| title | 10 incredible uses of methanol |
| body | Methanol is the common name given to methyl alcohol (CH3OH). This alcohol serves many applications — so many that it is not easy to list the most useful. Here are some of the more unusual and less well-known uses of methanol. 1. Fake leather One of methanol’s most common application is conversion to formaldehyde (CH2O). Formaldehyde has a wide range of uses in the textiles industry, including the production of synthetic leather. Animal lovers may choose to purchase items made from faux leather instead of real animal hide, and faux leather also has the advantage of being less expensive than real leather. Whatever the consumer’s reason for their purchase, the market for fake leather is large, and methanol’s part in its production is vital. 2. Health and medicine Methanol is highly toxic in its pure form and can cause blindness or even death. In spite of this, methanol is used in the production of many health and medicinal products. Vitamins, streptomycin, hormones, cholesterol drugs and many other pharmaceuticals are produced with methanol as part of the process. 3. Power storage Methanol is a powerful fuel that can be used for heating and electricity production. Power can be stored in the form of methanol instead of the more traditional use of batteries to store electricity. 4. Producing and removing shellac Shellac is a naturally produced resin with wide applications as a glue and insulator. Shellac can be difficult to manage, as it sets very hard. It requires an alcohol to be used in its removal, which works by dissolving the hard shellac material. Methanol is widely used in this process as it is such a readily available form of alcohol. 5. Removing poisonous brominated flame retardants from recycled electronics Similarly to its use in removing shellac resin, methanol is ideal in its use in gently dissolving and removing flame retardants from recycled electronics to allow them to be reconditioned for future use. 6. Old film rolls Old-style film rolls are made from thin sheets of plastic that use formaldehyde created from methanol. It is also used in the production of many other plastics and resins. 7. Cigarette filters Methanol is a vital component in cigarette filters, allowing the tightly woven material to be produced that will filter out the bulk of the cigarette’s tar and other chemicals. 8. Nappies Baby nappies also require a special type of material in order to be effective — one which will allow maximum absorbency with minimal leakage. This means that the right sort of glues must be used to keep the nappy together. Formaldehyde derived from methanol is used in the production of the special glues that are found in some brands of disposable nappies. 9. Bulletproof vests Methanol is an integral component in the production of bulletproof vests, which are required to be made from very tough synthetic materials. The acetic acid required in the manufacture of the bulletproof material, as well as in the manufacture of other polyesters and PET plastics, is produced using methanol. 10. Racing car fuel Methanol is increasingly being used as an alternative motor fuel, gaining popularity especially on the racing market. It is a readily available and cost-effective fuel for racing cars. Methanol can not be found as a natural resource though. As it is biodegradable, any natural occurrence (e.g. from decaying fruits) is swiftly split into water and CO2 by bacteria. Alas it is relatively straightforward to produce from base resources like natural gas, making it a readily available product on our planet. The many applications of methanol, including its ability to be converted into olefins, which are increasingly used in plastic production, and our reliance on methanol fuel, make it a very important part of our daily life. This means that methanol demand is likely to rise as its popularity grows. |

| title | Blockchain goes green: Tokenizing renewable fuel and energy independence |
| body | https://i2.wp.com/nxtalpha.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/air-pollution-1866788_1920.jpg?w=1920&ssl=1 Silent-Power (Projects), a company producing and installing CO2-neutral methanol synthesis plants, is working to bring this technology to private residences by tokenizing investment in the project using blockchain, providing a new way for individuals to participate in the renewable energy economy. The plants use a carbon capture technique drawing carbon dioxide out of air into methanol that is ready to be used in energy applications. When the fuel is burned, the only CO2 that is released is the same CO2 that was captured before, creating a carbon-neutral ecosystem. The company is using blockchain to enable individuals to participate in the growth of the green fuel economy by offering tokens to eligible investors. “An increasing number of people are interested in participating in and supporting the growth of the renewable energy economy. However, often practicality and infrastructure issues become a barrier to successful deployment and growth,” said Prof. Dr. sc. techn. ETH Urs. A. Weidmann, CEO and founder of Silent. Methanol can be used in mini power plants such as one developed by Silent-Power, called the Econimo. It is a combined