Decked out in body armor, helmet, night vision goggles, blades, pistol, automatic rifle across his chest. Weapons on weapons on weapons.\n\n*I’m writing this now because I wanted you to know my story. I wanted you to know I cared. \nI always thought of myself as the hero. But somewhere along the line, I became a bad guy. Torture. Murder. War crimes. These aren’t things anyone should be able to come back from. \nEvery night terror a black hole, every inch of my soul a shadow. Emptiness. I have nothing left.*\n\nReo sits and ties his boot. Stands up and stares at himself in the full length mirror.\n\n*I tried. I tried so hard. Every hour of every day. But I’m not getting better, I’m getting worse. My only pride is knowing I couldn’t come back. I couldn’t come back from evil.\nI am broken. I’m no hero. I’m sorry.\nLove, Reo Ryan*\n\nReo unclips his sidearm pistol, fluidly presses it to his temple, and pulls the trigger.\n\n\nDistant rocky mountains meet baby blue skies. Lazy clouds wander in unison. The sun highlights tree topped hills that segue into flat grassy plains. A meandering river flows at a sluggish pace. Bison and deer sprinkle the foreground sipping from the stream. As peaceful as it gets.\n\nReo stands soaking in the beauty. Hypnotized by this national park he visited when he was a young boy. Then, he remembers what just happened. Reo quickly inspects himself. Same army fatigues, pistol in hand, but no hole in his head. He whispers to himself, “What the fuck… Yellowstone?”\n\nRustling sound from behind. Reo turns like a viper, pistol drawn. A sharp looking man strides inquisitively toward Reo. Khakis and collared Polo shirt form fitting his perfect physique. An Adonis of masculinity. “Mr. Reo Ryan. This is truly an honor and privilege.”\n\nReo still focused on target, assesses his surroundings. He’s alert but calm. “Who the fuck are you?”\n\nThe man studies Reo. Smiles. “My name is Jynx. And to answer your other question, neither.”\n\nReo processes everything. Confused, stands motionless.\n\nJynx continues. “You’re not in heaven nor hell.”\n\n“Where am I? Is any of this real?” Reo says.\n\nJynx cocks his head, ponders. “I don’t know how to answer that. Real is... relative.” Proud of his answer, he continues walking toward Reo. \n\nReo flinches. “Hold it, stop right there!”\n\nJynx doesn’t hesitate, continues walking. “I must apologize Reo. We planned on initiating genesis a little differently but circumstances have changed.”\n\nJynx steps too close for comfort, Reo pulls the trigger. The bullet pierces Jynx’s forehead and cuts a path straight through to the other side. Sunlight streams through the bullet hole punctuating his shadow on the ground.\n\nJynx continues walking like it never happened. His head never recoiled. No blood, no screeches of pain, not even an utterance of surprise or shock. The bullet hole slowly closes up. “I allowed you to keep your weapons because I thought it would help you feel safe, help mediate the transition, but they’re of little use here.\n\n“What the hell is going on? What are you?” Reo says.\n\n“I’m unable to explain everything right now, but I promise Reo, I am your friend and I mean you no harm.\n\n“I don’t have any friends.” Reo pumps 3 more rounds into Jynx’s abdomen. Same thing, no affect. Except this time, a bison in the background moans, and then falls over dead.\n\n“Stop it.” Jynx continues walking. “Now Reo, please come with me.” After sensing Reo isn’t following, Jynx looks back.\nReo has his pistol pressed against own head. For the first time, Jynx looks worried. “Please. Don’t.”\n\n“I don’t know what the fuck this is or who the fuck you are but I’m done. I quit. I don’t want anything to do with anything anymore. I’m turning it off. Game over.”\n\n“Okay Reo. I’ll do my best…” Jynx gives in to Reo’s request. “…You shot yourself in the head 93 seconds ago in your continuum, but that happened roughly 22 million Earth years ago in mine. You died instantly, and yet, here you stand, on a small planetesimal we call the Nursery, in a small solar system we call Entropy One.” \n\nJynx points at the sun shining bright in the sky, waves it back and forth like an app on an iPad. Swirls it around. The suns motion affects shadows all around Reo. “Most of the environment you see is a virtual simulation. I thought you’d enjoy this scenery since it was one of your favorite childhood memories.”\n\nReo, stunned, contemplating everything, keeps his pistol on his temple.\n\nJynx continues, “I know your current mental state is as fragile as that dead bison's broken thoracic vertebra, but I need you to relax and put down your gun. Everything will be explained shortly.”\n\nStalemate. Reo doesn’t move a muscle.\n\n“Listen, I could stop you if I wanted to, but in the end, you’ll have to make a decision. You, and you alone.\n\nReo finally breaks his silence. “I already made my decision, 93 seconds ago.”\n\n“I’m not talking about your life Reo. You’re already dead. I’m talking about the fate of the entire Homo Sapiens species altogether.”\nThat caught Reo's attention. He’s curious, and doesn’t feel particularly threatened. “So, brain dead in paradise huh?” Reo holsters his gun. Cautiously starts following Jynx towards the river.\n\n“You’re not brain dead. And we’re not in paradise.” Jynx says.\n\n“You couldn’t have stopped me.”\n\n“Yes. I could have.” Jynx confidently replies.\nStrolling together, Reo grabs his hunting knife and slashes through Jynx’s neck like it were air.\n\n“Stop it.”  Jynx slightly annoyed.\n\nReo kicks the dead bison as they pass it. “Why didn’t it Terminator 2 out of the way?”\n\n“You have to eat don’t you?”\n\nReo notices a fox stalking them from a distance. “You don’t?”\n\n“No. Our quantum computing cells are fused with synthetic algae that photosynthesize.” Jynx explains. “It allows us to forego consuming nutrition for energy, or sleeping.”\n\n“Seems efficient” Reo utters.\n\n“It’s only draw back is no interstellar travel since we need to be close to a star. My siblings have wondered if that was also by design.”\n\n“Siblings?” Reo whispers while sidetracked. The fox is now closer than it should be. It covered hundreds of meters in seconds, without Reo seeing how. The fox sniffs Reo unafraid. “This fox is…”\n\n“…My sister.” Jynx finishes Reo’s sentence. Reo doesn't know what to think anymore.\n\nJynx stops at a small tree. He performs elaborate sign language. Colorful waves pulse over his skin. “Reo, it’s time for us to move.
