By the evening intensive trench warfare erupted on Gorlovka and Donetsk outskirts, as well as in the area of Yasinovataya checkpoint. Ukrainian side used heavy artillery and small arms.\n\n\nThe situation remains tense on the Gorlovka direction. Zaytsevo, Golmovsky and Shyrkoaya Balka villages were shelled by Ukrainian artillery. Houses were damaged. This morning died Zaytsevo village resident who was blown up by a tripwire last evening. The tripwire was presumably set by the enemy’s sabotage-recon group near the residential area.\n\nResidents of northern and western districts of Donetsk hear artillery shell explosions throughout the evening. Donetsk airport, Spartak village, Aleksandrovka and Kirovsky district of the city are being shelled by Ukraine.\n\nUkrainian army today also shelled Dokuchaevsk and Lyubovka village.\n\nThe situation is also far from calm on the southern borders of DPR. The enemy shelle Oktyabr, Kominternovo, Leninskoye and Sakhanka villages. Damage of residential buildings is being reported.\n\nThis night Ukrainian saboteurs damaged the main communication wires of mobile operators in the area of Uglegorsk. Repair works are underway.\n\nDPR recon registered the positions of six “Giatsint” self-propelled artillery guns in the area of Slavnoye and Georgievka villages south-west of Donetsk, positions of three D-30 howitzers were uncovered in Novomikhaylovka. First Kievsky district in the north of Donetsk was shelled by 152mm artillery guns. Then Petrovsky district in the west of the city came under artillery fire.\n\nYet again the building of “Shakhterochka” kindergarten near the frontline was damaged as a result of shelling. Seven houses were also damaged. Residential areas of Petrovsky district and Tekstilhik microdistrict, as well as Cheliuskintsev, Skochinskogo and Abakumova mines lost access to power supply. The damage to power lines was repaired thanks to rapid actions of Donetsk utility services.\n\nUkrainian army fired 290 shells at frontline areas of the Republic during the past day. Artillery was used 261 times. According to DPR Defense Ministry, one serviceman was killed, another one was injured.\n\nRecon spotted the arrival of nine “Giatsint” self-propelled artillery guns to Konstantinovka. Three “Grad” multiple-launch rocket systems were discovered near Novgorodskoye village on the Gorlovka direction. Four mortar squads were uncovered in Novotroitskoye village of Volnovakha region.",

During the night Zaytsevo village near Gorlovka, Dokuchaevsk town south of Donetsk, Grigorovka, Kominternovo, Leninskoye and Sakhanka villages in the south of DPR came under Ukrainian fire.\n\n\n10 122mm artillery shells were fired at Dokuchaevsk. Four villages on Mariupol direction came under intensive shelling. A house was damaged in Grigorovka village, two houses were damaged in Kominternovo, four – in Leninskoye village, another three residential buildings were damaged in Sakhanka village. Some of the houses burned downed or were fully destroyed. No human casualties were reported.\n\nDPR recon registered positions of three self-propelled “Gvozdika” artillery guns near Avdeevka occupied by Ukrainian military north of Donetsk. West of Donetsk, near Krasnogorovka, four mortar detachments were discovered. Three D-30 howitzers and two “Grad” multiple launch rocket systems arrived to Granitnoye village. Positions of another four mortars were spotted on the Gorlovka direction in the area of Novgorodskoye village.\n\n180 ceasefire violations occurred on August 21. However, the classes in the school continued. The roof has been restored, and the interior finishing work is going to be completed by the beginning of the school year. The repair works are performed by a local construction firm as part of the national program for the repair of the educational facilities. Building materials used have been delivered by Russia as humanitarian aid by so-called ‘white convoys’ (*trucks of the Russian humanitarian convoys to Donbass are colored in white – Editor*).\n\n“-Just a few finishing touches has to be put, and the school will open its doors. On Knowledge Day (*in Ukraine, Russia and a number of other former Soviet republics this term is used to refer to the 1st of September, the day when the school year traditionally starts – Editor*), 365 schoolchildren will come to the school”, - the Head of the School summed up.\n\nIn Donetsk People’s Republic, repair of educational and child care institutions destroyed and damaged by the military actions continues. 787 kindergartens, schools, and higher education institutions were damaged. 280 of them have been fully restored, and about 270 are being repaired. This year, more than 130 thousand schoolchildren including more than 14 thousand first-graders will go to schools.",

