| title | Retirement Resilience? - Pension changes brought a whole new range of options to consider |
| body | Unadvised retirees who are now able to dip into their pension are having to return to work to cope with juggling their finances, according to a new report[1]. Pension freedoms have given individuals control over how to spend their retirement savings, but a number of unintended consequences have emerged. Since rules governing how pensions can be taken were dramatically relaxed in 2015, more than a million over-55s have gone on a freedom-fuelled spending spree. The pension changes brought a whole new range of options to consider. Individuals now have to think about whether they want an annuity, drawdown, cash or a combination of options; when to access their pension; if it is better to use savings first before drawing their pension; and so on. However, it seems many don’t really understand the consequences of these options. As a result, more than £23 billion has been ‘cashed out’ from the nation’s pension pots via more than five million individual payments. The findings show the increase in retirees returning to the workforce since the introduction of pension freedoms four years ago is due to the number of options available and the lack of professional financial advice. Facing financial pressure A quarter of retirees who have returned to work since April 2015 say they were faced with financial pressure. Figures from HM Revenue & Customs show around one million over-55s withdrew a 25% tax-free lump sum from their pension in the last year, up 23% points from the 12 months prior. There is a lot to think about when you’re planning for retirement, and your circumstances will change over time, which is why it is important to obtain professional financial advice. There’s no doubt the pension freedoms have been hugely popular, but for some retirees they have come at a high price. People now face more complicated decisions in retirement, and it’s clear not everyone is getting it right. Scale of the problem The figures also show other reasons for returning to work that include reigniting a sense of purpose and boosting social relationships. A report from the Pensions Policy Institute shows women particularly are continuing to struggle with pension savings. The average pension for a woman is currently £100,000 lower than for men. Women’s pension savings have historically been impacted by a combination of the gender pay gap, part-time working and the increased burden of childcare costs, but this figure lays bare the scale of the problem. Time to convert your pension pot into retirement income? When you’re coming up to retirement, you have lots of decisions to make, not least how to convert your pension pot into retirement income. With more freedom comes more choice, and it’s important to obtain professional financial advice to help you decide what to do with your pension pot. To review your options, please contact Garden Wall – we look forward to hearing from you. [1] All figures, unless otherwise stated, are from YouGov Plc. Total sample size was 2,028 adults, who have accessed their DC pension since 1 April 2015. Fieldwork was undertaken between 18 and 29 April 2019. The survey was carried out online for Zurich. |

| title | Retirement Resilience? - Taking the reins and having more control over your pension pot |
| body | https://www.gardenwallfp.co.uk/post/retirement-resilience-taking-the-reins-and-having-more-control-over-your-pension-pot Saving for retirement is one of our greatest financial priorities, especially as life expectancy is growing and retirements are likely to last longer. It may be the case that you’d prefer to take the reins and have more control over your pension pot. For appropriate investors, one option to consider is a Self-Invested Personal Pension (SIPP). Please note that a SIPP is a type of Personal Pension, and the rules as to how much you can contribute to a SIPP are the same as a Personal Pension. Also, when it comes to taking the pension, the same rules apply to both a SIPP and a Personal Pension. Saving discipline A SIPP is a tax-efficient wrapper for your pension investments and gives you control of your pension, whereas most members of a company pension scheme have very little control and almost no idea where their pension money is invested. SIPPs enforce saving discipline until retirement since you cannot withdraw your money early. Also, with many of the UK’s largest companies closing their final salary schemes to all members, many members now have to look at taking their pensions into their own hands. You can make both regular and one-off payments into your SIPP, and even putting a small amount away early will make a difference to how much you will eventually have to fund your retirement. Extra flexibility Once you reach 55, you can access your whole pension pot. You decide how and when to use the fund built up in your SIPP to provide you with an income. You can take up to 25% of your fund as a tax-free lump sum and use the balance to provide you with a pension through income withdrawal from your SIPP, or through the purchase of an annuity. You can also take a series of lump sums from your SIPP – it’s flexible. SIPPs can be opened by almost anyone under the age of 75 living in the UK. You can open a SIPP for yourself or for someone else, such as a child or grandchild. Even if you’ve already retired, you can still open a SIPP and take advantage of the extra flexibility that it gives you over your pension savings in retirement – but you may be limited by how much you can pay into