| body | .jpg) What NHS taught me about leadership and community I joined my high school's [National Honor Society](https://www.nhs.us/) chapter in 2012 and served as the chapter's secretary for a year. I had a great time - I highly recommend any high school student to join it - and I learned some things that still impact my life today. Here are three of the best lessons I learned during my time in the National Honor Society. 1 Care About Your Community The National Honor Society requires its members to complete a certain number of community service hours each year. While I didn't expect to get much out of community service, I actually had some great experiences. I helped plant new trees in [Waldo Canyon](https://www.9news.com/article/news/local/wildfires/its-been-5-years-since-the-waldo-canyon-fire/451620594) just over a year after my family had to evacuate the fire that damaged that area. A year after that, when the fire's damage and other conditions created flash flooding, I worked with the same organization to make sandbags. I made breakfast for homeless people and discovered many of them were smart and fairly decent. These experiences taught me to see the value in people I normally don't associate with and that communities working together can create healing and rebirth. 2 If You Want to Lead People, Be Personal When I started helping preside over meeting as my chapter's secretary, I noticed that some members were underperforming. Inevitably, there were people who wouldn't respond to requests, people who wouldn't pay attention during meetings and people who didn't show up at meetings at all. When I brought this up with the other officers, I suggested calling people out, asking them to be quiet. One of the officers told me that wouldn't have much effect and I'd have much more success rate if I went up to the people after meetings and talked with them one-on-one. I realized then that leading people isn't just about being in charge. Leading people well means meeting people one-on-one. It means being personable and showing some empathy so people want to work with you. 3 Be Willing to Go the Extra Mile Technically, I was only a secretary during my last year in the National Honor Society. That meant my stated job was to record what happened at each meeting, send emails and if necessary preside over meetings. That year though, the president and vice president for that year had tough schedules and couldn't always attend meetings. So at times, I was the officer presiding over meetings and giving input on projects. This situation wasn't ideal, but I had to work with it. Like it or not, there are times where contributing to a cause mean that you have to put in extra work. Along the way, that extra work gives you great insights. | body | If there's one question that writers (or entertainers in general) have [gotten tired](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-C48jAkVlI0) of hearing, it's "Where do you get your ideas?" or "where you get your inspiration?" Many writers have tried to answer that question, with [varying responses](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SKn3_BSQojo). Psychologists have [weighed in](https:\www.psychologytoday.com\us\blog\the-social-thinker\201712\where-do-writers-get-their-ideas) on this topic as well. Sometimes though, the funny answers are best. It's surprising the things that writers, fictional characters (or fictional versions of writers) will say when asked this question. Here's a look at some of the best answers people have given. 1 "A Voice in My Head Speaking German" This comes from a scene from the sitcom "Seinfeld." In this scene, the main character, a standup comedian named Jerry, is [talking](https://youtu.be/QMkmZXYbHng?t=39s) to someone at a party. The person asks Jerry what he does for a living, and then asks where he gets his material. Jerry sarcastically [says](https://youtu.be/QMkmZXYbHng?t=54s) that he hears a voice in his head tells him jokes in German, which he then has translated and uses in his act. 2 Schenectady Science fiction writer [Harlan Ellison](https://www.barnesandnoble.com/blog/sci-fi-fantasy/harlan-ellison-hes-not-dead-and-hes-not-done-yet-either/) had a reputation for being a bit cantankerous. He particularly hated this question, so he [developed](https://web.archive.org/web/20120903061554/http:/www.doorly.com/writing/HarlanEllison.htm) a snarky answer: Schenectady. People would then look confused and he would explain, "There's a swell Idea Service in Schenectady; and every week I send 'em twenty-five bucks; and every week they send me a fresh six-pack of ideas." 