titleTravel Guide: Boulogne sur Mer, France
body![1_qGAwK9Z2wOcYy739KCwFTw.jpeg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmZE5TswFqhT3ZMf7ccR7mKjxgBAFUxMJdyJumjLgqUkvc/1_qGAwK9Z2wOcYy739KCwFTw.jpeg) It was a bright, blue, sunny summer’s morning in London as I boarded the fast train from St Pancras station to Dover. My first ferry journey to France. P&O Ferries operate a shuttle bus from the train station at Dover to the ferry terminal. You should take this. It was such a nice day that I decided to walk — it was a bit further than I expected but I still made it to the port 30 minutes before departure time. Unfortunately that wasn’t quite early enough — because of security and immigration requirements, passenger boarding is locked down 45 minutes prior to departure. Luckily the helpful staff were able to switch me onto the next ferry departing an hour later, and the Pride of Kent soon had me sailing smoothly across the English Channel, leaving the chalky white cliffs of Dover in our wake. The seaside village of Boulogne sur Mer is a short drive from Calais — you can follow the coastal road and on a clear day possibly glimpse the English coast across the water. One of the main attractions of Boulogne sur Mer is Nausicaá — the Centre National de la Mer. Nausicaá is an aquarium and education centre, 13 million visitors have passed through its doors since opening in 1991. I really like aquariums, but to describe Nausicaá simply as an aquarium isn’t really doing it justice. This is a big operation, with a strong focus on education and sustainability — including a guide to buying fish when dining-out that prioritises local and seasonal fish. The exhibits are presented in logical groupings — aquatic environments sensitively created, and giving the visitor a unique opportunity to view the ecosystems teeming within our oceans. My favourite resident was a young loggerhead turtle (born in captivity and soon to be fitted with a tracking beacon and released into the Mediterranean), although I also loved the Sea Dragons from Australia — intricate tiny creatures from a different universe. Sharks, penguins, and sea lions are all crowd-pleasers. This is a popular destination for English school-children on their first big excursion. It’s an easy day-trip. However I was staying on to explore more of the Boulonnais region. The next morning I walked down to the port and watched the boats of Boulogne’s fishing fleet returning to the quay. Boulogne is home to France’s largest fishing fleet with 150 boats. The crews seemed happy with their catch, busily throwing back anything too small, or using hammers to dislodge recalcitrant crabs who are too time-consuming to untangle. The best of the catch is sold direct to restaurants and the public from the quayside market stalls operated by the families of the boat owners — the rest of the catch is handed over to the adjacent processing plant. Like many traditional industries, family is central to the fabric of the fishing fleet. Boats are named after the children of the boat owner — or religious saints if there are no children — and each new boat is carefully christened before it’s allowed to embark out to sea. From the port I jumped on a boat tour — the Florelle. I’m not usually a fan of boat tours, but the weather was so good it was easy just to kick back in the sun and enjoy the steady motion of the boat. This region is known as the Opal Coast because when rising or setting the sun creates unique colour effects in the water, making this a favoured destination for painters. For lunch, I walked into the big industrial estate on the port where the food processing plants are based. Somewhere in the middle is Brasserie Le Chatillon, which had been recommended to me. Unless you had some local knowledge you’d never find this place, but it’s definitely worth tracking down. The brasserie opens for breakfast and then closes about 3PM. The clientele is a combination of factory workers eating sandwiches and beer at the bar, to local businessmen sitting down to a full lunch. The food is very good (mainly seafood of course), and there’s a great atmosphere. To walk off our lunch, I tackled the coastal walk from Boulogne to neighbouring Wimereaux. This takes a good hour, but is worth doing. I took a taxi back to Boulogne and made the most of the last of the day’s sun by working on my tan on the beach. For my final day in Boulogne sur Mer, I headed to the markets in the square in front of the St Nicolas church. The markets are held each Wednesday and Saturday, also on Sundays on the quayside. With some trepidation, I tried some horse sausage — rich, meaty, and quite tasty. About 3,000 horses are butchered each week in this region to meet consumer demand. I then walked uphill to the old fortified part of town. This is a fascinating glimpse into the history of this part of the world. The fortifications have been in place in various configurations for the last 2,000 years. Walking around the ramparts gives you sweeping views out to sea as well as inland. You also need to visit the cathedral, with its spectacular dome. I wandered along Rue de Lille and headed back down the hill to the quayside where I ordered some lunch from one of the popular friterie outlets. ‘Delicious!’ I declared, biting enthusiastically into an enormous baguette filled with fries and a sausage. ‘This is a local specialty…’ advised the food vendor. ‘The sausage is called a Frikandel — it’s made from a bit of everything.’ It was very good. The Hitchcock-ian seagulls began to circle, so I quickly finished the baguette and jumped in the car for the short journey back to Calais, and I was soon on to the ferry back to England.

