| body | **Governor Brown Approves Repeal of California High School Exit Exam** The California High School Exit Exam was previously used to gauge students to ability to meet academic standards in California, however, with changing standards, the test has been dismissed and repealed as an "outdated" test. The California High School Exit Exam was a mandatory test that students had to take in order to graduate high school. Recently, the exam was under scrutiny because there was a lack of alignment with the current academic standards. Back in late 2015, the Governor suspended the exam. This made the exam a non-requirement for graduation in school years 2015-16, 2016-17, 2017-18. AB 830 was a repeal of the exam and was signed by Governor Jerry Brown on Oct. 10, 2017. The bill passed with large support from Democrats. Assemblymembers Tom Lackey (R-36), Dante Acosta (R-38), and Rocky Chavez (R-76) were the only Republicans to support the repeal bill. The repeal was precipitated in 2015 when the suspension occurred. Turlock Unified School District Assistant Superintendent of Educational Services Heidi Lawler from 2015, when the CAHSEE was first suspended, relayed what local school district like TUSD knew when the CAHSEE was suspended. Lawler (2015) on CAHSEE Suspension and what the District was aware of regarding the impacts: "Governor Jerry Brown suspended the California High School Exit Exam after signing off on two amendments to Senate Bill 172. First administered in the 2003-04 school year, the California High School Exit Exam has been a staple of testing in schools. In order to get a High School Diploma, students needed to pass the exam’s assessments for math and English Language Arts. The primary amendment for Senate Bill 172 suspends the CAHSEE and removes it as a requirement for graduation from high school for the 2015-16, 2016-17, and 2017-18 school years. The second amendment would, until July 31 2018, require the Turlock Unified School District, and the State Department of Education on behalf of state special schools, to grant a high school diploma to any student who complete grade 12 in 2003-04 or following school year who has completed all graduation requirements other than the passing of the CAHSEE. This amendment will be repealed on July 31 2018 unless another statute is enacted that repeals or extends the date. The California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress is established by law as the statewide system of student assessment. That law requires the Superintendent to submit to the state board recommendations on expanding the CASSPP to include additional assessments to be considered at a public meeting and to also submit those recommendations to committees of the Legislature and Director of Finance. The bill requires that the Superintendent gathers an advisory panel consisting of specified individuals. This panel would provide recommendations to the Superintendent on the continuation of the CAHSEE and possible alternative routes to satisfy high school graduation requirements." Also in 2015, State Superintendent Tom Torlakson chimed into the conversation, regarding the CAHSEE suspension, asserting that the exam was outdated. With the exam's repeal, the California Teacher's Association is celebrating the decision to fully repeal the CAHSEE dismissing it as another "outdated" test. |

| body | 11 officers from across the country are preparing themselves for a few hours of pain to raise awareness for the men and women of law enforcement who gave their lives for their communities. To raise awareness and raise funds, they’ll be risking heat stress and fatigue as they run the 26.2 mile Marine Corps Marathon clad in full uniform and 25 pounds of gear. For at least three officers, the stress and risk of their charitable run has not gone unnoticed. “Insanity,” remarked Detective Sean Dodge of Modesto Police Department with a laugh. “Sheer craziness,” added Captain Jim Gordon of the Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Department. “As far as nervousness of beginning the race with 25 pounds of gear and going into heat stress, there’s some nerves going on,” said Lt. Neil Cervenka of Turlock Police Department,” but, just like how you eat an elephant, one bite at a time. You just take that first step and you go.” The Marine Corps Marathon is the most recent endeavor the trio will be taking on- after having already bested the Peace Officer Memorial Run’s half marathon in full uniform last year along with a full marathon completed in December 2016, garnering over $20,000 for fallen law enforcement by the end of the year. For the marathon, Cervenka, Gordon, and Dodge will be joined by officers from around the country, forming a team of 11 runners. The 11 runners are seeking all of the risk with none of the reward as they aim to raise $50,000 in funds nationwide to split among four law enforcement charities that support the families of fallen law enforcement and honor the memories of officers. Put together by Detective Dodge last October, the effort combines his passion for running and his passion for his job. With the effort, it allows Dodge to raise awareness for law enforcement and “get in touch with the community a little more and show that we’re human, that we’re out there and we love our brothers and our sisters out there. We want to support them in times of crisis as well.” “I had the