| title | RETIREMENT – THIS ONE TIP COULD EARN YOU 100K+ |
| body | *There’s always a way to turn a negative into a positive* # YOUR RELATIONSHIPS COULD IMPACT YOUR RETIREMENT According to the [American Psychological Association](http://www.apa.org/topics/divorce/) divorce rates in the US could be as high as 50%. But what if you could turn that negative into a positive? I stumbled across this gem on accident while researching another topic, but it might be some of the most valuable information I’ve found. I’ve already been able to help a few people boost their income with this knowledge. # THE SILVER LINING Per the [Social Security Administration](https://www.ssa.gov/planners/retire/divspouse.html): If you are divorced, but your marriage lasted 10 years or longer, you can receive benefits on your ex-spouse’s record. And, that’s even if they have remarried. That means you get a portion of their Social Security earnings without impacting them one bit! And don’t be concerned; the ex-spouse isn’t notified, nor do they, or their current spouse, earn any less of their Social Security money in their lifetime. # WHAT’S THE CATCH? There isn’t one. Your ex-spouse doesn’t need to apply, or collect, SSA in order for you to receive this benefit. As long as you have been divorced for two years, and are of [retirement age](https://www.ssa.gov/planners/retire/retirechart.html), currently 62, then you can receive your portion of the benefits. Waiting until [full retirement age](https://www.ssa.gov/planners/retire/retirechart.html), currently 67 for those born 1960 or later, would allow you to get the maximum amount of 50% of your ex-spouses benefits. Even if you already qualify for SSA on your own, your amount may be increased if your ex-spouse’s benefits are higher. This is really worth looking into, just to be sure you aren’t leaving money on the table, if you were previously married. # REQUIREMENTS The requirements to receive your portion of your ex-spouse’s benefit per [SSA](https://www.ssa.gov/planners/retire/divspouse.html) are: - You are unmarried; - You are age 62 or older; - Your ex-spouse is entitled to Social Security retirement or disability benefits; and - The benefit you are entitled to receive based on your own work is less than the benefit you would receive based on your ex-spouse’s work. If your SSA benefits are more than your ex-spouses then this won’t benefit you. If you’re on good enough terms; you could share this info with your ex-spouse, so they can benefit though. Doesn’t cost you anything to pay it forward. At the very least, earn a few brownie points for trying. # CAN I REMARRY? Don’t let this stop you from remarrying. If you’re among the 67% that remarried, and subsequently divorced again, you can still collect benefits from your ex-spouse from your first marriage. If you are currently happily remarried, then you won’t be eligible for this specific benefit. We both know, you can’t put a price on love. # WHERE’S MY 100K? So how did I get to this being a potential 100k windfall for you? The amount one will earn from SSA varies wildly; based on factors such as when you begin collecting SSA, the earnings index during your working years, and how much you earned while employed. It isn’t super strait forward, but with a PhD in retirement engineering, you’ll see that it’s crystal clear, as… mud. You can estimate your retirement benefits [here](https://www.ssa.gov/benefits/retirement/estimator.html). Average SSA benefit in 2018 are estimated to be around $1400 a month. With life expectancy in the US, in 2018, of around 79 years on average, per the [CDC](https://www.cdc.gov/nchs/fastats/life-expectancy.htm); that would expect one to collect this increased benefit for 12 years; if waiting to collect the [maximum amount](https://www.ssa.gov/planners/retire/retirechart.html) of 50% at age 67. If you were previously ineligible to collect SSA, this could provide you with $700 a month on average; equal to $8400 a year. Not factoring for inflation increases to the benefit you’d receive; in those 12 years you’d earn $100,800! # CONCLUSION There’s always a bright side; even when you don’t think there’s one. Keep looking. Ask yourself if you’re squeezing everything you can out of your resources. Information is power people! Be sure to maximize your knowledge, so you can maximize your life. A little knowledge could be worth a lot. *If you found this valuable be sure to share with someone you think could benefit from it. | body | I think my problem with crypto is that I struggle with how to value it. Please let me know if you all have found a way; besides potential % of the money supply. There's still that thought in the back of my head wondering if the current mainstream name will just be replaced with the next big thing. I'm not one that panic sells, as I've chosen to manage my risk by position sizing. If they all go to 0, I'll be the sucker hodling till the end. But, that also unfortunately keeps me from taking on large positions. Sometimes jumping on the momentum train, and getting off during the ride, is just easier for me mentally from a risk perspective. So much easier to buy value when you know what you're buying, and you know its value to you. The real trade here is buying those strawberries from your market and selling them in NYC for 4X :) |

| title | Paying off debt - How I paid off 55k of debt in 14 months |
