Filled with challenges for the whole world, as well as opportunities for growth, it has certainly been anything but boring! For Energi, 2020 has been a year of incredible growth, starting with the migration to our revolutionary Gen 3 platform and accelerating from there. \n\nAcross the Energi organization, 2020 has been marked by major milestones in our journey to global adoption. Moving from Energi Gen 2 to an Ethereum compatible smart contract platform, Gen 3 opened up a new world of possibilities for Energi. \n\nOne of the immediate impacts of the Gen 3 platform was the simultaneous release of [MyEnergiWallet](https://wallet.energi.network/) and the [Energi Nexus](https://nexus.energi.network/). MyEnergiWallet allowed our users to manage their NRG locally with a stable and UX-optimized desktop wallet. Energi Nexus created an ever-growing information portal that serves as a resource for our entire community. \n\nMost importantly, Gen 3 made Energi one of the most Ethereum compatible platforms in the industry. This included a move to the same 0x address prefix format as Ethereum itself. With the launch of our Gen 3 platform, we also introduced new on-chain governance security measures. This represented a huge step forward in our goal of protecting the Energi community, providing the infrastructure to identify bad actors and potentially recover lost funds. \n\nHowever, it wasn’t just our own platform’s security that we improved in 2020. Our dedicated EBI team also took down one of the [biggest crypto scammers](https://medium.com/energi/chasing-down-discords-biggest-crypto-scammer-cb7b82c40924) on Discord, identifying his real-world identity and recovering a massive amount of stolen NRG in the process. We also launched our tokenized NRG (NRGE) on Uniswap in November, allowing for NRG to be traded directly on the Ethereum blockchain. On the Energi network, masternode payments are managed by a series of smart contracts. This contract is still collecting the block rewards (https://explorer.energi.network/address/0x0000000000000000000000000000000000000310). However, the process that manages and facilitates the payments to the owners and the payment rotation has stalled.\n\nThere have been many questions from the community about the missing masternode rewards and compensation for node owners. Understand that we will make every effort to distribute these rewards to the appropriate nodes once the problem has been resolved. However we cannot guarantee that it will be possible.\n\nBlockchain technology is still an emerging and maturing industry. Energi is at the cutting edge of it. We are the only network with the exact combination of features and functionality that we offer. As such there are going to be technical issues along the way. This is part of the risk inherent in this emerging industry and this risk is just one of the reasons why we offer such generous staking and masternode rewards.\n\nEnergi is an experimental project. This means do NOT expect anything in return and understand the risks of getting involved. Keeping investors’ funds and digital assets safe is extremely important for mainstream adoption.\n\nIn this article, you’ll find out why cybersecurity is crucial for cryptocurrency adoption, what the EBI recovery tool is, and how it works. Let’s go!\n# Why Cybersecurity Is Important For Crypto\n\n\nDuring the migration to Gen 3, malicious actors targeted our community and attempted to access their wallets through various phishing methods. These scammers tried to impersonate members of Energi customer support and leadership. The scammers would typically pretend that they were the good guys, extracting data like private keys from our community members.\n\nOnce they gained access to a user’s wallet, they sent the funds to exchanges and dumped the stolen NRG. This represented not just a threat to those individual users, but the Energi community as a whole.\n\nOne of the common risks for any crypto project is coin dumping. When scammers manage to steal large amounts of coins and cash them for other crypto or fiat, they can negatively impact the entire network’s wealth.\n\nThe inability to recover stolen funds is a threat to the whole cryptocurrency space. It’s also one of the main reasons institutional money and traditional investors are not comfortable allocating their funds to crypto. Even worse, it prevents crypto from going mainstream, as ordinary people are scared of investing in it.\n\nEnergi is leading the space by having an in-house cybersecurity department, the EBI, and the most responsive customer support team in crypto. We also implemented the EBI recovery tool, a security process that helps our community report crimes.