It was named after the Lassa town in Borno State, Nigeria.\n\nThis disease is of a zootonic type (mostly spread by animals). The primary carrier of Lassa fever is the Mastomys rat.\n\nThe virus is contained in the urine and feaces of the rodents. Thus, the Lassa fever can be caught if you come in contact with any of these substances, although there is no evidence that this disease can spread in an airborne environment. Most of these epidemics occur in countries of Sub -Sahara Africa,especially countries located within a 'meningitis belt that extends from Senegal in the west to Ethiopia in the east,and includes countries such as the Gambia,Guinea,Chad and Mali,as well as Burkina Faso,Ghana,Niger,Nigeria and Cameroon,among other countries. \n The **_meningococcus_** consists of at least 12 different groups (called serogroups ) of bacteria but only six serogroups,namely A,B,C,W-135, X and Y, are known to cause epidemics\n\n**HOW IS MENINGOCOCCAL MENINGITIS TRANSMITTED?**\n\n  About 1% to 30% of children and adults normally carry meningococcus in their nostrils and upper airways called (nasopharynx )  without developing any symptom or illness.\nThe bacteria is transmitted from person to person via direct contact with respiratory droplets of infected person ( carriers ) . The child may present with restlessness,excessive crying and refusal to feed. A doctor might notice that the child's head has a bulging fontanel.\nThe symptoms of meningitis can appear rapidly or over few days. Almost all untreated patients die within 2days of onset of symptoms,while 5 to 10% of patients  die even with early treatment.\nThe disease could result in brain damage,hearing loss and learning disabilities  in about 10 to 20% of patients who survive.\n \n**HOW IS MENINGITIS DIAGNOSED?**\n\nThe diagnosis of meningitis is made by doing a test called spinal tap,this procedure will enable the doctor to take the patient's spinal fluid ( called cerebrospinal fluid or CSF ) for bacteriological tests such as for gram strain and culture. This is to help isolate the bacteria responsible for the disease.\nOther blood tests such as blood culture,Full blood count,,Kidney function tests and Liver function tests may also be done depending on patient's clinical state. \n\n ![image](https://img.esteem.ws/71ba4kvwap.jpg)\n*VIEWERS DISCRETION IS ADVICED*\n\n\n**HOW IS MENINGOCOCCAL MENINGITIS TREATED?**\n \nMeningococcal meningitis is a medical emergency. All patients suspected to have meningitis should immediately be referred to be admitted in a hospital where treatment will be given. \nSeveral types of antibiotics can be used to treat meningococcal meningitis.\nHowever, Ceftriaxone remains  the drug of choice. It is important that treatment is started as soon as possible to prevent death and complications.\n Patients with meningitis should be admitted in the hospital and be given IV Ceftriazone 2g immediately and 2g every 12 hours for 5-7 days.\nFor children IV Ceftriazone 100mg/kg Daily for 7 days.\nIf Ceftriazone is not available,we can use Crystalline penicillin 4mega units  every 4 hours .\n \n**HOW DO WE PROTECT CLOSE CONTACTS OF PATIENTS WITH MENINGITIS FROM GETTING MENINGITIS?**\nChemoprophylaxis ( use of antibiotics to prevent meningitis) may be useful to protect close contacts of patients with meningococcal meningitis. However, to be effective in preventing secondary cases,chemoprophylaxis must be initiated as soon as possible (i•e  not later than 48 after diagnosis of the case ) \nIn view of the limitations associated with Chemoprophylaxis,it is only recommended in special situations with the guidance of a medical practitioner. Mass chemoprophylaxis to prevent/control epidemics is not recommended.\nDepending\nOn the patient and other factors,the doctor may consider a number of antibiotics for chemoprophylaxis including Rifampicin,Ciprofloxacin, and Ceftriaxone,among others.\nHousehold contact of every patient that has got meningitis should be prevented from getting meningitis. These contact include:\n        1. Close household contacts.\n        2. Playmates of children who developed meningitis.\n        3. People participated actively in     the management of the patient. \n                                                        \nThese contacts should be given one of the following drugs: \n         1.Ciprofloxacin tablets 50o0mg stat.\n        2. Rifampicin tablets 600mg 12hourly for 2 days.\n        3. IM Ceftriaxone 250mg stat.\n        4. Azithromycin tablet 500mg stat.\n                    \nFor children,one of the following drugs can be used.\n         1. Rifampicin tablet,5mg/kg 12 hrly for 2 days.\n         2. IM Ceftriaxone 250mg stat.\n         3. Azithromycin syrup or tablet 10mg/kg stat.        \n             \n**HOW CAN MENINGOCOCCAL MENINGITIS BE PREVENTED?**\n\nPrevention of meningitis is key as the disease can kill within few hours.
