      "body": "Slush, the CEO of Satoshi Labs, the company behind the Trezor Wallet and other efforts in the cryptocurrency space, also the founder of one of the first Bitcoin mining pools, stirred up a bit of a discussion on Twitter recently when he said that he believed scaling changes are being rushed.\n\nThe debate on the scaling of Bitcoin and the various solutions that aim to make that happen is to reach a tipping point on August 1st, with mining nodes either signaling or not the way forward that they want to go. In one scenario, miners which do not signal in favor of a certain proposal will be blacklisted from the larger blockchain. Scenarios like this can lead to chain splits. Chain splits can lead to market uncertainty.\n\n\nRecently, it seems there was a significant dip in the value of Bitcoin, and then a requisite rebound already took place. This rebound is incomplete, of course, for people who bought at the high. Those people may have some time yet to wait, as the volatility that may come along with impending uncertainties will play its role on the price as well as usability of Bitcoin proper.\n\nMany comments on the Twitter thread suggested that running Bitcoin Core and the BIP91 patches is the best way forward.\n\nNevertheless, in a separate Tweet, Slush clarified that his pool would be going with the flow of things, not fighting some political agenda:\n\n    @slush_pool will start signalling #BIP91 tomorrow. Please calm down everybody, we don't play any political game.\n\n    — slush (@slushcz) July 19, 2017\n\nNon-politicized stances would have been preferable all the way through the scaling debate. Instead, hyper political activities on both sides of the debate led to all time high and a fever pitch of raging pitch forks going both ways. Neither side was quite sure why they were so angry at the other, but both sides took to the web with all the vitriol of jilted lovers. The whole scene did not give a good look to Bitcoin as a whole, and whether you believe there was a bubble or not, newcomers witnessing such nonsense in a season of such robust price rising were probably spooked. That this contributed, in part, to the downfall of the recent all time high cannot be disputed – certainly Bitcoiners do not look like much more than a childish bunch of accidentally wealthy libertarians from a high level view, after a certain point. Not the sort of thing to throw a lot of money into, in short – although these episodes fade, and then fresh money flows in, inevitably, as we’ve seen over the past few years.\n\nAll things being equal, less drama would lead to a better Bitcoin. Those that want to make Bitcoin great again should argue for less arguing.",

Ridgeway was 18 years old in 1968 when his patrol was attacked in Vietnam. He was captured and held prisoner for five years before being released, a time during which he was believed dead. Ridgeway was “killed” in Vietnam on Feb. 25, 1968.\n\nThe 18-year-old Marine Corps private first class fell with a bullet to the shoulder during a savage firefight with the enemy outside Khe Sanh.\n\nDozens of Marines, from what came to be called “the ghost patrol,” perished there.\n\nAt first, Ridgeway was listed as missing in action. Back home in Texas, his old school, Sam Houston High, made an announcement over the intercom.\n\nBut his mother, Mildred, had a letter from his commanding officer saying there was little hope. And that August, she received a “deeply regret” telegram from the Marines saying he was dead.\n\nOn Sept. 10, he was buried in a national cemetery in St. Louis. A tombstone bearing his name and the names of eight others missing from the battle was erected over the grave. His mother went home with a folded American flag.\n\nBut as his comrades and family mourned, Ron Ridgeway sat in harsh North Vietnamese prisons for five years, often in solitary confinement, mentally at war with his captors and fighting for a life that was technically over.\n\nLast month, almost 50 years after his supposed demise, Ridgeway, 68, a retired supervisor with Veterans Affairs, sat in his home here and recounted for the first time in detail one of the most remarkable stories of the Vietnam War.\n\nAs the United States marks a half-century since the height of the war in 1967 and ’68, his “back-from-the-dead” saga is that of a young man’s perseverance through combat, imprisonment and abuse. \n\n![cc.jpg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmdUveqGjWfg47y1wbYgD4ResSgmR45JksAf34JvS7q2vZ/cc.jpg)  Marines in 1967. You have to believe that they are not going to defeat you, that you’re going to win.”\n\n‘Everybody’s dead’\n\nAbout 9:30 on the morning of Feb. 25, Pfc. Ridgeway’s four-man fire team charged an enemy trench line.\n\nThe curving trench seemed empty when they got there. But as Ridgeway and the others made their way along it, suddenly an enemy grenade dropped in.