3 Wearing Baby Clothes This comes from a scene on "The Dean Martin Show" where special guest Jonathon Winters is [playing](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aaIKm49knrs) a toy salesman. Being a great improviser (he mentored Robin Williams), Winters comes up with some hilarious jokes. At one point Dean Martin's character [asks](https://youtu.be/aaIKm49knrs?t=5m4s) him where he gets his inspiration to create the toys he sells. Winters responds that he comes up with ideas by wearing baby clothes and talking to his wife in baby talk. If that answer doesn't shut people up, I don't think anything will. 4 The Idea of the Month Club This is really a stock answer to the question that many writers seem to use. 5 There's A Greek Muse Being Held Captive in the Attic Another fictional answer, this comes from ["Calliope,"](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Sandman:_Dream_Country#Calliope) a comic book story by Neil Gaiman. Various authors have [apparently used](http://journal.neilgaiman.com/2004/05/happy-mothers-day.asp) the basic idea since then. In this story, part of Gaiman's ["Sandman" series](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x-qLqFZMPQI), an author has no ideas and is under contract to write a sequel to his first novel. Desperate, he strikes a deal with an older author who captured one of the Nine Muses years ago. The younger author keeps the Muse captive in his house, treating her horribly even as he gets great ideas. Then the Muse's ex-husband, a dark godlike being who rules people's dreams, finds the author. Needless to say, he's not happy. 6 The Writers Inspiration Bureau This answer comes from a story titled ["A Shady Plot"](http://www.personapaper.com/article/30434-ghost-story-review-a-shady-plot-by-elsie-brown) by Elsie Brown, collected in the 1921 anthology ["Humorous Ghost Stories."](https://www.amazon.com/Humorous-Ghost-Stories-Dorothy-Scarborough-ebook/dp/B004TIL8UA) In this story (which is apparently quite popular among English teachers), a writer gets contacted by a ghost named Helen who works for the Writers Inspiration Bureau. Evidently, the Writers Inspiration Bureau consists of ghosts giving writers ideas for stories. A fascinating concept. 7 Uber Gletch This one comes from Theodore Geisel (better known as Dr. Seuss). Apparently, the good doctor could be a bit sarcastic when he was irritated. When people asked him where he got his ideas, he reportedly would [say](https://sites.google.com/site/suessbegooseirp/) the following: "I get my ideas in Switzerland near the Forka Pass. There is a little town called Gletch, and 2000 feet above Gletch there is a smaller Hamlet called Uber Gletch. I go there on the 4th of August every summer to get my cuckoo clock repaired. While the cuckoo is in the hospital, I wander around and talk to the people in the streets. They are very strange people, and I get my ideas from them." 8 "Every writer begins with..." In the film ["Finding Neverland,"](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M5_AOB9eCDM) playwright J.M. Barrie befriends a single mother and her four sons, who inspire him to write the play "Peter Pan." One of the boys, Peter, has some writing talent. At one point in the film, Barrie hands Peter a blank notebook and says something along the lines of "every writer begins with a good notebook." While filming though, actor Johnny Depp decided he wanted to have some fun. One of the bloopers shows him deliberately [misstating](https://youtu.be/-ixtYIcVeDE?t=1m33s) the line and giving a long list of things every writer starts with, including "some cotton wool" and "a long striped animal." 9 "Curiosity and the Rent" Attributed to author [Clare Sambrook,](http://www.writewords.org.uk/interviews/answers.asp?qid=17) this answer is essentially a clever way of saying "I just do it. Otherwise, I don't eat." Humorist Terry Pratchett [reportedly said](https://www.lspace.org/books/apf/words-from-the-master.html) something similar describing why having a journalism background helps many writers: "you very quickly learn the direct link between writing and eating" 10 The Honest Answer It seems right to end this list with an honest answer. As author Neil Gaiman [put it,](http://www.neilgaiman.com/Cool_Stuff/Essays/Essays_By_Neil/Where_do_you_get_your_ideas%3F) the honest answer is simply "I make them up." "body": "\n\nIf there's one question that writers (or entertainers in general) have [gotten tired](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-C48jAkVlI0) of hearing, it's \"Where do you get your ideas?\" or \"where you get your inspiration?\"\n\nMany writers have tried to answer that question, with [varying responses](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SKn3_BSQojo).\n\nPsychologists have [weighed in](https:\\www.psychologytoday.com\\us\\blog\\the-social-thinker\\201712\\where-do-writers-get-their-ideas) on this topic as well.\n\nSometimes though, the funny answers are best. It's surprising the things that writers, fictional characters (or fictional versions of writers) will say when asked this question.\n\nHere's a look at some of the best answers people have given.\n\n1 \"A Voice in My Head Speaking German\"\n\nThis comes from a scene from the sitcom \"Seinfeld.\"\n\nIn this scene, the main character, a standup comedian named Jerry, is [talking](https://youtu.be/QMkmZXYbHng?t=39s) to someone at a party.