heat and power generating device (CHP) and uses a microturbine that generates 30 kW power and 60 kW to heat or cool water. “The mini power plants function independently and can be deployed nearly anywhere, instead of the traditional, centralized, large-scale power plants that have to send power hundreds of kilometers over the grid. The Silent-Power energy concept relies instead on a robust distributed network model that involves thousands of Econimo mini power plants. This helps to avoid the transmission losses experienced by large centralized power plants,” said Prof. Weidmann. The first Econimo became operational in 2016 in Switzerland. The company is looking to build more than 2,500 Econimo units to be distributed over the next five years. These mini power plants can play the role of power grid stabilizers for utility companies, compensating for irregularity in supply from other renewable energy sources, for example, solar or wind power. Unlike the electricity produced by wind or solar, renewable methanol can be a stable storage of energy over unlimited periods of time. The global methanol market was estimated at $31 billion in 2016, with growth expected to continue. Methanol is the second most traded liquid in the world after crude oil. Today, almost 90 per cent of the world’s energy supply comes from fossil fuels and it is estimated since the 1850s, more than 135 billion tonnes of crude oil to drive our cars, fuel our power stations and heat our homes have been consumed . That figure still increases every day. It is estimated that by 2040, the world’s energy consumption will have increased by almost 50%. |

| title | Fueling the future with a renewable energy ecosystem – One that’s sustainable and environmentally friendly |
| body | Silent Power Projects Ltd. (“Silent”), has officially announced today an Initial Coin Offering (ICO ), to raise funds for the production of their Methanol Synthesis Units which are based on a new technology introduced in 2017. “I believe that the time is now to reshape the energy of the future in a CO2-neutral way. I firmly believe Methanol Synthesis is the technology which will bring this about on a global scale” – Prof. Dr. sc. techn. ETH Urs. A. Weidmann, Founder and CEO, Silent Group The Swiss company proposes a green energy solution beyond the typical wind, solar or geothermal options. Silent-Power (Projects) Ltd. produces and installs CO2-neutral, Renewable Methanol Synthesis Plants. This type of renewable energy demonstrates a range of benefits over traditional renewable sources. Current renewable energy sources don’t produce a consistent baseload power like fossil fuels do. Wind and solar power are two of the most unreliable sources. Solar panels for example cannot produce energy at night and wind power can be intermittent, inefficient and difficult to produce. Unlike many forms of renewable energy, Silent’s modular or “mini” Econimo power plants can generate renewable energy source virtually anywhere and store the energy efficiently by locking it within methanol fuel. Additionally, these plants require only a few meters of space and can be placed just about anywhere. The plants produce no smoke, smell or dust particles and run at close to 80% efficiency. In 2016 Silent was awarded the “Swiss Innovation Award” for the production of CO2 neutral electricity from methanol and for the world’s first commissioning of a methanol mini power plant. The ICO will run from November 1st – November 31st, with the pre-ICO running from September 1st – October 31st. Tokens are 0.15 CHF each and the hardcap is set at 28,000,000 CHF. Imagine heating your house in winter, with Methanol produced during summer. Imagine fueling your car with your own fuel, produced on site with solar power harnessed on your roof! "body": "Silent Power Projects Ltd. (“Silent”), has officially announced today an Initial Coin Offering (ICO ), to raise funds for the production of their Methanol Synthesis Units which are based on a new technology introduced in 2017.\n\n“I believe that the time is now to reshape the energy of the future in a CO2-neutral way. I firmly believe Methanol Synthesis is the technology which will bring this about on a global scale”\n– Prof. Dr. sc. techn. ETH Urs. A. Weidmann, Founder and CEO, Silent Group\n\nThe Swiss company proposes a green energy solution beyond the typical wind, solar or geothermal options. Silent-Power (Projects) Ltd. produces and installs CO2-neutral, Renewable Methanol Synthesis Plants. This type of renewable energy demonstrates a range of benefits over traditional renewable sources.\n\nCurrent renewable energy sources don’t produce a consistent baseload power like fossil fuels do. Wind and solar power are two of the most unreliable sources. Solar panels for example cannot produce energy at night and wind power can be intermittent, inefficient and difficult to produce.\n\nUnlike many forms of renewable energy, Silent’s modular or “mini” Econimo power plants can generate renewable energy source virtually anywhere and store the energy efficiently by locking it within methanol fuel. Additionally, these plants require only a few meters of space and can be placed just about anywhere. The plants produce no smoke, smell or dust particles and run at close to 80% efficiency.\n\nIn 2016 Silent was awarded the “Swiss Innovation Award” for the production of CO2 neutral electricity from methanol and for the world’s first commissioning of a methanol mini power plant.\n\nThe ICO will run from November 1st – November 31st, with the pre-ICO running from September 1st – October 31st. Tokens are 0.15 CHF each and the hardcap is set at 28,000,000 CHF.\n\nImagine heating your house in winter, with Methanol produced during summer.\nImagine fueling your car with your own fuel,\nproduced on site with solar power harnessed on your roof!\n\nTo keep up to date with the latest news and announcements please visit: https://silent.technology",