| body | *I’ve made the mistakes with debt and overcame them. You can too!* If you’re reading this, you might be feeling hopeless on paying off debt. Read how I got into my debt disaster and the steps I took to pay off debt at a rapid pace. # I drank the kool-aid You remember those times, back in 2007/2008 when people were spending money they didn’t have, at a rate faster than oil prices could increase? I had fallen into the trap as well. This naturally frugal fellow drank the kool-aid for a few years; accumulating credit card debt spending on food, entertainment, and home supplies. # How I got myself in this situation I had made a “smart financial decision”, and purchased an overpriced home a few years earlier at age 19. That home was of course a fixer upper for 450k, that required two years of my own blood, sweat, and tears to make it habitable. But that’s a story in itself for another time. What was the final straw, was seeing a luxury car commercial that said I could get the car I wanted for payments of only $400 a month. “Pssshhh I could totally afford $400 a month!” I promptly drove down to the dealership and drove off with 4k more in credit card debt, for the down payment, and payments of around $700 a month including insurance. They definitely saw me coming. I’m pretty sure there was an announcement before I arrived that a young 20 something, who finally thought he was beginning to make it in life, would be coming in at any minute. Be sure to take him for all he’s got! # The writing was on the wall Something weird started happening. I was working less and was draining what little savings I had each month to keep up with all my spending. Knowing nothing about finance at this time, I realized I needed to make a change; I needed to start tracking my spending. # How I paid off 55K of debt At that time I had about 22k owed for the 36 month car lease, and 33k in credit card debt. The economy was crumbling and I knew this wasn’t sustainable. I made a tough decision, swallowed my pride, and consciously made the decision I was no longer going to live this way. So what did I do? # I got into more debt! Yes you read that right. Sometimes we have to take a step back before we’re able to move forward. I wanted to get out of the car lease. I tried swap-a-lease, but it was useless; not one person called. Looking back I’m thankful I didn’t. I found out later I would still be obligated to fulfill the lease term unless I broke the lease, adding yet another fee. The risk of someone driving the car, not paying me, and damaging the car, seemed highly likely. I went back to the dealer, but they wanted to give me under 10k less then I had paid just 4 months earlier. Talk about buyer’s remorse. # I had already incurred a sunk cost, so I focused on getting out of my reoccurring obligation I didn’t give up. Knowing I needed to get out of the lease; I changed my mindset from, “I don’t want to lose money!” And approached it instead as, “How little can I lose to move forward?” I had heard that CarMax was paying fairer prices for used cars. Their price was still 5k under what I owed on it though. They fortunately gave me a week to think it over. I took that week to live like the rockstar I thought the car made me and then… # I cut the check One of my credit cards was offering promotional checks at 0% APR for a 3% fee. I wrote the check and officially began crushing my debt. Think about this for a minute. I had to cut a check for 5k and give them my car that I only had for 4 months. Those 4 months cost me 11k to drive that car. Do your problems seem a little smaller now? # I used my savings I had a few thousand in savings while having credit card debt. We’re all told to build up a nest egg for an emergency fund. I made the decision to only keep enough in the bank to make my monthly payments. That amount was replenished each month with earnings from my job. If I lost my job, I was confident I could come up with enough cash to keep me afloat. I took all my reserves and paid down the smallest credit card balance; knocking out one completely and made a beginning dent in another. I chose the second card based on when it’s promotional period for the teaser rate ended and what rate I was going to be charged. If I had similar sized balances, I made my decision to pay the higher rate card first. # Consolidate Having too many payments to keep track of was both distracting and capital intensive. I went from 6 monthly payments to two. This gave me a net lower minimum payment, and I was able to move the balances at lower rates. I used balance transfer promotions and credit card check promotions that cost me from 0-4% to make the moves. Doing the math at that time, reinforced that the savings were worth it. # I timed my purchases I was able to get one last [0% credit card](https://www.referyourchasecard.com/18/ID7M5OX2XL) before the banks tightened their lending. Remember I’m doing this during a major financial recession. I had always paid cash for most things and used credit cards for big purchases. I completely changed my mindset. What I found, was that if I timed it right, I could defer needing to make a payment for almost two months at times. I began charging everything on my new credit card. See [“Earning the float”](https://www.espressomykitchen.com/earning-the-float/) for what this strategy turned into. # Shuffle balances My new credit card would send me a statement after the first month, and it would be due in almost a month. Learning this, I was able to float the funds for almost 60 days. You may think I was just transferring debt from one credit card to another. You’re right, I