      "body": "LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Charles Manson, the hippie cult leader who became the hypnotic-eyed face of evil across America after masterminding the gruesome murders of pregnant actress Sharon Tate and six others in Los Angeles during the summer of 1969, died Sunday night after nearly a half-century in prison. He was 83.\n\nManson died of natural causes at a California hospital while serving a life sentence, his name synonymous to this day with unspeakable violence and depravity.\n\nMichele Hanisee, president of the Association of Deputy District Attorneys for Los Angeles County, reacted to the death by quoting the late Vincent Bugliosi, the prosecutor who put Manson behind bars. You taught them; I didn't teach them. It was also unclear if Manson requested funeral services of any sort.\n\nPrison officials previously said Manson had no known next of kin, and state law says that if no relative or legal representative surfaces within 10 days, then it's up to the department to determine whether the body is cremated or buried.\n\nThe Manson Family, as his followers were called, slaughtered five of its victims on Aug. 9, 1969, at Tate's home: the actress, who was 8½ months pregnant, coffee heiress Abigail Folger, celebrity hairdresser Jay Sebring, Polish movie director Voityck Frykowski and Steven Parent, a friend of the estate's caretaker. Tate's husband, \"Rosemary's Baby\" director Roman Polanski, was out of the country at the time.\n\nThe next night, a wealthy grocer and his wife, Leno and Rosemary LaBianca, were stabbed to death in their home across town.\n\nThe killers scrawled such phrases as \"Pigs\" and a misspelled \"Healter Skelter\" in blood at the crime scenes.\n\nManson was arrested three months later. In the annals of American crime, he became the personification of evil, a short, shaggy-haired, bearded figure with a demonic stare and an \"X'' — later turned into a swastika — carved into his forehead.\n\n\"Many people I know in Los Angeles believe that the Sixties ended abruptly on August 9, 1969,\" author Joan Didion wrote in her 1979 book \"The White Album.\"\n\nAfter a trial that lasted nearly a year, Manson and three followers — Susan Atkins, Patricia Krenwinkel and Leslie Van Houten — were found guilty of murder and sentenced to death. Another defendant, Charles \"Tex\" Watson, was convicted later. All were spared execution and given life sentences after the California Supreme Court struck down the death penalty in 1972.\n\nAtkins died behind bars in 2009. Krenwinkel, Van Houten and Watson remain in prison.\n\nAnother Manson devotee, Lynette \"Squeaky\" Fromme, tried to assassinate President Gerald Ford in 1975, but her gun jammed. She served 34 years in prison.\n\nManson was born in Cincinnati on Nov. 12, 1934, to a teenager, possibly a prostitute, and was in reform school by the time he was 8. After serving a 10-year sentence for check forgery in the 1960s, Manson was said to have pleaded with authorities not to release him because he considered prison home.\n\n\"My father is the jailhouse. My father is your system,\" he would later say in a monologue on the witness stand. \"I am only what you made me. I am only a reflection of you.\"\n\nHe was set free in San Francisco during the heyday of the hippie movement in the city's Haight-Ashbury section, and though he was in his mid-30s by then, he began collecting followers — mostly women — who likened him to Jesus Christ. Most were teenagers; many came from good homes but were at odds with their parents.\n\nThe \"family\" eventually established a commune-like base at the Spahn Ranch, a ramshackle former movie location outside Los Angeles, where Manson manipulated his followers with drugs, oversaw orgies and subjected them to bizarre lectures.\n\nHe had musical ambitions and befriended rock stars, including Beach Boy Dennis Wilson. He also met Terry Melcher, a music producer who had lived in the same house that Polanski and Tate later rented.\n\nBy the summer of 1969, Manson had failed to sell his songs, and the rejection was later seen as a trigger for the violence. He complained that Wilson took a Manson song called \"Cease to Exist,\" revised it into \"Never Learn Not to Love\" and recorded it with the Beach Boys without giving Manson credit.\n\nManson was obsessed with Beatles music, particularly \"Piggies\" and \"Helter Skelter,\" a hard-rocking song that he interpreted as forecasting the end of the world. He told his followers that \"Helter Skelter is coming down\" and predicted a race war would destroy the planet.\n\n\"Everybody attached themselves to us, whether it was our fault or not,\" the Beatles' George Harrison, who wrote \"Piggies,\" later said of the murders. \"It was upsetting to be associated with something so sleazy as Charles Manson.\"\n\nAccording to testimony, Manson sent his devotees out on the night of Tate's murder with instructions to \"do something witchy.\" The state's star witness, Linda Kasabian, who was granted immunity, testified that Manson tied up the LaBiancas, then ordered his followers to kill. But Manson insisted: \"I have killed no one, and I have ordered no one to be killed.\"\n\nHis trial was nearly scuttled when President Richard Nixon said Manson was \"guilty, directly or indirectly.\" Manson grabbed a newspaper and held up the front-page headline for jurors to read: \"Manson Guilty, Nixon Declares.\" Attorneys demanded a mistrial but were turned down.\n\nFrom then on, jurors, sequestered at a hotel for 10 months, traveled to and from the courtroom in buses with blacked-out windows so they could not read the headlines on newsstands.\n\nManson was also later convicted of the slayings of a musician and a stuntman.\n\nOver the decades, Manson and his followers appeared sporadically at parole hearings, where their bids for freedom were repeatedly rejected. The women suggested they had been rehabilitated, but Manson himself stopped attending, saying prison had become his home.\n\nThe killings inspired movies and TV shows, and Bugliosi, the prosecutor, wrote a best-selling book about the murders, \"Helter Skelter.\" The macabre rock star Marilyn Manson borrowed part of his stage name from the killer.\n\n\"The Manson case, to this day, remains one of the most chilling in crime history,\" veteran crime reporter Theo Wilson wrote in her 1998 memoir, \"Headline Justice: Inside the Courtroom — The Country's Most Controversial Trials.\" ''Even people who were not yet born when the murders took place know the name Charles Manson, and shudder.\"",

