| title | Tales from the Crypto Keeper #015 - Bitcoin this, blockchain that... Crypto Safety & What about the Taxman?? :O |
| body | Wow, it's been one crazy week. With no signs of slowing down, too. This is when the fear starts to set in. Can BTC really stay this high? How long will alts blast their ATHs (all time highs)on a daily basis? At this point, it seems like.. next year? One thing I've noticed is just how much I hear the words blockchain, crypto, bitcoin - and *bitcoins*. #normies ## Crypto: not so cryptic anymore As I've travelled through this wonderful space over the last year, I wondered so many times: when is the rest of the world going to notice all this is happening under their nose? I started trading and I was immediately **enamoured with the concepts - and the financial growth opportunities**. I told several friends and family about what I called **the new gold rush**. I emphasized the fact that it wouldn't be long until we would start hearing about it in the mainstream. **And here we are**. I look at Bloomberg and CNN Money and never fail to see t least 2 posts about Bitcoin (as if it's the only thing out there). I am even starting to see mainstream media wonder about Ethereum and Litecoin. And let's not talk about how much of my **Facebook newsfeed has gone crypto-crazy**. And not only that, but more and more companies - my employer included, are talking about how to leverage this *marvel of the internet*, latest world wonder. ### The normies are coming Now that BTC is NASDAQ-friendly, this is definitely a new world rising. I can safely say 1 out of 3 of my friends is now involved in the crypto-space. **The market cap went from $200B to nearly $600B**: case and point. And they are throwing their money at this in a frenzy. I'm glad this is happening, my monies keep going up and when BTC gets this high, the money gets redistributed throughout the alt market - where I make most of my trades. **FTW**. But with all this new tech they're using, I feel like I'm seeing how this could all blow up in their faces. People are buying, leaving on exchanges, not adding 2FA, probably using the same passwords they use for Facebook. Transferring money but not even aware of how the blockchain works so things like, "how do I know it's actually transferring?" and "so, wait, my money isn't on this piece of device?" are questions I get asked all the time. Now, I'll be clear, again: **I don't play games I can't win, and even less games I don't know the rules to.** So as much this shit ain't so cryptic, it's still every bit as dangerous to be playing with. So I thought a little refresher on how these things work would be nice... ### Crypto Safety One thing that scares the bejeezus out of me is the idea that **I could lose my private keys, and in consequence lose everything** I've dumped into this market. This is basically my life savings I'm talking about so **much like Wu-Tang Clan, crypto ain't nothing to fuck with**. Here are a few things you need to know and set up if you have not already: - **Avoid using the same email you use to sign in** everywhere and anywhere else: it's best for no one to know which email you use for any of this, reducing the risk for phishing scams and it ended up in super sweet mailing lists for erectile dysfunction. - **Do not use the same password you use anywhere else**: remember [Ransomware](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ransomware) and [Heartbleed](http://heartbleed.com)? These attacks are precisely why you **shouldn't ever use the same passwords for anything, let alone for your precious crypto**. - If you buy a coin and you're thinking of holding it medium to long term, pretty please, **get a wallet for it**. You don't want to have to leave your money on an exchange that *doesn't insure your money and could be hacked at **any time***. Not to mention, they could just close and run away with your money, ahhhhhh!! I highly suggest using a paper wallet or a hardware wallet, like the [Nano](https://www.ledgerwallet.com/products/ledger-nano-s ) or [Trezor](https://trezor.io/) wallet. - Be safe while you make transactions! Sending the **wrong currency to an address for another currency** means you have lost your funds. **Sending funds to the wrong address**, means you have lost your funds and someone else very happy but you are very very sad. Sending less than 0.1ETH anywhere means you need to send more ETH. These are things you learn, by reading the warning, and the fine prints. So this is even more important for all you newbies, this generation of people that accepts every checkbox without reading any of the actual text. **READ THE FUCKING FINE PRINT.** It **is** here to *fuck* with you. Pardon my colourful language. ## But how do I buy? [I've written about this before](https://steemit.com/cryptocurrency/@erratik/tales-from-the-crypto-keeper-item-004-withdrawing-in-canada), but to save you the trouble of going back to that post, here is a breakdown of buying and selling crypto in Canada. I don't use the traditional funding options, mostly to limit how much money I put into this on a weekly basis. This is why I like to use [Coinbase](http://coinbase.com): it limits my crazy ass from putting more than $1k into the market every week and it conveniently lets me use my debit card. If you want to put more in, I would suggest you use something like [QuadrigaCX](http://quadrigacx.com), with bank wire transfers. The real truth is I'm too lazy to go set that up, so I stick with Coinbase. **Wait, you only buy 3 coins?