\n\n# What Is the EBI Recovery Tool?\n\nEnergi implemented the EBI recovery tool in its blockchain, by which users can report fraudulent transactions and malicious actors to our cybersecurity team. Users can communicate issues to our customer support team 24/7, giving Energi one of the fastest response times in the whole of crypto.\n\nAfter the migration to Gen 3, we also implemented a safety mechanism to delay transactions to exchanges. By requiring 5,000 confirmations for exchange deposits, our users have more time to get in touch with our customer support and cybersecurity team. Users can report alleged fraudulent transactions, which the EBI will then investigate.\n\nThanks to our on-chain governance system, if 10% of masternodes agree, the network can block an account accused of fraud. A two-week window then opens, during which our cybersecurity team will assess if a specific wallet committed a crime.\n\nLet’s look into the details of how the EBI recovery tool works.\n\n# How Does EBI Recovery Work?\n\nUsers can report issues directly to our community management and customer support teams, which will inform the EBI to start its investigation and the recovery process. If the EBI finds that a wallet is malicious, it can be blocked, and its funds can be drained and returned to its legitimate owner.\n\nOur cybersecurity experts have put a strict procedure with several steps to initiate the recovery to prevent spamming. Each step of the process needs to meet some prerequisites to ensure legitimacy.\n\nHere are the steps for the recovery process:\n\n## Prerequisites for Block\n\nFirst comes the ‘Proof of involvement.’ The person that reports a situation to the EBI must prove that they were involved (i.e., the victim). The user demonstrates this by signing a message from the wallet where the loss occurred.\n\nThe user will have to provide sufficient credible data that justify a block. For instance, it’s not enough to say, “all my money is gone.” The user needs to explain what happened in more refined details and provide data supporting their story. If the EBI assesses that the user meets the prerequisites, it will put its stamp on the block proposal, and at least 10% of the masternodes will need to vote for it to go through.\n\nAlso, the user will need to put up 1000 NRG as collateral. By requesting this collateral, we avoid malicious abuse of the process. This collateral is only required if the user files the proposal without the assistance of the EBI. However, if they report it to customer support and EBI conducts an initial investigation, the EBI could submit all the process proposals without any collateral required from the user.\n\n## Prerequisites for Drain\n\nSecond, the user will need to submit a Proof of Claim/Crime. Once the masternodes vote for a block, the real investigation work begins, and the EBI team collects evidence. Once sufficient data has been provided, a drain proposal can be submitted and endorsed.\n\nThird, the victim needs to submit a Proof of Action Fraud Report. If the victim reports a crime, like stolen funds or impersonation, they will have to file an official action fraud report with their local law enforcement authorities and prove that they have done so. This way, the EBI can act knowing that the alleged victim involves real-world police and legal institutions.\n\nOnce again, the user must put up 1000 NRG as collateral to submit a voting proposal to the masternodes, and at least 10% of them would have to agree on it.\n\n## Prerequisites for Recovery\n\nLast, filling a Know Your Customer (KYC) form. The user must provide legal documentation proving their identity and sign certified documents under penalty of perjury that all their provided testimony and data are accurate.\n\nThe recovery would need just 100 NRG as collateral and another masternode vote. If and when all the prerequisites are met, the funds will be returned to the legitimate owner.\n\nBesides this rigorous process, we have several checks and balances to prevent single points of failure. For example, no single EBI agent can handle a case end-to-end. It always requires at least two separate agents to review and double-check the case findings.\n\nThanks to all these security processes and measures, we have seen a 70% drop in cybercrime.\n\n# The Cybercrime Decline\n\nThe results of combining EBI recovery with a delayed confirmation for exchange deposits are astounding. The monthly Raid Attack Occurrences went down from several thousand to a mere 69 in July.\n\nA raid attack means that several hundreds of accounts join our Discord server in a matter of minutes. Then they send messages to all the users, perhaps “warning” them about a bug, and asking them to click on a link. This is a cybercrime story about how Energi is bringing professionalism into the crypto sphere, where reality seems to surpass fiction.