All the animals were showing signs of starvation, except the tortoise. Somehow, when everybody else was growing thinner, the tortoise was increasing in size. All the animals would come to meet him, asking for help and begging for food but he always turned them away. You see, what they didn't know was that the tortoise had deviced a devious method of acquiring food. He would travel to the other animal kingdoms and then, with his magic, he would summon a giant, hollowed out, walking palm tree and dance into the market square and after people had run away in a panic, he would come out and steal food from the market. That was why he was looking far better than the other animals. \n\nThe tortoise kept it up for months but what he didn't know was that his day of reckoning was around the corner. News had spread from the kingdoms he had robbed to other kingdoms. There was one particular kingdom which had a hunter that was determined to know the cause of the phenomenon. He was convinced that there was an explanation behind the dancing palm tree. He didn't have to wait long before the tortoise decided to rob his kingdom. \n\nThe tortoise summoned the palm tree and danced into their market square. People ran away but the hunter hid in a small alcove waiting to see what would happen. Once the tortoise thought everybody had run away, he came out of the palm tree and started stealing food. Once the hunter saw the tortoise, he realized at once what had been going on. He jumped out of his hiding place and grabbed hold of the tortoise. The resulting scuffle and noise from the tortoise trying to escape drew the attention of people to the market. They quickly restrained the tortoise and the hunter explained what had happened. The villagers dragged the tortoise to the king and the tortoise was given a yrial and sentenced to prison. \n\nMeanwhile, back in the northern animal kingdom, the animals were slowly recovering from the famine. They worked hard, farmed, stored their produce and even rationed food until they eventually recovered. We should endeavor to ask for the reason behind an action before just assuming. \n\nMany years ago, in a Nigerian village, there lived a very rich town elder called Omonigho. She had everything she could possibly want, a mansion, a lot of money, farm animals and even a lot of servants. There was just one problem, Omonigho was a very lonely woman. Her husband, who was the love of her life, had died in a hunting accident a few years previous and they had no child. She had been alone fo many years but she was tired of it and resorted to desperate measures. This is where our tale starts. \n\nThere was a legend in their village of the gods of the village granting a person a boon if they adhered strictly to the conditions given. Omonigho consulted the village medicine man and he told her that in the night, right before her bedtime, she should leave an earthen pot filled with palm oil outside her room door, pray and ask her request from the gods and then go to sleep. She was very grateful and was in a haste to leave when the medicine man called her back and gave her a warning. He told her that indeed she would get a child but she should make sure that the child never goes out in sunlight, goes near a fire and is always keep very cool. Omonigho assured him that she would do so. \n\nThat night, Omonigho did as the medicine man instructed and went to bed with high hopes. The next morning, she found a sleeping girl outside her door. She was overjoyed and named her new daughter Itohan. She didn't allow her to go out, cook or do any strenuous activities and she made sure that at least 5 servants followed her around, taking turns to fan her. Things were good for months but there was trouble brewing. \n\nThe servants in the house were annoyed that they had to cater to Itohan all the time. They were plotting amongst themselves about how they would force her to do some of the work when Omonigho was not around. They were being paid but they were indignant and jealous about how Itohan was being pampered. They weren't aware of the reasons why Omonigho made all those concessions for her new daughter. They just thought she was being spoilt because her mother was rich and decided to teach her a lesson. \n\nOne day, Omonigho left the house to go visit her friend's house. She left the usual instructions about Itohan's care. The servants, once they were sure that Omonigho had truly gone, seized Itohan and made her do some of their chores. They then decided to drag her to the kitchen that her mother had forbidden her from and make her cook. Itohan was struggling and pleading but they just sneered at her and threw her into the kitchen. They made her light a fire on the adogan(cooking tripod stand) and asked her to fan the flames and then they locked her in the kitchen. At first, they were making fun of her while she was sobbing but eventually they noticed she was quiet. They quickly opened the door but it was too late, she had already melted. They panicked and ran away.\n\nOmonigho came back to the house in the evening. As she got into the house, she called for Itohan buy she received no answer. She grew panicked and started frantically checking the house for Itohan or at least, any of the servants. When she got to the kitchen and saw the oil puddle in front of the lit adogan, she realized what had happened. She packed the oil off the floor and put it into the PPT again and after praying to the gods, she went back to her room but she couldn't sleep. She went out the next morning hopefully but there was nothing there. She rushed to the medicine man's hut but he gave her bad news. He told her that she had lost her chance. That it was a test from the gods and she had failed it. She wouldn't get another chance, even wit had not been her fault. She returned home sad and grieving and eventually she died ofa broken heart because she couldn't get over the loss of the child she lost. \n\nPerhaps the servants would have understood and been nicer if they known the reasons for her actions but we shall never know.",