it. Investment control SIPPs offer a wider investment choice than most traditional pensions based on investments approved by HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC). They give you the chance to pick exactly where you want your money to go and enable you to choose and change your investments when you want, giving you control of your pension and how it is organised. Most SIPPs allow you to select from a range of assets, including: Unit trusts Investment trusts Government securities Insurance company funds Traded endowment policies Some National Savings & Investment products Deposit accounts with banks and building societies Commercial property (such as offices, shops or factory premises) Individual stocks and shares quoted on a recognised UK or overseas stock exchange Tax treatment You receive tax relief upfront from the Government when you make contributions, which can feel like the Government is giving you money to save for your retirement. Currently, an investor can receive up to 45% tax relief when they make a personal contribution to a personal pension such as a SIPP, with 20% paid by HMRC to the pension and any higher and additional-rate tax relief reclaimable via your tax return. The tax treatment of pensions depends on your individual circumstances and is subject to change in future. Time to take control of your retirement plans for the future? A SIPP is not right for everyone, but the freedom it offers you compared to a traditional pension could far outweigh the extra time taken to run your own pension. To find out more about setting up a SIPP, please contact Garden Wall and we’ll arrange a meeting to discuss your requirements – we look forward to hearing from you. |

| body | https://www.gardenwallfp.co.uk/post/wealth-preservation-have-you-considered-these-6-things-to-help-preserve-your-wealth Whether you have earned your wealth, inherited it or made shrewd investments, you will want to ensure that as little of it as possible ends up in the hands of HM Revenue & Customs. With careful planning and professional financial advice, it is possible to take preventative action to either reduce or mitigate a person’s beneficiaries’ Inheritance Tax bill – or mitigate it altogether. These are some of the main areas to consider. 1. Make a Will A vital element of effective estate preservation is to make a Will. According to a YouGov survey, almost 60% of all UK adults do not have a Will. This is mainly due to apathy but also a result of the fact that many people feel uncomfortable talking about issues surrounding death. Making a Will ensures an individual’s assets are distributed in accordance with their wishes. This is particularly important if the person has a spouse or registered civil partner. Even though there is no Inheritance Tax payable between both parties, there could be tax payable if one person dies intestate without a Will. Without a Will in place, an estate falls under the laws of intestacy – and this means the estate may not be divided up in the way the deceased person wanted it to be. 2. Make allowable gifts A person can give cash or gifts worth up to £3,000 in total each tax year, and these will be exempt from Inheritance Tax when they die. They can carry forward any unused part of the £3,000 exemption to the following year, but they must use it or it will be lost. Parents can give cash or gifts worth up to £5,000 when a child gets married, grandparents up to £2,500, and anyone else up to £1,000. Small gifts of up to £250 a year can also be made to as many people as an individual likes. 3. Give away assets Parents are increasingly providing children with funds to help them buy their own home. This can be done through a gift, and provided the parents survive for seven years after making it, the money automatically moves outside of their estate for Inheritance Tax calculations, irrespective of size. 4. Make use of trusts Assets can be put in an appropriate trust, thereby no longer forming part of the estate. There are many types of trust available that, if appropriate, usually involve parents (settlors) investing a sum of money into a trust. The trust has to be set up with trustees – a suggested minimum of two – whose role is to ensure that on the death of the settlers, the investment is paid out according to the settlors’ wishes. In most cases, this will be to children or grandchildren. The most widely used trust is a discretionary trust and can be set up in a way that the settlors (parents) still have access to income or parts of the capital. It can seem daunting to put money away in a trust, but they can be unwound in the event of a family crisis and monies returned to the settlors via the beneficiaries. 5. The income over expenditure rule As well as putting lump sums into an appropriate trust, people can also make monthly contributions into certain savings or insurance policies and put them into an appropriate trust. The monthly contributions are potentially subject to Inheritance Tax, but if the person can prove that these payments are not compromising their standard of living, they are exempt. 6. Provide for the tax If a person is not in a position to take avoiding action, an alternative approach is to make provision for paying Inheritance Tax when it is due. The tax has to be paid within six months of death (interest is added after this time). Because probate must be granted before any money can be released from an estate, the executor may have to borrow money or use their own funds to pay the Inheritance Tax bill. This is where life assurance policies written in an appropriate trust come into their own. A life assurance policy is taken out on both a husband’s and wife’s life, with the proceeds payable only on second death. The amount of cover should be equal to the expected Inheritance Tax liability. By putting the policy in an appropriate trust, it means it does not form part of the estate. The proceeds can then be used to pay any Inheritance Tax bill straightaway without the need for the executors to borrow. Contact Garden Wall today for a holistic review. |

