Let the earth be opened and bud forth the Savior.\n\n‘O Antiphons’\n\nFrom Dec. 17 to 23, the liturgy uses seven short prayers that have special richness and importance. Known as the “O antiphons” or the “greater antiphons,” these prayers compress and express the Old Testament Messianic hope for Christ. These antiphons are read each day at vespers and are used as the alleluia verse of the Advent Masses.\n\nEach antiphon is a mosaic of biblical references, collected and written in a style called anthological. The unknown author of these beautiful prayers lived around the sixth or seventh century. The author chose seven titles whose first letters are S-A-R-C-O-R-E. Read in reverse order, these letters form the two Latin words “ero cras,” meaning “Tomorrow I shall be.”\n\nNote: In this edition we are using a poetic translation of the “O antiphons” from the original Latin.\n\nDecember 16\n\nScripture reading: Isaiah 56:6–7\n\nConsideration\n\nAdvent prepares our minds and hearts for the coming of the Word of God. It is a gentle time, a time to watch that the word of Scripture does not fall on the rocky ground of distraction, nor by the wayside with our many cares, nor among thorns, caught up in flashy advertisements. It is to fall upon the rich soil of our minds and hearts where the Word of God can bury itself deep and bring forth fruit. The Lord is already near! Let us admit that we need his power and help. He is the king of justice and his reign is eternal.\n\nDecember 17\n\nScripture reading: Genesis 49:2, 8–10\n\nConsideration\n\nWhen we read Scripture and yearn for the coming of the divine, powerful Wisdom who will teach us how to live throughout our life, we think of Mary, the humble Mother of God who always waited upon the Lord as his handmaid.\n\nLet us pray: Father, you spoke, and your Word became man, born of the Virgin Mary. Christ humbled himself to share our human nature. Like a new Elijah, John will go before the Messiah and prepare the people for the Lord’s coming. A spirit of joy and wonderment pervades today’s prophecy, for the hand of God is active in Israel. The people wonder what it will all mean for their future. What does it mean for us today? The seventh “O antiphon” climaxes the series. The Messiah is addressed in human form.       "body": "Around the world, Christmas is known as a season filled with joy, happiness, and generosity. Everyone genuinely seems to be happier at Christmastime. Families gather for annual dinners to fellowship with one another, holiday decorations are put around and outside of the home to get into a Christmas spirit, and radio stations begin to play Christmas music to evoke a sense of holiday cheer in the hearts of their listeners. Happiness during Christmastime can be a contagious feeling for many, and there are various psychological reasons for the inevitable happiness that many experience during the holiday season.\n\nResearch has shown that thinking about Christmas or being exposed to topics centered around Christmas can positively affect brain activity. The mere thought of Christmas can cause various regions in the brain to light up, which generates an emotion commonly known as “Christmas cheer.” Experiencing “Christmas cheer” is different for everyone since everyone has their own personal ties to Christmas—whether that is upholding family traditions, hanging out with friends, going on vacation, or baking cookies for Santa. These positive ties to Christmas can instantly increase someone’s anticipation to experience the holiday joy for themselves. This anticipation can usually result in people decorating early for Christmas, listening to Christmas music, or buying presents for their loved ones as soon as they get the chance.\n\nBeing able to experience the nostalgic moments that are associated with the Christmas season can make anyone’s heart smile. The opportunity to take a pause from life’s stressors, be with loved ones, and experience the gift of gratitude can enhance one’s state of well-being. Having the time to reflect on the joys of life can help an individual to be in tune with their inner child.\n\nThe Christmas season for people who identify with the Christian faith, is a time to honor the birth of Jesus Christ, Savior of the world, and to remember the importance of this monumental event in human history. The essence of Christmas is rooted in goodness, joy, and charity. This can be a huge indicator as to why people are more likely to give to others who are in need during the holiday season. Christmas is a time where people take joy in making others happy and want to continue the cycle of happiness for as long as possible.\n\nAlthough the Christmas season may seem to be a joyful time for most, it can be dreadful for some who have never had positive experiences to associate with the holiday. If an individual has dealt with broken relationships and trauma during the holidays or has never celebrated Christmas with their family, then they will have an adverse mental response to Christmas. For individuals with negative associations to Christmas, a shift in mental perspective or creating positive experiences for themselves and others could help with boosting morale during the holiday season.                   \n\nIn conclusion, christmastime gives us all an opportunity to happily reflect on the past, be joyful in the present and be hopeful for the future.