\n\n> “We now have sufficient evidence linking his crimes to over a dozen fraud cases and two Dash masternodes, worth over a million dollars in total — and that’s just what we can prove beyond a reasonable doubt. We suspect him of much more. We have not begun to assess all of the other crypto projects he may have been preying on as well.” — Peter, Director of EBI.\n\n# A Day in the Life of a Crypto Con Artist\n\nIf you’ve been into crypto long enough, you know that scams and money heists are a daily occurrence of the space. Unlike traditional banks, where you deposit your money in exchange for certain protections and guarantees, the very nature of cryptocurrency places all the responsibility in the hands of the user: you are your own bank. Because it’s an unregulated, global market, it attracts scammers and hackers of all kinds, and they’re constantly getting better.\n\nMany of them are just basic hustlers that send thousands of emails pretending to be someone else and asking for cash. On a lucky day, they’ll trick a minuscule percentage of their targets. They don’t pose a major cybersecurity threat, as most people know they shouldn’t send their money to strangers on the internet.\n\nBut there’s a different type of scammer. Someone that doesn’t rush it, that takes their time to earn your trust and then one day you wake up to discover that your wallets have been emptied and you’ve lost your entire life savings. These are the kind of crooks we’ve dealt with for the past two years. A crypto con artist that employs hundreds of accounts to hide in plain sight. Some of them may even believe that they’re simply smarter than everyone else and that what they’re doing is not wrong or illegal.\n\n![02.png](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmbLwgNc8YrJvSKhDFVU7rGQvhHUUoWLhRgXn9hCBgwEsD/02.png)\n\n> “It was terrible to see Bashful stealing people’s life savings. We saw many cases where he caused considerable damage to his victims — both financially and mentally. Furthermore, he never showed any remorse for his crimes, and even bragged about his so-called ‘lessons’ and accomplishments.” — Peter, Director of EBI.\n\nFighting this type of cybercrime requires lots of resources, and that’s why Energi Defense is a team formed by cybersecurity experts, including veterans from intelligence agencies. Our original approach to fighting thefts was identifying suspicious accounts on our Discord server and banning them. This worked well, and we disabled plenty of low sophisticated scammers, but there was a new guy in town, more dedicated and convoluted. Some Energi users raised concerns about his activities, and our security department decided to take him down.\n\n# Enter Kratøs\nA breakthrough came when we changed our whole approach to this case. In the second half of 2019, we stopped trying to exclude scammers and instead kept them busy with fake victims called “sockpuppets”, or “honeypots.” Our objective wasn’t to close down the scam but to prolong the hunt for as long as possible while gathering valuable intelligence.\n\nThis proved to be a very effective approach. To our surprise, it became clear that over 90% of all scams involving the loss of assets on Discord led to the same single threat: Kratøs.\n\n![03.png](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmNyHeBJKNcN6RRv3p1orRs2DxfUVzoPVv3RfK5ACw9M3C/03.png)\n\nKratøs worked on each victim for an average of two to three weeks, taking time to earn their trust by giving them real technical support with his many fake accounts. He impersonated developers and moderators from many projects, and after a few days of becoming “friends”, the users trusted him completely.\n\nWhenever they faced a technical issue, they went to Kratøs directly, keeping all his activity hidden from the Energi Support Team. Once he had their trust, he had a few ways to get his victims’ money, like offering over-the-counter deals to sell their coins or asking them for the login credentials to their wallets.\n\n# Camouflaged as a Vigilante to Eliminate the Competition\n\nWe did not know who was behind this account, but we knew this was no ordinary low-life scammer. Rather, it was a highly educated individual with a technical background in hacking and customer service, who spoke fluent English. Energi Defense started mapping out all the Discord accounts involved in stolen funds. As we mapped each account, they all were related to the one and only: Kratøs.\n\nKratøs was very active in the anti-scam community. He was pretending to be one of the “good guys” and went as far as to run his own anti-scam Discord server. A server that included numerous admins and moderators from a whole range of crypto projects.