\n\nThe person asks Jerry what he does for a living, and then asks where he gets his material.\n\nJerry sarcastically [says](https://youtu.be/QMkmZXYbHng?t=54s) that he hears a voice in his head tells him jokes in German, which he then has translated and uses in his act.\n\n2 Schenectady\n\nScience fiction writer [Harlan Ellison](https://www.barnesandnoble.com/blog/sci-fi-fantasy/harlan-ellison-hes-not-dead-and-hes-not-done-yet-either/) had a reputation for being a bit cantankerous.\n\nHe particularly hated this question, so he [developed](https://web.archive.org/web/20120903061554/http:/www.doorly.com/writing/HarlanEllison.htm) a snarky answer: Schenectady.\n\nPeople would then look confused and he would explain, \"There's a swell Idea Service in Schenectady; and every week I send 'em twenty-five bucks; and every week they send me a fresh six-pack of ideas.\"\n\n3 Wearing Baby Clothes\n\nThis comes from a scene on \"The Dean Martin Show\" where special guest Jonathon Winters is [playing](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aaIKm49knrs) a toy salesman.\n\nBeing a great improviser (he mentored Robin Williams), Winters comes up with some hilarious jokes.\n\nAt one point Dean Martin's character [asks](https://youtu.be/aaIKm49knrs?t=5m4s) him where he gets his inspiration to create the toys he sells.\n\nWinters responds that he comes up with ideas by wearing baby clothes and talking to his wife in baby talk.\n\nIf that answer doesn't shut people up, I don't think anything will.\n\n4 The Idea of the Month Club\n\nThis is really a stock answer to the question that many writers seem to use.\n\n5 There's A Greek Muse Being Held Captive in the Attic\n\nAnother fictional answer, this comes from [\"Calliope,\"](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Sandman:_Dream_Country#Calliope) a comic book story by Neil Gaiman.\n\nVarious authors have [apparently used](http://journal.neilgaiman.com/2004/05/happy-mothers-day.asp) the basic idea since then.\n\nIn this story, part of Gaiman's [\"Sandman\" series](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x-qLqFZMPQI), an author has no ideas and is under contract to write a sequel to his first novel.\n\nDesperate, he strikes a deal with an older author who captured one of the Nine Muses years ago.\n\nThe younger author keeps the Muse captive in his house, treating her horribly even as he gets great ideas.\n\nThen the Muse's ex-husband, a dark godlike being who rules people's dreams, finds the author.\n\nNeedless to say, he's not happy.\n\n6 The Writers Inspiration Bureau\n\nThis answer comes from a story titled [\"A Shady Plot\"](http://www.personapaper.com/article/30434-ghost-story-review-a-shady-plot-by-elsie-brown) by Elsie Brown, collected in the 1921 anthology [\"Humorous Ghost Stories.\"](https://www.amazon.com/Humorous-Ghost-Stories-Dorothy-Scarborough-ebook/dp/B004TIL8UA)\n\nIn this story (which is apparently quite popular among English teachers), a writer gets contacted by a ghost named Helen who works for the Writers Inspiration Bureau.\n\nEvidently, the Writers Inspiration Bureau consists of ghosts giving writers ideas for stories.\n\nA fascinating concept.\n\n7 Uber Gletch\n\nThis one comes from Theodore Geisel (better known as Dr. Seuss).\n\nApparently, the good doctor could be a bit sarcastic when he was irritated.\n\nWhen people asked him where he got his ideas, he reportedly would [say](https://sites.google.com/site/suessbegooseirp/) the following:\n\n\"I get my ideas in Switzerland near the Forka Pass. They are very strange people, and I get my ideas from them.\"\n\n8 \"Every writer begins with...\"\n\nIn the film [\"Finding Neverland,\"](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M5_AOB9eCDM) playwright J.M. Barrie befriends a single mother and her four sons, who inspire him to write the play \"Peter Pan.\"\n\nOne of the boys, Peter, has some writing talent.\n\nAt one point in the film, Barrie hands Peter a blank notebook and says something along the lines of \"every writer begins with a good notebook.\"\n\nWhile filming though, actor Johnny Depp decided he wanted to have some fun.\n\nOne of the bloopers shows him deliberately [misstating](https://youtu.be/-ixtYIcVeDE?t=1m33s) the line and giving a long list of things every writer starts with, including \"some cotton wool\" and \"a long striped animal.\"\n\n9 \"Curiosity and the Rent\"\n\nAttributed to author [Clare Sambrook,](http://www.writewords.org.uk/interviews/answers.asp?qid=17) this answer is essentially a clever way of saying \"I just do it. Otherwise, I don't eat.\"\n\nHumorist Terry Pratchett [reportedly said](https://www.lspace.org/books/apf/words-from-the-master.html) something similar describing why having a journalism background helps many writers: \"you very quickly learn the direct link between writing and eating\"\n\n10 The Honest Answer\n\nIt seems right to end this list with an honest answer.\n\nAs author Neil Gaiman [put it,](http://www.neilgaiman.com/Cool_Stuff/Essays/Essays_By_Neil/Where_do_you_get_your_ideas%3F) the honest answer is simply \"I make them up.