| body |

___ ### Fundamental constants When you think about fundamental constants in nature, like Planck constant, you quickly realize that those are really small numbers. Then you ask yourself, but why that exact number and what if I can change it somehow? Would Universe stay more or less the same? The answer is that we actually don't know for sure, why constants have those particular values, but one thing we know, if you change one of them even for a tiny bit, Universe will look totally different. Because of this, we say that Universe is fine tuned in a sense that every single constant has just the right value. So, who set those values? Is it God? Saying that it is God who is behind this mystery gives us relief but only for a moment, now you have to define God and that's a harder problem to solve. ### We are lucky One possible explanation for the Fine-tuned Universe, which I'm a fan of, is that there is actually 10^500 Universes created after the Big Bang. When you have that much Universes, each one having different properties (fundamental constants), basic probability theory tells us that it is very likely that there will be at least one Universe in which constants are just right for complex life to emerge. We are happy to live in one such Universe! There might be other Universes unlike ours, with totally different properties but still with right conditions that allow complexity to emerge. Huge majority of Universes might be totally boring without atoms, elements, planets and galaxies like ours. Just cloud of particles and who knows what. Nothing really interesting happens in those Universes. But in some Universes, everything is just right, and the fact that you and me exist proves it. Appreciate how unique this place is. Who knows how many places there are, that are not even close to what we have here. Cheers! |

| body |

____ ## Short intro Turns out our Universe is made up of particles and antiparticles. Antiparticles are basically the same as ordinary particles except that they have an opposite charge. For a long time we were convinced that everything in the Universe is made up of same type of particles. Then in the 90s scientists discovered that for every particle there is a corresponding antiparticle. For example electron's antimatter counterpart is called positron, and just as ordinary matter positron and antimatter proton called antiproton can form antihydrogen. Antihydrogen was first detected in 90s, and successfully trapped using vacuum, magnetic fields and cooling in 2010. When ordinary matter and antimatter touch, they annihilate and turn into pure energy following the Einstein's famous equation E = mc^2 As long as you keep antimatter separated from matter by vacuum nothing happens. ____ ## Antimatter planets in our Solar system? What if not all of the planets in our Solar system are made of ordinary matter? What if some planet is composed out of antimatter? They are separated from each other by vacuum, preventing them to annihilate and vanish in the cloud of pure violent energy. There is no way we can tell if a planet or object in space is antimatter or not. Not before we approach close enough to cause explosion. Or maybe there is way to detect antimatter objects, comments are welcome! Photon, for example, will annihilate only with anti-photon, if we shoot a laser beam of anti-photons from Jupiter, will we be able to see them on Earth? ## Antimatter asteroids and commets? What if there is an antimatter asteroid heading to Earth. In this case we could be easily deceived by the size of an asteroid, thinking for example that it is too small to cause any serious damage. But we don't count for it's destructive power when antimatter from asteroid collide with matter on Earth. Annihilation will in fact start as soon it enters the upper layers of Earths atmosphere. ## Antimatter aliens? What if we encounter and alien civilization made of antimatter? How would we get in touch with them :D |

| body | ___ # Intro This post reflects my personal point of view, based on what I have learned so far. It might change in the future in which case I will be more than happy to write this article again from a new perspective. # Quantum realm When you scale down to a size of an atom, world around you suddenly starts to behave differently. Things become really strange and reality becomes hard to comprehend. Electron, which you would imagine as a particle rotating around atom nucleus, always having speed and position, isn't particle at all. Well, that's not completely true and here is why. Universe chose not to put everything on a finite position. Instead, Universe likes to play with probabilities. So instead saying your electron can be found at position defined by (x, y, z) coordinates, electrons position is somewhere in the area of probability defined by the wave function. Some parts of this area have higher probability to contain electron, other have lower.
 _Probability cloud depiction_
Areas in this image, which are darker, have higher probability to contain electron and brighter ones can rarely contain an electron. But wait! So electron is somewhere inside this area, and is most likely to be inside those dark spots? The answer is no! Electron is actually in all these places at once and nowhere. Only when you really observe the electron, universe decides where it should be located. Scientists call this collapse of a wave function, and I would call it **creation on demand**. So it became a particle just by act of observation. You wanted to see it, and Universe gave you a particle. # Universe is stingy and super fast As you saw previously, there is no electron, there is just a probability assigned to it's possible location. If there is nothing to observe it, it will stay like this forever, just a probability information, nothing more. Why I insulted Universe saying that it's stingy. Universe doesn't give you anything unless you ask for it (look at it). **You are an observer and without you, Universe you know does not exist.** # Universe is more that we can see Human senses are limited, they are good enough for survival, not for seeing the whole picture. Our sight is limited to only a part of light spectrum. Having this said, Universe is more that we can see with our eyes, and more than we can measure with our instruments. What lies behind this beautiful world and runs everything is impossible for us to discover. The reality we see is simply a response. We query Universe and it gives us response which we interpret as our reality. If we query it in a different way it will produce different response (reality) but we never get to see the full reality, only what we can query. |

