In such conversations, economically\nadvanced countries such as Japan come in for particular criticism in\nthis regard for prosperity is judged to leave little excuse for outmoded sexist\nattitudes. Frequently, however, those criticisms are made with only superficial\nknowledge of the culture in question and without recognition of the multiple\nfacets that comprise any society. As with other stories in this collection, the\npresent tale is an account of a mountain adventure. This is simply a story, recounting one brief personal experience\non the slopes of the mountain known as Hotaka-dake in the scenic Japan Alps.\nOf course, like any other visitor to Japan I had witnessed the bent old ladies\nshuffling home through the narrow city streets while loaded down with groceries.\nI had met the wives of acquaintances who seemed fearful of voicing opinions and\nintent only on serving every need of the husband and his guests. Of course, I had\nheard the indignant stories of western visitors who had been fondled on crowded\nsubway trains. Probably, the only contact beyond the superficial\nhad been with Sachie Kamijo, the wife of my good friend Kenjiro Kamijo. Sachie\nspoke excellent English and had spent a year in California when Kenjiro visited\nCaltech. She seemed fully in control of her life and surroundings, an equal\npartner with Kenjiro in all that they did together and as liberated as any American\nwoman. Moreover, I had met dominant Japanese women who clearly ruled\nthe home and, on the trains and in the cities, I had seen numerous groups of\nindependent women enjoying the company of their own sex and embarking on\noutings and adventures far from their husbands and fathers. In contrast, in\na hut high on the slopes of Fuji-san I had spent an evening transported back\ninto some distant time of myth and make-believe when an old woman read the\nextended story of my life from the wrinkles in my palm (see “Fuji”). Perhaps this is so because in such a densely populated yet mountainous\ncountry where the flatland had all been developed for agriculture, the only\nwilderness left in which to seek privacy for meditation and prayer was in the\nmountains. Moreover, it was evident that the mountains brought the rain that\nwas so important to the crops, particularly the rice. And so even in the ancient\nshamanistic belief system known as Shinto the mountains were believed to be\nthe home of the spirits and the place where dead souls went to rest.\nThen, in the sixth century came a major influx of Chinese religions and\ntraditions, both Taoist and Buddhist. Shinto beliefs became inculcated with\nthese more sophisticated philosophies and the ancient sacred mountains evolved\ninto refuges for Buddhist monks and hermits. With the growing reputation and\ninfluence of these men, their mountain refuges and temples naturally became\npilgrimage destinations and venues for annual religious retreats. Sects evolved\nthat combined the ancient traditions with Buddhist beliefs, most notably the\n![image.png](https://res.cloudinary.com/hpiynhbhq/image/upload/v1520660149/oypgcfs9q1xsmbedcmab.png)\n![image.png](https://res.cloudinary.com/hpiynhbhq/image/upload/v1520660166/ivwpqdywhg1fidqrfi0a.png)\nreligious power (gen). Shugendo traces its origin to a legendary ascetic called En\nNo Gyoja who lived near Kyoto during the Nara Period in the late 7th century.\nIt teaches ascetic practices that are to be conducted upon certain mountains\nand lead to magic religious powers including spirit possession, exorcism and\nfaith-healing. Its leaders are regarded as living “kami” or Buddhas and its\nfollowers are known as “yamabushi” (wandering mountain ascetics). To this\nday, yamabushi, dressed in flowing pantaloons and checkered smocks, make\nannual pilgrimages on many sacred mountains, visiting the shrines at each of\nthe ten stations (reflecting the ten precepts of Buddhism) on the way up the\nmountain and practicing a wide array of purification formulas and traditions.\nWhen they descend from the mountain they visit their friends to administer\nblessings from the mountain or perform special services of healing or exorcism.\nThe religious goals are as diverse as their organization and amount to the\napplication of religious magic to almost any human need. Because of its simple\nshamanistic roots, its loose organization and lack of specific textual doctrine,\nShugendo had a strong appeal for the ordinary folk and became very popular\nthroughout Japan from the 12th century onward. Especially in the north, almost\nall village shrines came to be served by Shugendo priests.\nOne of the great attractions of these oriental religions is that they are largely\ninclusive. This stands in marked contrast to the exclusivity of many western\nreligious sects. The inclusivity means that the shrines at regular intervals on the\ntrails up the sacred mountains (and by extension the less sacred ones) welcome\nall comers and a tradition has developed of trying to accommodate any and all\ntravelers who come that way. Thus today, the shrines or stations on the popular\nmountain trails largely serve the secular purpose of providing an overnight rest\nstop for multitudes of hikers with little or no religious purpose. For a western\nexplorer they provide a fascinating insight into Japanese culture, society and\ntraditions.\n![image.png](https://res.cloudinary.com/hpiynhbhq/image/upload/v1520660227/virdfg1ki3er6pxuh65p.png)\n\nSome of the great volcanoes have an association with one particular segment\nof Japanese society and such is the case with Mount Chokai, the bird (cho) sea\n(kai) mountain. A great stratovolcano that has erupted 30 times since 573 A.D.\n(most recently in 1974 when the eruption lasted 2 months)\n![image.png](https://res.cloudinary.com/hpiynhbhq/image/upload/v1520660209/nn1bw6uevzpty8lvddmx.png)\nChokai-san lies close to the Japan Sea in a region of northern Honshu known as Tohoku. The\nshadow that it casts on the Japan Sea is a famous sight known as Kage Chokai.\nBecause of this proximity to the sea, Chokai is the abode of deities who control\nnavigation and the safety of seafarers.