| title | Key carbon emission legislations and what they mean for the future |
| body | According to Carbon Brief the number of global climate change laws has increased 20-fold since 1997. A database produced by the Grantham Research Institute on Climate Change and the Environment and the Sabin Center on Climate Change Law includes more than 1,200 relevant policies across 164 countries, which account for 95% of global greenhouse gas emissions. The number of laws regarding climate change continues to grow rapidly. There were just 60 laws in place back in 1997, but the figure in 2018 stands at 1,260. During that period, the number of climate laws in existence doubled every four to five years. This rapid and consistent growth in CO2 regulations around the globe indicates a substantial opportunity for carbon-neutral technologies, and that general interest in CO2 legislation is increasing exponentially. The interest and political drive in this field is increasingly converted into policies and enforcement. There will undoubtedly be an exponential increase in the value of companies and technologies that help reduce CO2 production as these policies continue to be implemented. UK targets Official statistics estimate that there has been a 38% reduction of annual CO2 emissions in comparison to the figures from 1990. The Climate Change Act of 2008 set legally binding targets to push this reduction up to 80% by 2050, and the country is currently on course to achieve this. This currently makes up the UK’s contribution to EU-wide targets of 20% reductions by 2020, though after Brexit the UK may not be a part of this legislation. Other noteworthy legislation Sweden’s ambitious new climate change legislation, The Climate Act, came into force in 2018. It is a complex framework aiming to make the country a net zero emitter of greenhouse gases by 2045. It is one of the most comprehensive and ambitious emissions legislations in the world, and, if successful, it would be a strong example for others to follow. At the other end of the spectrum, highly-publicised changes to US environmental protection policies have seen the government place the importance of American jobs above addressing the issues of climate change. President Donald Trump said he believed that the government can protect American jobs AND regulate climate change, but that the former is more important than the latter. This reflects a larger picture of his government looking to compete more with countries like China, and feeling that climate change laws inhibit that. Switzerland is pursuing a rigorous policy to reduce greenhouse gases with the CO2 Act, aiming to achieve 20% reductions in emissions by 2020 in comparison to their 1990 level. It primarily targets fossil and motor fuels and assigns the federal government to coordinate the changes. When governments fail to meet their targets, they are being increasingly held to account by environmental groups. The changes we are seeing worldwide are being enforced by litigation, which means there are genuine consequences when targets are missed. Silent-Power is a renewable energy technology company working to implement solutions that will help cut carbon emissions in a wide range of ways. Companies like Silent- Power facilitate the changes necessary for countries and companies to meet their emissions targets. What it all means Switzerland and Sweden have been early adopters of policies and regulations regarding climate change, setting an example that the rest of the world is likely to follow in the coming years. Swedish plans to become a zero-emissions country by 2045 are ambitious, but so comprehensively constructed that they show how the entire world could one day function without doing greater harm to the environment. It is necessary to adopt new technologies and infrastructure for countries to achieve radical targets for climate change litigation, and the consequences for failing to do so are very real. We are seeing climate changes drastically, and we are losing animals and landscapes to the degree that our grandchildren may never know a world like the one we now enjoy. Governments are increasingly offering levies to give companies and households the opportunity to engage with new environmentally-friendly technologies through companies like Silent-Power, helping everyone work together to provide hope for the future of the planet. We risk that few hundred years of human interference are destroying what has existed for billions of years — any denial that our interference with our environment is destroying the planet is folly. The good news is that we actually can change our behaviour, but we all need to work together to identify and implement working solutions. |

