| body | Western democracy wants bitcoin. Venezuela needs it. I woke up this Monday morning like any other, ready to work on my crypto startups, when I received a message from my client in Venezuela. Without light there is no electricity. And without electricity there is no bitcoin. Venezuela first came on my radar when the then undisputed President Maduro launched the Petro cryptocurrency; a dubious project purporting to be a decentralised ledger technology pegged to a centralised supply of oil reserves (297 billion barrels). The idea in my mind associated with the countless other ICO scams around that time and I remained focused on my own projects at hand. So I ploughed on without giving any more thought to the Petro. I even missed out on this hilarious press conference which looks like Will Ferrell in Talladega Nights. Hold on, trying to figure out how to premine the shit out of this thing Work eventually led me to re-launch Bitcart, a startup I began in 2014 as a service for people to live off bitcoin by serving as a gateway to Amazon. When suddenly the trend moved to Venezuela. Overnight my volume in Venezuela became 10–15% of all my global business. Now this is interesting, I thought to myself. Genuine people needing an alternative monetary system in the midst of economic chaos. Suddenly I had an interest to become fixated with the global events unwinding in Latin America. Flash backs from a history of genocide and mass corruption at the hands of centralised authority and power dynamics between the likes of the Cartel de los soles, a contrast to the stories from a long time ago of a Venezuelan nation much richer than my own. 10 January, 2019 - another day goes by where I gain a new Venezuelan customer. Google Translate is now bookmarked on my work device and set to Spanish. I have a direct feed to the voices on the ground. Businessmen, merchants, internet geeks and average people who have all quit their jobs to earn a living with bitcoin on the internet. The 9 o'clock news appears in the background with images of President Maduro's inauguration. The media were having a field day because the Irish nationalist party Sinn Feinn had attended the celebration as one of few European supporters. It seems as though everyday since the news programme have featured Maduro, who is serving his 6th consecutive year of Presidency facing accusations of crimes against humanity and election fraud by the international community. The narrative consistent with each passing comment in the mass media - The moral crusade of the Swift network sanctioning Venezuela is winning. While all I can see is the promotion of poverty led by superhero USA at the peril of yet another corrupt politician. Trust me, I wear blue and white stars on my face. In a Post-Truth world one must look beyond the political rhetorical at something much deeper to know right from wrong which has been hiding in plain sight, and that's the human collateral damage from the incessant desire for power of our supposed leaders. Trump and Maduro have that much in common I'm sure. Night turns to morning in the capital of Caracas in it's natural state. My Venezuelan client has regained power on his phone and carries on his Monday working as usual from his phone. In the time it has taken me to write this blog post, less than 1 hour, he has earned around $5 of bitcoin, the equivalent to a month salary for the average Venezuelan. Not a big gain but enough for him and his family to survive. At least for some there's bitcoin. As with any problem, there are always solutions. Shout out to grudles for posting this tutorial back in February on how to make offline bitcoin transactions. You can purchase all this stuff on Amazon with bitcoin through bitcart.io "Completely Offline Bitcoin Transactions" https://medium.com/r/?url=https%3A%2F%2Flink.medium.com%2FC26zoH5CYU If you would like to donate directly to Venezuelan's then check out this campaign I found online: https://airdropvenezuela.org/ I wouldn't share anyone's public key without their consent, and even then probably not in these circumstances, but if there happens to be any Venezuelan's reading you are welcome to do so yourself in the comments section. --- Hola amigos de venezuela bienvenidos a Bitcart el lugar donde puedes comprar y vender tus tarjetas amazon por bitcoin. | body | Strasbourg, 4th October 2018 — The EU Parliament have this week passed resolution Distributed ledger technologies and blockchains: building trust with disintermediation Spearheaded by Greek MEP Eva Kaili, a major motivation for introducing the resolution is to empower and protect EU citizens and startups in respect to centralised banking, data protection including the ‘right to be forgotten’ and to serve as non-imposing and transparent rules under which a blockchain industry can flourish. An example of a need for more efficiency, according to Ms. Kaili, is the banking sector which imposes 135 billion euro in hidden fee’s per annum in the EU alone. The resolution makes the following recommendations: 1. For member States to establish non-profit “innovation hubs” to promote research, education and training among their citizens 2. The introduction of blockchain courses and curricula among universities 3. For the Commission and ECB to identify dangers for the public and incorporate cryptocurrencies into the European payment system. 4. To develop technical standards for Distributed Ledger Technologies 5. Conduct a clear analysis of legal enforceability of smart contracts among EU member States 6. Decentralise the storage of EU citizens’ data to prevent the misuse of data 7. Decentralise infrastructure to ensure no monopolies are held, for instance the storage of nodes and servers 8. Use blockchain for tracking EU funding to achieve greater accountability 9. Evaluate blockchain-based evoting systems as a use case for the EU 10. The creation of funding opportunities from the EIB, EIF and EFSI 2.0 11. The creation of an Observatory for the Monitoring of ICOs and clarification of utility tokens and security tokens as unique asses classes 12. For any regulations on blockchain to remove barriers and founded on principles of technology neutral and business model-neutral For the EU to achieve success with becoming a contender in the development of the global blockchain market, it must ensure a non-restricted passageway for initiatives. By calling on member States to actively protect the rights of citizens, the Parliament takes an affirmative position and leading role in adopting real use cases for blockchain technology. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Y3Yh6eqWR0 Interview with Dimitrios Psarrakis of the EU Parliament about the resolution Two concerns raised during the debates were around the ‘right to be forgotten’ and GDPR compliance in reference to public ledgers. The ‘right to be forgotten’ is protected under Article 17 GDPR which obligates the erasure of personal data at the request of any EU citizen. It is held that information on the chain can only go forwards and not backwards and therefore personal information could not be deleted. However storing information on, say, the bitcoin public ledger using Proof of Work is limited to 180 bytes or so which makes it ineffective to store personal data. Personal data does not have to be stored on-chain and it can still be encrypted. Another alternative for verifying data without exposing it is to only store a reference to information using Proof of Existence. Another alternative again is to use privacy coins. EU citizens have options when interacting with blockchain and at least they should be educated in understanding what personal information they should put on-chain. For the Parliament to recommend cryptocurrencies to be incorporated into European payment systems and protecting data resonates well with the Festy project. Not only should merchants use cryptocurrencies over the Euro, consumers should boycott Mastercard and Visa and take back control over their data. As a European company fighting the battle for data ownership, we commend the Parliament for adopting this resolution and respecting human rights. Consumers have become digital gold for the transaction data they accumulate on a day to day basis. How this data is governed and controlled is paramount to the development of digital payments. Convenience and privacy are constantly at odds with each other for consumers. With wearable and contactless payments, Festy is both a convenient way to pay while retaining control over your data. Through the platform consumers can choose to sell the data they produce from payments and control who has access. | body | We had the pleasure to organise a Bit-Show session at Integrity during Defcon, Las Vegas. The session was entitled, “Protecting and Promoting Human Rights with Blockchain Design”. Our CEO Graham de Barra sat down with Michael Tidwell, engineer of Tierion to explore the applications for Proof of Existence in the protection of health and privacy. Tierion allows its users to create a verifiable and immutable record of any data on the Blockchain. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SSaLUZ78q_k&t=2s Festy has a welfare and medical use case at festivals, where punters can upload emergency medical information (such as allergies, friends and family emergency contact information, substance use, etc) on their wristbands. First responders to an emergency would be able to decrypt this vital information and help save lives. In developing this on the Festy platform, Proof of Existence has emerged as a technology that can record medical events. The day of events, situated in a crypto mansion, also featured Q&A and banter with Fluffy Pony. Perhaps the funniest introductions at a crypto gathering were given by comedian Mike Salvi. More of this please! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1501ZRe9e3g We would like to thank Michael Tidwell and all guests for their thought provoking contribution throughout the day and our hosts International Security Evaluators. Tierion allows its users to create a verifiable and immutable record of any data on the Blockchain.\n\nhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SSaLUZ78q_k&t=2s\n\n\n\nFesty has a welfare and medical use case at festivals, where punters can upload emergency medical information (such as allergies, friends and family emergency contact information, substance use, etc) on their wristbands. First responders to an emergency would be able to decrypt this vital information and help save lives. In developing this on the Festy platform, Proof of Existence has emerged as a technology that can record medical events.\n\nThe day of events, situated in a crypto mansion, also featured Q&A and banter with Fluffy Pony. Perhaps the funniest introductions at a crypto gathering were given by comedian Mike Salvi. More of this please!\n\nhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1501ZRe9e3g\n\nWe would like to thank Michael Tidwell and all guests for their thought provoking contribution throughout the day and our hosts International Security Evaluators.\n\nLearn more about how Festy protects transactional data and promotes medical welfare among its consumers at www.festy.ie\n\n.jpeg)",

| body | Festy, a NFC cryptocurrency wristband, made cryptocurrency payments possible for festival goers at Ireland’s largest music festival Electric Picnic last weekend. Festy introduces “Contactless Crypto” the world’s first NFC tag that makes cryptocurrency payments possible with a simple tap. This brings crypto closer to the masses and makes it even easier to pay. The first application of this technology is a wristband for festivals and private events. Electric Picnic was held in Ireland at the weekend and 50 festival goers wore the wristband and could pay using Festy. “By doing the proof of concept at such a large and well-known festival, it has put us months ahead in R&D” says founder, Graham de Barra. Users can top-up their Festy wristbands and withdraw using Dash and other cryptocurrencies. Festy will be tested at a number of upcoming events. The Irish startup is one to look out for, having won Silicon Republic’s Startup of the Week last month. “The most exciting part is being able to switch an entire festival of say 60,000 people, from fiat to crypto with one contract. This type of adoption will drive cryptocurrencies through the roof.” If you would like to be among the first to try out Festy at your event, please contact [email protected] |