goal of finishing a marathon in California at the State Capitol and then doing one in Washington D.C. I didn’t realize it would happen this quick, but we’re taking on the Marine Corps Marathon in Washington D.C.,” said Dodge. The 11 runners will be participating in that marathon under the name Project Remember. The efforts dedication toward support the law enforcement and families of law enforcement was one of the main reasons some officers were recruited. “I fell in love with the idea. I’ve been in law enforcement for about 17 years and I’ve been to several funerals and I’ve gotten to see the families that are left behind. The idea of raising funds to support those families stirred my heart,” added Cervenka. “It’s a great way to bring awareness to the violence on police officers and trying to honor and leave something for the families as well,” said Gordon. For their daunting task, the officers will be training up until the day of the race. Cervenka will be doing his best to simulate the run, using a training bulletproof vest, training boots, old duty belt with ten pounds of chain to simulate his gear, and a sweatshirt to simulate the uniform. Dodge intends on doing his regular runs and the local runs that he does in uniform such as Soaring Over Ripon and running a 10k in Escalon. As he trains, he’ll be building up his mileage incrementally, all the way up to 20 miles, before tapering down a month before the race. Gordon will depend on his usual running routine, limiting the amount of times he’ll be running in uniform and boots and also limiting the toll the added weight can put on the body. As the race approaches, he’ll be running a little more in uniform to be sure he has the feel for it. As the officers head to their first D.C. marathon together, they’ll find themselves supported by Congressman Jeff Denham (CA-10) as they head into the race. “We’ve lost too many in our community. Too many officers that have put their lives on the line and left families behind that are still struggling to put pieces back together,” said Congressman Denham. “Having these gentlemen being willing to run in the Marine Corps Marathon to raise money and awareness not only brings awareness to the heavy burden that these families but certainly the tough battles that our law enforcement goes through every single day.” Project Remember will be participating in Marine Corps Marathon on Oct. 22. Those interested in contributing to their cause can do so at this link. All donated funds are evenly distributed to National Concerns of Police Survivors, Answering the Call, the California Peace Officers Memorial Foundation, and the Peace Officer Memorial Group. https://youtu.be/LPKO9nlwOv8 |

We want to support them in times of crisis as well.”\n\n“I had the goal of finishing a marathon in California at the State Capitol and then doing one in Washington D.C. I didn’t realize it would happen this quick, but we’re taking on the Marine Corps Marathon in Washington D.C.,” said Dodge. \n\nThe 11 runners will be participating in that marathon under the name Project Remember. The efforts dedication toward support the law enforcement and families of law enforcement was one of the main reasons some officers were recruited.\n\n“I fell in love with the idea. I’ve been in law enforcement for about 17 years and I’ve been to several funerals and I’ve gotten to see the families that are left behind. The idea of raising funds to support those families stirred my heart,” added Cervenka. \n\n“It’s a great way to bring awareness to the violence on police officers and trying to honor and leave something for the families as well,” said Gordon.\n\nFor their daunting task, the officers will be training up until the day of the race. \n\nCervenka will be doing his best to simulate the run, using a training bulletproof vest, training boots, old duty belt with ten pounds of chain to simulate his gear, and a sweatshirt to simulate the uniform. \n\nDodge intends on doing his regular runs and the local runs that he does in uniform such as Soaring Over Ripon and running a 10k in Escalon. As he trains, he’ll be building up his mileage incrementally, all the way up to 20 miles, before tapering down a month before the race.\n\nGordon will depend on his usual running routine, limiting the amount of times he’ll be running in uniform and boots and also limiting the toll the added weight can put on the body. As the race approaches, he’ll be running a little more in uniform to be sure he has the feel for it. \n\nAs the officers head to their first D.C. marathon together, they’ll find themselves supported by Congressman Jeff Denham (CA-10) as they head into the race.\n\n “We’ve lost too many in our community. Too many officers that have put their lives on the line and left families behind that are still struggling to put pieces back together,” said Congressman Denham. “Having these gentlemen being willing to run in the Marine Corps Marathon to raise money and awareness not only brings awareness to the heavy burden that these families but certainly the tough battles that our law enforcement goes through every single day.”\n\nProject Remember will be participating in Marine Corps Marathon on Oct. 22. | body | 11 officers from across the country are preparing themselves for a few hours of pain to raise awareness for the men and women of law enforcement who gave their lives for their communities.