** Yes. I buy and hold ETH and LTC, *I use BTC for buying other currencies*. And then I sell them back into BTC if it's not something I am holding medium or long term. ETH and LTC get sent to my Nano for cold storage. With BTC, I send it to my favourite exchanges and buy other currencies. I personally use [Bitfinex](http://bitfinex.com), [Binance](http://binance.com), [Bittrex](http://bittrex.com) and [Liqui.io](http://liqui.io) (in no particular order). This gives me the possibility to fully diversify my altfolio. Let's be clear, this isn't exactly diversification, since all my money is in crypto and my retirement plan, lolz. And once I have made my profit, I trade back into BTC and send it back to be wallet! Voila! ### Okay... but have you even cashed out? This has got to be the *funniest meme* to enter the crypto space: the idea that nobody can cash out back to fiat and get their money back easily into their bank accounts, whence it once came from. **Untrue**. I know this, because I have done it. **In Canada, the easiest way is to use QuadrigaCX** and cash out. Simple. You have options, they explain how they work. There's no magic to it or any risk as far as far I know. Except like, if you try to get a cheque for hundreds of thousands of dollars. I have never tried, so yeah, not worried about that. Yet. One day, the owners of the exchange could buy themselves a bunch of lambos, assuming no one will need to cash out and when they day comes a few whales want to cash out, I hope they have the liquidity. But just remember, that in itself isn't any different than your own bank: it works on credit where crypto works on cash monies. The latter part making it something I trust more than central banking systems. ## Now the scary shit: what about taxes? I did much research online for how to handle this in Canada. **I have found little to no information**, to be honest. But from what I've gathered there are a few things to consider. Companies like **QuadrigaCX and Coinbase and the like will eventually be reporting to revenue agencies**. It's possible they don't right now, as I've seen no evidence to support it (at least not for QuadrigaCX). but it's inevitable that they will. In Canada, it seems, we should be taxed for every virtual currency transaction we make, when we are profiting. This means trading from BTC to ETH, ETH to XLM, you name it... if you made a profit, your taxes should work as follows: > (amount you made, assuming it's positive, minus fees) - (amount you initially paid, with fees) x 0.5 x your marginal tax rate. This is a *pain in the ass* because it means you need to keep track of all transactions, on all exchanges. Wow. **I'm 100% sure absolutely no one is doing this**. And then it gets **even more complicated** when talking about profits and **cashing out**. It's my understanding that it works as follows: - If you cash out **one fiscal year after the last trade** on it, you are considered a "long time trader" and the income is a **capital gain**, as mentioned above. This is just like how are work bonuses get taxed when we cash them out immediately instead of leave them in our RRSPs. - If you cash out **within a single fiscal year**, you *could* be flagged as a "professional trader", in which case your profit is considered part of your income, getting 100% taxed at the marginal rate instead of 50%. **Yeouch**. I don't know about you, but this is something to really consider. If you really are planning on using crypto to grow your capital, **assume you won't touch that money for another year** after your last trade, if you don't want Mr. Morneau reaching into your pockets for those taxes. Now I'm sure they don't really care if we are talking about small amounts, but when we are talking about *tens of thousands of dollars*, **this can hurt, big time**. **The best advice I've seen from a trader?** > [...] if you want to be safe, declare your income, pay your taxes and keep proof of your trades as a sign of good will. That way you will keep CRA far from you even and if they ask you proof, send it to them and you will never hear from them again. **My best advice?** I used to be a waitress, bartender and DJ: declare at least part of it, enough not to be flagged. In the service industry, that was about 1/3 of what I got in tips because I could chalk it up to being a bad waitress. Also, use cash as much as possible. I personally plan on selling most of my BTC through cash transactions to avoid this mess as long as I can. And I mean, if you hold for the long run, until crypto assets actually taxed by the CRA, you are laughing. **And wait one year.** That 50% capital gains tax is the worst thing ever invented by the Canadian Government. ### Obligatory disclaimer **If you just got in here, you are most at risk**. Let there be no mistaking it: a deep market correction will eventually come for us all. I advise to hold your children very closely. Frankly, I thought it would come when 10k BTC got here. And then when 15k BTC got here. Now 20k is upon us... You can bet my sell orders are ready... to be canceled! MWUAHAHA. **Are yours?** ;) Stay tuned for the next post about my trading adventures!! xoxo |