| body | A Swiss firm is planning to make use of blockchain for clear power funding. Silent Power Projects produces and installs CO2-neutral methanol synthesis crops and it intends to carry this expertise to personal properties by tokenizing funding in its initiatives utilizing blockchain. When methanol is created, the synthesis course of captures CO2 from the atmosphere, together with emissions from waste incineration crops or different CO2 emitting services. The CO2 is certain naturally within the methanol and the ensuing substance can be utilized as gasoline once more, leading to CO2-neutral power that can be utilized extensively.Blockchain goes green The crops use a carbon seize approach that attracts carbon dioxide out of air into methanol that’s prepared for use in power functions. When the gasoline is burned, solely the CO2 that’s launched is similar CO2 that was captured earlier than, making a carbon-neutral ecosystem. https://www.powerengineeringint.com/content/dam/pei/online-articles/2018/08/bitcoin-3137379_1280.jpg The firm is utilizing blockchain to allow people to take part within the development of the inexperienced gasoline economic system by providing tokens to eligible traders. Silent Power chief government Prof Urs A. Weidmann mentioned: “An growing variety of persons are all for collaborating in and supporting the expansion of the renewable power economic system. However, typically practicality and infrastructure points change into a barrier to profitable deployment and development.” Methanol can be utilized in mini energy crops resembling one developed by Silent-Power, referred to as the Econimo. It is a mixed warmth and energy plant and makes use of a microturbine that generates 30 kW energy and 60 kW to warmth or cool water. “The mini energy crops operate independently and could be deployed almost wherever, as an alternative of the standard, centralized, large-scale energy crops that must ship energy a whole bunch of kilometers over the grid,” mentioned Prof. Weidmann. “The Silent Power power idea depends as an alternative on a sturdy distributed community mannequin that entails hundreds of Econimo mini energy crops. This helps to keep away from the transmission losses skilled by massive centralized energy crops.” The first Econimo grew to become operational in 2016 in Switzerland. The firm is trying to construct greater than 2500 Econimo models to be distributed over the subsequent 5 years. Prof Weidmann mentioned these mini energy crops can play the function of energy grid stabilizers for utility firms, compensating for irregularity in provide from different renewable power sources. “Unlike the electrical energy produced by wind or photo voltaic, renewable methanol generally is a secure storage of power over limitless intervals of time.” The world methanol market was estimated at $31 billion in 2016, with development anticipated to proceed. Methanol is the second most traded liquid on this planet after crude oil. Prof. Weidmann based Silent Power in 2002 the imaginative and prescient of making a brand new power provide system that’s sustainable, environment-friendly and CO2 impartial. In 2016, Silent was awarded the Swiss Innovation Award for the manufacturing of CO2-neutral electrical energy from methanol and for the world’s first commissioning of a methanol mini energy plant. If approved by the cabinet, this move will result in an at least 10% reduction in monthly petrol bills and help the government to substantially cut down its oil import bill. A high-level meeting was held in last week of July to discuss the details of the proposal and a senior government official told ET that cabinet secretary PK Sinha is personally monitoring the progress on this front. Niti Aayog has drawn up an ambitious ‘methanol economy’ roadmap. The plan visualises an annual reduction of $100 billion in crude imports by 2030 if the country moves to 15% blended fuel, both for transportation and cooking. At present, vehicles in India use up to 10% ethanol-blended fuel. While ethanol costs Rs 42 a litre, the price of methanol has been estimated at less than Rs 20 a litre. A 15% blend could see petrol prices drop by about 10%. The auto industry was guarded in its response to this proposal. “Industry will have to take R&D projects to understand how much changes are needed in the engine as well as material compatibility… These days most fourwheelers are designed to run on up to 18-20% of blended fuel which currently is ethanol,” said Vishnu Mathur, director general of the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (Siam), the industry body that represent auto companies. Indian Oil Corp R&D director Dr SSV Ramakumar said technically methanol-blended petrol was ‘doable.’ “There are two challenges: the stability of the blended fuel, and its compatibility with the engine. We have a solution for the first and for the second, the oil industry and the auto industry are working together on figuring out a solution,” said Ramakumar, who is also the convener of Niti Aayog’s task force on utilisation of methanol in transport fuel. Another oil industry executive said the bigger challenge is related to supply of methanol. “Importing methanol for blending in transport fuel will be like partly shifting our dependence from the Middle-East crude oil to Chinese methanol,” said this executive. But official sources said methanol can be produced from abundantly available coal and other bio resources in the country besides being manufactured synthetically. This will ensure that the rising demand for methanol could be met going forward. Government is considering roping in foreign companies, either at its own level or through private players, to meet the initial demand for methanol till India becomes self-sufficient over the next four years. The department of science and technology is running three R&D projects worth Rs 100 crore in Pune, Hyderabad and Trichi for commercial production of methanol from coal. Besides, a pilot project for commercial production of methanol is being readied in West Bengal and Jharkhand. Both the state governments have allotted a dedicated coal mine for this purpose. Once the pilot projects are successful, government will roll out the commercial production of methanol from coal. India is the third biggest oil importer globally. Its oil import stands at close to Rs 5 lakh crore with 2,900 crore litres of petrol and 9,000 crore litres of diesel consumed annually. In addition to reducing fuel prices and the country’s annual oil import bill, the use of methanol will also help in reducing pollution. According to Niti Aayog, replacing 20% of crude consumption by methanol will bring down pollution in the country by more than 40%. (With inputs from Sanjeev Chaudhary) |

| title | The Current State of Carbon Capture |
| body | The headlines are dominated by global weather catastrophes, from heat waves to flash flooding. Climate change is something that impacts all of us, no matter where we live or what we believe in. Carbon emissions are a clear source of this problem, and at the moment, not enough is being done to reverse this trend. There are currently 17 large-scale carbon capture plants around the world. These are responsible for sequestering 40 million metric tons of carbon dioxide every year. This amounts to just 0.1% of the total global emissions. It is clear that the technology needs to scale up quickly if we are to see any positive environmental impact from this process. According to the International Energy Agency, we need to sequester around 6 billion metric tonnes of CO2 by 2050 in order to see any impact. At present, much of the carbon capture process focuses on capturing CO2 from large point sources and then storing it somewhere so that it doesn’t enter the atmosphere. This often involves pumping it into underground geological reservoirs including the seabed and depleted oil reserves. Many people are asking if we put so much effort into capturing the CO2, wouldn’t it make more sense to put it to good use? How does carbon capture work? In its simplest form, carbon capture works by trapping CO2 at the source, moving it to a storage location and then isolating it so that it never enters the atmosphere. It’s a complex process, but it does result in greener energy production. Storage vs reuse One of the biggest environmental arguments raging today surrounds the choice to store the captured CO2 or reuse it. Captured CO2 can be used to create Methanol which is a clean energy which can be used in place to fuel in internal combustion engines. We could essentially trap the emissions from fossil fuel powered plants and convert this into a green fuel to power our cars. The process is relatively new, but in early tests, scientists were able to convert 79% of carbon dioxide captured from the atmosphere into methanol using hydrogen. For companies, the biggest impact this would have would be on their carbon credits status. Carbon credits allow companies to offset their own emissions by investing in green initiatives which help to reduce carbon emissions. At the moment, many companies choose to invest in green technology in developing countries as a way to offset future emissions, but carbon capture could be an alternative to this. Is it viable? The biggest obstacle to carbon capture programmes has always been the cost. Companies would much rather purchase carbon credits to offset their emissions rather than investing in carbon capture programmes. In early 2018, Donald Trump signed a new bill into law that could tip the scales in the opposite direction. The budget bill boost tax credits for companies and organisations that choose to invest in carbon capture. It won’t write off the cost of retrofitting old factories, but it will significantly lower the cost. This is the first time that carbon capture has been a commercially viable investment and this should help to encourage more companies to take the plunge. The tax credit will add up to $50 for every metric tonne of CO2 captured and stored and $35 for every tonne put to work in other ways. This is an improvement on the previous $20 and $10 tax credit before the bill came into law. It is clear that carbon capture is required if we are to take control of the environment and prevent global temperatures from continuing to rise. By incentivising carbon capture programmes and increased the production of methanol fuel from carbon, we should see significant environmental impact which will benefit generations to come. | title | Fuelling the future with a renewable energy ecosystem — One that’s sustainable and environmentally friendly |