"body": "\nhttps://www.gardenwallfp.co.uk/post/wealth-preservation-have-you-considered-these-6-things-to-help-preserve-your-wealth\nWhether you have earned your wealth, inherited it or made shrewd investments, you will want to ensure that as little of it as possible ends up in the hands of HM Revenue & Customs. With careful planning and professional financial advice, it is possible to take preventative action to either reduce or mitigate a person’s beneficiaries’ Inheritance Tax bill – or mitigate it altogether. These are some of the main areas to consider.\n1. Make a Will\nA vital element of effective estate preservation is to make a Will. Without a Will in place, an estate falls under the laws of intestacy – and this means the estate may not be divided up in the way the deceased person wanted it to be.\n2. Make allowable gifts\nA person can give cash or gifts worth up to £3,000 in total each tax year, and these will be exempt from Inheritance Tax when they die. They can carry forward any unused part of the £3,000 exemption to the following year, but they must use it or it will be lost.\nParents can give cash or gifts worth up to £5,000 when a child gets married, grandparents up to £2,500, and anyone else up to £1,000. Small gifts of up to £250 a year can also be made to as many people as an individual likes.\n3. | title | Financial Resilience - Cohabiting families risking their families future? |
| body | The lifestyle of our loved ones may be seriously compromised if we die. However, very worryingly, more than 2.4 million cohabiting families across the UK - the fastest-growing family type in the country - do not have life insurance, potentially leaving their loved ones open to financial problems once they pass away, according to analysis[1]. The research found that 73% of cohabiting families – couples living as married – do not have a life insurance policy, compared to 56% of married couples. As cohabiting families do not yet enjoy the same legal rights as married couples, this is leaving thousands of families at risk should the worst happen and their partner dies. Cohabiting families have been the fastest-growing household type over the last decade. The latest figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) show that the number has more than doubled from 1.5 million to 3.3 million since 1996. Furthermore, according to the latest ONS divorce and marriage statistics, the number of couples getting married has decreased by more than 6% since 2012, potentially due to the rise in couples choosing to cohabit. Not prepared for the worst At a regional level, cohabiting families in London, the West Midlands and the East of England are the least likely of all regions in the country to have life insurance. 87% of those living as married in London, 79% in the West Midlands and the same number in the East of England are not prepared for the worst, simply by not having a life insurance policy in place. On the other hand, cohabiting families in Wales, the North East and Scotland are the most likely of all regions to have life insurance. Despite this, 68% of those living as married in Wales, the same number in the North East and 52% in Scotland still do not have life insurance cover. Encouragingly, the region with the most cohabiting families – the South East – also has one of the highest proportions of those having a life insurance policy in place. Choosing cohabitation over tying the knot The findings show that marriage may be on the cards for some, but many people are now choosing cohabitation over tying the knot, and this may well be the case for the rest of their lives. Whether we marry or live together, the needs of loved ones left behind shouldn’t be overlooked. Life insurance can ensure the right money can go to the right person at the right time. Further research found that women insure themselves for up to 30% less than men. The average level of protection that men insure themselves for stands at more than £210,000, whereas women tend to insure themselves for just under £150,000. As cohabiting families do not yet enjoy the same legal rights as married couples, this is leaving thousands of families at risk should the worst happen and their partner dies. Protection matters Most of us insure our cars, our homes and even our mobile phones – but what about helping to protect our loved ones? Help protect your family and give yourself peace of mind with the right level of life insurance. To review your protection needs, please contact Garden Wall today. Source data: [1] UK life insurance company, Zurich. All figures, unless otherwise stated, are from YouGov Plc. Total sample size was 2,039 adults. Fieldwork was undertaken between 20 and 21 July 2017. The survey was carried out online. The figures have been weighted and are representative of all GB adults (aged 18+). | title | Financial Resilience - How prepared are you for any financial shocks? |
