| title | Hanging acoustic panels without damaging the wall |
| body | The last couple of years has seen me move my office/studio a few times. This means that the acoustic foam I use to tame reflections, also has to move. From the start I knew I didn't want to glue it to the wall as even though I own my own place; it is really destructive to pull. I don't mind re-painting, but fixing dry wall is not appealing. I started with painters tape and that didn't work. Next was hook and loop (not sponsored and I don't want to get sued) with an adhesive. It stuck to the wall, but it came off the foam after a couple of days. After that I settled on T-Pins and those worked quite well and ended up being my initial solution. In fact I'm still using that for the foam above my listening position. The draw back however, was that they leave holes in the wall bigger than push pins. With 2-4 per panel, this left a fair number of holes to patch. If you have lighter walls it might not be too bad, but I have a dark orange and the dry wall underneath definitely stood out. So when I moved back into the space I wanted something better. That ended up being a combination of things, but where the panel hits the wall it is simply 3M command hook tabs from the decorating hooks package. I didn't use the hooks, just the sticky stuff. This was made possible because I used adhesive on the back of the foam to attach yard sticks (cut down) from the big box store. Then the 3M command hooks stick to the yard stick. To remove I just pull the tabs and off they come. No holes or other damage! Moving to a new location is as simple as putting more tabs in the desired location and sticking them up. Note: After some time the small tabs I've used for the textured wall have given way. For textured walls, I would use something heftier like the hook and loop tabs. Same clean application, but more strength. Here is a [quick video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t6k24s8KgxY) of me going through the process with one hand. I wish I had discovered this earlier, but hopefully this helps out someone else. |

| title | Building my first panel |
| body | Since I have gotten more interested in woodworking, I have watched a ton of videos as I start to absorb the basics and terminology. In these a common step to creating larger projects without plywood is to create panels by gluing narrower stock together on edge. This also solved the other mystery of why woodworkers always have so many clamps (I've already realized that the number of clamps you need is always one more than you have!). I had a piece of 1x4 pine that gave me the perfect chance to try creating a panel that will hopefully make the top of a riser for my monitors at work. I started with cutting them down to size, arranged them in what I thought was the best alignment, and then did a dry clamp run. I'll have to admit for little amount of work I did, I was pretty thrilled. It actually looked like something I saw on YouTube! Now it was time to bring out the glue. It was too cold to glue in the garage so I did this in the basement and it was much messier than I would have thought. I did use painters tape for the scrap boards I used to try to keep things even while it dried. I waited overnight and removed the clamps. I need to do some clean up to get everything flat, but I'm very happy with how it turned out for a first time glue-up. I am looking to put what I believe are called breadboard ends on this next as I need a little bit more length and I want to attempt the joints to make it happen (a desk is on my build list). I'll have to admit though I would also like to do a complimentary wood but not sure what would go with the pine I'm using. So any suggestions would be appreciated. I think I use my router to make that happen. Keep learning! |

| title | Time for a trim...In a room |
| body | My wife and I have different tastes in styles for the house. She leans toward country. I lean toward modern. But one style we can both get behind seems to be craftsman or mission. There is a lot of variety in the general genre, but we find that we can find mutual appreciation in the cleaner lines, but subtle flourishes. The reason this matters is because our house is headed toward 18 years of use by 4 kids and 2 dogs. The time for refreshing has come (and gone) and we are starting with the downstairs rooms. We started with a fresh coat of paint and when we were looking at the trim we just were really unhappy. It is the plastic looking fake wood trim that is presumably cheaper when buying is bulk for housing developments, but we were ready for a change. So it was off to Home Depot for bulkier and squarer (is that a word?) baseboard. We hit it with a warm white and set about not only to change the baseboards, but to add trim around the window and closet that we hoped would help give it some character. I think it worked: This was kind of a cool project as not only was it necessary, I was able to start using some of the tips/tricks I’ve picked up for woodworking to make the process a bit easier. For instance, for the offset from the vertical pieces (stiles?) I used a simple template I cut out of a piece of scrap. This allowed me to quickly make an exact adjustment that was repeatable. In the past I would have measured each one each time and not had as good a result as what I got with the template. I still had a bit of trouble with the angles in this next one, but that might be more on my drywall skills than on the cutting. :) The good news is that this size baseboard will make my laminate floor skills appear better than they are. Lastly, I will say that a pneumatic nailer makes this entirely possible. The initial trim was done by me drilling a pilot hole, hammering in a finish nail, and then using a nail set to countersink. Needless to say, I didn’t use many nails. Regardless, we’re quite pleased with the results (though now there is a non-painted door) and it actually provides some motivation to keep going. The number of inputs and outputs is really what sold me. For a small home studio it really takes me to the next level and allows for a lot of future expansion at a great price. I have used it for several months now. I have recorded guitar, voice over, and voice for Discord. All have worked great for me. | body |

I’m starting to get more serious about building a workshop and from what I have seen, a table saw is central. However, when your workshop is also a garage, being able to move that saw around is key. In this video I document how I built a mobile base for my saw that used common materials and a simple design to get me started on a usable and expandable base for my workspace centerpiece. I’m definitely an amatuer so I am sure I’m not doing things as well or efficient as possible, but I found I have to do to learn and improve. So hopefully this shows that even if you are just starting out too, just create. That goes for the video too!