was, but I was paying down a balance at 12% and moving it to a card that charged 0%. It saved me tons in interest. I continued to rotate between cards. Once one was completely paid off, I’d wait until after the billing period ended. I’d then began charging on it if I needed to get debt off one card and onto another for a promotional period ending or to get lower rate. # I sold and returned all my excess At this time I had purchased items for future projects, items to keep in stock for ease of use, and duplicates of things. I returned the extra building materials, multiple house cleaner type items, and parts for projects that were months, if not years out. This was clearly the easiest way to recoup cash. I began to think like a lean business; letting the store hold the items until the moment I needed it. I had accumulated multiple sets of tools to have on-hand for a helper, and another set to keep in separate locations. Whatever could be sold was sold. The toys went as well. It was freedom or debt. I wanted a fresh start. # I picked up extra work I’m very much in the earn money via hard labor mindset at that time. I looked to my network and ended up helping a friend manufacture items in the evenings for his business; in addition to, my current 9-5. I was welding, cutting, grinding; whatever it took to earn extra cash. I had an abundance of time, but needed money. You don’t need to be tech savvy to generate money from side gigs, but you’ll find out you should learn to be. This turned into my first exposure to drop shipping. Only I didn’t realize it was drop shipping at that time. I was at the cusp of a great idea with the wrong item to sell. I ended up doing the customer service and selling the items I manufactured with him on Ebay. He would ship to the customer, while I communicated with the customers and received the order details. This would have been great, but the sales were very sporadic and gave me a poor impression of what could be achieved online. # I became a hermit I’m just going to be real with you. I prioritized being debt free over short term entertainment. I didn’t go out. If I went out, I figured I’d spend money, so I just didn’t. Instead, I stayed home thinking of strategies to earn money and pay down debt. I became an avid reader during that time; getting a library pass, and reading all I could for free. Check out some of the free things we currently do: [25 things to do for free in NYC](https://www.espressomykitchen.com/things-to-do-free-nyc/) If I did go out, I made sure I did things for free. I did a lot of running, hiking, mountain biking in areas that were accessible from my house without needing a car. A unintended bonus from this was that I got in great shape. You’d be surprised that there are things that are fun to do for free; you may just need to change your mindset. [“The Daily Stoic“](https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0735211736/ref=as_li_qf_asin_il_tl?ie=UTF8&tag=emkjerry-20&creative=9325&linkCode=as2&creativeASIN=0735211736&linkId=b4ec8007985f5b7cf0702d58fdbcb743) is a book I highly recommend if you want to rethink how you view life. I discuss the book [here](https://www.espressomykitchen.com/intro-espresso-my-wealth/). You can read the first few chapters for free [here](https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0735211736/ref=as_li_qf_asin_il_tl?ie=UTF8&tag=emkjerry-20&creative=9325&linkCode=as2&creativeASIN=0735211736&linkId=b4ec8007985f5b7cf0702d58fdbcb743) in the preview section. # I ate incredibly cheap meals After home expenses, food is typically peoples second largest expense. I attacked that the only two ways I could think of: eat less, and find food that would fill me up for cheap. I had eating less down to a science already that originated in my post [How to save $1000 without a job](https://www.espressomykitchen.com/how-to-save-1000-without-a-job/). Come to find out, some nutritionist are claiming short term fasting has [health benefits](http://blog.warriornetwork.global/5-statistics-that-show-why-intermittent-fasting-is-powerful-for-weight-loss/). I’m not experienced in this area, but it may be an unintended added bonus. # I never said this was going to be easy I made sacrifices and trade offs in order to pay my debt down faster. The key to making it easier, was to make it a game. I would try and find what meals I could make that cost the least. I had a full rotation of meals; they weren’t the healthiest, or most nutritional, but they got me through that tough time. I’ll share those meals in future posts, so be sure to [subscribe](https://espressomykitchen.us18.list-manage.com/subscribe?u=b82754b0e974c5ffeead9c452&id=6cdd7a5dfb). # Conclusion While I did this almost 10 years ago, these ideas still apply. There are even more tools and resources to help you earn money or save money online these days to make paying off debt easier. We’ll be discussing these more in future posts. I wanted to share my story as inspiration. I did this during pretty tough times and went pretty extreme with it. You can turn your life around by getting out of debt and learn to build wealth. | body | Good point on the under shirt legnth. That is definitely a useful tip I should have included. I do agree that some of the Cole Haan styles aren't the greatest. What you don't see in the pics is how much more comfortable some of their shoes are over a traditional dress shoe. They're noticeably more comfortable. I wouldn't spend what they're asking for just regular shoes. I'm just talking about dress shoes. Worth trying on in the store just to get an idea. I get my casual sneakers from Amazon or Macy's. I tend to spend around $30-60 for Vans usually. As long as you're not in a rush you can wait for deals to come to you. |