| body | # Non-biological aliens Aliens are usually depicted as small biological creatures with big eyes and very human like anatomy. If we take into account how long it would take them to arrive to Earth from their home planet and to which conditions would their bodies be exposed during the trip, the chances of survival for the crew would be miniature without some advanced hibernation technology to slow down metabolism and other processes and protect their bodies from long exposure to low gravity and higher levels of radiation. Very advanced civilization capable of interstellar travel would have probably switched over to a more endurable and efficient type of body, composed of meta-materials and heavily based on advanced nano technology. They would probably totally abandon biological form of body given it's weaknesses. Transition would probably be smooth, with gradual improvements to biological form, making them cyborgs and merging with artificial intelligence. Very soon this process would lead to total transition to artificial bodies. The question is, would individual aliens be independent, controlling their own behavior, or would we encounter some kind of swarm intelligence like ants, bees and termites. Or maybe, they would all be one singular intelligence controlling every single alien. # Interstellar travel Influence of Hollywood movies might lead you to imagine a huge alien spaceship 'slowly' approaching Earth from interstellar space.

But this is probably not the most likely way of interstellar travel. Why sending a huge spacecraft when you can send small nano cells capable of self-replication, efficient energy management, carrying powerful artificial intelligence inside. Those nano cells can be sent to many different parts of galaxy using technology similar to [Solar sail](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solar_sail), which is a propulsion by radiation pressure generated by starlight or powerful laser pointed directly at sail carrying nano cells.

Those alien probes or nano cells would be able to traverse galaxy and intergalactic space at an amazing speed. Once probes are deployed on a destination planet they will begin to replicate and possibly perform other transformations in attempt to further explore new planet. Which form they would eventually take is questionable, but they would probably in a very short time upload alien AI to the internet, so it can further explore and learn about us. Eventually if it decide to, alien AI will attempt to communicate with us. Until that point we would probably have not known that alien nano probes have landed on Earth. What their main goals would be here on Earth and in Solar system altogether, is a question for another post. For now, I hope you gained a new, different view on how alien visit can look like, more in the upcoming posts. |

| body |

--- ## ~~Artificial~~ Synthetic Intelligence Wanted to write a few words on **Artificial Intelligence**, and just as I started to write the title of this post I realized I don't really like the aforementioned term. After a few tries I finally found an alternative term which, I think, better describes what we are taking about here.

No surprise, there is already an article on Wikipedia on Synthetic Intelligence, and the first sentence explains why term *Artificial Intelligence* is misleading and flawed. ## We are creating REAL Intelligence The Intelligence we are trying to create is real. Maybe we can say, we are creating artificial brain, e.g. translating neural network of the real human brain into a hardware or software, but the intelligence is real! ## Moving on Intelligence that we have, is a result of a process called Natural Evolution. Every living being on the planet is an accumulated bulk of mutations that happen to be good enough to survive in this environment. The more complex the environment is, the more astounding the results are. Happily, environment we live in is complex enough for Intelligence to arise, as a tool of survival. Currently, human intelligence is only created through process of natural evolution. The main problem with this is time. It took natural evolution hundreds of millions of years to achieve this. To create Intelligence we have today. Now the Intelligence is trying to create Intelligence again. ## Intelligence on a quest Intelligence creating Intelligence. It's crazy, and recursive in nature. And humans need time to wrap their head around recursion. But how does Intelligence create something? Intelligence uses what it already knows to create new things combining known pieces into something new. Unlike Intelligence, Evolution likes to experiment a lot, simultaneously testing and slightly modifying number of solutions endlessly repeating the process until it reaches the goal. To be slightly technical, it can cover a large search space, and find totally unexpected solutions unlike anything seen before. Humans are now trying to reverse engineer the work of natural evolution, hoping to discover secrets of human intelligence. Usually very complex things that we don't understand might appear to be magical to us, and human intelligence certainly one of those things. It's considered magic until we figure it out. ## Narrow it down We have been successful in creation of Narrow Intelligence so far. Narrowing down the scope of things to only a few, gives great results, and those systems easily outperform human counterparts. But fusing more specialized AI systems into one that can do multiple things at a superhuman level is still a challenge. It is questionable if this is the right way to achieve General Intelligence. Are we just a bunch of specialized parts working together to create an illusion of intelligence? ## Complex environment We are simulating process of natural evolution for quite some time. It is great for optimization in a huge search space where non of the conventional search optimization algorithms can help. Environments that we simulate are usually quite simple with not so many parameters included. But what if we substantially increase the complexity of an environment we are simulating. Will evolution create anything that might look to us as an intelligent system. ## How do you simulate an environment Environment is usually simulated by something called fitness function. It decides how close a solution is to an optimal solution for a given environment. It takes solution genome as input an returns a value which determines how good a solution is. However, in real life, we are not selected only by what is written in our DNA.. A lot of it depends on what we do and how we make decisions. And it all happens in parallel on the cellular level. Nature is a powerful hardware for parallel execution and can run evolution with a great level of detail. Something we cannot in software, without introducing simplifications and reducing complexity of an environment. ## Wrapping up Those are some of my thought on Intelligence creation and Evolution. Lots of questions still remain unanswered but we are moving forward and hopefully the day will come when secrets of human intelligence will be unraveled. |