titleMadonna or Whore? It’s complex.
bodyHolly Morgan’s new show celebrates controversial women throughout history ![1_BUrJqD-ev8ZufigUwTVhaA.jpeg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmWhXLzQFLmBhdk4B12iUpwgaz1vE9CQSSPQq66XGC9WWE/1_BUrJqD-ev8ZufigUwTVhaA.jpeg) In her new show Madonna or Whore? Holly Morgan will be channeling controversial women from history and asks the big questions about identity, misogyny, and Madonna. Ahead of opening night, we caught up with Holly Morgan for a behind-the-scenes look at the show: What does the Madonna/Whore complex mean to you? Freud’s concept that straight men split women into two categories of whore or virgin is very much alive and well. I don’t mean that as an attack on straight men who are obviously much less binary in their thinking than that — it’s us, it’s society. We put women into the categories of ‘good’ and ‘bad’ and, when we don’t know which one they fit, in we demonise them. Pop-culture is deeply uncomfortable with sexual women, and that’s why Madonna is such an important pop icon, and one I want to celebrate. Who are the women that you’ll be channelling into your show? It’s only Madonna songs, but we get women from history singing them — including Lilith, the six wives of Henry VIII, the victims of Jack the Ripper, the women of Romantic Comedy, and the Virgin Mary. We also have some cameos from my girls Liza, Shirley, Britney, Celine, Tina, and Nicki. Which is your favourite Madonna song to perform? I’d have to say Like a Prayer. I did it in a school talent show and had no idea about the ‘down on my knees’ implications. Which character from Sex and the City are you? I think there’s some awful theory that Carrie’s psyche is actually made up of all of them, and that’s why the others have such clearly drawn character traits — bossy, fussy, whorey. SATC was a landmark show for women, and one that I cherish dearly, but I mention it in the show as it does conform to some of the Madonna/Whore stereotypes. That being said, it was doing a great job with what it could do at the time for women on screen. Short answer — I’m think of myself as a Miranda with shades of Samantha, but my friends tell me that I’m a blend of Anthony and Stamford. How many wig changes will there be in this show? A disappointingly-low four. Much less than my last show, but this time my accompanist Tom — who will be playing Sigmund Freud — will be donning the wigs as well. What do you hope that people feel when watching this show? I hope that they’ll feel angry at the political situation we’ve all found ourselves in, but hopefully inspired by Madonna’s example to not let society box you in by their shitty rules. What next for Holly Morgan? We’ve got a plan to take the show to Edinburgh, which is obviously a huge undertaking financially and creatively. Plus Tom and I are working on a comedy drama script. Oh yeah, and we decided to get married. That’ll show the patriarchy! Try putting me in a box now I’ve been validated by the marriage market! I do feel a little uncomfortable about being a married feminist, but I just want to feel like a princess on my big day!

titleLive like a local in New York City’s Lower East Side
body![1_5IZMI1p-CnHKiuixcVZFyQ.png](https://steemitimages.com/DQmTbtUMamLZFRYPyaBkRiof5gVhjbkP853EzyyZESdFDEt/1_5IZMI1p-CnHKiuixcVZFyQ.png) If you’re only in New York City for a weekend, then there are plenty of stylish hotels happy to take your money. However if you’ve got a bit of extra time, why not rent a short-term apartment and try living like a local? After a bit of research on Airbnb, we decided on a compact one-bedroom place on Madison Street on Manhattan’s Lower East Side. Our landlord was Randall — he was quick to answer our queries as we were finalising our plans, and had helpfully left the keys and a map of local points of interest ready for our collection in the laundromat downstairs. As always when you’re stepping into the unknown, we were a bit apprehensive to see what the apartment would be like — thankfully it was exactly as it had been described on the website, and turned out far better than we’d expected. The Lower East Side wasn’t really an area that I was familiar with, so it was great to quickly get to know our way around, working out what was where, and how the streets connected together — trying to avoid pulling out our tourist map as much as possible. Here’s some of the highlights that we found: Groceries Utilise your kitchen and save on restaurant bills. Stock up on supplies from Whole Foods — truly a great supermarket if you’re into that kind of thing. Grab specialty items from the Essex Street Food Market. The Hester Street Fair (Saturdays) is a very cool little market. Highlight was some macaroons that we tried — Honey & Cognac, and Candied Bacon & Maple — totally amazing. Coffee, cakes and cafes Clinton, East 7th, Ludlow, and Orchard streets are all worth exploring, with plenty of great cafes to try. Butter Lane for some superior cupcakes (East 7th); Clinton Street Bakery Company — popular with tourists so get there early to get a table; Roasting Plant — they take their coffee very seriously (Orchard Street); Lost Weekend NYC — selling good coffee and clothes (Orchard Street); Bagel and coffee from 88 Orchard Street, New York City. Photo: Gareth Johnson Sweet treats 16 Handles — takes frozen yoghurt to a whole new level (Spring Street). Rice to Riches — it’s rice pudding, but not as we know it (Spring Street). Van Leeuwen Ice Cream — the best in NYC (East 7th). Doughnut Plant — serious donuts. The peanut butter and jelly has to be tasted to be believed (Grand Street). Pop Karma — hand crafted popcorn (Orchard Street). Melt — ice cream sandwiches. AKA a lump of ice cream served between two cookies (Orchard Street). Milk Bar — desserts to get excited about (East 13th). Shopping New York City has always been a bit of landmark shopping destination, but the Lower East Side has some great independent and boutique stores that ensure you’ll be able to impress even your most fashion-forward friends. Restaurants Manhattan’s Chinatown is a ‘proper’ Chinatown, if there is such a thing. Sprawling, smelly, and busy — there’s plenty of cafes and restaurants selling all of the standard Chinese fare, as well as some really stand out operations. Don’t be fooled though — the Lower East Side has more going on than just Chinese food. Vanessa’s Dumplings — top quality and really inexpensive (Eldridge St). Il Buco — innovative Italian, the breakfast is particularly good (Great Jones St). Mission Chinese Food — perhaps the best food we had all trip, a taste sensation. If the wait for a table is too long then get take-away (Orchard St). Momofuku — try the pork buns. I say no more (1st Avenue). Ming outside Ming’s Caffe — Lower East Side, New York City. Photo: Gareth Johnson Bars While a lot of Manhattan’s bars and clubs are way over West, there’s a couple on Lower East Side worth investigating. I used to really love Eastern Bloc, but that’s now closed. The Boiler Room on East 4th Street is still good. Late night cheap eats If you’re making the most of your time in New York City, then you’re bound to be pulling a few late nights. Avoid fast food chains or dodgy pizza-by-the-slice joints, there’s quality late-night food options on the Lower East Side. Asia Dog — New York hotdogs with Asian toppings. Surprisingly tasty (Kenmare). La Esquina — super-cool Mexican takeaway. Really good tacos (Lafayette). Pommes Frites — Belgian-style fries with a huge range of flavoured mayo (2nd Ave). Katz’s Deli — pastrami sandwich and pickle please (East Houston); Mac Bar — an American carb-loading classic (Prince St) New York City has so much to explore, discover and enjoy. Living like a local helps you to connect with the neighbourhood around you — the Lower East Side is a pretty good place to start.

bodyCommemorating the attack on Charlie Hebdo ![1_5e1thoRX7_k8gjeXh-xX8g.png](https://steemitimages.com/DQmaHv7PEZnP4HxgXkReaqRwbC58XFMzQVi6yiuAd74pxpp/1_5e1thoRX7_k8gjeXh-xX8g.png) On 7 January 2015, a group of journalists, at work in their office in Paris, were brutally murdered. Two armed men stormed the office of Charlie Hebdo, deliberating targeting the journalists working there — targeting them for doing their job, for writing and creating content that they believed in, that they felt was important. A satirical magazine, published weekly, Charlie Hebdo features cartoons and articles — it’s irreverent and deliberately non-conformist. Stridently skeptical, Charlie Hebdo is hyper-critical of all forms of extremism and religion. The Charlie Hebdo team knew that they were being controversial. They had received threats. Their office was under police protection. On 7 January 2015, two gunmen forced their way into the Paris headquarters of Charlie Hebdo and opened fire, killing twelve people — staff cartoonists Charb, Cabu, Honoré, Tignous and Wolinski, economist Bernard Maris, editors Elsa Cayat and Mustapha Ourrad, guest Michel Renaud, maintenance worker Frédéric Boisseau, and police officers Brinsolaro and Merabet. Eleven people were wounded in the attack — four of them seriously. The two gunmen were identified as Saïd Kouachi and Chérif Kouachi, French Muslim brothers of Algerian descent. The gunmen identified themselves as belonging to the Islamist terrorist group Al-Qaeda’s branch in Yemen, which took responsibility for the attack. You have to admire courageous editor Stephane Charbonnier who declared defiantly: ‘I’d rather die standing than live on my knees.’ The attack on Charlie Hebdo was an attack that was designed to publicly punish free speech. There is only one way for journalists and media organisations around the world to respond, to commemorate the attack on Charlie Hebdo. We must continue take inspiration from Stephane Charbonnier and his colleagues at Charlie Hebdo. We must never submit to living on our knees. #jesuischarlie

titleThe drug epidemic that is hitting gay men hard
body![426f8-4c608ae1d92e3.jpg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmdvBMwqiK6kx5JbwKpAyCo8uz3jdkKQoRzR2sJ26nXjhq/426f8-4c608ae1d92e3.jpg) On Caledonia Road, in the heart of London’s Kings Cross, there is a small shopfront painted bright purple and a discreet sign that confirms that this is the home of London Friend. This nondescript, unassuming premises is the frontline in an ongoing campaign to educate gay men in Britain’s capital about the risks that they’re taking and the harm that they’re doing to themselves. I press the small buzzer to the left of the door and I’m soon ushered into a cluttered waiting room. There’s couches, chairs, a lot of community health posters and leaflets, and a kitchen which doubles as a reception desk. ‘It’s all a bit voluntary sector!’ apologises Monty Moncrieff, head of services for London Friend. Moncrieff is a friendly, bear of a man. Warm and engaging, he’s the kind of person you feel you could talk to about anything. I’m intrigued by his piercings. Having celebrated its 40th anniversary a few years ago, London Friend is the UK’s oldest LGBT charity, offering a range of services that address the full range of needs that someone may need to call on at vulnerable points of their life — whether that’s coming out, gender identity, relationship support, or drug and alcohol issues. Antidote is London Friend’s LGBT drug and alcohol service. Antidote aims to increase awareness, reduce harm and enable individuals to make informed choices in their lives — providing harm reduction advice, information and support for people who want to make a change to their drug and alcohol use, whether that’s to reduce use, gain greater control or stop altogether. Moncrieff explains that people generally start to admit that they have a problem: ‘…when it starts to impact on aspects of their life such as relationships or work, or when it becomes clear that they have developed a physical dependence.’ As someone who has worked in the drug and alcohol field for many years, what’s concerning Moncrieff are some of the current trends in drug use and how these are specifically impacting gay men: ‘We are seeing massive changes in the way that men who have sex with men are using drugs and the problems that they are experiencing as a result. What’s clear is that the drugs and the problems are community specific and we are not seeing these trends in the wider population. It’s particularly apparent in London that men who have sex with men are increasingly using drugs to enhance sex.’ The CODE sexual health clinic in the heart of London’s Soho is targeted specifically at gay men that are into the ‘harder’ sex scene. According to the clinic’s educational information, some gay men are using drugs during sex because they: ‘…dis-inhibit us. They can make us feel more confident, sexier, butcher, friendlier, more active or more passive, more like a porn star and can facilitate encounters that make our fantasies more likely.’ Commonly referred to as ‘chems’, the drugs that are being increasingly used in this sexualised context are Crystal Meth and GHB/GBL. Crystal Meth (also known as ‘Tina’) is powerfully addictive. Generally injected or smoked, Crystal Meth is a form of methamphetamine and, by triggering a cascading release of dopamine in the brain, increases alertness, concentration, energy, and in high doses, can induce euphoria, enhance self-esteem and increase libido. GHB (a naturally occurring substance) and GBL (a form of chemical solvent) are similar but different drugs, both generally referred to as ‘G’. Knowing which form you are taking though is important as GBL is more powerful as it is absorbed faster and requires a lower dose. Produced as a clear liquid and generally ingested by diluting in a drink, at low doses G has a euphoric effect and can increase sex drive, however when used excessively (or combined with alcohol), G acts like a sedative and quickly makes the user unconscious. Research by Antidote and specialist service the Club Drug Clinic is finding that the way that some gay men are using G is leading to significant physical addiction and dependency. According to Antidote’s Moncrieff, G started out as a party or club drug, used recreationally to create a euphoric high. The shift into highly sexualised environments such as sex parties, saunas and other sex-on-premises venues has become a noticeable trend in recent years. ‘The typical pattern is that guys are using G over a weekend to enhance or facilitate sex but people have got better at getting the dose right and knowing what to taken when, so the effects on the body are lasting longer and people are quickly forming a physical dependence.’ Based on the users that are presenting to services such as Antidote, the Club Drug Clinic and CODE, the physical dependency created by excessive use of G leads to users needing a fix every two hours. It is commonplace for addicted users to report that they have to set their bedside alarm to wake them every two hours during the night so that they can continue to take the drug at regular intervals and avoid withdrawal. Contrary to the common public perception of drug addicts, someone that is addicted to G is likely to be a gay man in their 20s or 30s, in employment, in stable housing and often in a relationship. One of the challenges with treating an addiction to G is that the only treatment option is to stop taking the drug. If the user is not able to stabilise and slowly reduce their usage, sudden withdrawal leads to a rapid onset of symptoms such as sweating, agitation, tremor and intense craving. As the symptoms develop, users can experience severe delirium, paranoia, respiratory depression and convulsions and this often results in admission to intensive care or in-patient treatment. Physical drug dependency is not the only risk associated with using chems in a highly sexualised environment — lower inhibitions combined with an enhanced sex-drive is a killer combination that seems to throw the accepted safe-sex wisdom out the window and is contributing to increasing rates of HIV infection among gay men in London. Antidote’s Moncrieff is concerned that London’s problems with G addiction are only just beginning: ‘In recent years we have seen a rapid rise in the number of men seeking help from Antidote — we are now helping over 500 men per year and we’re not advertising anywhere, that’s purely from word of mouth or referrals from GPs or sexual health services. There’s something different about G, we’re really just scratching the surface.’