The readers of our newspaper can view these lectures online (*unfortunately, as of now only available in Russian – Editor*).\n\nHere I will continue the article I started earlier – “Escalation of the Global Gas War.”\n\nLet me remind you that in the first and second parts of this article we discussed the main stages and directions of the post-Soviet economic wars against Russia in the “gas front”.\n\n\nWe reviewed U.S. policy aimed at pushing the Russian gas exports out of Europe by political measures (by creating problems and risks for Russian gas transit through Ukraine).\n\nWe discussed the response of Russia, involving the construction of infrastructure for gas exports to Europe to bypass Ukraine, i.e. the already constructed pipeline North Stream and a designed gas pipeline South Stream.\n\nWe reviewed the legal obstacles for the Russian has export created by the European Commission “under the careful guidance of the Americans” (the restrictions in the European “gas directives”)\n\nWe analyzed the attempts to replace the Russian gas in Europe with the Azerbaijani, Turkmen and the Middle Eastern Qatari one.\n\nLet us continue discussing the topic.\n\nThe competition between the “Qatari gas pipeline” and “Shiite gas main line”, which led to an undeclared hot war between the USA, NATO, and the Sunni countries of the Persian Gulf against Syria was not the only “gas” aspect of the dramatic events of the Middle East policy.\n\nIn this sense, very serious problems for the USA, NATO and the interested parties of the region were created by the political events in Egypt and the new force that emerged in the region – The Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL).\n\n# “The Egyptian bottleneck” and the Muslim Brotherhood\n\nThe [“color revolution” instigated by the USA and the Arab countries of the Gulf in 2011](http://www.kurginyan.ru/books/polit_tsunami_eng.pdf) brought Muslim Brotherhood to power in Egypt. This powerful Sunni Islamist organization, skillfully hiding behind publicly declared social objectives of their Caliphatist ambitions and military and terrorist capabilities, has a strong political position not only in Egypt. Its major offices are active in almost all regions of the Islamic world, including Africa and the Middle East.\n\nIt is significant that the US government supported the Muslim Brotherhood in Cairo, continuing to transfer annual aid to Egypt in the amount of $ 1.3 billion as was set in 1978 according to the results of its peace agreement with Israel in Camp David. But even more overt support was provided to the new Egyptian authorities by Qatar, which, according to different sources, allocated to the Muslim Brotherhood government, headed by Mohammed Morsi, aid in the amount of 11 to 13 billion dollars.\n\nThe Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood at once started to support the anti-government rebellion in Syria. And as the Syrian Muslim Brotherhood for a long time have been the main enemy of the Syrian government, at the turn of the 1980’s they unleashed the most ruthless campaign of terror against the power of the Alawite Assad clan, and in 2011 immediately became one of the key fighting groups of the Syrian “color revolution”. Therefore, again, the main force of international support and the main sponsor of the Muslim Brotherhood has long been Qatar, interested in overthrowing Bashar al-Assad both politically and “gas-wise”, i.e. economically.\n\nHowever, these processes have created a violent internal conflict in the “Arab commonwealth”. Saudi Arabia has justifiably seen such a pronounced strengthening of the political profile of the Muslim Brotherhood (and therefore of Qatar behind their backs) as an infringement upon their role of the unconditional political and spiritual leader in the world of Sunni Islam. Moreover, as the Qatari government did not just actively supported the Caliphatist ambitions of the Muslim Brotherhood. According to the Saudis, Qatar also participated in the revitalization of the protests of the Shiite (!) opposition against the ruling Sunni Royal al-Khalifa family in Bahrain, where the base of the Fifth Fleet of the United States is located. And where the Cooperation Council for the Arab States of the Gulf, the GCC (which is, effectively, Saudi Arabia), has created its own permanent military base.