You wake up before your alarm goes off. Your morning jog feels like playtime. The coffee tastes better. And there is no traffic on your way into the office. And when you sit down to get to work, you feel like you could conquer the world.\n\nOther days are not like that all.\n\nAnd while you can’t prevent every unfortunate a.m. situation that might come your way, experts say there are a few things you can do to encourage your mornings in that direction so you can make the most out of the rest of your day, too.\n\n“If you wake up [energized], you’re going to carry that energy through the rest of the day,” says productivity expert and coach Ellen Goodwin. Starting your morning with little “wins” (having an outfit picked out and ready to go, working out and leaving on time) primes your brain to work toward more “wins” and successes throughout the day, Goodwin explains.\nBut if you start the morning off on the wrong foot, you’re already behind, she says. And that means you’ll need to use the energy you do have to get to a better emotional state, she explains. (Think back to how you calmed yourself down the last time you got caught in a traffic nightmare or public transport breakdown.)\n\n“Energy equals willpower — and you only have so much at a given time,” she says. So the more of it you use to recover from a train delay or an alarm-didn’t-go-off morning, the less you have later for concentrating on a big project at work, family drama or whatever your day throws your way.\nThere are also physiological reasons you’re doing your body (and the rest of your day) a favor when your morning right. The body’s natural body clock — your circadian rhythm — runs on a roughly 24-hour cycle with the help of cues from your environment (like lightness and darkness and exercise) to help regulate sleep, energy levels, metabolism and other bodily functions. And the choices you make to start your day, from logging that early-bird workout to sleeping in for too long, either help or hurt keep that clock running on time, Namni Goel, PhD, a research associate professor in psychiatry in University of Pennsylvania’s School of Medicine says.\n\n“The morning is a critical time that can set the tone for the entire day” — and your short- and long-term health, says Goel — a biological psychologist and behavioral neuroscientist who specializes in sleep, circadian rhythms and their effect on human physiology.\n\nHere’s what Goodwin and Goel say are some of the best things you can do to start your day right.\n1.Plan ahead!\nOne of the most productive things you can do to start your day on the right foot should actually happen before you go to sleep the previous day, Goodwin says — make a plan. It doesn’t need to be a minute-by-minute itinerary, but it should map out the major tasks or things you want to accomplish the next day — and how you want to spend the first few hours of the day.\n\nLay out the clothes you’ll wear and make sure you have ingredients ready to make a healthy breakfast. It helps to plan the small things that might slow you down, she adds. The idea is to avoid “decision fatigue,” she says. “Habits that get you out the door in the morning without having to stress over decisions enables you to have more willpower to make [other] decisions during the day about important things.”\n2.Get outside in the sun\nWant to make that early workout work even harder for you? Do it outside in the sun. Getting sunlight first thing in the morning tells your body clock it’s time to start the day, Goel explains.\n\nThere’s an entire field of research (chronobiology) that shows light is what triggers the body to stop producing melatonin, the hormone that tells the body to sleep, and be more alert. (And conversely, experts know that not being exposed to enough natural light throughout the day can trigger mood problems like depression and low energy.)\n3.Meditate\n“Quieting the brain is a time-honored way to be more creative, more contemplative and more in touch with oneself,” Goodwin says. Some people might not necessarily feel an energy boost from meditating, but because it helps us to think more effectively and efficiently, it should make for a much more productive day.\nHaving trouble tuning worries out and turning your brain off? Try journaling or coloring, Goodwin suggests. Both activities have the same effect as meditation, she says — to calm you down, slow down and focus your thinking and let inspire you to think more creatively.\n 4.Make coffee (at home)\nIf a cup of java — or tea — starts your morning on the right foot, have your caffeine in the morning, Goel says. There’s a lot of data to show it really does help most people feel more alert and less groggy, she says. And while a coffee habit can get a bad rap, there’s also a lot of research that shows drinking it (in moderation!) actually has some health benefits, too.\n\nPlus if you brew it at home you’re saving yourself some green, too. Spending even just a couple of dollars five days a week on coffee can set you back more than $500 over the course of a year (or as much as $1,300 for a daily five-dollar latte).\n5.Eat breakfast\nFood is where your body gets energy — so it makes sense that starting your day with food is one of the most energizing things you can do. Our metabolism works better earlier in the day, Goel explains. That means that the body is better able to turn the calories you eat into energy that you can use in the morning, she says. (Recent research from her team backs this up, showing that eating bigger meals later in the day was linked to more weight gain and higher cholesterol — and actually harmed the way the body breaks down fat.)\n\nAnd even though there’s some discrepancy in the data, most experts agree skipping your first meal can make you more likely to overeat later in the day, Goel adds.\n\nShe suggests eating within about two hours of waking up. “You want to be able to capitalize on those energy stores before you head out the door.” And include some protein, as well healthy carbohydrates (like fruit or whole grains) in you’re a.m.-meal, she adds — and skip the donuts and other sugar-packed foods. “A donut is not going to sustain you as well as eggs,” she says.",

