Working for a small PR firm in the city at the time, I remember people talking of the credit crunch in 2007 and the potential ramifications it could have. No-one could have predicted the chain of events that would unfold, and although the aftershocks are still being felt economically and politically, there is better understanding today of what happened and how the financial sector and governments can move on. \n\nOne nascent area that is gaining increasing traction and interest from mainstream parties these days is distributed ledger technology. Having spent just under a decade advising banks, private equity firms, pension funds, and clearing houses, I was struck by the potential for blockchain technology to radically improve the current systems and financial infrastructure that had been built up over decades. Although interest was primarily focused on Bitcoin and the vast increases in digital wealth that had been amassed by a small group of people, the potential application of the blockchain underpinning this digital token to a wide range of industries was what really interested me. \n\nIn November 2015, I decided [to set up my own consultancy](http://jeaassociates.com/), focusing on how to effectively communicate the role blockchain technology could play not only in the Financial Services industry which I had consulted for almost a decade, but also in a wide range of sectors including data management, agriculture, entertainment, transaction services, investment and, in the case of [EZYcount](https://www.ezycount.ch/en), accountancy.\n\nAs a small business owner myself, I can testify to just how time consuming and complicated filing annual accounts can be, even with the assistance of a fully qualified and highly paid professional. Few entrepreneurs can truly understand the responsibilities they take on when they file with Companies House. The realities of payroll, corporation tax and dividend payments for company directors and non-execs are rarely discussed, however the legal realities cannot be avoided or ignored. \n\n[EZYcount](https://www.ezycount.ch/en) is designed for people just like me, who want to do the right thing and pay their fair share of taxes but don’t necessarily have the knowledge to do it on our own. I was particularly impressed by how the team had designed a platform that used blockchain technology (the Ardor Proof-of-Stake blockchain) with a specific purpose of reducing digital paperwork often prone to errors, such as Excel spreadsheets, by using accountancy tools built into the system. I was also drawn to working with the team in part because the product was already up and running with a strong user-base of customers in Switzerland, automatically lending it much greater credibility than so many new ICOs raising money with nothing more than a whitepaper and some goodwill. \n\nDuring this [pre-ICO](https://www.ezycount.ch/en/ico), we have had real success communicating the EZYcount story to potential investors through the media, with the application of future funds to develop AI to further enhance the platforms for users looking to file returns and pay taxes in an easy, secure and transparent way generating considerable interest, and expected to generate even more interest going forward.\n\nAs 2018 draws to a close, the team at EZYcount can take pride in what they have achieved thus far. But before that, some news:\n\n1) I'm proud to say that we are one of the 9 fintech startups selected by the accelerator Fintech Fusion in Geneva for their next program. Fusion will support us to grow faster and better and find financing.\n\n2) A new article from us was published in a renown accounting publication. The title of the article is \"Creative destruction and how blockchain ushers in the next phase of future growth\". It has been published on \"Global Accountant\" - find it [here.](https://www.ezycount.ch/en/press/)\n\n\n# ICO start\nLast week, the whole team worked very hard to be ready for the ICO start on Saturday the 15th. I was very excited to finally launch EZYcount ICO to the public!\n\nThe technical team developed [checkout pages](https://ico.ezycount.ch/) for the different payments and delivery methods. The marketing and community management team prepared the press released and posts for our target social media channels. We also prepared emails for our customers and for people who subscribed to the ICO news on the ICO page.\n\nWe saw a lot of attention and purchases from our customers and from our fiduciary partners. I'm extremely thankful for your support. I think the EZYcount TaaL, the token representing life-long software licenses for EZYcount, is a very interesting proposition but not easy to understand. I thank personally every customer and partner who already participated in the token sale. I'm also looking forward to personally contact all of our customers in the next two weeks to show them the added value of owning one or many EZYcount TaaL licenses. \n\nMoreover, we saw interest from a couple of large investors. Let's first have a look at how this would look like and then which steps need to be taken so that this is a reality.\nThis article is based on discussions I had with major audit company representative and tax authority representative in Switzerland.\n\n# Tax automation powered by blockchain\n\nIn the future, the accounting software will transcribe all transactions directly on a blockchain managed by the state, government or the tax authority. The tax authority will then have access to each company's data under specific rules (when and under which circumstances the tax authority can unlock the details of transactions of a company). The tax authority will have an algorithm taxing or checking the tax declaration automatically. Under specific rules of the algorithm, cases will then be picked up and work by the tax representatives.\n\nBy having that level of details, the cost for the tax authority and for the company will decrease. When the tax authority has a question, it can directly access the data without having to ask the company to provide it. Furthermore, this will also allow the tax authority to make a fingerprint of the company. The fingerprint is a map of all the transactions. The tax authority will then be able to compare fingerprints of companies to find similarities or discrepancies making the audit of tax much more effective and cost-efficient. \n\nFor example, if a company has proven wrongdoing by paying politicians to receive public infrastructure orders, the tax authority can check if other companies have similar fingerprints. These companies receive then a deeper audit for similar charges.\n\nBenefits of such a situation: Increase tax revenues, decrease tax costs, either more money for the government or lower tax rates for everybody.\n\nRisks of such situation: The rules under which the tax authority is allowed to assess the transactional data of each company need to be clearly defined to minimize a \"big brother\" risk.\n\n# The steps to tax automation\n\nFirst, the laws must change to allow the tax authority to ask for the digital transactional transcript of accounting. This week I describe how I make sure to keep my balance and perform best for EZYcount\n\n#### Family, Work, Friends or FWF model\n\nThe FWF model describes the balance in life as a triangle. Each corner represents an important pillar to your emotional balance. Family describes how well you are in your family life with your spouse and children. Work describes how well or stressed you feel at work. The pillar 'friends' describes how you feel about your social life.\n\nThe model goes as thus: if you feel fulfilled in the three pillars, you can be happy. If you feel fulfilled in two pillars, life is hard but it's manageable. When you are stressed by one of the corners of the triangle, the two others compensate and help you to keep balance. For example, if you are stressed at work, your family and friends help you to stay on top of it. If you have stressed in your family but your work and friends are there, you can make it work. \n\nThe issues arrive when you only feel well in one corner of the triangle. The balance is disrupted and complications will arrive sooner or later.\n\nThis week, I take a week off. I am on holiday with my family. This ensures that I will be full of energy and ready for the storm ahead. In the upcoming weeks, there will be a lot of stress and work to render the ICO successful.