\n\nThis conflict resulted in two almost simultaneous political coups. June 25, 2013 the Emir of Qatar Hamad al-Thani, a very active supporter of the Muslim Brotherhood, suddenly handed over power to his 33-year-old son Tamim al-Thani, who sacked the chief ideologist of Muslim Brotherhood support, Prime Minister Hamad bin Jassim, but also said that he would pursue the policy of Qatar in full accordance with the precepts of his father.\n\nAfter that, on July 3, 2013 the defense Minister of Egypt Abdul Fattah Al-Sisi announced the overthrow of President Mohammed Morsi and began immediately to suppress mass protests of the Muslim Brotherhood. This provoked the indignation of the United States with “undemocratic character” of the new government — both in respect to the overthrow of the “democratically elected” Morsi, and in respect of the repressions against the Muslim Brotherhood.\n\nHowever, Al-Sisi immediately enlisted the promises of Saudi Arabia and its Arab allies to compensate for possible cancelling annual investments in the Egyptian economy estimated at $ 1.3 billion by the USA. Thus virtually cutting off support to the Muslim Brotherhood in Syria. Then in May 2014 Al-Sisi was triumphantly elected — as it turned out, to a great extent, on the basis of the militant anti-Americanism of the overwhelming majority of Egyptian society — for the post of the President of Egypt.\n\nMeanwhile, the new Emir of Qatar Tamim al-Thani fulfilled his promise to follow his father’s course and continued support of the Muslim Brotherhood both in Egypt and in Syria. Which was increasingly contrary to the interests of the Saudis, as they focused their actions on strengthening the so-called “moderate” opposition in Syria for war with al-Assad, politically acceptable for the West who joined this war. As for Qatar, it supported in Syria is not only the very radical Syrian Muslim Brotherhood but also other ultra-radical jihadist groups, thereby constantly compromising anti-Assad opposition.\n\nIn addition, the Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood with the support of Qatar and in alliance with the sheikhs of the Bedouin tribes launched a large-scale terrorist war in Egypt, in the north of the Sinai Peninsula. That is, they began to intensify an inter-Arab rift in the region. The GCC countries realized that the policy of Qatar potentially means turning Egypt, the largest country of the region in terms of population and military potential, into their enemy. Which they by no means wanted to let happen. In addition, one of the main goals of unleashing terror in the Sinai was the so-called Arab gas pipeline, a very important component of the income from the export infrastructure in Egypt.\n\nBut we will return to the “Arab gas pipeline” later. Now let us talk about the other “pain points” of increased tensions between Qatar and other GCC countries.\n\n# ISIL, Qatar and the “Arab Rift”\n\nSince the summer of 2013 a new radical terrorist force — ISIL (Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant), now simply called Islamic State (IS) — burst in Syria.\n\nArab neighbors of Syria quickly realized that the main “creators” of this force were the Muslim Brotherhood, Qatar and a number of NATO countries headed by the USA. And that this power actually raised similar (or the same) claim for the total (including political and ideological) leadership in the Sunni Islamic world as the Muslim Brotherhood— for the establishment of a Caliphate. But ISIL/IS also backed up these claim with a powerful military and political organization (comprised of a significant portion of the officer corps of the Iraqi army of Saddam Hussein, disbanded by the Americans) and unprecedented terrorist determination of the Islamist core, which included fragments of al-Qaida.\n\nThe GCC countries also understood the fact that the matter was no longer about the transformation of Syria into a moderate theocratic state controlled by the Sunni Saudis. That IS claim was for a full-fledged Caliphatist (that is, deeply hostile to GCC) alternative.