| body | I can't stand wearing v necks not the best if your skinny and have bones sticking out hah. Regardless, Make sure they are long enough so your shirt doesn't keep untucking. Then again I can be cheap and wear khakis and polo every day as I'm in IT.. Amazon usually has good values but can take awhile to find something good but not overpriced, depending on your size shoe. Some of those "sneakers" from Cole haan etc look like super old man, retire in florida shoes. |

| title | Business casual with value – Get the most value out of your clothing |
| body | *Use these tips to get the most value out of your clothing* There are many things I wish someone had given me some pointers on sooner, specifically in the work place. Being the first one in my immediate family to graduate from a 4 year university, left me with many unanswered questions; many of which took me years to answer on my own. Clothing style, cost, and value were many of those questions. Usually it was about how little could I spend and still look, not only presentable, but good. These are some business casual clothing items I’ve personally found value in. # You're going to need to earn money If you think you’re just going to cut and save yourself to FI, you’re kidding yourself. Sure compound interest over time bleh bleh bleh. In 100 years you’ll have 1mm, great. You need to increase your income. I chose to do this by getting a career in finance. I knew it offered a high income potential, that could get me to FI sooner. Most of us aren’t FI yet, and if we are, some can’t bring themselves to let go of their work. For many our work is our identity, it shouldn’t be, but it is. I get it. So that means we’re still working. Even if you don’t work in an office, you may find this info useful for business meetings. # Dress to impress business casual This post was inspired by a younger friend at work that was asking about tips on work attire. After all, my nick name at work has been Mr. GQ at times. Growing up we initially take our parents lead on how to dress. That could be good thing or leave you representing the 80’s. I think if I found this at the beginning of my career I’d find it helpful, so here we go. # Strategically frugal If you’ve been following along so far with my previous posts, you’ll realize I may take some frugal extremes in some cases, like here –> [How to save 1k](https://www.espressomykitchen.com/how-to-save-1000-without-a-job/); yet I appear to spend recklessly in others. (I spent $500 on shoes for work…In my defense it was a moment of insanity, but I did get them for $425. And no I won’t be doing that again.) You don’t know until you try; hence why I want to share what I’ve found here. # Buy value My motto in life is that I “buy value”. That doesn’t mean I’m always going to buy the cheapest thing, or wait for a discount if I need it immediately. I try to plan ahead so that I don’t run into situations where I need to spend urgently. I find I’m able to find better deals when I’m able to wait for the deals to come to me. Now that doesn’t mean I’ll go so cheap that I risk sacrificing the quality of something I’m producing with that item. Similarly, if it’s going to take spending $300 to complete something a week sooner, I’ll likely spend the money. As I earn more, the more valuable my time becomes. Spending an hour or two to take an online surveys to earn $5 is fine when I was a broke college student, but as I progress, I put greater weight on my decisions of where to spend both my time and money. There’s a saying: You can have it fast, cheap, or accurate – pick two. I think you’ll find that holds up in most aspects of life. # Thrift stores Yes I work for a Wall st. firm, and I’ve shown up in clothes I’ve purchased from a thrift store. I’ve even received compliments on them. You’d be amazed what people give or throw away. I’d rather buy a quality blazer at a thrift store than a cheap suit from an outlet. Blazers and sport coats are the only things I’d still be willing to buy used at this point. My first suit was a buy one, get one free, from the Men’s warehouse. No one mentioned I’d have to spend $120 getting those cheap suits tailored. Even then I was swimming in them. I cringe just thinking about how I looked in those suits. I probably only wore them a handful of times, yet it took me years to realize what a waste of money they were. I never felt comfortable in either one and eventually donated them. You should feel confident in the clothes you wear. Don’t wear what society says you should; wear what you feel confident in. My mistake was letting the tailor tell me how it should fit, instead of me telling them what I wanted. # Suits My favorite suits are hands down [Bar III](https://www.macys.com/shop/product/bar-iii-mens-slim-fit-active-stretch-suit-separates-created-for-macys?ID=5022925&CategoryID=17788&swatchColor=Blue&swatchColor=Blue#fn=BRAND%3DBar%20III%26SIZE%3D%26sp%3D1%26spc%3D586%26ruleId%3D78%7CBOOST%20SAVED%20SET%26searchPass%3DmatchNone%26slotId%3D2&ranMID=3184&ranEAID=AysPbYF8vuM&ranSiteID=AysPbYF8vuM-a.v0tIhWuE7by9Hh61wAaA&LinkshareID=AysPbYF8vuM-a.v0tIhWuE7by9Hh61wAaA&PartnerID=LINKSHARE&cm_mmc=LINKSHARE-_-5-_-63-_-MP563). I can buy them right off the shelf without tailoring them and they fit me perfect. They