titleGays get organised in Brussels
body![1-FcpSFReofUmWHOwXCYBSrA.jpeg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmWDhUHDY8nU1x9mP9j6G8nMbQCSGmsnJX3Zx4ESYHKH8U/1-FcpSFReofUmWHOwXCYBSrA.jpeg) I met Francois Massoz at the bar operated by Rainbow House in Brussels on the rue du Marche au Charbon — just around the corner from their main administrative office. Massoz is in charge of communications for Rainbow House. Young, passionate, handsome, and with an appealing French accent, Massoz talked articulately about the purpose of Rainbow House and its role within the vibrant LGBT community of Brussels. What is Rainbow House? We are the umbrella organisation for the LGBT organisations of Brussels. We were established nearly 15 years ago. We currently represent 40 organisations. Member organisations pay a small membership fee each year. What are some of the key activities of Rainbow House? A lot of our member organisations don’t have their own office space, so our offices give our members somewhere to work or hold meetings and events, and this also encourages collaboration between organisations. We produce a number of key publications: Out In Brussels is a small pocket-sized guide to the bars, events, and LGBT associations of Brussels. And Rainbow Times is a magazine that we produce three times each year. We also actively promote collaboration between our member organisations. Plus we organise Pride Week. Does Rainbow House undertake any health education or HIV prevention work? While a number of our members organisations are focused on health and prevention, Rainbow House is not itself focused on HIV prevention. However we do currently have two big projects underway. Firstly the HIV Cafe which is an event that is held once a month, creating a safe space for HIV positive people. This isn’t just for LGBT people, but for anyone that is HIV positive. This has received a lot of media coverage and one of our main aims is to challenge the stigmatisation of people living with HIV. Our second big project is Knitting Against AIDS. This involves people from the fashion industry but we’re also working with schools and retirement homes, getting people involved in knitting scarves while at the same time discussing and educating people about HIV and AIDS. We then hold a fashion show where the scarves are modelled by people who are HIV positive, the scarves are sold and the money raised is donated to HIV prevention associations. We are also participating in the Sialon project. This is a European-wide project that is conducting saliva-based HIV testing in clubs, bars and saunas to collect data about the number of men with HIV. Participants have the option to learn their results but this is not essential as the main priority is to collect the data. In addition we work with our member organisations to coordinate activities around World AIDS Day in December each year. How is Rainbow House funded? We are subsidised by the government, but it is quite a complicated system. There are a lot of different government departments we have to apply to for funding, so it takes a lot of time and effort. One of the challenges is everything is designed as short-term project funding, so you are often waiting for a long time to know if an application has been successful, and we need to apply for a lot of different projects in order to maintain the funding that we need to pay our staff. We have a core staff of five people. There is only limited private funding available, so continuing to access government funding is essential. This ongoing challenge regarding funding is one reason a new organisation — Regenboogvrienden (friends of Rainbow House) — has been established as a fundraising vehicle. What does the future hold for Rainbow House? If we continue to find money there will be a good future. If we don’t, we will still try to survive. While everything we’re doing doesn’t require a lot of money, we still ultimately depend on the support of the government. If anything changes then we could disappear very quickly. The good thing is that we have existed for nearly 15 years now so I am hopeful for the future.

He opened it with trepidation, he had a pretty good idea who it was going to be. “Morning boy…” growled Aden. Standing next to Aden was his brother Casper. “Good mornings Sir…” replied Robbie quietly. “Aren’t you going to invite us in?” growled Casper. “Yes Sir…” nodded Robbie, “…please, come in…” Casper closed the door behind them as they followed Robbie into the cabin. The two big men took a seat at the kitchen table. “Can I get you coffee or water or anything?” offered Robbie. “What did you see last night?” growled Aden, ignoring Robbie’s question. “I… um… I don’t really know…” admitted Robbie. “You saw us fucking your uncle?” suggested Casper. “Um… yes…” nodded Robbie. “You liked watching us fucking your uncle?” continued Casper, Robbie nodded. “You had your jeans down and you were jacking your cock as you watched us fuck your uncle?” Robbie nodded again. “Then what did you see?” pushed Aden. “I… I don’t really know… honest…” replied Robbie. “Did you see us transform?” suggested Aden, “Did you see us transform into big cats? Into jaguars?” “I… I think so…” replied Robbie, “…but… but how is that even possible?” “It’s possible…” shrugged Casper. “But why doesn’t my uncle remember anything about it?” added Robbie. “Your uncle is a well-trained whore…” growled Casper, “…he’s so used to us telling him what to do that it’s easy enough to put him into a trance so that he only remembers what we want him to…” “Why… why didn’t you do that to me?” asked Robbie uncertainly. “Oh, don’t worry…” smiled Aden, “…we will…” “What are you people?” asked Robbie, suddenly beginning to feel very vulnerable.