Intimate, encrypted, private messaging services like WhatsApp and Messenger are in. Facebook’s semi-public, not-very-private News Feed is out.\n\n“I believe the future of communication will increasingly shift to private, encrypted services where people can be confident what they say to each other stays secure and their messages and content won’t stick around forever,” Zuckerberg wrote. “This is the future I hope we will help bring about.”\n\nThe post was significant for a number of reasons, perhaps most importantly because Facebook has built a $55 billion annual advertising business on products that aren’t really private, don’t have end-to-end encryption, and do stick around forever. (Or pretty darn close.)\n\nThis is, on the surface, a dramatic shift in Facebook’s thinking. And it leads to a number of questions.\nWhy is Facebook doing this?\nZuckerberg answers that question without explicitly answering that question. “In a few years,” he wrote, “I expect future versions of Messenger and WhatsApp to become the main ways people communicate on the Facebook network.” It’s as simple as that. Facebook doesn’t make product decisions without consulting user data. And if Zuckerberg says he expects that WhatsApp and Messenger are the future, it’s because that’s where Facebook sees that users are already spending their time.\n\nFacebook foreshadowed this announcement last fall when it told investors that Stories, the ephemeral photo and video montages it copied from Snapchat, was blowing up in terms of popularity. “I just think that this is the future,” Zuckerberg said at the time. “People want to share in ways that don’t stick around permanently, and I want to be sure that we fully embrace this.”\nFacebook can see what its users are doing — they’re sending private messages and sharing disappearing photos and videos — and it’s leaning into those trends.\nWhat will happen to Facebook and Instagram?\nNothing yet. Zuckerberg didn’t say anything about abandoning Facebook or Instagram, and it sounds like Instagram will eventually get more privacy and encryption features that fit with Facebook’s new mission. The reality is that Zuckerberg couldn’t abandon those products even if he wanted to: The vast majority of Facebook’s revenue comes from those two apps, so they won’t be going anywhere.\n\nWhat this does seem to signal, though, is something rather startling: This feels like the beginning of the end of Facebook’s core social network. No, Facebook isn’t going away anytime soon. Yes, Facebook may still be relevant a decade from now. And it’s likely the company will continue to invest in building Facebook features, like Marketplace and Facebook Watch.\n\nBut Facebook’s core social network is primarily a place to post photos and videos and comments that aren’t private and don’t disappear. That’s not the future Facebook is building toward — and apparently not the future that users actually want. What that actually means for your News Feed is unclear, though it’s not likely to change anytime soon.\n\nWill this impact Facebook’s business?\nThis may be the most important question, and it’s one Zuckerberg didn’t address in his post. But Facebook’s entire business is built on a data-driven advertising model. Facebook puts ads into users’ feeds, and messaging apps don’t have those feeds. Those ads are also valuable to advertisers because Facebook can target people based on information that they keep on their profile. If everyone is using private messaging apps with high levels of encryption, it’s fair to wonder what data Facebook will use to target people with ads moving forward.\n\nThat doesn’t mean there is no business model for private messaging — WhatsApp and Messenger have Stories, for example, and Facebook can sell ads alongside those Stories. WhatsApp is also building out a business product, which will let brands and retailers communicate with users via messages. Given Facebook’s interest in cryptocurrencies, it seems that there may be an opportunity for the company to push deeper into commerce and payments as things become more and more private and secure.\n\nBut WhatsApp and Messenger are not big businesses for Facebook despite having more than 1 billion users apiece. Figuring out how to make money from messaging will be crucial to this process. It appears Facebook has time. The company’s stock barely moved on the news Wednesday, which means it’s clear investors aren’t concerned, at least in the short term.\n\nAre there risks to having everything encrypted?\nYes, there are definite tradeoffs. Messages that are end-to-end encrypted are not accessible by Facebook, which is great news for privacy, but also make it easier for bad actors to use Facebook products to do harm. WhatsApp is already dealing with this in India, where so-called fake news as been a real problem, in some cases leading to real offline violence. In Brazil, a WhatsApp executive was arrested a few years ago because the government wanted access to some user messages, which Facebook claims it couldn’t provide. Zuckerberg said that in Facebook’s private, encrypted future, the company will not be able to catch posts on “child exploitation, terrorism, and extortion,” but that it still has “a responsibility to work with law enforcement and to help prevent these wherever we can.”\n\nThere are benefits to encryption, too. Most people would probably say they don’t want Facebook (or Apple or Google) accessing their private messages. And as Zuckerberg pointed out, this could also be important as messaging apps become a place for financial transactions.\n\nUltimately, though, Zuckerberg says the trade-offs are worth it. “We understand there are a lot of trade-offs to get right, and we’re committed to consulting with experts and discussing the best way forward,” he wrote.\ns this why Facebook wants to merge all of its messaging apps?\nIt’s a big part of it, yes. If people are flocking toward private messaging, it behooves Facebook to integrate its services so that’s it’s easier to create one massive network. Zuckerberg said as much on Wednesday.\n\n“Today if you want to message people on Facebook you have to use Messenger, on Instagram you have to use Direct, and on WhatsApp you have to use WhatsApp,” Zuckerberg wrote. “We want to give people a choice so they can reach their friends across these networks from whichever app they prefer.”\n\nEventually, Zuckerberg wants this to “extend” to text messages as well.\n\nIt’s also possible Facebook is doing this to avoid anti-trust problems. There has been a lot of talk in the past year that Facebook is too big, and may need to be broken up. That would be a lot harder to do if all its apps and services are linked.\nHow quickly will all this happen?\nIt’s going to take some time for Facebook to reorient its products to feel more private. Zuckerberg said this transition would happen “over the next few years.” It’s not at all uncommon for Facebook to announce things that never come to fruition, but this feels a little too big to just fall by the wayside.\n\nOne thing to keep in mind: Facebook can’t merge all of its individual messaging apps until, at a minimum, they’re all end-to-end encrypted. That can be a lengthy process; it took WhatsApp years to fully roll it out. It may not take that long this time around, and one source inside Facebook said the goal is to make some noticeable movements on this merging process during the second half of 2019. But this entire transition to more encryption and more privacy won’t be done anytime soon.",