run slimmer, and have the modern European look; meaning less extra material and shorter jackets. I buy them usually in person at Macy’s. They’re a great value. If you use a coupon and open a store credit card you can save a ton. Just be sure to pay the credit card off in full, or all those savings are lost to interest. Once you know your size, and stay with a consistent brand then you can order online. It’s still a bit dicey with suits though. # Shirts There’s so many different brands of shirts out there. While these are not the cheapest, they are definitely the best value. I want quality items, that look good, last, at a great price. [Charles Tyrwhitt](https://www.ctshirts.com/us) has deals usually a few times a year. The best deal they offer is 3 shirts for $99. Wait for it. It will come. If you buy in NYC there’s no sales tax on clothing, so it’s literally $99 out the door. I found Charles Tyrwhitt because I like wearing [French cuff shirts](https://www.ctshirts.com/us/home?utm_term=3&marketing=true&utm_campaign=Ebates.com&utm_medium=link&ranSiteID=AysPbYF8vuM-TJdMhdCyJ08Rkrpud25n8Q&siteID=AysPbYF8vuM-TJdMhdCyJ08Rkrpud25n8Q&ranMID=3307&ranEAID=23803&utm_source=linkshare&utm_content=10001617), but had a hard time finding affordable ones. They offer both French and standard cuff in case you aren’t into [cufflinks](https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07281LL53/ref=as_li_qf_asin_il_tl?ie=UTF8&tag=emkjerry-20&creative=9325&linkCode=as2&creativeASIN=B07281LL53&linkId=61f409fb7b2bb3e1dc21e055d9cd2164). The key is to get the non-iron shirts. You’ll spend a ton, and waste time on dry cleaning shirts and slacks. If you know what to buy, you can bypass the dry cleaners all together. # Under shirts If you live in a cold climate or just sweat a ton then you need undershirts. Get the [V-neck](https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00VTVBHQK/ref=as_li_qf_asin_il_tl?ie=UTF8&tag=emkjerry-20&creative=9325&linkCode=as2&creativeASIN=B00VTVBHQK&linkId=475fc8404328a257f12a5e6a7825adc2) ones so they don’t show if you have your top button undone on your dress shirt. Once the cold season is over use them as rags to clean your apartment. Get a fresh set the following year. Yes, you can afford this. # Pants Most offices have move to a more relaxed business casual dress code. I would still recommend wearing a suit on your first day. If someone tells you you’re overdressed, or you can see that your peers are dressed more casual, then I think this is one case where you’ll want to fit in. There is such thing as being overdressed. I know because I’ve been that guy… My go to, are these machine washable [slacks](https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00BEDAERG/ref=as_li_qf_asin_il_tl?ie=UTF8&tag=emkjerry-20&creative=9325&linkCode=as2&creativeASIN=B00BEDAERG&linkId=35df5d11854e63a76b90392972023a9b) that I’ve bought on Amazon. I have at least 6 pairs. You can see my review [here](https://www.amazon.com/gp/review/R2TCH6LQFXPDHN?ref=pf_ov_at_pdctrvw_srp) if you don’t believe me. These pants come in plenty of colors to keep your rotation fresh. The material is a little stretchy and light so they breath. And again, NO DRY CLEANERS! # Belts I should just say belt, because that’s all you’ll need. If you haven’t heard of Mission Belts then you obviously don’t watch Shark tank. Proud fan here! [Mission belts](https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01F4GJ4OM/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&tag=emkjerry-20&camp=1789&creative=9325&linkCode=as2&creativeASIN=B01F4GJ4OM&linkId=12bd3f6a1e49589f9841333f6f131222) has a ratcheting system that acts like a zip-tie for your belly. It’s easy to adjust, so when you sit you can let out a little slack, and tighten up when you go for a walk. I’ve gifted this product. That’s how much I love it. # Shoes I was going back and forth on this one. I don’t have the best value info here for you; partially due to the fact that I don’t buy shoes that often. I wear [running shoes](https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01KSN429I/ref=as_li_qf_asin_il_tl?ie=UTF8&tag=emkjerry-20&creative=9325&linkCode=as2&creativeASIN=B01KSN429I&linkId=42f1733c7426049be75accd463098194) as I walk to work and leave my dress shoes in the office. 1. This extends their life, and 2. I believe in using the right tool for the job. NYC just tears up shoes in general. I’ve bought the cheap Marshall’s shoes for $30. The better quality Marshall’s shoes for $60. The $90 Amazon [shoes](https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00JJIF4FU/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&tag=emkjerry-20&camp=1789&creative=9325&linkCode=as2&creativeASIN=B00JJIF4FU&linkId=b39e201baad2359f511196c564d385a7) that look good in the picture, but are still not good quality. Then I’ve gone to the extreme with my [Bruno Magli](https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01DUTWF9Q/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&tag=emkjerry-20&camp=1789&creative=9325&linkCode=as2&creativeASIN=B01DUTWF9Q&linkId=9e20f3b81758bf26836673e6b5f34373) $500 Italian imports that I purchased at Macy’s. They look beautiful, and I hope to have for 4-5 years, but they slide like a bowling shoe. I would not buy again. Look, you don’t know your limits until you push them. And you don’t know your style until you try it out. What I can tell you is that a good shoe is worth it once you start making some money, and are debt free. My next pair will likely be [these](http://www.colehaan.com/hamilton-grand-plain-toe-oxford-british-tan/C23765.html?dwvar_C23765_color=British%20Tan&dwvar_C23765_width=&utm_source=pj&utm_medium=affiliate&utm_campaign=26991&utm_content=8-11046&utm_source=pj&utm_medium=affiliate&utm_campaign=26991&utm_content=8-11046&utm_source=pj&utm_medium=affiliate&utm_campaign=26991&utm_content=8-11046#cgid=mens_shoes_dress&start=30), or a similar Cole Haan shoe. You saw the price tag and said ouch, and you thought I learned my lesson. I did. I originally told you how important it was to feel confident with what you’re wearing. I feel super confident with my entire look when I walk into work. That brings value to me. So while I don’t think $500 is the right number, I do think $200-$300 is a range I’d be willing to spend. I have 1.5 years on my current shoes and they still look new. My colleague just tossed his after 6 years. Nothing last forever. NOTHING! I’d rather spend an annualized $50 a year on a high quality shoe, than $50 a year on a junk shoe, that likely won’t even last a year. # Hair products I jumped from gel to pomade to hairspray trying to find the best value and product for many years. During college I rode a motorcycle to class, so I needed a product that could be restyled if it got messy, but I wasn’t willing to spend much money on it. I’ve been using [Murray’s Pomade](https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00V6WAFCO/ref=as_li_qf_asin_il_tl?ie=UTF8&tag=emkjerry-20&creative=9325&linkCode=as2&creativeASIN=B00V6WAFCO&linkId=08702ccd5c2e49995946ce8ae016b278) ever since. It’s an age old formula that works. You can usually find in your local grocery store for around $2. It’s super wax that is tough to get out and your barber will hate, but I wouldn’t have it any other way. # Socks Here’s where I begin to lose you. I’m starting a bit of a movement at my work. As I write this we’ve had temperatures in the 80s and 90s with enough humidity to have you looking like you were in a windy rain storm by the time you get into the office. Damp clothes; mop like hair; gross. I like comfort and function, so I started wearing these [no show socks](https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01MXQT6KK/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&tag=emkjerry-20&camp=1789&creative=9325&linkCode=as2&creativeASIN=B01MXQT6KK&linkId=19ff0c4452d41d5e4a75fc71e67a165c) with my dress shoes. I originally bought them as weekend attire, but I just couldn’t bring myself to put on the, thick, shin high socks, when Alexa was telling me it was going to be 90 outside. They’re a bit pricey, but so worth it. Some things are worth it, and these are one of them. Try a pair. I bet you’ll be switching out all your socks like I have. # The unmentionables If I didn’t lose you at the crazy sock idea, then I’ll surely lose you here. I clearly have no right to suggest what underwear you wear, but I’m going to anyway. Just because I’d be happy if someone turned me on to these sooner. I was a [tighty-whities](https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01N7RM8AC/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&tag=emkjerry-20&camp=1789&creative=9325&linkCode=as2&creativeASIN=B01N7RM8AC&linkId=4da74252457e2a76a88aa69f4d16ccb3) wearing kid (Had to give you a reference. Hope it made you giggle), thanks to my parents clearly amazing sense of style and comfort. Then I got cool in jr. high and wore boxer shorts, which bunched up and were too warm. Then in college it was the boxer briefs, which I was still pulling down constantly. Do you get a sense now of my trial and errors, and why I want to write this for you? Maybe some guys don’t ever switch routines, but I keep changing until I find what works for me. I at one point went too extreme. No more on that due to the PG rating we’ve agreed to. I finally ratcheted it back a notch and settled on [bikini briefs](https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005CW06XC/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&tag=emkjerry-20&camp=1789&creative=9325&linkCode=as2&creativeASIN=B005CW06XC&linkId=436a62246cea4dbdebf4d0786cf0860e). Yes you read that right. Don’t knock it until you try it. It’s about as close to freedom as one can come to, while still being a dignified adult. They allow me to practice ninja kicks in the mirror and have no extra material to ride up when sitting. Thaaat was personal. I think we just bonded there a little. Or you’re laughing at my expense. That’s cool, just be sure to leave me a tip. My comedy routines don’t pay well. I think I’ll leave it at that. I realize we all have our own style, but I hope some of my suggestions will help you find the confidence and value that I get out of my clothing. *If you found this valuable be sure to share with someone you think could benefit from it.* *[Subscribe](https://espressomykitchen.us18.list-manage.com/subscribe?u=b82754b0e974c5ffeead9c452&id=6cdd7a5dfb) for future posts if you want to hear about ways to earn more, save more, and build wealth.* If you’d like to save money while shopping online check out [Ebates](https://www.ebates.com/r/JERRYC702?eeid=28187) If you’re looking for more ways to save in-stores and online check out [Ibotta](https://ibotta.com/r/xorptsh) *If you found this helpful lets me know in the comments below.* *This post contains affiliate links. "title": "Business casual with value – Get the most value out of your clothing",
