Just listen to the sound of that snare drum in the intro - it’s like a thunder! The guitar tones, and of course the powerful extremely low growling vocals of one of the most brutal singers in death metal - Joe Ptacek - make the album a masterpiece of brutal death / grindcore music. As I usually do with cover songs, I tried to contribute some changes to the music. I added harmony during that tremolo picking part before the slow riff, instead of just playing both guitar parts identically. The same is while playing all other riffs, but in a smaller amount. I doubt if you can hear the lyrics through growling, but the song itself is about a wild boar (hog) who is very wicked, dangerous and tends to be impolite with humans. _________________________ Explore my channel for acoustic metal and other weird fun.