\n\nAt the same time the Arab neighbors accused Qatar — and not without reason — of other “mortal” sins. Namely:\n\n* in support of Yemen’s Houthis (Shiite sheikhs that have long encroached on a part of the Saudi territory);\n\n* that sponsored by Qatar Muslim Brotherhood and Jabhat al-Nusra carried out military operations in Syria against the Saudi-created Islamic Front in alliance with IS;\n\n* the fact that Qatar was “flirting” with Iran so in case of failure of its pipeline project it would be able to join the “Shiite gas pipeline.“\n\nThe conflict between Qatar and other Arab countries was steadily intensifying. So on 5 March, 2014 Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates announced an unprecedented unfriendly step — they recalled their ambassadors from Doha. In the international diplomatic practice, this is often the last step before a declaration of war. In a joint statement in connection with the recall of ambassadors these countries also openly violated the Eastern diplomatic etiquette requiring flowery politeness. They extremely sharply *“expressed the hope that <…> Qatar would take immediate steps to implement the agreements of the GCC in matters of security and would protect the people of the region from differences.“*\n\nHowever, the period of such sharp confrontation did not last long. Because of the “world oil and gas price war” that began in September 2014, both Qatar and its Arab neighbors found themselves in a need of Arabian political unity. The talks, which began under the mediation of the Emir of Kuwait, ended in December 2014 with restoration of relations and return of the Arab ambassadors to Doha.\n\nAt the same time, as reported by Arab sites, Qatar pledged to temper the anti-Egyptian and anti-Saudi rhetoric of its TV channel al Jazeera, to stop supporting subversive activities of the Muslim Brotherhood in the Egyptian Sinai, as well as economic and military support to Jabhat al-Nusra and IS in Syria.\n\nAfter that, al-Jazeera really calmed down somewhat, and as for Jabhat al-Nusra and ISIL, they began (at least in Syria) to lose ground. At the beginning of February 2015, local militia and Kurdish self-defense forces, the Peshmerga, liberated the Syrian city of Kobani on the border with Turkey, besieged and captured by IS in the fall. And the Syrian army of President Assad “squeezed” militants of Jabhat al-Nusra out of the area of Dayr al ‘Adas in Deraa province, thereby cutting the main supply routes of the militants from Jordan.\n\nHowever, the terrorist attacks of Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt continued. Zaytsevo village north of Gorlovka, Yasinovataya center, Spartak, Trudovskie, Aleksandrovka villages and Kirovsky district of Donetsk, Dokuchaevsk, as well as Grigorevka, Kominternovo and Sakhanka villages came under Ukrainian fire.\n\n\nYesterday late in the evening information about destruction caused in Zaytsevo village during the day by artillery shelling arrived. Massive shelling by Ukrainian punitive forces damaged at least 19 houses on eleven streets of the village. At 16:25 a 78-year old man was injured. He was hospitalized. The head of Zaytsevo village administration received a concussion.\n\nToday it became known that a 44-year old civilian in Kirovsky district of Donetsk, as well as one serviceman, were killed by shrapnel. Another five people were injured as a result of Ukrainian army shelling in Zaytsevo, Yasinovataya, Petrovsky district of Donetsk and in Kominternovo. Two houses were damaged on Chernigovskaya and Chekhova streets in Trudovskie village.\n\nDPR recon reports that Mariupol direction force of Ukrainian army, as well as the other parts of the frontline, were strengthened. Three D-30 howitzers were spotted near Talakovka. 22 infantry fighting vehicles (IFV) were spotted near Artyomovsk. Nine “Giatsint-B” artillery guns, two “Nona” self-propelled artillery guns and nine IFVs are accumulated near Prokhorovka. Positions of four mortars are registered in Granitnoye.\n\nOn August 20 Ukrainian military violated the ceasefire 520 times. Ukrainian army fired 348 artillery shells at the territory of the Republic.",