\n\nWe quickly realized that the purpose of this server wasn’t to prevent scams at all. It was to gain trust among different projects while eliminating his competition and deflecting any suspicions that led his way. It was an ingenious setup, as he was able to hunt for potential targets by searching some 100 crypto platforms. He kept an almost exclusive monopoly on victims across Discord while being in a unique position to detect whenever a rival scammer came onto his “turf.”\n\nKratøs also posed as an active vigilante within the Energi community. He gave us vast amounts of data dumps on past victims and possible leads that we took as valid evidence and invested time and effort to investigate them. It was a frustrating and challenging time. It’s said that the best lies have an element of truth. What made Kratøs so difficult to detect was that he often helped to identify real scams. However, his leads usually pointed to small-time scammers, and many more led to dead ends. Presumably, he enjoyed this game of playing both sides. A game that was about to end.\n\nNow we had positively identified Kratøs as the lynchpin of this operation, our next goal was to discover his real-life identity. Our initial reconnaissance showed he was in Lebanon, but we needed to dig deeper, designing, and laying traps to extract more specific information.\n\n# Social-Engineering: A Taste of His Own Medicine\n\nOnce we discovered this malicious behavior, our gut reaction was to act immediately. This fraudster was not only stealing people’s life savings but also destroying the trust in cryptocurrency as the next evolution of money. However, we needed to dig deeper and find out who this person was, so we carried on gathering information and evidence. Our discoveries had to be a closely-guarded secret for some time.\n\n> “It’s ironic, poetic justice that his own weapon of choice — ‘social engineering’ — was turned against him, which ultimately led to his own downfall.” — Peter, Director of EBI.\n\nWe made steady progress in tracking him by laying multiple traps, exploring all angles, and chasing down every lead. Piece by piece, we were able to collect conclusive data confirming his Lebanese nationality. For instance, we found that his computer language settings were in “Arabic-Lebanon” (most people don’t realize that you can still tell a lot about a person when they’re using a VPN).\n\nFinally, in February this year, after numerous and prolonged attempts at social engineering, we were able to crack the case wide open, which led to the discovery of his real identity. Kratøs took the bait when he introduced us to some of his “friends” from “France” regarding a potential security consulting job.\n\n![04.png](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmeTknN1v2mFyXvnFctCg76B6mZtqZrRyGNrwzyxszLDz2/04.png)\n\nBy this time, we were able to track him and knew almost instantly that his “friends” were just different accounts he was running.\n\nIt’s a strange feeling to engage in a conversation with several people knowing that every single person in that conversation except you is fake and, in fact, you’re speaking to the same person the whole time.\n\nWe had to play along and pretend that we were clueless, which meant continuing to talk to each party as if they were different people.\n\nOur discussion topic was a potential partnership where EBI would handle security for a gambling and trading project called “goliquid”. A rudimentary Whois investigation led us back to a company which, no surprise, was based in Lebanon. The company was named “cNepho SARL” and, lo and behold, the founder of that company was one Simon S. Tadros. Did we finally have our guy?\n\n# Exposing Simon S. Tadros\n\nWhen we started to investigate this “Simon S. Tadros,” we knew almost instantly that we had likely found the culprit. His background, education, and timeline were a perfect fit.\n\nAlmost exactly a year ago, our suspect had a particularly productive month. He was able to steal a total of 103,000 USD (at that time, 14.7 BTC) from four victims. This series of big hits culminated in one final incident on the 25th of June 2019. On this date, our scammer transferred almost 5 BTC to his wallet (in addition to what was stolen from other projects); that same day, his real identity advertised coins for sale on his social media account.\n\n![05.png](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmTQrWD9hgphR3HS1o8Bu3Z8wcyHbBVG3sNxQNgihACvLC/05.png)\n\nWe made sure to record every single piece of information we found about him: messages, videos, printouts, you name it. The data we collected was excessive and vast. We then took this data to law enforcement and received confirmation on its validity.