| body | Silent Power Projects Ltd. (“Silent”), has officially announced today an Initial Coin Offering (ICO ), to raise funds for the production of their Methanol Synthesis Units which are based on a new technology introduced in 2017. “I believe that the time is now to reshape the energy of the future in a CO2-neutral way. I firmly believe Methanol Synthesis is the technology which will bring this about on a global scale” - Prof. Dr. sc. techn. ETH Urs. The ICO will run from November 1st — November 31st, with the pre-ICO running from September 1st — October 31st. Tokens are 0.15 CHF each and the hardcap is set at 28,000,000 CHF. Imagine heating your house in winter, with Methanol produced during summer. Imagine fuelling your car with your own fuel, produced on site with solar power harnessed on your roof! | title | The New Role Of ICOs In Green Investing |
| body | If there are two things causing seismic shifts in the world today, it’s Blockchain and green technology. It was only a matter of time before we would find a way to bring these two revolutionary concepts together. There is a growing trend for using blockchain technology and ICOs (initial coin offerings) in order to raise much-needed funds to develop sustainable and green energy markets. The Luxembourg Stock Exchange (LuxSE) recently became the first stock exchange in the world to offer a dedicated green platform. The LuxSE is unique in that it operates in a small country and has only 25 local equity listings, yet it is fast becoming a world powerhouse in listing international securities, with over 36,000 securities from over 2,500 issuers in over 100 countries. The LuxSE now lists 50% of the world’s green bonds. There is a clear demand for investment in green technologies and the LuxSE is ensuring that those who want to get on board can do so in a responsible way. There is a strict eligibility criterion for listing on the Luxembourg Green Exchange and investors have access to all documentation about the underlying green or sustainable products. Following on from this move, there is a growing trend for green companies to seek investment through the use of ICOs or STOs. Initial Coin Offerings in their simplest form are a form of crowdfunding through the tokenization of assets, which can help to avoid many of the restrictive regulations a company might face while working within the existing legal framework applicable to fundraising. ICOs have come under fire in recent months due to the high number of scams and failed ICOs which have led to investors losing money. However, like the technology they are investing in, green ICOs are proving to be far more sustainable. In February 2018, WePower announced that it has successfully raised $40 million from an ICO for its green energy and sustainable living projects. With 22,933 contributors, it was the largest ICO in the energy space of all time. Another company pioneering the green energy ICO space is Silent-Power Ltd. This award-winning company has developed mini power plants that produce power, heat and cold using methanol. This simple alcohol molecule can be synthesized out of hydrogen and CO2. If renewable power is used to create hydrogen out of water, and CO2 is abstracted from flue gas from an industry burning a renewable fuel (like wood or waste), the result will be methanol with a negative carbon footprint, meaning it is actually a CO2 storage. Using this “green Methanol” enables a carbon-neutral energy supply. Another approach to using Blockchain for green investments can be seen in the model adopted by Swytch Energy. Swytch Energy uses Blockchain technology to reward the companies and individuals that reduce their carbon footprint the most. Using machine learning and artificial intelligence, the system can work out how much carbon has been displaced and rewards account holders accordingly. Other companies successfully using Blockchain technology to combat climate change include NewEra Energy, which is using the Blockchain to connect carbon initiatives around the world to fix a fractured data problem. And finally, Greeneum is a Blockchain-powered organisation aiming to incentivise green energy production by offering a decentralised platform for energy trading. The common interest of these green energy initiatives is to push the energy transition forward. But there are so many obstacles they are facing during fundraising. First, there is a lack of transparent data available, which makes proving claims about the benefits of green energy more difficult. Second, the energy industry of today is primarily chasing after subsidies and the development strategies of the big players are directed by the outlook on subsidies and taxations. New concepts have to pass a rocky road, as they have to provide working proof of technology within a heavily controlled market, while still being excluded from subsidies until they can deliver proof of their claimed advantages. Third, economies of scale apply especially in the energy