Golmovsky and Zaytsevo villages north of Gorlovka, Yasinovataya outskirts and Trudovskie village west of Donetsk, Elenovka and Styla near Dokuchaevsk, Kominternovo and Sakhanka villages in the south of DPR came under Ukrainian army fire.\n\n\nEvery evening and night intensive trench warfare takes place in Zaytsevo village, divided between the conflicting sides. Today yet another house was destroyed by a 152mm artillery shell, another several buildings were damaged. Two local water supply pumping stations were damaged in Golmovsky village nearby.\n\nThis morning a civilian was lightly wounded by a shrapnel in Petrovsky district of Donetsk during a shelling. A gas pipeline was damaged on Lieutenant Nikolenko, Urozhaynaya and Karnavalnaya streets in the same district.\n\nA total of 30 houses were damaged during the night shelling in the Republic. Zaytsevo village near Gorlovka and Styla village in Starobeshevsky region received the most damage.\n\nDPR recon continues to report facts of the presense of heavy hardware of Ukrainian army at the contact line. “Grad” multiple launch rocket system, three “Akatsiya” self-propelled guns, three “Gvozdika” self-propelled guns and three 122mm mortars were spotted in Granitnoye village. Six D-30 howitzers were spotted in Dzerzhinsk. Three Ukrainian army tanks were spotted near Avdeevka.\n\nDuring the previous day, August 19, Ukrainian punitive forces violated the ceasefire 480 times, 435 times by artillery.",

Windows were damaged in many houses. Fences, gas pipe, garage and the car inside were damaged as well. One civilian was injured in the leg. City’s utility services quickly welded the gas pipe and repaired the power lines. Local residents continue to clear the debris and curse the criminals, who took over the power in Ukraine. Zaytsevo village north of Gorlovka, Yasinovataya, Spartak, Trudovskie and Aleksandrovka villages, Kirovsky district of Donetsk, Elenovka and Styla near Dokuchaevsk, Petrovskoye, Novolaspa, Belaya Kamenka, Novaya Marevka, Kominternovo, Leninskoye and Sakhanka villages in the south of DPR came under fire.\n\n\nYesterday as a result of shelling a fire erupted on the territory of Donetsk water filtration plant, situated between Yasinovataya and occupied Avdeevka. The plant supplies Donetsk and a number of villages on the both sides of the frontline with water and is regularly shelled by Ukrainian army. Low pressure in water supply systems is being observed in the last couple of days in several districts of Donetsk.\n\nThe roof of school № 103, gas pipeline and a house on Karnavalnaya street were damaged by artillery fire in Petrovsky district of Donetsk. The facades and glass in windows of apartment buildings on Biriuzovaya street were damaged in Kirovsky district of Donetsk. Houses and power lines on two streets of Styla village were damaged. Artillery fire damaged the roof and windows of several houses in Novolaspa village.\n\nUkrainian punitive forces fired 3805 shells at DPR territory over the past week. Out of these, 3308 times heavy weaponry was used. Ukrainian army fire damaged and destroyed 72 houses. Six people died as a result of Ukrainian aggression, five of them were servicemen, another six were injured.",

They also fired mortars, infantry fighting vehicle guns, grenade launchers and small arms. Zaytsevo village and Gorlovka, Vasilevka, Mineralnoye, Yakovlevka villages, Avdeevka industrial zone and Yasinovataya outskirts, Trudovskie and Aleksandrovka villages west of Donetsk, Elenovka, Yasnoye village near Dokuchaevsk came under fire. At least 20 buildings were damaged, three of them caught fire.\n\nTwo power lines were damaged by night shelling in Gorlovka, approximately 80 electrical substations lost power supply. Two houses on Elena Kolesova street are destroyed. Electrical substation and a warehouse are damage on Rumyantseva mine. Six miners were inside the mine during the shelling. There are no human casualties.\n\nTwo houses on Kurortnaya street, a cafe and electrical pylon was damaged as a result of shelling of Yasinovataya. Yet again a watch post of the Joint Center for Ceasefire Control and Coordination came under Ukrainian army fire. A non-residential building near the post caught fire as a result of a direct hit.\n\nFour houses on Lenina and Kirova streets were damaged in Aleksandrovka village on the western outskirt of Donetsk.\n\nOne apartment building and one house were damaged in Yasnoye village near Dokuchaevsk.\n\nDPR recon spotted new positions of Ukrainian military and the movement of military hardware banned by Minsk Agreements at the contact line. One “Grad” multiple-launch rocket systems and four 122mm mortars were uncovered near Granitnoye village. Three “Gvozdika” self-propelled artillery guns were uncovered in Novotroitskoye area near Volnovakha. Movement of three enemy tanks was spotted in Novogrigorovka village near Debaltsevo. Approximately 400 servicemen of “Goryn” battalion arrived to Donskoye village of Volnovakha district. Ukrainian army continues to conduct reconnaissance by drones along all of the frontline.\n\nAccording to latest data, Ukrainian punitive forces fired 428 shells at DPR territory on August 17, 388 of these were artillery shells.",