He is usually depicted as smart, wise and very cunning. There is almost no story in Nigeria about animals that doesn't involve the tortoise in some way. He is either a good or bad character, but what people agree on is that the tortoise always has something up his sleeves. \n\nNow, the tortoise in today's story is known as Ijapa. Ijapa had two close friends, Adiye and Ewure. Ijapa and his friends liked to party but the funny thing was, they weren't aware that the other was friends with Ijapa. Ijapa liked being the center of attention and didn't want his friends to focus on anyone but him. This eventually led to a problem. You see, on that fateful morning, both Adiye and Ewure had come to visit Ijapa at his house but they came at different times. They had both come to invite Ijapa to their house for a party. This normally will have been a good thing for Ijapa but there was a problem. Their party was occurring on the same day at the same time and they had both invited Ijapa to be their guest of honor. \n\nSo, Ijapa devised a plan. He would start the day at Adiye's party venue which was closer to his house. He would stay there for a bit and then head to Ewure's party. He planned it this way, so that by the time he gets to Ewure's house, they would have finished cooking and he would eat and then he would go back to Adiye's party, where he would also eat. In this way, he reasoned that he would enjoy the delicacies of both parties. \n\nOn the day of the party, he set off for Adiye's house but when he got there, they had not started the preparations at all. He tried to hurry up everything but it was taking too long. He had to excuse himself to make off for Ewure's house. He said his goodbyes and informed them that he would be back very soon. Ijapa made for Ewure's house and eventually got there. But the preparations in Ewure's house were not done too and so he tried to hurry up the preparations there too. He spent a long time there and left there quite late because they still weren't done. \n\nHe got back to Adiye's house to find that they were cleaning up. The party was already done and everybody had gone home. When he inquired about his food, he was told that they had shared all the food for the party guests. Now very hungry, he started off again for Ewure's house. Unfortunately, when he got there, he found a similar scenario. At least they were, until–\n\n**\"AAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH\"**\n\nThe doors of houses burst open and people rushed towards the house of the Tarez clan. They opened the front door(because people left their doors open in Miaran village because crimes were nonexistent there), and hurried up the stairs, where the bedrooms in all houses were located. When they got there, they found Dira and Molu Tarez,the head and matriarch of the Tarez clan trying to console their youngest out of four children, Kiwa. He was shaking and looking around the room with fright and his parents couldn't provide him any comfort because they certainly didn't look any better. \n\nThe villagers were all trying to talk over each other and inquire what was matter was, but nobody could provide answers, since everybody was talking at one. \"Everybody keep quiet, so they can finally answer our questions \", a commanding voice suddenly said. The whole room became quiet immediately, because that voice belonged to the High Chief of Miaran, whom was called Wanek. Wanek came to the front of the crowd and directly addressed the distressed family. \n\n\"Dira, what exactly is the problem?, that scream was heard all over the village\" asked Wanek. \n\nKiwa just kept muttering to himself and shaking on the bed. \n\n\"Speak up boy, we can't hear you\" commanded Wanek. \n\n\"M-M-M-M-Monster! There was a monster here in my room. He was trying to eat me. \n\nThe villagers became angry, thinking they had been woken up and had rushed out of their houses because of the imagination of a child but his parents supported him. \n\n\"It's true, we saw the monster too with our eyes\", they declared. \n\nThe villagers were still angry and disbelieving. They didn't believe them and thought they were just asking for attention. That is, until the village medicine man, Xar, started questioning the family. \n\n\"Describe the monster you saw to me\", he asked the family. \n\n\"It had tentacles extending from its back,it had a long snout and very long fangs. It had demonic looking yellow eyes and malformed hands and legs with claws.\"\n\n\"It is as l feared then, Raozarkin, the beast from the depths has awoken\", sighed Xar. \n\n\"You know this beast?\", questioned Wanek. \n\n\"I know of it but not personally. It is a secret that is passed down in my clan, passed down to each successor of the previous medicine man. It is a beast that lives in the depths of our sea, Tarumir. It awakens every 1000 years and attacks the village looking for food to eat until it is satisfied or it is driven back to the depths.\"\n\n\"Why have you never told me, the village chief about this\", demanded Wanek. \n\n\"It is a secret that was entrusted to my clan,the Marez, by the other 8 clans, including yours, the Karez. The purpose of keeping it secret is to prevent panic amongst the villagers. \n\nAt this point, true to his words, the villagers had already begun to panic after hearing the monster was real and not just created from the overactive imagination of a child or the attention seeking of the Tarez clan. \n\n\"We must leave-, We are going to die\". Everybody was clamoring and panicking and discussing escape from the village. \n\n\"Everyone, calm down. Let me ask the medicine man a few questions before we begin to consider an evacuation of the village\", Wanek implored them. \n\nTurning to face Xar, he questioned him. \n\n\"You say this has happened before. We are all alive today though and this means even though it has come before, it has been defeated successfully previously \", stated Wanek. \n\n\"Yes it has, but that is a topic for the morrow. Right now, we should all sleep and gather at the village square by noon tomorrow so that I can tell you all about it.