sector, a large central power system reaches a higher efficiency and lower specific costs than several smaller but decentralised ones. New technical pilot installations however have to start small, in a specific application, and have to be a very wisely chosen investment. With world powers such as the United States slashing funding to their own Environmental Protection Agency, a decentralised system is needed in order for interested parties to share data and build a worldwide picture of energy use and carbon emissions. ICOs and blockchain technology could be one solution for getting around the issues of a fragmented energy sector and individual country regulations. ICOs often operate outside of the usual financial institutions and can offer more long-term returns than current investment models which focus on short-term profits. "title": "The New Role Of ICOs In Green Investing",
"body": "If there are two things causing seismic shifts in the world today, it’s Blockchain and green technology. It was only a matter of time before we would find a way to bring these two revolutionary concepts together. There is a growing trend for using blockchain technology and ICOs (initial coin offerings) in order to raise much-needed funds to develop sustainable and green energy markets.\n\nThe Luxembourg Stock Exchange (LuxSE) recently became the first stock exchange in the world to offer a dedicated green platform. The LuxSE is unique in that it operates in a small country and has only 25 local equity listings, yet it is fast becoming a world powerhouse in listing international securities, with over 36,000 securities from over 2,500 issuers in over 100 countries. The LuxSE now lists 50% of the world’s green bonds.\n\nThere is a clear demand for investment in green technologies and the LuxSE is ensuring that those who want to get on board can do so in a responsible way. There is a strict eligibility criterion for listing on the Luxembourg Green Exchange and investors have access to all documentation about the underlying green or sustainable products.\n\nFollowing on from this move, there is a growing trend for green companies to seek investment through the use of ICOs or STOs. However, like the technology they are investing in, green ICOs are proving to be far more sustainable.\n\nIn February 2018, WePower announced that it has successfully raised $40 million from an ICO for its green energy and sustainable living projects. With 22,933 contributors, it was the largest ICO in the energy space of all time.\n\nAnother company pioneering the green energy ICO space is Silent-Power Ltd. Using this “green Methanol” enables a carbon-neutral energy supply.\n\nAnother approach to using Blockchain for green investments can be seen in the model adopted by Swytch Energy. Swytch Energy uses Blockchain technology to reward the companies and individuals that reduce their carbon footprint the most. Using machine learning and artificial intelligence, the system can work out how much carbon has been displaced and rewards account holders accordingly.\n\nOther companies successfully using Blockchain technology to combat climate change include NewEra Energy, which is using the Blockchain to connect carbon initiatives around the world to fix a fractured data problem. And finally, Greeneum is a Blockchain-powered organisation aiming to incentivise green energy production by offering a decentralised platform for energy trading.\n\nThe common interest of these green energy initiatives is to push the energy transition forward. But there are so many obstacles they are facing during fundraising. First, there is a lack of transparent data available, which makes proving claims about the benefits of green energy more difficult. | title | Blockchain goes green: tokens for low carbon investment |
| body | A Swiss company is planning to use blockchain for clean energy investment. Silent Power Projects produces and installs CO2-neutral methanol synthesis plants and it intends to bring this technology to private homes by tokenizing investment in its projects using blockchain. When methanol is created, the synthesis process captures CO2 from the environment, including emissions from waste incineration plants or other CO2 emitting facilities. The CO2 is bound naturally in the methanol and the resulting substance can be used as fuel again, resulting in CO2-neutral energy that can be used widely.Blockchain goes green The plants use a carbon capture technique that draws carbon dioxide out of air into methanol that is ready to be used in energy applications. When the fuel is burned, only the CO2 that is released is the same CO2 that was captured before, creating a carbon-neutral ecosystem. https://aemstatic-ww2.azureedge.net/content/dam/pei/online-articles/2018/08/bitcoin-3137379_1280.jpg The company is using blockchain to enable individuals to participate in the growth of the green fuel economy by offering tokens to eligible investors. Silent Power chief executive Prof Urs A. Weidmann said: “An increasing number of people are interested in participating in and supporting the growth of the renewable energy economy. However, often practicality and infrastructure issues become a barrier to successful deployment and growth.” Methanol can be used in