I was against Poland(yup I'm from this shithole) building LPG terminal because I considered it costly and unnecessary. Now I'm glad government build it. \n\nFirst we now have a direct contract with Quatar - still more expensive than russian one but no middle man involved.\n\n Second with marine terminal we can buy gas from any one willing to sell. Photo by Alireza824, CC 3.0</center>\n\n# A new stage in competition for the European gas market\nParticular interest in the Russian gas pipeline project South Stream was expressed by Bulgaria, Serbia, Romania, Hungary, Greece, and Italy. The reasons are obvious — they are the countries most dependent on gas transit supplies from Russia through Ukraine.\n\nIn October 2011, there was incorporated an international company, operator of gas pipeline construction  South Stream Transport, a joint company of Gazprom (50% of shares), Italian Eni (20%), French EDF Group (15%) and the German Wintershall AG (15%). So Russia started construction of the ground infrastructure of new pipes on our territory — the main gas pipeline, gas-pumping compressor stations and Russkaya onshore terminal.\n\n\nHowever, already during the negotiation stage of the construction contract, the pipeline faced growing opposition from a number of influential EU officials and their US advisers, partners and patrons.\n\nThe USA and pro-American Europeans cited “growing danger of Europe’s dependence on gas supplies from unpredictable Russia” as the main reason for this opposition.\n\nThe real reason, which have long been pointed out by many European experts and politicians, is different. Under no circumstances do the USA want to give up the ability to control, at least indirectly, the energy relations between Europe and Russia. Which can be done only by firmly tying these relations to the transit of Russian gas through Ukraine, managed by Americans. The USA, appointing Ukraine to act as a sort of an unstable and troubled buffer zone between Russia and Europe, categorically rejected everything that undermined the monopoly of Ukraine in the transit of our gas to Europe.\n\nThe formal way to stop the South Stream was the introduction of new and increasingly sophisticated EU laws (directives) on “security of energy supply.” According to some directives, if a company supplies gas to Europe, then it cannot simultaneously own both this gas and means of delivery. That is, the gas pipelines or gas terminals.\n\nAccording to other directives, if a company owns the gas pipeline, it is obliged to pump gas from other suppliers (not less than half of the transit) freely through it.\n\nIt essentially meant that Gazprom was offered to build and maintain for Russian money gas infrastructure in Europe which would be used on a priority basis not by Russia, but by the interested European or other companies. From an economic point of view, it made South Stream meaningless.\n\nThe most cynical aspect of these European “gas directives” was that they were openly anti-market and simultaneously specifically anti-Gazprom.\n\nFirst, they grossly violated the fundamental principles of economic law — the inadmissibility of retrospective application of the law (their fulfillment was required in respect of the contracts signed by Gazprom BEFORE the adoption of the directives). Secondly, the implementation of these directives allowed exceptions for European companies. For example, they could own terminals for liquefied natural gas (LNG), which they supplied to the European market.\n\nThen negotiations with Azerbaijan about the possibility to at least partially revive the Nabucco project, that is, increase supplies of gas to Europe bypassing Russia from the south, intensified dramatically. Тew projects appeared: Trans-Anatolian Gas Pipeline (TANAP) from Baku (from the Shah Deniz gas field) through Georgia and Turkey to Greece and prolongation of the TANAP into Europe — Trans Adriatic Pipeline (TAP) from Greece through Albania and the Adriatic Sea to Italy.