\"\n\n\nDo You Have A Favorite Answer to This Question? | body | A look at the most unusual Bond film ever made "Never Say Never Again" has an odd place in the Bond film series. It's the only Bond film to be a remake of a previous film. It's the only Bond film not produced by Eon Productions. It's the only film to show a middle-aged Bond. It also happens to [star](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fm6QtRMuJfQ) Rowan Atkinson, who played a parody version of Bond in the Johnny English movies. How did this movie come about? The short version is that in the late 1950s, Bond creator Ian Fleming tried to make a movie with filmmaker Kevin McClory. As Fleming biographer John Pearson [explains it](https://www.amazon.com/Life-Ian-Fleming-John-Pearson/dp/1448208068), Fleming wanted to work with McClory because McClory's upcoming film "The Boy and the Bridge" was supposed to be a big success. "The Boy and the Bridge" didn't turn out well, so Fleming shifted to writing the Bond novel "Thunderball," based on the story he'd developed with McClory and other screenwriters. A lawsuit followed. Ultimately Fleming got to could keep the rights to the book "Thunderball" (provided the book had a "based on a screen treatment" note inside) and McClory got the movie rights. Eon Productions worked with McClory to make the 1965 movie "Thunderball." Since he still had the movie rights, McClory worked with other producers company to adapt "Thunderball" again years later. "Never Say Never Again" mostly follows the same basic plot as its predecessor, with a few big changes. In this film, Bond (played one last time by Sean Connery) is a middle-aged man trying to work with a new M who doesn't approve of his methods. After [failing](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ecu77iLGLBs) (at least by his boss's standards) to pass a training simulation, Bond gets sent to a health clinic to shape up. Obviously, Bond doesn't follow the clinic's diet program. He does, however, discover a pilot hiding in the clinic who's being blackmailed to steal NATO nuclear weapons. When the theft takes place and the thieves demand a ransom, M is forced to deploy 00 agents to find the bombs. Bond gets assigned to the Bahamas. He quickly runs into a mysterious millionaire whose girlfriend is related to the pilot he saw at the clinic. In true Bond fashion, things proceed to get hot, exciting and explosive. Overall, "Never Say Never Again" is a solid film. With the exception of an 80ish-sounding score and a scene where Bond [plays](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vUc4GkMN1qs) a video game, it sidesteps trying to seem trendy by referencing whatever or pop culture things were popular at the time. That automatically makes the film better than Roger Moore films like "Octopussy" and "The Man with the Golden Gun." The movie's tone is a little tedious, but some scenes are genuinely chilling and frightening. That makes it similar but better than Pierce Brosnan films like "Tomorrow Never Dies" and "The World is Not Enough." The movie also sometimes messes with tradition at times (this Bond villain is genuinely charming). These changes work well and bring something new to the table. However, "Never Say Never Again" really shines when it shows its themes. The movie turns out to be visionary in its own way, dealing with problems the canonical Bond wouldn't face until much later. It starts by showing Bond dealing with an irritating supervisor who's trying to be trendy and thinks Bond's outdated. Over a decade later, Pierce Brosnan's Bond would face the same problem in "GoldenEye," [working](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tEujAIjTldk) for an M who relies too much on analysts and thinks Bond is a Cold War relic. This film also shows how Bond and his department have changed over the years. He's past his prime. Q's department has been severely [reduced](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qH3jaW3YJ9o) by budget cuts. In short, this Bond has to face the fact that many people think the world's passed him by. By association, "Never Say Never Again" considers how spy movies and the public's perception of spies had changed since the first Bond films. Is there really a place for old-school spies and school-boy heroics in 1983? This is basically the same struggle that Daniel Craig's Bond would face over twenty years later in "Skyfall." By that time, the same questions would be even prominent and the answers even murkier. Does "Never Say Never Again" reach the same conclusion as "Skyfall"? Well, that's for you to find out. You'll enjoy the ride. This article is Copyright 2018 by Gabriel Connor Salter. Originally published by the Odyssey Online on September 10, 2018. | body | [A while back,](https://steemit.com/photography/@gcsalter/strangest-way-to-hide-a-geocache-item) I wrote a post about an odd object I found in a library book. Here's something that actaully tops