"body": "*Use these tips to get the most value out of your clothing*\n\n\n\nThere are many things I wish someone had given me some pointers on sooner, specifically in the work place. \n\n# You're going to need to earn money\nIf you think you’re just going to cut and save yourself to FI, you’re kidding yourself. Sure compound interest over time bleh bleh bleh. In 100 years you’ll have 1mm, great. You need to increase your income. I chose to do this by getting a career in finance. I knew it offered a high income potential, that could get me to FI sooner.\n\nMost of us aren’t FI yet, and if we are, some can’t bring themselves to let go of their work. For many our work is our identity, it shouldn’t be, but it is. I get it. So that means we’re still working. Even if you don’t work in an office, you may find this info useful for business meetings.\n\n# Dress to impress business casual\nThis post was inspired by a younger friend at work that was asking about tips on work attire. After all, my nick name at work has been Mr. GQ at times. Growing up we initially take our parents lead on how to dress. That could be good thing or leave you representing the 80’s. I think if I found this at the beginning of my career I’d find it helpful, so here we go.\n\n# Strategically frugal\nIf you’ve been following along so far with my previous posts, you’ll realize I may take some frugal extremes in some cases, like here –> [How to save 1k](https://www.espressomykitchen.com/how-to-save-1000-without-a-job/); yet I appear to spend recklessly in others. (I spent $500 on shoes for work…In my defense it was a moment of insanity, but I did get them for $425. And no I won’t be doing that again.) You don’t know until you try; hence why I want to share what I’ve found here.\n\n# Buy value\nMy motto in life is that I “buy value”. That doesn’t mean I’m always going to buy the cheapest thing, or wait for a discount if I need it immediately. I try to plan ahead so that I don’t run into situations where I need to spend urgently. I find I’m able to find better deals when I’m able to wait for the deals to come to me.\n\nNow that doesn’t mean I’ll go so cheap that I risk sacrificing the quality of something I’m producing with that item. Similarly, if it’s going to take spending $300 to complete something a week sooner, I’ll likely spend the money.\n\nAs I earn more, the more valuable my time becomes. Spending an hour or two to take an online surveys to earn $5 is fine when I was a broke college student, but as I progress, I put greater weight on my decisions of where to spend both my time and money.\n\nThere’s a saying: You can have it fast, cheap, or accurate – pick two. I think you’ll find that holds up in most aspects of life.\n\n# Thrift stores\nYes I work for a Wall st. firm, and I’ve shown up in clothes I’ve purchased from a thrift store. I’ve even received compliments on them. You’d be amazed what people give or throw away. I’d rather buy a quality blazer at a thrift store than a cheap suit from an outlet. Blazers and sport coats are the only things I’d still be willing to buy used at this point.\n\nMy first suit was a buy one, get one free, from the Men’s warehouse. No one mentioned I’d have to spend $120 getting those cheap suits tailored. Even then I was swimming in them. I cringe just thinking about how I looked in those suits. I probably only wore them a handful of times, yet it took me years to realize what a waste of money they were. I never felt comfortable in either one and eventually donated them.\n\nYou should feel confident in the clothes you wear. Don’t wear what society says you should; wear what you feel confident in. My mistake was letting the tailor tell me how it should fit, instead of me telling them what I wanted.\n\n# Suits\nMy favorite suits are hands down [Bar III](https://www.macys.com/shop/product/bar-iii-mens-slim-fit-active-stretch-suit-separates-created-for-macys?ID=5022925&CategoryID=17788&swatchColor=Blue&swatchColor=Blue#fn=BRAND%3DBar%20III%26SIZE%3D%26sp%3D1%26spc%3D586%26ruleId%3D78%7CBOOST%20SAVED%20SET%26searchPass%3DmatchNone%26slotId%3D2&ranMID=3184&ranEAID=AysPbYF8vuM&ranSiteID=AysPbYF8vuM-a.v0tIhWuE7by9Hh61wAaA&LinkshareID=AysPbYF8vuM-a.v0tIhWuE7by9Hh61wAaA&PartnerID=LINKSHARE&cm_mmc=LINKSHARE-_-5-_-63-_-MP563). I can buy them right off the shelf without tailoring them and they fit me perfect. They run slimmer, and have the modern European look; meaning less extra material and shorter jackets. I buy them usually in person at Macy’s.\n\nThey’re a great value. If you use a coupon and open a store credit card you can save a ton. Just be sure to pay the credit card off in full, or all those savings are lost to interest. Once you know your size, and stay with a consistent brand then you can order online. It’s still a bit dicey with suits though.\n\n# Shirts\nThere’s so many different brands of shirts out there. If you buy in NYC there’s no sales tax on clothing, so it’s literally $99 out the door.\n\nI found Charles Tyrwhitt because I like wearing [French cuff shirts](https://www.ctshirts.com/us/home?utm_term=3&marketing=true&utm_campaign=Ebates.com&utm_medium=link&ranSiteID=AysPbYF8vuM-TJdMhdCyJ08Rkrpud25n8Q&siteID=AysPbYF8vuM-TJdMhdCyJ08Rkrpud25n8Q&ranMID=3307&ranEAID=23803&utm_source=linkshare&utm_content=10001617), but had a hard time finding affordable ones. If you know what to buy, you can bypass the dry cleaners all together.\n\n# Under shirts\nIf you live in a cold climate or just sweat a ton then you need undershirts. Yes, you can afford this.