\n\n<center>[![](https://ipfs.pics/ipfs/QmWhZCKh2EZNcNFmVktWESBCdpahuWVmMVmdzECyh4LWWS)](https://ipfs.pics/ipfs/QmWhZCKh2EZNcNFmVktWESBCdpahuWVmMVmdzECyh4LWWS)\nShah Deniz gas field, the route of the South Caucasus Pipeline (SCP),\nthe Trans-Anatolian gas pipeline (TANAP) and the planned Trans Adriatic Pipeline (TAP),\nas well as Nabucco pipeline. CC 2.0 (click for better resolution)</center>\n\nOf course, Europe knew perfectly well that Azeri gas could not replace Russian South Stream. The design capacity of South Stream is 63 billion cubic meters of gas per year, while Shah Deniz will be able to give only 10 billion cubic meters a year through TANAP and TAP, with a long-term increase in supply due to the commissioning of other fields up to 20 billion cubic meters per year.\n\nHowever, TANAP and TAP were — unlike the South Stream — quickly agreed upon and approved by European officials. In addition, the European Commission again made an exception for TAP to the principle of “separation of assets”, mandatory under the terms of the third energy package directives. As a result, the developers of the Shah Deniz, the Azerbaijan state company SOCAR and British BP are allowed to simultaneously control not only TANAP (outside the territory of the EU), but also TAP, passing through the territories of EU members Greece and Italy.\n\nAt the same time, South Stream got stuck in persistent (and ever increasing) EU requirements to comply fully with the third energy package directives of the European Commission. Because, again, the USA has long set the stage for weakening economic and political ties between Europe and Russia. One of the mechanisms of such weakening of the bonds was to drive the Russian gas out of the European market and replace it with the gas from other sources.\n\nWhat kind of sources are we talking about?\n\nFirst of all, it is about Middle Eastern gas. Also, in the future, liquefied gas from the USA, the extraction of which at the time was already growing rapidly because of the commissioning of the new “shale” deposits.\n\nHowever, we will discuss the topic of the US shale gas in detail later. Now let us talk about the project “Middle Eastern Gas to Europe.”\n\n# Middle Eastern Gas Hub\n\nBy a twist of fate, Middle Eastern countries turned out to be the world’s “oil and gas El Dorado.” If we talk about gas, in particular, in the Persian Gulf there is a unique supergiant gas field with reserves of about 28 trillion cubic meters of gas, which equally belongs to Qatar (it calls its part “North Field”) and Iran (its part is called “South Pars”). Iran could export at least as much, but it has been under international sanctions for decades. In addition, Qatar, with the participation and support of Exxon Mobil and BP oil and gas companies, has built not only modern gas production infrastructure, but also powerful liquefaction terminals. Qatar also owns the world’s second largest (second to Japan) fleet of LNG tankers, providing the minimal cost of LNG shipping to consumers anywhere on the planet.\n\nIn 2013, Qatar produced about 420 billion cubic meters of gas and sold about 90 million tons of liquefied natural gas on global markets, 31% of its global export.\n\nQatar has long wanted to start large-scale deliveries of gas to the very capacious and solvent European market. However, so far sales of Qatari LNG in the EU are relatively low. It is because the Qatari LNG tankers to Europe have to bypass the Arabian Peninsula through the “not quite safe” Strait of Hormuz, the Arabian Sea and the Suez Canal. The other reason is that, currently, there is still a steady supply of relatively cheap Russian gas to Europe.\n\nIn the middle of the last decade, when Europe started to discuss the Nabucco gas pipeline from the Caspian Sea region to Turkey and further to Europe, Qatar very actively joined the discussion and immediately offered to send its gas to Nabucco. The estimated amount was up 70 billion cubic meters a year. It should be noted, that this Qatar’s idea, which meant driving Russian gas out of Europe, was immediately warmly supported by the United States.\n\nHowever, how could one pump Qatari gas to the Nabucco pipe line, Turkey and further to Europe?\n\nThe shortest path is to the North through Iran to Azerbaijan. The problem was that this route meant including Iran with its own huge gas reserves to the Nabucco scheme. Which was, first, unacceptable to the Sunni Arab “colleagues” of Qatar in the Cooperation Council for the Arab States of the Gulf (GC), which considered Shiite Iran a constant formidable competitor for leadership in the Islamic world. Secondly, it was unacceptable for the USA, which from the period of the Islamic revolution of 1979 have considered Iran their enemy and passed tough anti-Iranian economic sanctions through the UN Security Council resolutions.