body1. What is the brand name of your Best Mobile Network Infrastructure entry? Please note the name given here will be used in all awards publicity and materials. (approx. 25 words)   5G-PON   2. Is this a joint entry? If so, who are the partnering organisations? (approx. 25 words)   SOLiD & HFR & SunwaveTec & Coweaver   3. Please confirm that the product or equipment was, or will be, commercially available and in live service (carrying live traffic or customers) during 2017 and in which markets? (approx. 100 words)   5G-PON, an advanced fronthaul system developed by SK Telecom, has been applied to the company’s commercial LTE network in 227 central office terminals (COTs).     4. If this product or service is a new release or update to an existing version, please explain the key differences and advances available in this release compared to the previous version. Please note that it is only the new release enhanced features or functions that the judges will consider. (approx. 100 words)   5G-PON is a newly released system specialized for mobile fronthaul.   With the aim to provide customers with greater speed and quality of network service, operators are making constant investments to expand their mobile infrastructure including transport network. Against this backdrop, SK Telecom developed and applied an intelligent mobile fronthaul solution/system, 5G-PON, that offers both cost-effective and stable solution through technologies including Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) technology, Passive Optical Network (PON) technology and tunable SFP (Small Form-Factor Pluggable).     5. Please confirm that your entry is based on open industry standards (approx. 100 words)   Since 5G-PON provides transparent physical layer transport connections, it supports diverse LTE fronthaul protocols/interfaces including CPRI, OBSAI and ORI. Going forward, the system can support the Ethernet protocol, which will be used by SD-RAN of the 5G network.     6. Give a brief overview of the entry here. This is for the benefit of the judges to help them understand the broad concepts of your entry (approx. 100 words)   5G-PON is an intelligent mobile fronthaul transport system that allows operators to expand transport network infrastructure in the most cost-effective and stable manner through technologies including Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) technology, Passive Optical Network (PON) technology and tunable SFP (Small Form-Factor Pluggable).   Through the application of PON structure, 5G-PON can be easily installed, operated and maintained. The system requires no power supply units and bulky enclosures for outdoor installation, works without power, can be remotely controlled via optical wavelength, and requires no maintenance cost.   Moreover, it ensures stability through the application of ring topology and does not incur any type of power-related failure.     7. To what extent does your new approach to the mobile network infrastructure and the technology deployed change the economics of the mobile industry and especially for the mobile operator? (approx. 250 words)   5G-PON dramatically reduces both CAPEX and OPEX for mobile operators by providing the most cost-effective way to install, operate and maintain transport network. SK Telecom is already witnessing a great amount of cost reductions from the deployment of the system. Compared to legacy transport equipment, the cost for installation of a transport network has been reduced by 50% and cost for operation and maintenance has gone down by 70%.   Moreover, built on standard technologies used by global equipment makers, 5G-PON can be easily deployed by LTE network service providers across the globe that are operating a traditional transport network with ring topology. 5G-PON, once deployed, will realize huge cost savings for operators.   Going forward, since 5G-PON also supports the Ethernet protocol, it not only provides a backhaul for Wi-Fi access points and femtocells, but can also be applied to the upcoming 5G network as Ethernet is being considered as one of the protocols for 5G RAN.     8. How does your solution protect existing investments made by the mobile operator in infrastructure to date? (approx. 250 words)   5G-PON is an innovative transport system that enables mobile operators to build base stations in the most cost-effective and timely manner, while having no negative effects on the existing infrastructure.   That is, to expand network capacity in a certain area (within its network coverage), operators can easily deploy a base station utilizing their existing fiber infrastructure, thereby saving a great amount of cost for installation. 5G-PON also allows operators to cover new areas with the least amount of cost.     9. Please describe what is unique, new or innovative about your infrastructure or solution (approx. 250 words)   5G-PON offers a solution to one of the biggest challenges mobile operators are facing nowadays in terms of expanding their network infrastructure/capacity to accommodate consumers’ ever-growing appetite for data. Based on advanced WDM, PON and tunable SFP technologies, SK Telecom has developed an intelligent mobile front haul system that minimizes both CAPEX and OPEX, while ensuring a powerful performance and high stability.   5G-PON is composed of Central Office Terminal (COT), Remote Node (RN) and Tunable Small Form Factor Pluggable (TSFP). COT is located at the BBU hotel that performs wavelength translation for WDM transmission; RN, a passive optical wavelength router, is can be placed an indoor/outdoor environment; and TSFP is installed in RRH.   COT, the only active equipment within the system monitors and controls RNs and TSFP. The wavelength tunable functionalities are implemented via TSFP that complies with the SFP standard. TSFP modules provide performance-related data, including transmit optical power, received optical power, assigned wavelength and operation temperature. In addition, these modules are designed and validated for operation in industrial temperature range (-40°C to +80°C).   Upon detecting fiber failure, COT performs ring protection switching to isolate the location within 50ms.   As mentioned above, 5G-PON can be constructed in a protected ring architecture supporting up to 4 RNs. (And each RN can support up to four sub-RNs to build an even denser network at low-cost)     10. Is your solution applicable to multiple markets on a global scale? (approx. 250 words)   5G-PON can be applied to any country or region by any mobile operator across the globe. Mobile operators in countries with large territories are facing challenges due to the high-cost of fiber infrastructure.   With 5G-PON, these operators will be able to expand their network capacity in the most cost-effective and timely manner as 5G-PON minimizes the installation of new fiber infrastructure and dramatically reduces the cost of operation and maintenance. Similarly, 5G-PON provides a powerful tool for operators that lag behind their competitors in terms of fiber infrastructure.   Moreover, the global mobile industry is moving rapidly towards realizing the 5G network system, which will be characterized by ultra-low latency, high reliability, and ultra-fast speed. 5G-PON can help operators who are currently using microwave (wireless) backhaul infrastructure to build out 5G networks with the least amount of time and cost.     11. Give evidence of the global market success or take up rate of your technology (approx. 250 words)   5G-PON is implemented in 227 central office terminals which accounts for 10% SK Telecom’s business, reducing a great amount of costs and time when managing LTE systems. In 2018, 5G-PON will be handling additional equipment and services and will grow to managing 30% of all network at SK Telecom.