| title | Tales from the Crypto Keeper - Item #014 - Crypto hiatus losses + recovery, alt-frenzy & new longs, crypto-meow-meow?! |
| body | It has sure has been a long time since I updated the interwebs with my crypto adventures! And the long hiatus has taught me at least one lesson: **do not ever leave all your money with shitcoins you didn't really research** and look away for an entire month. What might happen, you ask? **Bitcoin could triple in value**, your holdings may super-deflate in value and you might **come back to a portfolio that has about half the value** you had in it when you last laid eyes on it. **Yeah. That sucked.** ## So what the shit happened? Well, personal stuff. Oh and my phone broke so **I lost all my 2FA accesses** and learned how *ill-prepared I was* for that. But after said stuff came and went, and I opened up my blockfolio to see what my portfolio looked like, I found I had **lost about 45% of my portfolio** to the last unsafe day trades I had done. **Patientory** (PTOY) dropped over 50%, **ReddCoin** - once one of my favourites, went from 30 satoshi to 10 satoshi... **Tirion** (TNT) slipped into oblivion, **pulverizing the profit** I'd made off ARK. And add **Iconomi** (ICN) and **TenX** (PAY) to my worst performers... Ugh. But **BTC... went parabolic** while I stopped looking. Last I'd checked, it was getting close to $3500. But now it was nearing the $7k mark, and with no end in sight, jumped to $8k. So the **real lesson was: when in doubt, just convert to BTC** or fiat, whichever you trust more. And then I was holding all these heavy ass bags. > **Fuck. This.** Said I. **Confucius once said**, sometimes it's better to take the loss up your butthole, and the tatters of your shame (read: money you have left) and re-invest it to re-coup whatever you can. So that was my new goal. ## The ever-trading alt-frenzy comeback kids I started moving lots of money around, and re-injected another good chunk to place into good performers instead of hedge all my bets on BTC. All the money I had left went to BTC, all the money I made in the last month or so has gone to several alts over the last few weeks, in and out. Some trades being all of one or two days long to maximize my gains as fast as possible, other positions I opened over a week or two. Over the past few weeks, some of the best winners for me have been: - **[Groestlcoin](https://www.groestlcoin.org/) (GRS) with an increase of 92% over a week.** A early segwit adopter, this coin is in continuous development, with new features coming out all the time and already features the [Lightning Network](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MpfvhiqFw7A) for almost zero fee transactions. Apparently the wallet can **send GRS over SMS which is neat**. There are tons of wallets for it and it is boasts asic resistance (fairer mining distribution). I'm looking out for this one over the next year. I'm waiting for a 7k satoshi entry point back into this one for a medium-term hold. - **[Einsteinium](https://www.emc2.foundation/) (EMC2) with an increase of 135% over a week.** A [POW](https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Proof_of_work) coin, EMC2's mission is to raise funds for scientific research using a mining tax that pools funds to provide grants to deserving applicants. I don't know what to say, **this is fucking great: Kickstarter for science**. This one has a lot of stuff coming in the roadmap, some of it simple and underway: hire developers, API for web wallet, implement auth... No to mention some rather ambitious milestones that haven't started yet: credit card to buy EMC2 directly, EMC2 debit card, open-source SDK, asset insurance, to name a few. But it definitely is interesting. Remains to be seen if it is actually promising in the next few months. I'll wait for the inevitable market-wide correction and try and scoop this up sub-$5k satoshis. - **[Voxelus](https://thevoxel.com/) with an increase of 161% over a week.** Voxelus is a **virtual reality game and experience creation platform for anyone, without any code**. It also features **multiplayer app to play the content created**, currently working on **Oculus Rift** and the **Samsung Gear VR**. It's quite possible this is coming to the HTC line of products soon. Honestly, I hated the wallet, it looked like shit, but there is *much talk of re-branding* so I'm confident this will eventually be a winner. I've held this coin on an off for the better part of a year and it's got great peaks and valleys to play off of for maximized gains. Their twitter has always been very active with updates and it seems they deliver on their milestones, so keeping an eye on this one, too. I'll hold out to around 1300 satoshis to get back in this game. I'm hopeful news is coming sooner rather than later... ## Long-term holding, newcomers Aside from the ones I know I won't keep very long the time being, I'm always storing some coins away for cold storage or for staking. One day I might mine, but I haven't wrapped my head around that stuff yet. Give it time, though... Those that will be constantly accumulated count BTC, LTC, ETH, and ARK. And then there are the ones I think are here to stay for a while in my wallets: - **[SALT](https://www.saltlending.com/) (SALT)** SALT is aiming to let you **leverage your blockchain assets to secure cash loans**. That's kind of cool. Instead of focusing on the borrower's creditworthiness: the most trustworthy system. Not gon' lie, I thought the branding was slick. Now I keep thinking how good... and possibly bad idea this is. But it's worth holding for a while, in my opinion. I'm going to hold it, and might even try to use it and report back on that. - **[OmiseGo](https://omisego.network/) (OMG)** OmiseGo promises to be the **decentralized exchange** we all wish for, on a **public blockchain at high volume and with low transaction costs**. Their network connected to the Ethereum mainnet, would enable anyone to do everything from payments and payroll to asset management and trading in an inexpensive way. For currency adoption, they claim the exchange won't pick favourite currencies, with their network being agnostic between fiat and decentralized money: a system built to favour the **Winners of the Great Crypto Wars of the 21st Century**. OMG is one of the only coins I sold when I mega failed. But I've been holding it again for a couple months now and it feels like it belongs. - **[Stellar Lumens](https://omisego.network/) (XML)** Stellar is amazing for micro payments. It cuts out the middleman to reduce transaction costs. It's already in use by Deloitte! This is also great for poorer communities like many on the African continent, where everyone has a cellphone, but not everyone has power, let alone wifi. Lumens **enable people to make payments through mobile messaging for stuff like healthcare, education, and energy**. This is one of the only things I bought when I started and never sold. And it seems I never will. There have been more moves, but insignificant enough that I can't remember them... # Oh and there's this. ## WHAT IN THE ACTUAL EFFING MEOW I may need to reconsider my ETH holdings. Or lack of cat holdings. -.-;;; |