mini power plants such as one developed by Silent-Power, called the Econimo. It is a combined heat and power plant and uses a microturbine that generates 30 kW power and 60 kW to heat or cool water. “The mini power plants function independently and can be deployed nearly anywhere, instead of the traditional, centralized, large-scale power plants that have to send power hundreds of kilometers over the grid,” said Prof. Weidmann. “The Silent Power energy concept relies instead on a robust distributed network model that involves thousands of Econimo mini power plants. This helps to avoid the transmission losses experienced by large centralized power plants.” The first Econimo became operational in 2016 in Switzerland. The company is looking to build more than 2500 Econimo units to be distributed over the next five years. Prof Weidmann said these mini power plants can play the role of power grid stabilizers for utility companies, compensating for irregularity in supply from other renewable energy sources. “Unlike the electricity produced by wind or solar, renewable methanol can be a stable storage of energy over unlimited periods of time.” The global methanol market was estimated at $31 billion in 2016, with growth expected to continue. Methanol is the second most traded liquid in the world after crude oil. Prof. Weidmann founded Silent Power in 2002 the vision of creating a new energy supply system that is sustainable, efficient and CO2 neutral. In 2016, Silent was awarded the Swiss Innovation Award for the production of CO2-neutral electricity from methanol and for the world’s first commissioning of a methanol mini power plant. |

| title | The Rise of the Methanol Economy |
| body | The late Professor George Olah put a name to a novel concept when he launched his book “Beyond Oil and Gas: The Methanol Economy” in 2006. Coming from a Nobel Laureate in the field of chemistry the book attracted lots of attention. Professor Olah’s book describes a future where fossil fuels, in their many uses, are replaced with methanol. As the professor points out, methanol is an extremely effective fuel, we have examples of this dating back to the 1940s, and it’s still a popular additive for use in gasoline. https://cdn-images-1.medium.com/max/1000/1*5O2gzBrpAqmgyuh6tKI52A.jpeg Methanol has already replaced the role of hydrocarbons sourced from oil in the production of a wide range of products through the production of plastics and synthetic rubber from olefins. The production of this product category is one of the largest uses for methanol today. For now, most methanol is made from non-renewable sources, but it can just as easily be created with renewable energy through methanol synthesis. This process is already proven, with several methanol synthesis plants already operating. The synthesis plants use electricity to capture CO2 emissions and transform it into methanol. If the electricity used is sourced from renewable energy the methanol produced will effectively reduce carbon emissions. In fact, as the technology evolves and CO2 can be extracted directly from the air the methanol economy could become completely sustainable and imitate the natural cycle of CO2 usage that exists in nature. Professor Olah was a realist who understood that change is a process. He reiterated that the methanol economy can, and indeed must, be introduced in a flexible and gradual manner that works with existing practices and infrastructures. Current practices show that methanol is well suited for a gradual implementation within the existing fuel and energy infrastructure. Methanol can be produced from both renewable and non-renewable sources. This makes methanol potentially easily available in virtually any location, which is an important point for a universal fuel. It can, and is now commonly used as an additive to current fuels. This means that a gradual realization of some of the important benefits of methanol are available also in the short term. Methanol is relatively stable and is easy to store and distribute through existing channels of distribution. Methanol has the potential to help us control CO2 emissions which most of us agree is important for the survival of our planet. There are also a number of important short term benefits from using methanol as a fuel. Emissions from burning methanol are simply water and CO2, which can help substantially improve quality of life in inner city neighbourhoods currently suffering from emissions from cars and heating. As doctor Olah has pointed out there is much to be done, and it is impossible to do all at once. Silent-Power AG, a sister company of Silent has been getting engaged in the rapidly developing, and increasingly financially attractive, methanol economy. The company has identified the need for methanol demand generation as a key to achieving the methanol economy. Higher demand drives supply, which again leads to wider availability and adoption. The company has therefore invented the Econimo. This is a decentralized network of mini power plants powered by methanol. The Power plants are operating at roughly 85% efficiency, and avoid transmission losses. The power plants capture the heat from the electricity production to be used for heating, water heating or cooling. |
