No paints! It definitely took me some time but I am glad I could come up with this. The reason this piece of work is very close to my heart is because I never sketched it on a paper. It would have given me a better idea of what it would look like. But what I finally got was completely raw and a reflection of what I felt. The small elements like 'peace', 'freedom', 'space'.. these are what one desires in life. And I am happy that I drew something that came straight from my heart. \n\nPlease have a look at this picture. I didn't have proper equipment. Beautiful henna is done on the bride’s hand a day before the wedding. The bride and the groom are bathed in turmeric 2 days prior to the wedding as a part of a beautiful ritual that tends to protect them from the evil. And later, on the day of the wedding, the bride and the groom take 7 rounds around the holy fire and then take their vows to protect each other for the entire lifetime. The beauty of each tradition is heart-warming. \nBut all these rituals are smothered with the need to flaunt, until what we only see are the group of middle-aged ladies talking about their 24-carat gold jewelry, young women dazzling in their bedecked lehengas, young men trying their best to impress those young women, and the newly-wed couple striking queer poses as a favour to their social media followers. More than the beauty of rituals, people these days swoon over the materialistic parade of celebrations. Just to redefine the boisterous affair of an Indian wedding as a royal celebration, people fritter the money away and call it a fairy-tale wedding. \nCan’t believe?       "body": "“Writing poems won’t earn you a living.” \n“You are just wasting your time on Instagram.”\nThere were a lot of suggestions and opinions thrown my way when I started posting my poems on Instagram. Some appreciated what I did and some were just puzzled and posed questions like “what would you get posting your work on Instagram? Will you be able to earn doing this?”\nPeople were right. When have people been wrong? Never. \nBut I kept doing what I did. I wrote and wrote and wrote. I put my words on display. I exposed my vulnerability. \nI was an Engineer. I still am, at least that’s what my degree says. But I introduce myself as a writer to everyone because I got to choose writing as my profession, and thanks to Instagram (and to my will to keep heading forward). \nNow here is how my life changed...\nIt was not a sunny day. I didn’t almost hop while walking. I didn’t smile at people. I wasn’t in my best of clothes. And, I never knew that a phone call would turn all these negatives into positives. An acquaintance on the phone asked if I wanted to become a full-time writer. Apparently, his boss read a couple of my poems on Instagram and was beyond impressed. I was dumbfounded at the question and in no more than a couple of seconds, I found my lips moving to say (read as scream) YES. \nHe then told me that his boss who runs a digital marketing company requires a skilled content writer. I believed that I was skilled but at anything more than poetry? I wasn’t sure. But in no time, I was called for the interview. I appeared for it and got asked for a portfolio. I didn’t have any. I didn’t have anything that would serve as a testimonial. I showed the interviewer my poems on Instagram, and she didn’t seem unclear before offering me a handsome package as a permanent content writing. \nIt has been 8 months and I can confidently say that I am skilled at writing more than just poetry. My boss loves my work. And I love my job. \nI didn’t need a portfolio to prove my skills, and you don’t need one too. I persisted with I loved and you can too. It was poetry for me and it can be anything else for you.