| body | Solid article. Interesting to see I'm not the only one that is thinking about this. Blockchain is here to stay, therefore we shouldn't look at what most people invest in but in the real quality projects, with great teams, management and a great product. Some people are still investing in "an idea". Is an Idea worth 100m+ USD to you? Personally I always use: https://www.coincheckup.com This site is really helpful in my coin research. I don't know any other sites with so much indepth analysis. |

| body | No problem! :) I'm not sure what therapy your doing but if you havent tried it out yet maybe ask your therapist about CBT therapy, maybe something like that may help you. Or have you ever looked into meditation? It can take some time to get into but for some people it's an incredible benefit to their lives. For a while it helped me greatly with anxiety and how to get over problems. Kinda felt like you were taking a bath for your brain if that makes any sense. I don't think alot of people realize how tiring depression is just by itself, nevermind all the "solutions" you may have to go through in order to find one that helps or works. |

| body | That's some great advice right there. I usually go in with a bag of shit and ask my therapist to sort through it, so I'm definitely going in today with the idea that I want to try and come up with solutions and not just lay out problems I have no solutions to. One at a time, right? Thanks so much for reading, it actually helps to know people don't NOT care. ;) |

| body | Thanks so much for reading, @alcibiades. I think the key is check myself - reflect on my goals regularly, like you said, and re-evaluate myself every so often, see if I'm making progress. We usually are and don't notice small improvements or don't make it important enough to feel like things are getting better, so maybe celebrating a small victory like the fact that I got up early today is part of the work. ;) And don't worry, I have plenty to talk about when it comes to crypto. Now to get that motivation going again... :) |

| body | I'd say that if you try Therapy again and it doesn't work to maybe look at a completely different outlet. One of the things people with depression do is that you strengthen the negative thoughts and repetition in your brain over and over again. You need to do something to break that cycle. I myself suffer from depression and am a few years older than you and know how incredibly difficult it is to do. I always try to tell people don't think about huge goals, but start with tiny changes in life. Maybe just cleaning up your room, get rid of some clothing or items you no longer need, get rid of one piece of junk food your consuming and so on..so this way you improve your life bit by bit everyday and hopefully over time you will see the positive changes. Or at least if your going to go back into therapy please try to look at it as a positive change in your life instead of the bad intentions your already going in there with. Your sort of setting yourself up for failure in a way looking at it like that. |

| body | Used to read those crypto adventures from you, I'm sad to see you are in a bad place right now. Not sure I can help, though I've been in almost as bad situation few years back. What helped me was creating healthy habits, plant based diet and fresh juices, good sleep, meditation, affirmations, planning and reflecting on goals regularly. Well known stuff, but it worked for me. I've usually done this as part of a "morning ritual". Anyway, hope you'll feel better soon. Start small and you'll get there. :) |
