But one of Envoy’s most exciting innovations is the potential for institutional trade finance experts or fund manager to spin up tokenised funds that would focus on a specific trade finance product or a mix of products.\n\nEnvoy makes this a possibility with the ENgage Gateway, which such funds could use to plug directly into Envoy and start trading on the platform. Creating such a security-tokenised fund (STF) would provide many benefits over more traditionally structured funds:\n\n*They are asset-backed, and so institutions are able to quickly raise capital through the sale of their security token.\n\n*The token itself can inherently track ownership, profit and net asset value (NAV).\n\n*A system can be created that automates dividend/incentive distribution.\n\n*The fund structure is more secure and precise, lowering administrative strains and costs.\n\nBy its very nature, an STF will be consistently reflective of the NAV. Records of these values are then immutable, time-stamped, traceable and highly secure due to the nature of the underlying blockchain the security token is built upon.\n\nThis level of accuracy allows for a simple calculation of monthly (just as easily, daily or hourly) NAV. It can be set up such that automatic non-periodic payments can be made to investors as a return of capital/dividend income based upon meeting incremental NAV benchmarks (high-water mark), or as an immediate percentage of profits from each completed contract. Further, the contributions and distributions can easily be tracked through the purchase or redemption of security tokens.\n\nOnce configured, the ENgage Gateway can act as an automated bridge. It will allow the third-party funds to exchange their security tokens or other deposited value for NVOY tokens and use that value as collateral (as a financier) for financing. The STF would then be able to engage with Envoy’s AI through the ENgage Gateway to find contracts and balance portfolio investments according to their specified investment strategy and risk profile.\n\nThe Gateway would be able to match these preferences against the various trade finance types available and take into account the ENsure risk ratings of the contracts within each product class. After the contracts are claimed and executed off-platform, the data from these transactions will be fed back to the Envoy platform and the ENgage Gateway will relay the profits earned back to the fund.\n\nOnce the first fund has been created, multiple funds, with varying portfolio strategies or risk profiles, can be quickly and easily copied, pasted and immediately plugged into Envoy’s ENgage Gateway to take advantage of different trade finance products. Try 5,000 years in ancient Mesopotamia. Babylonian clay tablets dating back to that time give us the very earliest known examples of promissory notes and letters of credit. Otherwise, our trade finance system has little in common with ancient Babylon.\n\nToday trade finance spans the globe, enabling trade around the world and spurring economic development in places where businesses would otherwise struggle to find an open door to the global system of finance and trade. The Babylonians may have traded with the Indus Valley and other civilizations as far away as Egypt and Anatolia, but their primitive concepts of trade certainly didn’t constitute the trading behemoth we see today.\n\nSo, what happened to trade finance over the years and where is the industry headed?\n\nWell, various forms of regional trade finance persisted in the ancient world, though it took a dive along with the rest of civilization after the fall of the Roman Empire. For over a thousand years there were no institutionalized or officially sanctioned trade finance practices, though we can assume it persisted on smaller scales between individuals in specific cases.\n\nFifteenth Century banks led the revival of basic trade finance practices by overseeing the exchange of promissory notes between trading parties. The cat was out of the bag and it was only a matter of time before a growing, increasingly complex system would evolve. Soon letters of credit were common, guaranteeing the payment of funds if and when trade terms were met by both parties.\n\nLetter of credit led in turn to greater volumes of trade. Merchants who previously lacked the capital needed to conduct a trade or were consistently limited by the risk involved suddenly had access to the financing they needed. In its basic form, this system has persisted into the modern day, exploding of course with globalization, bringing finance to areas of the world eager to join the global market.\n\nBut globalization has been a double-edged sword for trade finance. A truly global system of trade finance requires that financing be quick, but this traditional mode of trade finance is anything but. It’s slow, labor-intensive and it’s not transparent enough to effectively track where funds go and why. Trade finance also hasn’t kept up with the times technologically, and remain weighed down by papers and filing cabinets.\n\nEnvoy wants to hail in a new era for the ancient tradition of trade finance. But this underlying principle is the same no matter what you’re trying to accomplish: you have to speak the language.\n\nThis is particularly true of trade finance where even the most experienced professionals can get tripped up by the names of obscure practices.\n\n**1. Advance payment**\n\nThis isn’t ideal. Advance payments are payments to sellers before goods are shipped. This places all the financial risk squarely on the shoulders of the buyer, something that trade finance is supposed to help avoid. But not all trades can be financed. Instability in the buyer’s country is a common reason for advance payment and specialized products also require advance payments in some cases when selling them to a secondary buyer would be difficult in case of buyer default.\n\n**2. Blocked currency**\n\nAlso not ideal from an international trading perspective, blocked currencies are currencies that can’t be exchanged for any other currency, usually due to restrictions from the national government.\n\n**3. Demurrage**\n\nProbably one of the most hated terms on this list, demurrage is the name for the charges incurred when a shipment has to be stored in a warehouse during transit from the exporter to the importer. This often happens due to a dispute between parties to a letter of credit and can add up fast.\n\n**4. Incoterms rules**\n\nA set of standardized and internationally recognized trade terms established by the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC). They are routinely referenced in contracting and trade finance and are critical for resolving contractual disputes.\n\n**5. Retention/holdback**\n\nA contractual condition in which money is withheld until a specified time frame passes that ensures the products received are satisfactory.\n\n**6. Surety company**\n\nA financial entity, usually an insurance company that guarantees payment of a bond or the performance of an underlying contract in the event of a default or a failure of the contractor to do the job it was hired for.\n\n**7. Uniform Rules for Collections**\n\nThis is a set of rules published by the ICC to aid bankers, buyers, and sellers in the collections process. The URC has been prepared to resolve problems that practitioners have experienced in their everyday operations. Provisions of URC are not legal requirements but serve to establish a common understanding of the collections terminology and expectations.\n\nThis small list should help you understand trade finance and use the best tool in trade finance: Envoy. Whether you enjoy the benefits of globalism or have felt its adverse effects, it can’t be disputed that trade finance creates opportunity across the globe.\n\nSo, how does it work? Well, in its most simplified expression, trade finance is essentially a loan that bridges the financial gap between supplier and retailer while mitigating the risks they both face. Ok, wait — that’s still a bit complex to grasp if this is your first time approaching the subject. Let’s get simpler.\n\nLet’s say you’re a clothing retailer and you want to bring fancy foreign fashion brands into your store. These brands want to sell their clothing, naturally. But your store is small and relatively new. In order to mitigate the risk to their companies, they want you to pay for their clothing before it even ships out.\n\nBut what kind of situation would that leave you in? Without any protections in place, these bigger brands might stomp all over smaller stores, taking their money without sending the product, or sending one that’s sub-par in quality. You’ve paid for the clothes but they’re damaged in transit or lost at sea.\n\nRather than accepting all this risk on yourself, you get someone to finance the trade — a third party to pay the high-end fashion brand to ship their clothing to your store. In practice, this is like a loan to you that you get to pay off over time with the revenue you make from selling the clothes you just imported! It’s a simple, but very effective financial trick that goes a long way to create opportunity, especially for smaller companies that could be ruined by taking that kind of risk on themselves without support.\n\nBanks and other investment institutions are the main sources of trade finance funds. But regulations put in place in the wake of the financial crisis, terrorist attacks, and wars in certain parts of the world have started to limit access to trade access, with banks in some places refusing to take on the risk themselves or lacking the funds to do so. Less access to trade finance is particularly troublesome for developing countries but blocks financial growth everywhere in our interconnected world.\n\nBut have no fear — technology is here!