that. I ordered a particular book through my college library for research, it came in this envelope: Well, this is odd, I thought, since I've never ordered a book that came in a package like this. Upon opening it, I quickly discovered what the envelope was for. The first couple of pages looked fine: But the spine looked like this: And the inside looked like the following: There were even a few places where whole sections of pages were barely attached: I'm upset at the fact the library sent me this book (it happens to be [a very good one,](https://www.amazon.com/Heritage-Horror-English-Gothic-1946-1972/dp/0380000695) if you get a chance to read it). I'm just shocked at the fact someone would hurt a book this badly... and yet return it to the library. P.S. If you're interesting in this book, you can also get [a revised version](https://www.goodreads.com/review/show/2497917805?) which is cheaper |

| body | In Victorian Britain, it was traditional to read a ghost story for Christmas - stories with a holiday theme like "The Christmas Carol" by Charles Dickens or regular horror stories like "Lost Hearts" by M.R. James. So, if you have a little time in the next couple of days before Christmas, find one of these classic ghost stories and have a good old-fashioned holiday scare: 1 [“A Christmas Carol”](https://www.ibiblio.org/ebooks/Dickens/Carol/Dickens_Carol.pdf) by Charles Dickens 2 [“A Warning to the Curious”](http://www.thin-ghost.org/items/show/165) by M.R. | body | NaNoWriMo (or [National Novel Writing Month](https://nanowrimo.org/)) is an annual event where you take the month of November to write a story that’s 50,000 words long, the equivalent of a good-sized novel. This is a big task, so here are five things that may help you get through NaNoWriMo: 1. Buy A Water Clock As the name implies, this clock pours water on you to wake you up. Sometimes, especially after a long writing session the night before, you need a little extra motivation to get up in the morning. 2. Schedule Bribing Hire a friend or roommate to bribe you with chocolate for every chapter you finish. 3. Try the Locker Strategy They say desperation breeds productivity, and nothing will make you more desperate than this option. Convince someone to lock you in a closet with just your laptop. No one lets you out for any reason until the laptop battery runs out or you finish the book. 4. Visualize Spy Thriller Situations Pretend you’re the main character in a spy thriller and the nuclear weapon (there's always at least one of those in the plot) will go off unless you finish the first draft. 5. Work through the Pain As you work, tell yourself the following: “if you can feel your fingers bleeding on the keyboard, you’re not moving fast enough yet.” If need be, write this message on a notepad and tape it to your computer. |

"body": "NaNoWriMo (or [National Novel Writing Month](https://nanowrimo.org/)) is an annual event where you take the month of November to write a story that’s 50,000 words long, the equivalent of a good-sized novel. \n\nThis is a big task, so here are five things that may help you get through NaNoWriMo:\n\n1.\tBuy A Water Clock\n\nAs the name implies, this clock pours water on you to wake you up. Sometimes, especially after a long writing session the night before, you need a little extra motivation to get up in the morning. \n\n2.\tSchedule Bribing\n\nHire a friend or roommate to bribe you with chocolate for every chapter you finish. \n\n3.\tTry the Locker Strategy \n\nThey say desperation breeds productivity, and nothing will make you more desperate than this option. Convince someone to lock you in a closet with just your laptop. No one lets you out for any reason until the laptop battery runs out or you finish the book. \n\n4.\tVisualize Spy Thriller Situations\n\nPretend you’re the main character in a spy thriller and the nuclear weapon (there's always at least one of those in the plot) will go off unless you finish the first draft.\n\n5.\tWork through the Pain\n\nAs you work, tell yourself the following: “if you can feel your fingers bleeding on the keyboard, you’re not moving fast enough yet.”\n\nIf need be, write this message on a notepad and tape it to your computer.",

| body | This week, I had the privilege of giving a talk about [H.P Lovecraft and J.R.R. Tolkien](https://gcsalter.wordpress.com/2018/10/27/lovecraft-and-tolkien-dread-horror-and-human-flourish/) at Taylor University. It turned out to be a success, and one person commented afterward that they really wanted to start reading H.P. Lovecraft's stories. Since Lovecraft's stories can be a little hard to get into at first, here's my list of six H.P. Lovecraft stories that should serve as a good introduction. For those of you who prefer listening to reading, I've attached links to audiobooks based on each story (including a recent adaptation of "Dagon" by [Tall Tale TV](http://talltaletv.com/), which recently [adapted](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gd5MPwXppd4) one of my stories). 