bodySince the introduction of mobile phones in the 1980s, wireless technology has undergone major changes over a period of about 10 years. The main feature of the first generation wireless technology was analog voice, and the second generation was 2G, the digitization of voice. The third generation includes data access and the fourth generation features ultra-high-speed data and end-to-end IP networking technology (now available in highly industrialized countries).   These network upgrades were needed to meet bandwidth demands from growing consumer users and to enable new services to be provided over networks. As all service providers know, bandwidth demand continues to grow at an average rate of 45% per year, and this demand will be further fueled by the billions of object Internet devices that connect networks over the next few years.   Service providers are also looking for ways to earn revenue and compete with key competitors in this area. These are some of the key factors affecting the next generation of mobile standards known as IMT-2020, or more commonly known as 5G networks.   Unlike previous evolutions, 5G does not completely replace 4G, but it works like 4G in the early stages of implementation and complements 4G. The first 5G standards, known as non-standalone mode (NSA), are expected to be completed by the end of May 2018, and 5G is expected to be 100 times faster per cell area, 10 times slower, Density. All three of these features will enable countless new services, applications and business models when combined. When combined with all newly connected Internet devices, the model will have more than 1,000 times more data flowing through the 5G network, both user area data and control area data.   A 5G network is possible when there is ongoing network evolution as follows. Implementation of Software Defined Networking (SDN) in which the data area of the application area, control area, telemetry area, and packet transmission scheme is completely decomposed into different entities. Evolution of Network Architecture from Existing Network Architecture to Virtualized Networking Architecture with Network Functional Virtualization (NFV) The desire for open networking application programming interfaces (APIs) and the use of data models and the desire to discard existing protocols and managed objects The need for more intelligent and more automated network operation and network control Introducing multi-access edge computing (MEC) and deterministic transport technology to solve the low latency problem when connecting contents and users In all network evolution, especially in the case of redevelopment network scenarios where existing sets of networking equipment are operating, it is almost impossible to realize the next generation network through a strategy of full replacement. This applies when operators begin to introduce 5G mobile networks into existing LTE or advanced LTE networks. The three flows of 5G network evolution are expected to be as follows. Flow 1 (currently underway): IT Convergence and Telecommunications Company (Telco) Focus on Telcos Making Investments in Telecom for Cloud Flow 2 (after 2018): Focus on the evolution of 5G approach to investments in networking infrastructures for large bandwidth, high-capacity, and large volumes Flow 3 (since 2020): Focus on distributed intelligence in networks where artificial intelligence, machine learning, and advanced autonomous networking developments enable what is impossible in networks and applications Especially with the adoption of MEC platform technology, I think that both wireless and wireline will be mainly virtualized and distributed in different telco cloud network sectors in the target architecture view (see Figure 1 below). From an operator's point of view, I think there will be three networking cloud segments, including an access cloud, a local cloud, and a central cloud. Moving from the central cloud to the access cloud means that handling lower latency application traffic and different MEC platform conventions will be realized in both the access cloud and the local cloud, respectively. Some key features of this target architecture are:   Infrastructure & Networking Fabric: Packet forwarding protocol agreement will be realized here. As the path intelligence moves into the software data domain, the networking fabric will be simplified and utilize a common set of protocols for WAN, inter-data (data and data), center communications, and intra (data) data center communications. Apart from protocol conformance and simplicity, this network area, also known as 'network based', is an advanced packet networking technology that can maintain a very low packet error loss rate and provide a deterministic movement guaranteeing low latency delivery in a consistent manner .   Distributed Data Plane: In this network plane, we focus on network programability and also focus on the common data plane stack realization across multiple different cloud segments. Network protocols and path intelligence can be dynamically programmed here and can be resiliently changed throughout the life cycle operation of network functions. Another important aspect of this lower layer is the open networking data model that allows for maximum code reuse despite variations in base program network I / O technology in the infrastructure / networking fabric plane and the joint programability API implementation. Integrated Control Plane: The control plane and user domain decomposition began with the delivery system and are introduced separately into 4G Evolved Packet Core (EPC) in 3GPP Rel-14. With 3GPP Rel-15, both the 5G radio access network (RAN) and the 5G next generation core (NGC) are also defined with this decomposition structure. Control software innovation to realize an integrated control plane framework in which higher-level autonomous end-to-end networking control can be executed by having real-time processing and non-real-time processing elements in it when all network function control plane elements are disassembled Let it start. Such autonomous network control includes the following. 