"body": "11 officers from across the country are preparing themselves for a few hours of pain to raise awareness for the men and women of law enforcement who gave their lives for their communities.\n\nTo raise awareness and raise funds, they’ll be risking heat stress and fatigue as they run the 26.2 mile Marine Corps Marathon clad in full uniform and 25 pounds of gear. For at least three officers, the stress and risk of their charitable run has not gone unnoticed. \n\n“Insanity,” remarked Detective Sean Dodge of Modesto Police Department with a laugh. \n\n“Sheer craziness,” added Captain Jim Gordon of the Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Department.\n\n“As far as nervousness of beginning the race with 25 pounds of gear and going into heat stress, there’s some nerves going on,” said Lt. Neil Cervenka of Turlock Police Department,” but, just like how you eat an elephant, one bite at a time. You just take that first step and you go.”\n\nThe Marine Corps Marathon is the most recent endeavor the trio will be taking on- after having already bested the Peace Officer Memorial Run’s half marathon in full uniform last year along with a full marathon completed in December 2016, garnering over $20,000 for fallen law enforcement by the end of the year.\n\nFor the marathon, Cervenka, Gordon, and Dodge will be joined by officers from around the country, forming a team of 11 runners. The 11 runners are seeking all of the risk with none of the reward as they aim to raise $50,000 in funds nationwide to split among four law enforcement charities that support the families of fallen law enforcement and honor the memories of officers.\n\nPut together by Detective Dodge last October, the effort combines his passion for running and his passion for his job. With the effort, it allows Dodge to raise awareness for law enforcement and “get in touch with the community a little more and show that we’re human, that we’re out there and we love our brothers and our sisters out there. 22. Those interested in contributing to their cause can do so at this link. | body | Hi Steemit, My name is Eric Escalante and I'm a former reporter for TurlockCityNews.com and a current freelance reporter/writer. I'm from California's Central Valley where almonds, water, and farming are some biggest drivers of the local economic engines. As a former local news reporter, I've come to know a lot about my town, the water issues, economic issues, and political issues that are always lingering behind decisions and the direction of the City. Working at TCN, I impacted a local City Council election, a controversial farmers market decision, road funding, and I also revealed new information on the growing confusion with the Convention and Visitor's Bureau for the City of Turlock. My work tends to consume a lot of what I do. I would sleep with the police scanner on to bring breaking news at any time of day and work from day until night to be sure all content was accurate and useful to my community. Beyond that, I'm a culinary enthusiast. I don't do anything to fancy; I prefer to stick to a budget and make food that I can share with others. That being said, I also enjoy eating out when I'm alone. It's not as much fun cooking for myself as it is cooking for others who can tell me that they love my food. I love cooking, but its possible I like the compliments even more. Chef knives are also a fancy of mine. My collection includes Victorinox, Dexter Russell, Messermeister, Cutco, J.A. Henckels, Lamsonsharp, Global, Shun, Mercer, and Wusthof. I'm always looking for new knives to try out, and I've even gotten interested in knife sharpening with whetstones. Other hobbies include console gaming, Yugioh! (Legacy of the Duelist), tabletop (Pathfinder), and some movies, good TV, and a few animes. However, the biggest hobby I have is with WWE, professional wrestling. I get some chides for liking this (in good fun, of course), but I've always proudly addressed myself as a wrestling fan. I'm hoping to do some posts regarding knives, cooking, wrestling, product reviews, and various other topics that may interest the Steemit community. |