titleDear Donald… It’s Okay, I Feel Scared Sometimes Too
body![1-pszSvjy6qyEd7TjpUYEnTA.png](https://steemitimages.com/DQmcUZv9g3ZQz8oVP5MG53EaBAZU7UVofKRBF5VLUW8K1WY/1-pszSvjy6qyEd7TjpUYEnTA.png) “All men are created equal. Now matter how hard they try, they can never erase those words. That is what America is about.” Harvey Milk. Mr President, I know you’ve got a lot on your plate at the minute. I’ve never thought of the Presidency of the United States as being an easy job, but I’m sure the reality of what’s required must be fairly overwhelming. I don’t want to take up too much of your time, but I just wanted to write to say thank you. With the flurry of activity around the appointment of a special prosecutor, Senate committee investigations, calls for impeachment, and whatever other dramas have unfolded between the time of me putting pen to paper and you reading this — it must feel like the whole world is out to get you, that you no longer know who to trust, that you’re no longer sure who your friends are. I imagine that there are plenty of people vying for your time, vying for your attention, vying for your leadership, but I just thought it might help you keep some perspective on things to know that you’re not alone, that there are people around the world who know how you feel, who may even empathise with you. Like a lot of gay men, I grew up in a time and a place that feels a lot different from where we are today. I was bullied at school — somehow it was obvious to others that I was different to them and, with a Lord-of-the-Flies brutality, kids see differentness as a weakness. Have you read Lord of the Flies? I’m not suggesting that you’re gay, but I’ve got a feeling that you know what it feels like to be different, to not really fit in, even when you really want to. It took a long time for me to work out who I was, to understand what it means to be a gay man in today’s world, to embrace that. In some ways I feel I’ve had to reinvent myself — not as many times as Madonna, obviously, but I’ve had to keep evolving, learning, adapting. I guess you’ve had to do the same, we have to keep up with the world in which we live. Do you like Madonna? Do you ever look at yourself in the mirror, surprised by the person looking back at you? I often catch the reflection of myself and can’t help but wonder: How on earth did I get here? How did I become this person? I expect the mirror to show me a young, idealistic kid in his mid-20s — it’s always a surprise when it doesn’t. Are there a lot of mirrors in the White House? Campaigning for marriage equality has been a big focus for my community in recent years. Back in 2015, when the Supreme Court ruled that state bans on gay marriage were unconstitutional, and when then-President Obama made a speech in the White House Rose Garden declaring that “love is love” and that the decision in Obergefell v Hodges was a step towards making “our union a little more perfect,” it felt like we’d really turned a corner. But just a few years down the line and our safe spaces no longer feel so safe, the Trans members of our community are more vulnerable than ever, and we feel powerless to help gay men in places such as Chechnya who are being persecuted for being gay, for being different, for being a minority. That’s why I’m writing to thank you. Well, I guess I’m thanking you in advance. You haven’t had a chance yet to do anything to help the men in Chechnya being persecuted for being gay. You haven’t had a chance yet to explain how you’re going to protect trans kids from bullying and harassment now that you’ve repealed the guidance on gender-identity bathroom access. You haven’t had the chance to show gay men like me that you understand that being part of a minority brings with it a unique set of challenges and uncertainty. It’s only been a little over 100 days. You haven’t had the chance to do a lot of things. Please show me that looking out for the LGBT community figures somewhere on your list-of-things-to-do in your mission to Make America Great Again. We used to try and tackle the self-harm and self-doubt that a lot of young LGBT people experience by telling them that It Gets Better. I’m scared that they’re going to stop believing us. Does that scare you?

titleTeam Management: Goal Setting – My unscientific approach to trying to get a multi-discipline team to deliver results.