2) dynamic movement of network functions between cloud segments based on network load; and 3) cloud-based mobile packet core resources based on user patterns. Total autonomic optimization of cloud-based RAN resources with   Intelligence, Automation, Planning, Management & Revenue Creation: A wide variety of software modules will be realized in the network plane, where it becomes possible for operators to help their operators differentiate themselves in competition. These software modules will use technologies such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, enhanced autonomic networking technologies, and flexible policy engine implementation. By combining some of these software modules together, operators can enable what was impossible in their own network era. Deterministic Networking in 5G Packet Transmission Networks   As discussed briefly above, an enhanced packet transmission technique will be introduced into the 5G network transmission scheme to enable the following at the same time.   1) Provides reliable packet transmission and low latency with a low rate of packet error loss in a consistent manner. 2) Provides statistical multiplexing and grooming, and oversubscription of low priority traffic. 3) It enables to support both hard slicing and soft slicing in transport network slicing.   Advanced Ethernet technology known as IEEE 802.1 Time Sensitive Networking (TSN) can be utilized in the network to realize the three networking requirements outlined above. A summary of the component specifications of the 802.1 TSN is given below. Each TSN component is capable of delivering deterministic backhaul for 5G (and LTE-A Pro) packetized front-end (Fronthaul) networks as well as SLA-guaranteed network slicing in mobile wholesale networks and for highly reliable low- backhaul. & lt; / RTI & gt;   The TSN component criterion is primarily a major enhancement to the IEEE 802.1Q functionality, and some components of the TSN feature have been incorporated into the IEEE 802.1Q-2014 specification and additional fixes were included in the year 2015/2016.   Also. The 802.1 specification has been improved (eg, an IEEE project on ongoing frame replication and removal) and there are specific improvements to the 802.3 specification (eg, Frame Preemption 802.3br with 802.3 improvements).   TSN component criteria fall into four main categories:   1) Provides timing synchronization within the deterministic Ethernet network. 2) Guarantee bounded low-latency Ethernet payload delivery. 3) Provides a robust reliability transport mechanism within the Ethernet network. 4) Management and control through open networking APIs and data models.

bodyNew solution for distribution network to deliver seamless communications service SK Telecom successfully deploys 5G-PON, next generation technology for RAN Radio Access network - The solution serves both wireless and wired connectivity such as LTE, 5G and broadband access, making it easy to deliver a broader coverage of 5G services - It requires smaller devices and equipment installable in outdoor settings, delivering a higher level of satisfaction to the premises Will continue to build stronger capabilities in advanced network technology necessary for 5G rollout Seoul, Korea, November 17, 2017 ? SK Telecom (NYSE: SKM) today announced that it successfully deployed 5G-PON(Passive Optical Network), next generation technology for distribution networks, that can deliver both LTE and 5G communications services. The mobile communications network is a collection of interconnected networks throughout the country. Distribution networks refer to networks connecting base stations with RRHs and antennas installed at the premises. Unlike the conventional distribution networks, where different types of network are required for 3G, LTE and broadband access, 5G-PON solution delivers multiple communications services using a single network. The solution will facilitate the process of delivering a broader coverage for the 5G rollout by simply installing base stations and antennas without additional networks. Also, it requires smaller devices and equipment than the existing distribution technology and operates without additional power supply. The conventional device need to be installed inside the premises for power supply. 5G-PON solution, however, can be built in outdoor settings as it requires no power supply, delivering a higher level of satisfaction to the premises. In addition, the solution can be constructed in a protected ring architecture. Therefore, even if line is disconnected, the communications services are delivered seamlessly using the other line. SK Telecom will roll out 5G-PON service in 85 areas nationwide including Seoul, Busan, Daegu, Daejeon and Gwangju, and expand the deployment further ahead. It particularly expects that the quality of service will get improved in rural areas thanks to the easier deployment of 5G-PON. The solution is the result of SK Telecom’s collaboration with local vendors, such as Solid, HFR, SunwaveTec and Coweaver, which have strong capabilities in optical communications technology. SK Telecom will propose the solution to the 5G network standards of the ITU-T. “With 5G-PON built on our own specifications, we secured opportunities to improve the quality of service and lay the foundation for a successful rollout of 5G,” said Choi Seung-won, Head of Infrastructure Strategy Division, SK Telecom. “We will continue to develop our capabilities for advanced network technology and operation necessary for 5G rollout.”