\n\n# Pants\nMost offices have move to a more relaxed business casual dress code. I would still recommend wearing a suit on your first day. If someone tells you you’re overdressed, or you can see that your peers are dressed more casual, then I think this is one case where you’ll want to fit in. There is such thing as being overdressed. I know because I’ve been that guy…\n\nMy go to, are these machine washable [slacks](https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00BEDAERG/ref=as_li_qf_asin_il_tl?ie=UTF8&tag=emkjerry-20&creative=9325&linkCode=as2&creativeASIN=B00BEDAERG&linkId=35df5d11854e63a76b90392972023a9b) that I’ve bought on Amazon. And again, NO DRY CLEANERS!\n\n# Belts\nI should just say belt, because that’s all you’ll need. That’s how much I love it.\n\n# Shoes\nI was going back and forth on this one. NYC just tears up shoes in general.\n\nI’ve bought the cheap Marshall’s shoes for $30. I would not buy again.\n\nLook, you don’t know your limits until you push them. And you don’t know your style until you try it out. What I can tell you is that a good shoe is worth it once you start making some money, and are debt free. My next pair will likely be [these](http://www.colehaan.com/hamilton-grand-plain-toe-oxford-british-tan/C23765.html?dwvar_C23765_color=British%20Tan&dwvar_C23765_width=&utm_source=pj&utm_medium=affiliate&utm_campaign=26991&utm_content=8-11046&utm_source=pj&utm_medium=affiliate&utm_campaign=26991&utm_content=8-11046&utm_source=pj&utm_medium=affiliate&utm_campaign=26991&utm_content=8-11046#cgid=mens_shoes_dress&start=30), or a similar Cole Haan shoe.\n\nYou saw the price tag and said ouch, and you thought I learned my lesson. I did. I originally told you how important it was to feel confident with what you’re wearing. I feel super confident with my entire look when I walk into work. That brings value to me. So while I don’t think $500 is the right number, I do think $200-$300 is a range I’d be willing to spend. \n\nI have 1.5 years on my current shoes and they still look new. My colleague just tossed his after 6 years. Nothing last forever. NOTHING! I’d rather spend an annualized $50 a year on a high quality shoe, than $50 a year on a junk shoe, that likely won’t even last a year.\n\n# Hair products\nI jumped from gel to pomade to hairspray trying to find the best value and product for many years. It’s super wax that is tough to get out and your barber will hate, but I wouldn’t have it any other way.\n\n# Socks\nHere’s where I begin to lose you. I’m starting a bit of a movement at my work. As I write this we’ve had temperatures in the 80s and 90s with enough humidity to have you looking like you were in a windy rain storm by the time you get into the office. Damp clothes; mop like hair; gross.\n\nI like comfort and function, so I started wearing these [no show socks](https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01MXQT6KK/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&tag=emkjerry-20&camp=1789&creative=9325&linkCode=as2&creativeASIN=B01MXQT6KK&linkId=19ff0c4452d41d5e4a75fc71e67a165c) with my dress shoes. I originally bought them as weekend attire, but I just couldn’t bring myself to put on the, thick, shin high socks, when Alexa was telling me it was going to be 90 outside. They’re a bit pricey, but so worth it. Some things are worth it, and these are one of them. Try a pair. I bet you’ll be switching out all your socks like I have.\n\n# The unmentionables\nIf I didn’t lose you at the crazy sock idea, then I’ll surely lose you here. I clearly have no right to suggest what underwear you wear, but I’m going to anyway. Just because I’d be happy if someone turned me on to these sooner.\n\nI was a [tighty-whities](https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01N7RM8AC/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&tag=emkjerry-20&camp=1789&creative=9325&linkCode=as2&creativeASIN=B01N7RM8AC&linkId=4da74252457e2a76a88aa69f4d16ccb3) wearing kid (Had to give you a reference. Hope it made you giggle), thanks to my parents clearly amazing sense of style and comfort. Then I got cool in jr. high and wore boxer shorts, which bunched up and were too warm. Then in college it was the boxer briefs, which I was still pulling down constantly.\n\nDo you get a sense now of my trial and errors, and why I want to write this for you? Maybe some guys don’t ever switch routines, but I keep changing until I find what works for me.\n\nI at one point went too extreme. They allow me to practice ninja kicks in the mirror and have no extra material to ride up when sitting.\n\nThaaat was personal. I think we just bonded there a little. Or you’re laughing at my expense. That’s cool, just be sure to leave me a tip. My comedy routines don’t pay well.\n\nI think I’ll leave it at that. I realize we all have our own style, but I hope some of my suggestions will help you find the confidence and value that I get out of my clothing.\n\n*If you found this valuable be sure to share with someone you think could benefit from it.*\n\n*[Subscribe](https://espressomykitchen.us18.list-manage.com/subscribe?u=b82754b0e974c5ffeead9c452&id=6cdd7a5dfb) for future posts if you want to hear about ways to earn more, save more, and build wealth.*\n\nIf you’d like to save money while shopping online check out [Ebates](https://www.ebates.com/r/JERRYC702?eeid=28187)\nIf you’re looking for more ways to save in-stores and online check out [Ibotta](https://ibotta.com/r/xorptsh)\n\n*If you found this helpful lets me know in the comments below.*\n\n\n\n*This post contains affiliate links.
