Moreover, the secretion of many hormones depends on our biological clock set on a 24-hour cycle, in the morning we store less fat, which allows us to eat more than in the evening. 50 years ago people were more active, so were burning the starch more easily. Nowadays we spend most of our time sitting in front of a computer, so we do not need as much starch. Should all starches be removed? Without considering the specific individual sensitivities, the choice of starches is of major importance. Indeed, some starchy foods will be digested quickly and therefore be accompanied by a peak of sugar in the blood while others will be digested much more gradually, and will therefore have less impact on this sugar level. If you want to lose weight it is important to control your blood glucose to avoid the excessive secretion of insulin which is associated with storage in the form of fat. High-glycemic starchy foods (which rapidly increase blood glucose) include white pasta, white bread, sandwich bread, rusks, pre-cooked rice, and round rice. Lower-glycemic starchy foods include pulses, cereal loaves, whole or semi-finished rice and pasta, basmati, red and black rice. Also, be careful when cooking your starches, the more they are cooked, the higher their glycemic index, prefer pasta and rice al dente. As part of a weight loss, starchy foods are to be preferred at lunchtime because they are satisfying and gives you energy for the rest of the day. My advice is therefore to limit the intake of starch in the evening. My clients who have removed starchy foods from their evening meals have all been successful in their weight loss. So, what can I eat? As an alternative to starchy foods, legumes (lentils, chickpeas, red beans etc.) can be consumed in the evening. Although high in carbohydrates, their high levels of fiber and vegetable proteins counterbalance this glycemic index and make them very filling, a good way to avoid evening cravings. If you want to eat less in the evening and thus decrease the energy intake, I would also recommend to have a consistent breakfast in the morning and not to skip lunch, this allows to spread the energy intake throughout the day, and to be less hungry at dinner time. The goal is to choose the drinks that contain the least. If we classify the alcohols by family we obtain the following order (from the lighter to the worst): Strong alcohols Wines Beers Cocktails From a strictly energy point of view, the wine is more caloric than beer: about 80 Kcal in 100 g (equivalent to about 10 cl) compared to 50 Kcal in 100 g of beer. But in practice, a glass of wine contains about 12 cl while half pint of beer contains 26-27 cl. Thus, a glass of red wine contains a little more than 80 Kcal while half pint of beer contains about 130 Kcal. On weight loss plans, I do not recommend drinking alcohol at all because alcohol suppresses fat oxidation and adds unnecessary calories to your diet, which either displaces nutritious calories or erases your caloric deficit. However, since no one will respect this piece of advice, here are a few tips you can take into consideration when going out with your friends: -Do not cut your drink with soda. Sodas are stuffed with sugar so even if you take a shot of vodka low in carbohydrates and you mix it with cola, juice or an energy drink, your calorie intake will go through the roof. -Avoid cocktails or alcohol mix that are stuffed with sugar. As we will see later in this book, a glass of Cosmopolitan contains more than 200 calories, a Pina Colada can easily reach 250 calories! -If you want you can cut your drinks with sparkling water, it goes well with most strong alcohol. Carbon dioxide bubbles will also bring ethanol faster in the blood thus accelerating the effects of alcohol, isn’t it why we drink alcohol?! -Add lemon in your drink. This will prevent insulin to reach its peak, hence limit fat formation. -Generally, you should always prefer wine to beer and cocktail. Red wine preferably, being less caloric than white and rosé wine. -And always limit your alcohol consumption to 1 or 2 glasses. Thanks for reading My French Dietitian |

What people usually fail to realize is that the fruit is full of sugar. In this article we will differentiate the fruit juices that you make at home from the one you buy in a supermarket. The juice you make yourself at home: Although they contain vitamins and antioxidants, fruit juice contains just as much sugar and calories as a soda you are looking to avoid, and sometimes even more. Yes, it is hard to believe, isn’t it? Well, no so much. Let’s take the example of one full apple. One large apple contains 23g of sugar and represents 116 calories. It is equivalent to 7 little cubes of sugar). For your information, a can of the world most famous soda contains 39g of sugar and represents 140 calories (10 little cubes of sugar) You would think that it’s better to make an apple juice than drinking the soda. Well, think about it. Do you usually make a juice with only one apple? No, right? You need at least 2 to 3 apples to make a full glass of juice. Your home made fruit juice now contains 46g of sugar and 232 calories (21 little cubes of sugar), which is much more that the famous soda. That’s not it! Fruit juice is missing a lot of the nutrients that makes a whole fruit healthy. Orange juice, for example, does contain Vitamin C and is a decent source of folate, potassium and Vitamin B1. It also contains antioxidants. But it is nutritionally poor compared to whole oranges and other plant foods like vegetables. Mainly because when you make the juice, all the fibers of the fruit are going away. Juices can also make you fat. Indeed our brain usually regulates our energy balance. When we eat something (like solid food), our brains compensate by making us eat less of other foods instead. Our brain works differently for liquid and does not compensate by eating less of other food instead. Because this industrial process removes most of the flavour, the manufacturers add industrial flavours to the juice to compensate. Our advice: Nature gaves us the perfect fruits and vegetables for our nutrition and we are trying to invent new fancy ways to consume them. You want to be healthy? Drinking water before each meal provides a sense of fullness, so not too much food is needed to reach the point of satiety. It's also important to note that drinking too much water before eating will dilute your digestive juices and alter your good digestion. One glass is reasonable. I'm a registered Dietitian in France and Cyprus. I'll try to make a post on veg proteins soon then :-) |