| body | Over three million working couples are classed as 'double income, no option' (DINOs), which means they are potentially financially vulnerable if one of the two loses their earnings. The typical household today looks very different from the traditional image of a working family made up of one primary breadwinner and one homemaker. Instead, nowadays many households rely on two incomes to maintain their lifestyle, or even just to get by. Of the two thirds of Britons who are living as part of a couple, half (51%) are both currently working. Yet, without adequate savings or protection insurance, millions could be at risk financially if one of the main earners was unable to work for a period of time. Dependent on two incomes Research by LV= has found that there are 3.2 million working couples in Britain that would be classed as DINOs. This means they are dependent on two incomes to make ends meet, and would struggle to cope if they lost one of their incomes. The Money Advice Service (MAS) recommends the provision of 90 days’ worth of outgoings in savings to protect against a financial shock. The lack of savings may be down to people simply not being able to afford to put money aside. A quarter (27%) of working couples surveyed say their double wage isn’t stretching as far as it did this time last year. However, not having a back-up source of money leaves many couples at a high risk of financial difficulty if one person couldn’t work for a period of time. Level of financial pressure The level of financial pressure is also clear in the numbers who anticipate they’ll be working for many years to come. Of couples who both work, three in five (58%) wouldn’t choose to work if they didn’t have to, while over half (54%) say the same of their partner. Three in ten (30%) people in a working couple expect that both they and their partner will have to work until retirement to make ends meet, while one in five (21%) think both of them will actually need to work throughout retirement. Millions of couples need both incomes to pay the bills, with a significant proportion saying they’d have to make major changes if they had to rely on one income. And the impact of losing an income is not just financial. Two in five (42%) people in a couple say that if one of them couldn’t work, it would strain their relationship. Few have income protection Despite the reliance so many households have on both incomes, worryingly few have income protection, leaving them vulnerable if one member of the household was unable to work for a period of time. Three in five (59%) say that neither they nor their partner has any form of income protection. If your household is reliant on two incomes to make ends meet, it’s important to consider how you would survive financially and emotionally if you were forced to live off one income. With so many households now relying on two salaries to get by, it has never been more important for couples to protect their joint incomes. Help to support you financially Income Protection (also known as ‘IP insurance’) is a form of insurance that helps support you financially if you have time off work and suffer a loss of earnings because of injury or illness. However, it is important to remember that Income Protection only covers you if you’re unable to work due to illness or injury – it does not pay out if you are made redundant. This type of insurance covers most illnesses that leave you unable to work. What that means, exactly, depends on your individual policy. For example, it may cover you if you are unable to work due to a stress-related illness or a serious heart condition. Much-needed boost to your financial resilience Income Protection is one way for people to equip themselves should they find themselves unable to work for a period of time. It can be an affordable and valuable safety net that can provide a much-needed boost to their financial resilience. If you have any concerns or would like to review your options, please contact Garden Wall today – we look forward to hearing from you. | title | What is a Will Trust? |
| body | Making a Will is the first step to ensuring that your estate is shared out as you want it when you die. If you die without a Will, you are said to have died intestate. Your estate is distributed according to a pre-set formula (rules of intestacy) and you have no say over who receives what. There is no flexibility or discretion for their variation by the person dealing with the estate. Your Will can be used to create a Will Trust (also known as a 'testamentary trust'). The type of Trust and the beneficiaries will be subject to the terms of your Will. A Will Trust such as a Immediate Post-Death Interest Trust (IPDI) can be created through the Will and can provide a surviving spouse (the life tenant) with an income or use of property until their death. On the death of the life tenant, the assets of the Trust pass to the other beneficiaries. For example, a husband via his Will could put assets into an IPDI Trust with directions that his wife should receive income for life and the assets pass to their children on her death. The wife would be the life tenant and the children the remaindermen. When you set up a trust it is a legal arrangement and you will need to appoint 'trustees' who are responsible for holding and managing the assets. Trustees have a responsibility to manage the trust on behalf of, and in the best interest of, the beneficiaries in accordance with the trust terms. The trustees, in the example above, can only pay the the life tenant income generated from the trust, the trustees cannot supplement it from capital. https://www.gardenwallfp.co.uk/post/what-is-a-will-trust Contact Garden Wall for a holistic review of your Will and Testament needs.