1 [The Horror in the Museum (1932)](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Hi0N979-UI) Lovecraft ghost-wrote this story for Hazel Heald, which probably means she came up with the story plot and he rewrote everything. This story follows a man who discovers a house of wax figurines with many bizarre nightmarish displays. The museum owner claims these displays aren't figurines at all. You've probably heard some version of this plot before. It's appeared in many films and plays, most notably in "House of Wax," which has been filmed no less than three times, first in [1933](https://youtu.be/ZkZBJd4UTlM?t=1557), then in [1953](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qVKMyiz_OD4) and again in 2005. However, that's precisely what makes it a good introduction. You see Lovecraft take a plot various other horror writers have used, and watch how he takes that in a strange, different direction than everyone else does. 2 [The Hound (1922)](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o3vxYuQlCCc) Stranger than the previous story but still in mildly familiar territory, "The Hound" takes you a bit further into the distinct brand Lovecraft built for himself. In this story, two graverobbers unearth a coffin in which they find a corpse wearing a strange amulet. Unfortunately, they discover, in perhaps the worst way possible, that there consequences to disrespecting the dead. 3 [Dagon (1917)](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TFoimm7hyMc) Once you've gotten used to Lovecraft's particular writing style, "Dagon" introduces you to the particular themes that populate Lovecraft's best work. In this story (often considered the first in the stories series that makes up the Cthulhu Mythos), a shipwrecked sailor lands on a strange island where he finds hints of a long-dead civilization. Certain hints the sailor finds turn out to be about things best left unknown. 4 [The Call of Cthulhu (1926)](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vqIxCqayQok) This story, certainly Lovecraft's best-known work, takes you all the way into the Cthulhu Mythos and Lovecraft's unusual style. Here, a man investigates the paper of his deceased grand uncle and discovers his uncle was researching an obscure cult which worshipped a monstrous god. The more he learns, the deeper he feels himself falling into a strange world he may not escape from. 5 [The Mound (1930)](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XA24Gmlnq5I) This is certainly the longest story on this list. In "The Mound," an ethnologist investigates a strange (possibly man-made) hill in Oklahoma, one which the locals claim is haunted by spirits. His research leads him deep into the kind of strange world you experience in stories like "The Call of Cthulhu," but describes a larger, more detailed history. As a result, it carries you a step further into Lovecraft's Cthulhu Mythos. 6 [The Dunwich Horror (1928)](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vJK5w4ZpQKc) If "The Call of Cthulhu" sums up Lovecraft's themes best and "The Mound" takes those same ideas in a more detailed context, "The Dunwich Horror" goes further than either in terms of shock value. In this story, a woman in a family known for their occult history gives birth to a strange child. In fact, the more you hear about the child and his unsavory family, the more you suspect he's not entirely human. |

| body | What do you do when your plans fail? That’s a tough question, isn’t it? I had to deal with that question in 2017. I’d been in college for two years, enjoying my classes and building great friendships with the people I hung out with. But I had a problem: I didn’t have enough money to pay for my senior year. That meant I could take some serious student loans, or I could leave school and work for a year. My family talked about it, I prayed, and we decided I should take the second option. So, I went through the process to leave school. I formally withdrew from my college, gave up my dorm room, came home and went back to living with my parents. I had no idea what I would do to make the money I needed to finish school. Then one day a neighbor I barely knew knocked on my door, and told me he needed someone to mow his lawn for the summer. A few weeks later, other neighbors (who’d lived in Florida for five years) moved back to renovate their home and hired me to help them. These events set up a pattern. Every time a temporary job ended, something new came up. One time I got a call from a company I’d repeatedly applied to work for over about five years, they finally wanted to hire me – for a better job than I originally applied for. So, when it comes to the question, “what do you do when all your plans get kicked out from under you?” My answer is simple: you pray, you look for what God wants you do right now, and you trust he’ll provide. Because there’s no way I could have done everything I did over this past year without God’s provision. Pray, Look, Trust. God will take care of the rest.