Well, not really. Your thongs-of-old are still fine to wear if that’s your thing, says gynecologist Fahimeh Sasan, MD, an assistant professor of obstetrics, gynecology and reproductive science at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai.\n\nWhat is the healthiest type of panties from a health perspective? (Yes, it does exist.) “The only underwear recommendation that is medically-substantiated is that cotton underwear is more breathable, and therefore has less risk of yeast infection and irritation compared to synthetic fabrics,” Sasan tells Yahoo Health.\n\nRelated: 5 Underwear Questions You’re Too Embarrassed to Ask \n\nSince synthetic fabrics can cause more sweating “down there,” and can subsequently cause irritation and odor, you should probably keep at least a few pairs of cotton briefs in your undie arsenal. “With that said, occasionally wearing underwear made of synthetic fabric is totally okay,” says Sasan.\n\nAs long as you let things breathe from time to time, your lady parts should be plenty healthy. According to Consumer Reports, women own around 21 pairs of underwear on average — so you probably have plenty of options based on your needs of the day, and enough to fabrics and styles to rotate between cotton and synthetic.\n\n“The bottom line is the most ideal type and style of underwear, if you choose to wear it, is completely a personal choice,”says Sasan. But since 30 percent of women complain about poor fit and 27 percent of women say ugly underwear impacts their mood, do choose wisely.\n\nAnd just remember: These days, “ugly”is a relative term. At The Den in Los Angeles, which just opened its doors this January, classes include a prenatal/fertility option for those trying to conceive or who are already pregnant, 30-minute lunchtime detoxes, candlelight evening sessions and sound baths, which incorporate sound waves produced by creating vibrations on gemstone bowls. At LA’s Unplug, there are also family classes plus those just for kids/teens to help them learn effective coping skills.\n\nMeditation for the Busy Person Who Needs It Most\nA more accessible way to meditate makes total sense since the evidence proving meditation’s ability to foster happiness, improve relationships, slow aging, lower blood pressure, and improve immunity continues to pile up. Throw in the fact that many of us are working longer hours than at any time since labor statistics have been kept, and that we actually check our phones twice as often as we think we do — and yeah, figuring out a way to chill sounds like a good idea.  \n\n“We’re burning out from technology overload and constant digital contact,” says Jesse Israel, 30, founder MediClub, a New York-based monthly meditation group and The Big Quiet, a roving mass meditation meet-up that has happened in locations including an urban farm lot in Brooklyn, and a boat that held 700 guests. “As a result, we’re finding ourselves with less time to just be, so we’re craving quiet and introspection,” he tells Yahoo Health.\nThe meditation studio at The Den in LA has a warm, cozy ambiance. (Photo courtesy of The Den)\n\nToday’s “modern meditation” movement, as Israel calls is, blends contemporary lifestyle activities with conscious living. “At our events, we pair meditation in fun, social spaces with DJs and great food to create experiences that are culturally relevant, conscious and accessible,” he explains. In other words, the focus at most of these new events and studios isn’t on meditation’s deep religious roots (at least not in the beginner classes) nor is a particular style of meditation pushed. The point is to learn how to let the mind go and get centered.\n\nBoutique Fitness Influences Meditation Studios\nWith airy, minimalist spaces that more closely resemble a hip spinning studio or a high-design coffee bar, these places aim to welcome meditators of all levels and backgrounds. “So many people want to try meditation but can’t carve out the time at home—or just don’t know how to get started,” explains Ellie Burrows, co-founder of MNDFL, a New York studio that offers 30- and 45-minute classes in various meditation techniques. Just before Christmas, Social Yoga in Vancouver, British Columbia, organized a pop-up meditation space in a funky Airstream trailer parked smack in the middle of the city’s busiest shopping district. Its founder Anita Cheung also partners with hip independent local businesses (like a minimalist Japanese rare tea bar) to hold meditation events after hours.  \n\nAnd in San Francisco, yoga and meditation expert Ritu Riyat offers a monthly Pop Up Meditation Lab at Mission District businesses to inspire people to use meditation in their daily lives—and to make it accessible to those who can’t afford to pay studio fees. “At the beginning, people often cringe at the thought of sitting still for five minutes,” Riyat tells Yahoo Health. “But they leave in awe of how quickly the times passes and impressed by their capabilities.”",