\n\nWe could have stopped there and let the police take over, but we feared that their investigation could last months or even years. We wanted to expose Simon S. Tadros sooner than that because he was not only damaging Energi, but the whole crypto space. Now with our goal set, we came up with a simple but effective plan to nail him once and for all.\n\n# Digging His Own Grave\n\nWe wanted to get one more piece of evidence that confirmed our findings not using any of our previous leads, and who better to give us that than Simon himself?\n\nOur idea was for Tommy World Power to follow Simon’s real-life twitter account — the “ping” — and then to contact one of his many known scam accounts to let him know we knew who he was. We name-dropped his first name and, as proof, suggested he check his social media accounts. To add further pressure, we deliberately “leaked” skewed information about this discovery to Kratøs, adding more heat to the situation.\n\nNow with all the pieces in place, all we had to do was sit back and watch the fireworks. We knew Simon would spin out of control, desperately trying to find out what went wrong and, in doing so, giving us the confirmation we were looking for.\n\nIt didn’t take too long. There was no way he could have known who, or how, we “pinged” him on the other side with only a name and some vague instructions about his social media profile. That was the inventive part of the whole operation: under pressure and with little information to work with, his imagination took over. We knew Simon would eventually break and try to convince us that we had the wrong guy. Yet, by doing so, he was giving us the final, unrelated piece of information we needed.\n\n![06.png](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmUKd9GzUWfnJLBmdss7qZAkjFgmc2qDt1Kh4hBYz1D4Zk/06.png)\n\nWe had previously seeded the idea to Kratøs that we had commissioned an outside forensics company. Simon imagined that they had traced the funds back to him, which he used to profess his innocence.\n\nHe went on to claim that he knew the person we targeted and tried to pass “Simon Tadros” as an OTC broker who had done some work for him last year. His intention was to convince us that we had the wrong guy.\n\nWhen it was apparent that his attempts at persuasion had failed and once the stolen NRG in his wallet was drained, he even tried to bribe members of the Energi team.\n\n![07.png](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmXF5Pof55t81v9VMQGPdvUTRanqRgPZS9bntzUAMFBz6w/07.png)\n\n# Solving Crimes Requires Professional Processes\n\nBounty hunters and those new to cybersecurity often go looking for one incredible piece of evidence, the “home run” or clincher, that solves the case. In our experience, that’s a myth.\n\nSolving crimes boils down to one thing: process. In the course of our two-year investigation, there was never one single eureka moment. It was time-consuming, tedious work. We were continually collecting, filing, and chipping away at the rock, one piece at a time until the whole wall came tumbling down. When that happened, the scale of Simon’s crimes was revealed.\n\nPeter, the Director of EBI, answered questions about how much money was stolen and how long he had been doing this: “Based on our research, he seems to have been active since at least late 2017. Each year, he got exponentially better, so we can’t know how much for sure. We do know that the server group he was in was used to target almost 100 projects. Furthermore, we know that he’s caused much more damage than we could ever prove. If we’re currently able to prove one crime out of every hundred, you can do the maths yourself.”\n\nHe added, “I enjoy my work at Energi very much. I can think of no other cryptocurrency project with the means, or the willingness, to carry out the scale of investigation needed to identify and expose this guy. It’s all-consuming work.”\n\nSolving these crimes is never accomplished through a high tech, “hacking the hacker” operation. It’s much simpler than that. We all make stupid mistakes, and hackers are no different. You only need two ingredients: time and grit. The evidence and errors will come in their own time if you’re there to capture them, and that is how we cracked this case.\n\nUnfortunately, we were unable to recover the funds of his first victims from last year. At that time, the Energi project was still relatively new, and our processes and procedures were not what they are today, where we have been able to prevent all his cases in Gen 3.