\nChokai-san lies on the border between Akita prefecture to the north and\nYamagata to the south. In 1704, the peak was the stage for a local dispute\nbetween the Yashima clan from Akita and the Shonai clan from Sakata in Yamagata\nprefecture. The Yashima claimed the Shonai were infringing on their\nrights. But the Edo government, no doubt influenced by the fact that the Shonai\nwere ten times larger in terms of rice production, ignored the Yashima suit. The\ntemple at the top is said to have been originally dedicated by En No Gyoja to\n“Chokai Daigongen”, an avatar. The present O-monoimi jinja or shrine at the\ntop was originally located at the seventh stage of the mountain, Nabemori. Up\nuntil the Meiji restoration, temple construction was undertaken by both sets of\nbelievers. The Kodama or limited\nexpress (for Japanese trains of various degrees of expressness are given useful\nidentifiers) arrived exactly on time at 10.52am at Shin-Fuji station. There I was\nmet by my friend Yoshi Tsujimoto and one of his students, Masayuki Tanada,\nwho had promised to carry both of us oldies to the summit of Fuji. Or so we\nteased him; in reality he was the very essence of quiet civility.\nTrailhead\n![image.png](https://res.cloudinary.com/hpiynhbhq/image/upload/v1520659092/v7xhksdhil39dvjxvzug.png)\nsacred mountain topped by a shrine. Pilgrims who begin at the base of the\nmountain are aided by ten stations roughly equidistant along the climb to the\ntop. There are several routes up the mountain each with its own chain of ten\nstations. However, these days most hikers with a less devotional objective, drive\nas far as they can up the mountain. Roads on the north side and on the south\nside climb to just over 7500ft where the fifth station, Go-gome, is located. The\nmost popular route is up the Kawaguchi-ko trail from the Go-gome trailhead\n(7592ft) on the north side of the mountain. We followed the Fujinomiya trail\nthat begins at Shin-go-gome (7874ft), the new fifth station, on the south side.\nHike\nIt was mid-afternoon before we reached the large parking area at Shin-go-gome\nand managed, somewhat fortuitously, to find a parking space. The weather\nhad been very cloudy and misty as we drove up to this point and we had\nresigned ourselves to very limited visibility during the climb. But, as we readied\nour equipment in the parking lot, we began to catch glimpses of blue sky and\nsunshine above us. Buoyed in spirit we began our climb upwards from the\ncrowded fifth station at about 2.00pm. It is only a short way to the sixth station,\nRoku-gome, the intervals between stations being quite irregular in places. The\nsixth station also coincides with the tree line so that the terrain from here on\nwas everywhere volcanic rock strewn with ash and geologically recent ejecta.\nWe made steady progress up the rough and worn trail. Soon we were in bright\nsunshine with an uninterrupted carpet of clouds below us. The famously regular\nshape of Fuji was evident as the sun cast its shadow on the parchment of the\nFrom Shin-Fuji station it is an increasingly tortuous drive of some two hours\nthrough the town of Fujinomiya and up the lower slopes of Mount Fuji. You\nstart in the typically dense built-up area around Fuji City and Fujinomiya and\nrise gently through crowded, rolling farmland. Soon, however, this gives way\nto dense semi-tropical Japanese forest of low trees and a thick ground-covering\nof bamboo. Higher up this forest begins to change with increasing numbers\nof larger pine trees and a thinning of the bamboo. Eventually the bamboo\ndisappears completely to leave an attractive highland forest of firs.\nOur goal was the highest point reachable by road on the south side of Fuji,\nnamely the mountain station of Shin-go-gome (“new fifth station”), high on the\n![image.png](https://res.cloudinary.com/hpiynhbhq/image/upload/v1520659134/o7skhegtvzlhetqpgdek.png)\n\n![image.png](https://res.cloudinary.com/hpiynhbhq/image/upload/v1520659142/e1dgspjau9dzoxgg7rp2.png)\ntop of the clouds. But the bright sun also meant that we were soon sweltering\nin the heat. We could see Shichi-gome, the seventh station, above us and it\nseemed deceptively close. But it took a depressingly long time to get there and\nwe were struggling when we arrived at 10,000ft and Shichi-gome about 4.00pm.\nOur plan was to climb some distance during the daylight hours and then to\nfind a place to stay the night so that we could climb the last part before dawn\nthe next day. In doing so we would be following the traditional timetable for\nclimbing Mount Fuji. The idea is to reach the summit in time to enjoy what\nthe Japanese call “goraiko”, the semi-mystical experience of viewing the sunrise\nfrom the summit.\nIn theory it is possible to stay overnight in one of the many lodges on the\nmountain; almost all the stations have such a lodge. They consist of three or\neven four levels of shelves installed in a moderate, single storey hut. Hundreds\nof hikers are packed in like sardines on these shelves equipped with heavy coverblankets.\nAs we were climbing toward Shichi-gome, we heard word that many of\nthe lodges were closing or had already closed for the winter. Shichi-gome lodge\nstill seemed open for business. But it was very small, already crowded and a\nvery long way from the summit for a pre-dawn hike. We decided to risk our\nchances further up the mountain since we still had a couple of hours of daylight.\nAnd so we pressed on. It was harder going now, both rougher and steeper.\nWe had to pause quite often to get our breath in the rarefied air and so, though\nthe large eighth station did not seem very high above us, it took a long time to\nreach it. At one rest stop, we had confirmation of the rumors we had heard further\ndown the mountain. The lodge at the eighth station, Hachi-gome, was full;\nthe proprietor could not pack another single soul into his establishment. This\nwas depressing since we also had confirmation that all the higher lodges (mainly\nthose on the summit) were closed for the season. But almost immediately, we\nhad some more encouraging news. Apparently, there was another Hachi-gome\nlodge just a short distance around the mountain.