body![0-_uHHLdfpH-WytYN3.jpeg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmbbA68qheyPLPYWmDFbnpDFnEsUdsmVpn2YGyLa5n36rJ/0-_uHHLdfpH-WytYN3.jpeg) At Gay Star News, the online media company where I work, we’ve been growing. We’ve been recruiting new members to the team, and there’s also been some turn-over in roles, plus we’ve got some plans for further growth. So it feels like we’re going through a period of change. At the moment we effectively have three different dimensions to the business resources we’ve got — Team Tris, Team Scott, and Team Gareth. They’re obviously not the official names of the teams, we don’t actually have official names for the teams, but you could broadly characterise them as Engagement (Team Tris), Partnerships (Team Scott), and Delivery (Team Gareth). The Engagement side of the troika (Team Tris) is focused on content, distribution, and audience. The Partnerships side (Team Scott) is focused on direct sales to commercial partners. The Delivery side (Team Gareth) is focused on technology, events, sales support, business management, finance, and project management. 1. The Problem Having gone from one fairly low-maintenance direct report in my Delivery team to now having four new-to-the-business direct reports, I’m wanting to put in some easy-to-use systems to help everyone in the Delivery team know what they should be doing, and to be able to transparently track what we’re prioritising, where we’re allocating time, as well as demonstrating that stuff is getting done. We currently don’t have a business-wide goal-setting framework in place at Gay Star News, and there’s quite a material difference between the three teams, so having a one-size-fits-all approach probably doesn’t make much sense. The Engagement team runs pretty much like a content-generating newsroom; the Partnerships team is a classic sales team; whereas the Delivery team has the five of us all working on pretty distinct and separate deliverables. I’ve managed this kind of team before in other companies, so in a lot of senses this dynamic feels quite familiar, but I wanted to try and build some solid foundations that would enable and support future growth of the business. 2. The Research After a bit of reading about how different teams and organisations tackle this kind of thing, it was eventually the experience of Hailley Griffis from the marketing team at Buffer that helped me find a way forward. Griffis wrote about how they had adapted Buffer’s six-week planning cycle to the marketing team. The solutions that Griffis ended up with didn’t really resonate with me, but the six-week planning cycle, and adapting that to the team dynamics and business objectives that I was grappling with in the Delivery team at Gay Star News made a lot of sense to me. 3. The Starting Point My starting point was to write down (in a Google Sheet) a list of everything that I could think of that myself and my direct reports need to deliver in the next six weeks. I created a separate list for each of the team: Alex, Nuno, Mattia, Addison, and myself. That was a useful exercise — it demonstrated that we had a lot of stuff to get done. 4. Isolation At this point, I realised I’d been working in isolation from Team Tris and Team Scott, so I emailed both Tris and Scott with a summary of where I’d got to and what I was working on, with the caveat that I was happy to keep working in isolation on this as I didn’t really see it as appropriate for their teams. 5. Goals and Strategy Just getting-stuff-done doesn’t make a lot of sense unless we’ve got some context that the stuff that we’re doing is helping the performance of the business and building towards some longer-term strategy. I allocated three specific goals for each team member. Each team member has different goals, with specific and measurable numbers. All of our goals (including mine) are shown together on the front-sheet of the spreadsheet-tracker I’ve built, so there’s transparency across the team and they’re always front-and-centre. 6. The Initial Roll-Out My next step was to empower each member of the Delivery team to take ownership of their own deliverables — planning, tracking, updating (using the combined Google Sheet). Addison doesn’t join the team until next week, so I want to present it to him as this-is-how-the-team-works. My roll-out to Alex, Nuno, and Mattia was an individual, face-to-face conversation — explaining my rationale and what I was wanting to try and put in place. I also talked each of them through my thinking on the goals that had been set — sense-checking to ensure that they agreed with the goals and understood how they would work towards them, as well as how the goals contribute to the overall performance of the business. In effect, the list of stuff-we-need-to-get done is to become the work-plan that I’ll be reviewing with each of them on a daily basis, and it also records everything that has been completed (which will be reviewed in monthly performance discussions). 7. Next Steps So far, things seem to be going pretty well and I’m fairly pleased with myself. The real test is whether this approach becomes part of our normal way of working, or if it becomes a struggle to update, maintain, and review. The other interesting test will be when Addison joins next week and we see how someone new to the team adapts to this style of structured working. It’s all to play for!

titleRecruiting a New Salesperson – a case study in failure
body![0-FMZvX2uZH5yOe0yj.jpeg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmWo9A27JBhyo9jy9TzSycHhyHjPz9sQxKaMui3Hca9KAj/0-FMZvX2uZH5yOe0yj.jpeg) I’m currently recruiting a new salesperson to join our commercial team at Gay Star News. We’re a digital media company — providing news and information to the global LGBTQ community. Gay Star News has been running for nearly six years now, and having the right people in the commercial team has been a key dependency for us since the beginning. Our commercial director is one of the founders of the business, and he’s been the one constant in the sales team since the business was launched. In the six years we’ve been in operation we’ve had six salespeople come and go, number seven has been with us for three months, and we’re currently looking to expand our team from two people to three people. My brief was to search for candidates for salesperson number eight. The Requirements We Advertised For Key responsibilities: Identify and connect with potential client contacts and commercial partners Prepare and present client-specific concepts and proposals Develop and nurture relationships Requirements: A passion for digital media Excellent communication skills — in writing, over the phone, and face-to-face Self-motivated, driven, entrepreneurial and enthusiastic Creative and strategic approach Knowledge