\n\n“We back around the curve,” he recalled. “It blows up.”\n\n“We throw a couple grenades,” he said. “We backed off. . . . Then we realized the firing [from Marines] behind us had almost died down to nothing.”\n\nWhen they stood up to look around, they saw North Vietnamese soldiers walking through the underbrush toward them. “I guess they thought we were all dead,” he said.\n\n“We cut loose on them,” he recalled. “They were easy targets.”\n\nRidgeway had been part of a platoon of about 45 men sent out from the besieged Khe Sanh combat base, in what was then northern South Vietnam, to find enemy positions, and perhaps capture a prisoner.\n\nThe enemy’s noose around the Marine base had been tightening, with heavy mortar and artillery fire, and the patrol was hazardous. Six thousand Americans were surrounded by 20,000 to 40,000 North Vietnamese soldiers.\n\nOn that foggy morning, the patrol’s leader, 2nd Lt. Donald Jacques, 20, strayed off course and was drawn into a deadly ambush, Jacques’s company commander, Capt. Kenneth W. Pipes, said.\n\nMore than two dozen Marines, including Jacques, were killed.\n\n[A young officer’s death is captured by a doomed photographer]\n\nOne of the Marines in the trench with Ridgeway, James R. Bruder, 18, of Allentown, Pa., was cut down as the enemy returned fire, according to author Ray Stubbe’s book about Khe Sanh, “Battalion of Kings.”\n\n“Stitched him across the chest and killed him,” Ridgeway remembered.\n\nThe fire team leader, Charles G. Geller, 20, of East St. Louis, Ill., took a peek, and a bullet creased his forehead, knocking him down.\n\n“Everybody’s dead,” Geller said, according to Stubbe’s book. “Everybody behind us is dead. . . . What are we going to do?”\n\nThey had to retreat. Geller left first, running back across the field where they had charged, followed by Ridgeway.\n\nThe son of a Southern Pacific railroad worker, Ridgeway came from a working-class neighborhood of Houston. He had a younger brother.\n\nHis parents were divorced. He had left high school and joined the Marines because “I wanted to get away,” he recalled.\n\nAs he and Geller ran to the rear, they came upon Willie J. Ruff, 20, of Columbia, S.C., who was lying on his back with a broken arm.\n\n“We were in a hurry,” Ridgeway said. “But we stopped. He was wounded.”\n\nAs Geller knelt beside Ruff, a bullet hit Geller in the face, leaving a terrible wound. Then Ridgeway was struck by a round that went through his shoulder. All three men were now down.\n\n“All we could do was lay there and play dead,” he said. “We were in the wide open.”\n\nRidgeway said he drifted in and out of consciousness. When Geller, who was delirious, got to his knees, the enemy threw a grenade, killing him.\n\nRidgeway said the North Vietnamese then began shooting at Marines who had fallen in front of their trenches. “They’re popping the bodies to make sure they’re dead,” he said.\n\nOne bullet hit the dirt near him. A second glanced off his helmet and struck him the buttock, he said.\n\n“When that hit, it jarred the body,” he said. “They figured they got me. Left me for dead and kept working their way down past me.”\n\nRidgeway passed out again. When he woke up, it was dark and American artillery was pounding the area.\n\nRuff said he had been hit again and begged Ridgeway not to leave him. Ridgeway said he wouldn’t. At some point that night, Ruff died.\n\nRidgeway was awakened the following morning by someone pulling on his arm. He thought at first it was fellow Marines.\n\nBut when he looked up, he realized it was a young North Vietnamese soldier trying to pull off his wristwatch.\nAgony and identification\n\nAfter the firefight, the shattered survivors of the patrol made it back to the combat base, and the dead were left on the battlefield.\n\nA rescue mission was deemed unwise by higher-ups, who feared losing even more men and depleting the base’s defenses, according to Pipes, who is now retired and lives in California.\n\nIn a telephone interview, he said that with binoculars, he could see Marines’ bodies strewn on the battlefield. “It was worse than agony,” he said. A newspaper photographer took pictures.\n\nFar away, in North Vietnam, the rainy season was on, and Ridgeway was in his seventh month as a POW.\nThe work of surviving\n\nAs he sat alone in his windowless cell beside a wooden bed and the bucket he used for waste, Ridgeway went about creating a “make-believe” life. \n\nThere was no one to talk to, and he was only allowed out once a day to empty the bucket.\n\nSo he imagined that he was somewhere else, that he owned a pickup truck, that he had a wife and children, that he would go fishing.\n\nIt was a mental exercise, he said, and he found that spending three days in his make-believe world would take up a whole day in solitary.