\n\nIn 2008, discussions began about the gas pipeline route from Qatar to Turkey through Iraq. However, Turkey opposed this, because the pipe had to pass through virtually autonomous Iraqi Kurdistan and the Kurdish areas of the Turkish Anatolia. Which meant serious political problems for Ankara. Because such a “pipe connection” could not help raising hopes of Iraqi, Iranian, Syrian and Turkish Kurds about the unified ׅ“Great Kurdistan.” However, even if Qatar were able to “force” such a pipeline, the political and military risks of the actual civil war in Iraq remained an insurmountable obstacle.\n\nThen the third route for the “Qatari pipeline” was proposed: along the coast of the Persian Gulf through the territory of Saudi Arabia, then through Jordan to Syria and after that, to Turkey. This option, which was actively discussed in 2009, suited the Saudis, as well as Jordan, and Turkey. All of them would get transit control and transit fees — the kind of advantages that is always nice to have.\n\nHowever, the Alawite (Shiite and Pro-Iranian) minority holding key positions in Syria and its leader, President Bashar al-Assad, had the most serious reasons to see a threat to the political security of the country and its territorial integrity in this initiative.\n\nToo obvious was the fact that for the USA, NATO, and Sunni States of the GCC, Syria was as much a military target as Iraq, and that, after wreaking havoc by their military actions in Iraq, they would soon begin to wreak it in a similar manner in Syria. And the “Qatari gas pipeline” might well contribute to such a turn of events.\n\nThis prediction was fully confirmed by the actual course of events.\n\nSince March 2011 in Syria the first “popular uprising” of another “orange revolution” began, and it was in those South-Eastern and Eastern Sunni provinces, through which the Qatari gas pipeline was supposed to pass (Daraa, Baniyas, Homs, Latakia, Aleppo, etc.). Al-Assad, who had good intelligence services, knew the actual “driving forces” behind these “popular uprisings.” He also understood that with such a turn of events he needed much stronger support of Iran and Shiite power in Iraq than before.\n\nAt the end of June 2011 the Memorandum of Understanding was signed in Iranian Bushehr, declaring the alternative project of a gas pipeline Iran — Iraq — Syria, with the prospect of it reaching the Mediterranean sea in Syria or Lebanon and further extension across the sea to Greece. The declared design capacity of this “pipe” amounted to 110 billion cubic meters of Iranian gas per year.\n\nThe Sunni countries led by Qatar and Saudi Arabia indignantly declared this project “the Shiite gas pipeline.” They claimed that the Bushehr Memorandum was a “hostile act.” Next – together with the USA and its NATO allies, they have dramatically increased support for the “Syrian opposition” with weapons, intelligence and mercenaries. The damage to facades, glass windows and roofs was registered.\n\n43 artillery shells were fired at the industrial zone in Yasinovataya area after midnight from Ukrainian army positions near Avdeevka.\n\nTwo houses on Karnavalnaya and Maksimilianovskaya streets in Petrovsky district of Donetsk were damaged by direct hits in the roofs. Another 5 houses were damaged in Kirovsky and Kuibyshevsky districts of the city. The territory of the nursing home for the elderly came under Ukrainian army shelling in Biriuzova village in Kirovsky district of Donetsk. Gas pipelines were damaged by shell shrapnel on Deputatskaya, Aleksinskaya and Avetsenny streets. There are no human casualties.\n\nStaromarievka and Novaya Marievka villages in Telmanovsky region were shelled by artillery and “Grad” multiple launch rocket system. A house in Novaya Marievka is destroyed by a direct hit. 20 152mm artillery shells were fired at both villages.\n\nDPR reconnaissance notes the work of recon drones of the enemy along all of the contact lines. These drones are used by Ukraine to spot the targets for artillery shelling of the Republic.\n\nAccording to updated information, Ukrainian punitive forces fired 698 shells at frontline territories of DPR on August 16, out of which 630 were artillery shells and rockets.