of LGBTI market The Search Process I had two search channels that I decided to pursue for this brief: Social Media: We shared our job ad across the social media channels of Gay Star News, as well as asking all members of the team to share it across their social media and professional networks. Indeed Job Listings: This is a free job-listing service that I’ve had some success with in the past and so decided to run our ad on that also. I set myself the target of identifying at least five candidates for an initial screening conversation. The Initial Response I received eleven responses from potential candidates who were interested in the role. Three women and eight men. After a bit of email discussion with each of them, I booked in six candidates for a first-round informal coffee chat. Four of the short-listed candidates were male, two candidates were women. The First Round Candidate 1: Male. He’d seen our ad via the Indeed job listing. I’d scheduled a telephone call with him — time and date confirmed. He didn’t pick up the call when I rang at the scheduled time. He didn’t respond to my subsequent email asking if he wanted to reschedule the call. Candidate 2: Female. She had seen our ad via the Indeed job listing. This was a face-to-face meeting. It went really well, she seemed a natural fit for our team and had the sort of attitude and energy that I was looking for. I followed up after the meeting and booked in a second-round meeting. Candidate 3: Male. He had seen our ad via social media. This was a face-to-face meeting. He was a strong candidate but talking through the role he decided that what we were offering wasn’t the job that he was looking for, so he decided to withdraw his application. Candidate 4: Male. He had seen our ad via social media and knew a couple of people within our existing team. This was a face-to-face meeting. He had some retail sales experience but acknowledged that he didn’t have experience in the relationship-based sales that we were looking for. He would potentially fit with us but would need a lot of training and mentoring, so on that basis I decided not to progress his application. Candidate 5: Male. This is a candidate that I’d had some contact with the last time that I was recruiting for this role. He wasn’t available then but having seen our ad on social media he got in touch. His sales experience was retail, but I was really impressed by him. He seemed to have the right attitude and skill-set. I followed up after the meeting and booked in a second-round meeting. Candidate 6: Female. She had seen our ad via the Indeed job listing. While she was a little weak on sales experience, I liked her personality and her attitude. I followed up after the meeting and booked in a second-round meeting. Following each candidate meeting I sent a meeting report to my fellow executive directors to keep them up-to-date with the recruitment process and the candidates I was speaking with. By the end of the first round I had a short-list of three candidates — two women and one guy — Candidate 2; Candidate 5; and Candidate 6. The Second Round Recruiting a new salesperson (image: Pixabay)I scheduled all three second-round meetings for two weeks after the first-round. All three meetings on the same day, back-to-back, one hour each. That tight timing wasn’t ideal, but bringing together my other two directors (who I needed for this second-round process) was a logistical challenge, so I opted to get them all done on the same day rather that string the process out. I gave all three candidates the same task in terms of preparation. I gave them a copy of our (fairly comprehensive) sales strategy — this includes a lot of detail about our proposition and our approach to securing commercial partnerships. I asked the candidates to come prepared to discuss the approach they would take in their first three months to identify prospects, build their pipeline, and begin some conversations. The guidance that I gave was that we weren’t looking for a big presentation, but an informal round-table brainstorm to see where their thinking had taken them. I set ourselves a template by which we could record our impressions of each candidate and compare and contrast our assessment. The criteria that we were recording against were: Initial Impression Quality of preparation Presentation/Discussion Creative Thinking Like-ability Dynamism/Presence Overall Impression First up was Candidate #6, followed by Candidate #2, with Candidate #5 being our final session of the second-round. All three candidates performed strongly. All were on time, all presented very well. It was clear that they each had their strengths and weaknesses, pros and cons, and our debrief session after each candidate was useful to discuss and record our thoughts, impressions, and insights. As part of the Overall Impression component, we gave each candidate a score out of ten. It wasn’t particularly scientific, but it was one way of helping us to rank the overall strength of the candidates in comparison to each other. Candidate #2 received our highest score. We decided to offer the role to Candidate #2. The Offer It was a Friday when I called Candidate #2 to offer her the role. She was excited and pleased to have been offered the position, but confirmed that she also had another offer on the table that she was considering. She was going away for the weekend and asked if she could have until the Tuesday to make a decision, I was happy to agree to that timeline. I didn’t hear from her on Tuesday, so on Wednesday I texted to see if she was ready for a call. She advised that she had injured her foot, was in hospital for some tests and asked if we could speak on the Thursday. On the Thursday we spoke and she confirmed that she had accepted the other role, so she wasn’t going to be able to accept our offer. After a quick discussion with the other directors, we decided to pause our search and re-think what we were looking for. Starting Again It’s a bit frustrating when you spend a lot of time sourcing candidates, you find people that you’re excited about but you can’t land them for whatever reason. But, I guess that’s just how things go when you’re recruiting, so it’s time to get back in the game. The search continues.

On the Thursday we spoke and she confirmed that she had accepted the other role, so she wasn’t going to be able to accept our offer.\nAfter a quick discussion with the other directors, we decided to pause our search and re-think what we were looking for.\n\nStarting Again\nIt’s a bit frustrating when you spend a lot of time sourcing candidates, you find people that you’re excited about but you can’t land them for whatever reason.\nBut, I guess that’s just how things go when you’re recruiting, so it’s time to get back in the game.\nThe search continues.",
