Dalam sekejap, kabar itu sampai ke telinga Umar bin Khaththab, Khalifah Pemerintahan Islam saat itu.\n\n ![image](https://img.esteem.ws/z3j56tzjx4.jpg)\n\nSadar akan betapa seriusnya kabar tersebut, sang Khalifah mengambil keputusan besar: dia akan terjun ke medan perang, memimpin pasukan muslim melawan Persia. Dan selama Khalifah pergi berperang, Ali bin Abi Thalib akan menduduki kursi Khalifah.\n\nNamun keputusan tersebut ditentang oleh para penasehatnya. Mengirim Khalifah pergi berperang terlalu besar resikonya. Solusi yang lebih baik adalah mengirim seorang panglima yang hebat untuk memimpin pasukan muslim. Sementara itu, Khalifah tetap di Madinah.\n\nSolusi tersebut disetujui. Maka ditunjuklah seorang kesatria berjuluk “Singa yang Menyembunyikan Kukunya”, yaitu Saad bin Abi Waqqash. Saad bin Abi Waqqash pun berangkat beserta 30.000 prajurit muslim menuju Qadasiyah (Irak) untuk menyambut serangan 100.000 prajurit Persia. Sebuah pertempuran dahsyat bernama Perang Qadasiyah akan tercatat sesaat lagi.\n\n***\n\nBila membahas perang-perang selama era Rasul dan Khulafaur Rasyidin, ada sebuah pola yang paling sering berulang, yaitu:\n\n1. Serangan diinisiasi oleh pihak lawan dengan jumlah pasukan yang besar (entah itu Persia, Romawi, Quraisy, Yahudi, atau pihak lainnya).\n\n2. Pasukan muslim menyambut serangan itu, tetapi dengan jumlah pasukan yang lebih sedikit.\n\n3. Pasukan muslim menang.\n\nDemikian pula dengan perang melawan Persia kali ini —yang kemudian dikenal dengan Perang Qadasiyah— pola yang sama kembali terulang. Pasukan muslim kembali menang. Maka kalau aku bahas dari sisi perangnya saja, rasanya akan membosankan karena tidak ada sesuatu yang baru.\n\nAlih-alih, aku akan membahas sebuah kebijakan Saad bin Abi Waqqas yang menjadi salah satu alasan kemenangannya dalam Perang Qadasiyah. Aku rasa ini sangat menarik untuk direnungkan dan dipraktekkan, terutama bagi kita generasi millennial. Mari simak.\n\n***\n\nSaad bin Abi Waqqash –atau kita sebut saja Saad— dan pasukan muslim memulai perjalanan panjangnya dari Madinah ke Qadasiyah.\n\nBila dilihat di google maps, waktu tempuh Madinah-Qadasiyah itu 284 jam dengan berjalan kaki. Itu dengan catatan si pejalan kaki sama sekali tidak beristirahat, alias jalan non-stop. Namun bila sudah ditambah waktu istirahat dan berkemah, waktu tempuhnya bisa berkali-kali lipat lebih lama, bahkan bisa berminggu-minggu.\n\nBerhubung moda transportasi darat terbaik saat itu adalah kuda dan unta, Saad dan pasukan muslim harus melewati waktu selama itu untuk sampai ke Qadasiyah. Bahkan bisa jadi lebih lama lagi. Pasalnya, medan perjalanan ke Qadasiyah bukan berupa aspal atau semen yang mulus, tetapi berbukit, berbatu, dan berpasir. Terbayang kan sulitnya.\n\nSelama perjalanan, Saad memiliki kebiasaan yang unik, yaitu kirim-kiriman surat dengan Khalifah Umar bin Khaththab.\n\nJangan bayangkan sepasang kekasih yang sedang kirim-kiriman surat yang isinya cuma rayuan manis-manja. Soalnya, isi surat mereka benar-benar seputar kondisi perang. Ketika Saad menulis surat, dia akan menuliskan kondisi pasukannya dengan sedetil-detilnya, bahkan sampai posisi duduk dan selonjor pasukannya.\n\nSetelah selesai ditulis, surat itu dikirimkan ke Khalifah Umar bin Khaththab. Nanti Khalifah akan membacanya, lalu mengirim surat balasan untuk Saad yang berisi perintah berikutnya.\n\nBegitulah rutinitas Saad selama perjalanan: surat menyurat dengan Khalifah. Saad mengirim surat yang berisi kondisi pasukan, logistik, medan, dll, lalu Khalifah mengirim surat balasan yang isinya instruksi selanjutnya.\n\nMengapa aku menyebutnya kebiasaan unik? Ada dua alasan untuk itu.\n\nYang pertama, ini bukti bahwa Saad menghormati posisi Umar bin Khaththab sebagai Khalifah. Meskipun sedang ditampuk sebagai panglima pasukan, Saad tidak besar kepala dan bertindak berdasarkan keputusan pribadinya. Dia tetap membutuhkan tuntunan dari Khalifah.\n\nYang kedua –ini dia yang menarik– adalah metode surat-menyuratnya.\n\nKamu tahu sendiri, sekarang sudah ada faximile, email, dan bahkan WhatsApp. Dengan fasilitas tersebut, sebuah pesan bisa terkirim nyaris seketika pada si penerima meskipun yang satu ada di kutub utara dan yang lainnya ada di kutub selatan.\n\nNamun dulu, media terbaik untuk mengirim pesan adalah melalui kurir yang naik unta atau kuda.\n\nNah, sekarang bayangkan kamu adalah Saad. Dan sekarang, kamu sudah sampai di Hail, yang jaraknya 94-jam-dengan-berjalan-kaki dari Madinah. Maka kamu memutuskan untuk mengirim surat pada Khalifah dan berharap mendapat balasan yang isinya instruksi selanjutnya. Apakah kamu bakal dapat balasannya dalam hitungan detik, menit, jam, atau setidaknya hari?\n\nCk, naif sekali. Hitungan minggu lebih masuk akal. Ya, Saad bisa menunggu lebih dari satu minggu hanya untuk menunggu sebuah instruksi dari Khalifah. Itu cukup gila. Butuh kepercayaan dan kesabaran setinggi apa untuk menunggu selama itu?\n\nDuh, kasihan banget ya orang-orang zaman dulu. Mereka harus nunggu seminggu hanya untuk menerima sebuah informasi!\n\nNamun tunggu dulu. Justru karena lamanya waktu yang dibutuhkan untuk menerima sebuah informasi, mereka jadi SANGAT menghargai informasi tersebut.\n\nSebuah surat dari Khalifah yang diterima Saad akan dibaca dengan sangat hati-hati, direnungkan, lalu ditindaklanjuti dengan sebijaksana dan se-kepala-dingin mungkin. Soalnya, surat yang diterima Saad ini barang yang super-duper-ultra mewah. Surat selanjutnya mungkin baru akan didapat beberapa minggu lagi. Ini sama sekali bukan hiperbola.\n\nSekarang bandingkan dengan zaman sekarang, di mana informasi bisa didapat dengan seketika. Namun yang terjadi adalah orang-orang mudah galau dan marah hanya karena pesannya cuma di-read, mereka baca komentar di sosmed yang bertentangan dengan pendapatnya, atau mereka baca berita di surat kabar online.\n\nProses perenungan ala Saad bin Abi Waqqash sudah nyaris hilang. Orang-orang jadi terlalu reaktif. Informasi tidak lagi dihargai dengan semestinya. Ini tragedi.\n\nMenurutku, inilah alasan paling logis kenapa era sekarang disebut era fitnah.