\n\nRidgeway said that by then, his captors considered him a “die-hard reactionary” and all Marines “animals.”\n\nHe hadn’t cooperated with his guards. He had lied to interrogators, pretended he was green kid who had never fired his rifle and gave them bogus military information.\n\nThe startled North Vietnamese soldier had locked and loaded his rifle when he realized Ridgeway was alive that morning.\n\nRidgeway expected to be killed. “You didn’t hear about prisoners being taken,” he said. But he was bandaged, fed and marched away, through Laos and into North Vietnam.\n\nHe spent time in several jungle camps, held in wooden leg stocks, and he eventually wound up in enemy prisons.\n\nHe got lice, malaria and dysentery and lost 50 pounds. He wore pink-and-gray-striped POW pajamas and rubber sandals, all of which he brought home with him when he was freed.\n\nHe was beaten with bamboo canes and tied up during interrogations.\n\nOne interrogator the Americans named “Cheese” — because he seemed to be the big cheese — was especially cruel.\n\nHe spoke English and sat up on a high chair as he questioned POWs tied on the floor. When he nodded his head, a guard would strike the prisoner with the bamboo cane.\n\nHe had a face like a rat, Ridgeway recalled, and was a “mean . . . sadistical son of a b----.”\n\nRidgeway said he didn’t dwell on the notion that people back home might think he was dead. They would be fine.       "body": "PayPal recently announced that users will soon be able to “instantly” transfer money between its services and their bank accounts, as long as they pay a 25-cent fee per transaction. The move, according to the company, is still in beta for select users and will in the future roll out for eligible Visa or Mastercard debit card holders.\n\nTypically, transactions take a day or two when using PayPal or its peer-to-peer service Venmo. With the new feature, users will be able to choose between these regular transfers, and instant transfers that will allow them to receive their money in “a matter of minutes”, with transactions possibly taking as much as 30 minutes in some cases, according to PayPal.\n\nThe move is reportedly an answer to various up-and-coming competitors who offer similar options. Square Cash, for example, allows users to instantly transfer money into their bank accounts, but charges a 1% fee, meaning PayPal allows customers to save on large transfers.\n\nZelle, another Venmo competitor, is already backed by over 30 U.S. banks, and hasn’t even gone live yet. It promises instant transfers through the banks’ websites and apps, as well as in its standalone app as well. According to reports, Zelle is going to offer cheaper fees, but PayPal has its benefits. According to PayPal’s COO Bill Ready:\n\n    What our customers value is that they know that not only can they use us as a pay anyone service, so – no matter what bank someone banks with or what operating system they’re on – they can easily exchange money with the person on the other end. But along with ubiquity that PayPal provides, we’re offering great protections – the buyer and seller protections are things that have been differentiated in the market for years,\n\nZelle is built on the clearXchange Network, which saw over $16 billion being transacted in Q1 this year. PayPal’s combined services – PayPal, Venmo and Xoom – processed $64 billion in transactions during the same period.\n\nIn the past, PayPal has been a Visa and Mastercard competitor that encouraged customers to link their bank accounts to its platform to bypass large networks. Recently, however, the company seems to have shifted its strategy, TechCrunch notes, as it unveiled partnerships with both Visa and MasterCard last year. The new feature comes partly as a result of these partnerships.\nDigital Currencies: Still Safer, Faster, and Cheaper\n\nAt first glance, these look like horrible news for bitcoiners who, lately, have seen nothing but increasing fees and large numbers of unconfirmed transactions. Recommended transaction fees are now well over the $2 mark, and even though the number of unconfirmed bitcoin transactions is significantly lower than the 200,000 seen last month, the number is still pretty high at 33,000, according to Blockchain.info.\n\nBitcoin’s seemingly endless scaling debate might finally be over now. As reported by CryptoCoinsNews, SegWit2x recently hit the 80% network hashrate threshold it needed. When it comes to fees and transaction times, PayPal’s instant transfers might now be better than bitcoin, at least until the cryptocurrency’s problems are solved.\n\nStill, for those who worry about their privacy and want to control their own money there are plenty of alternatives. Dogecoin, for example, is viable altcoin. Although it might be hard to directly spend dogecoins, the cryptocurrency still has relatively insignificant transaction fees, as well as fast confirmation times.",