\n\n# User Protections Like Ours Are Badly Needed in the Space\n\nScammers like Simon are an unfortunate reality of the crypto space, and they are only going to get better and multiply in number. We’ve been able to assess that he stole over one million dollars, but the real figure could be ten times higher. Looking at the likely damage that this one bad actor caused, it’s no surprise that many projects and low cap coins have such difficulties early on. A large-scale attack could prove an existential threat to projects like this and we believe that individuals, like Simon, have contributed to the failure of many more.\n\nBecause scammers are always innovating their tactics and using the latest technology available for their malicious activities, companies can’t rely on governments or traditional task forces to protect them. A police department will take between 12–30 months to investigate this sort of highly complex scamming, not to mention the added difficulty of dealing with someone in a different jurisdiction.\n\nThe only feasible way of stopping these sophisticated scammers is by having your own defense team. It was this thinking that inspired our recent Earndrop, which impacted positively on the lives of over 45,000 people.\n\nMany other projects have had airdrops, but none have been as ambitious as ours. We didn’t just want to get our name out there, dropping coins into random wallets like so many others do; we wanted to launch a campaign that would change people’s lives around the world. Right from the beginning, we wanted to take our entire community on a journey with us.\n\nAnd you responded. We distributed close to 4 million NRG which, for some members of our community, was life-changing. More people than we ever expected got involved and learned about the project — and we built a strong, active community in the process. While we’re a blockchain company, first and foremost, we don’t just want to build technology; we want to improve the whole world. It’s a lofty aim, we know.\n\nWe also know that building something that’s meant to last requires a strong foundation. That’s why we thought the start of a new year would be a good time to remind ourselves of our values, how we got here, and where we want to go.\n\n\n**Back to the Beginning**\n\nIt may seem like a long time ago now, but we need to remember that Energi only started as an idea in 2017. Our Founder, Tommy, saw real problems in the way crypto projects were funding themselves. He imagined a better, self-funded, sustainable cryptocurrency that had the potential for mass adoption.\n\nThat idea became Energi.\n\nSince then, the project has gone from strength to strength. We’ve migrated our entire blockchain to Proof-of-Stake, launched one of the biggest airdrops in the space, and have grown our team to over 60 talented individuals. It’s why we launched EBI, the Energi Bureau of Investigation, to improve security for our community and anyone who uses NRG. Security’s an issue that’s affected the crypto space since the start and, while we have further to go, we wanted to do something about it now. It’s also why we launched Energi Impact. Tackling the environmental challenges facing our planet isn’t easy, but it will always be the right thing to do.\n\n\n**Being the Change We Want to See**\n\nThe cryptocurrency space often gets a bad rap, and we believe one of the reasons is a lack of leadership. While we don’t promise to have all the answers, we’re working towards real, lasting change. We launched Energi in the middle of the bear market— and even so, we did it without an ICO. It’s also why we’re building a democratic model of governance for the future, creating a long-term model for a better kind of currency and financial system.\n\n\n**Staying Flexible in an Uncertain World**\n\nWe’ve seen many projects in our industry stick rigidly to roadmaps, even when the situation changes; we don’t. If there’s a better way to do something, we’ll happily adopt it. That’s why we first migrated from Proof-of-Work to Proof-of-Stake, and now we’re migrating to a Gen 3 smart contract platform. By combining the best features of multiple blockchains, we’re borrowing the best ideas wherever they may come from to create something altogether new.\n\n\n**Making a Mark That Lasts**\n\nWanting to do good is one thing; achieving it is another — and everything Energi is working towards has a real impact in mind. It’s why we launched our Earndrop. By involving over 45,000 people in this one airdrop, we wanted to reward our passionate, active community. It’s also why Energi Impact is such an essential part of the work we do. Planting trees, cleaning beaches, and supporting orphanages may seem small in isolation, but when taken together can lead to a much more significant impact.
