      "body": "On the air of radio station “Echo Moscow”, Gennady Gudkov, the colonel of the Federal Security Service of Russia shared his ideas on how a state spies upon its citizens. Laboratory Kaspersky recently published a report about finding a large server grouping which might be connected with the National Security Agency of the USA. This grouping implemented software tracking tools on computer hard drives with the help of malware. Russian servers, including government ones, suffered from that attack. The report raised multiple discussions and led to the interview with Gennady Gudkov. We chose the most important statements and gave them below.\n\n– Talking about Russia, are special services concerned about an idea of spying on citizens?\n\n– First of all, we should not mix two aspects of surveillance. There is an external surveillance which is carried out mostly by great states having geopolitical interests, for example the USA, Russia, England, France, Germany, and China. And there is an internal surveillance aiming at national security interests.\n\nNowadays, NSA and other special security agencies control a vast amount of radio and other electromagnetic signals – they are gathered, copied and deciphered and it helps guarding peace. When we talk about the Kaspersky incident, I have already warned that it may happen. Moreover, in the past I and deputy Khinstein fought for passing an amendment which would prohibit using foreign software on our strategic points. Unfortunately, the import lobby won at that time, although the struggle was serious. Then we stated that only one program code given by “Microsoft” consists of 5 million commands. Only a couple of extra commands can lead to computer network failure. Even unintentional errors in software result in computers fritzing and having a computer hung is deadly for example in case of an air attack. We put aside the outer aspect – we warned about this danger multiple times but the government shows no reaction; rather, the interest of import lobbyists turned out to be more powerful, meaning that money prevails over common sense and national security.\n\nNow let us consider wiretapping citizens. In democratic countries collection of information is not punishable but its misuse can be penalized. Let us recall the USA where the Patriot Act was signed into law opening up a chaotic door of public wiretapping. By the way, it will be revised soon and I think such powers will not be prolonged. In Western countries there is a mechanism of restrictions and control, but in Russia, surveillance activity is completely unchecked. FSS, the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the Investigative Committee – they all have their own system of wiretapping and this process is monitored only intradepartmentally.\n\nAnd what happens? Wiretapped objects are mainly oppositionists, the state protects its power and not human rights. That is why in Moscow and other regions are founded special departments with the best operational staff; they are engaged in cases of members of the opposition and use everything that can be used.\n\nAll these illusions, like – Skype is protected, there are codes – all of it is bullshit. Technology develops so fast that all remarkable inventions exist in mode of secrecy for the first month, then special security agencies find ways of cracking and controlling.\n\n– What percentage of citizens are spied upon?\n\n5%, maybe even less, I think 1-2%, here are included: oppositionists, members of criminal groups and gangs. Not more than 20,000-40,000 people in Russia are spied upon. Because it is expensive. Despite the fact that nowadays most actions are fulfilled by a computer, human factor is also very important. Because information needs to be analyzed and then reported to superior. You should understand that current possibilities make possible tracing your life for the last 5-6 years – all correspondence and phone conversations are recorded automatically. But legal enforcement agencies must have some interest in you, at least if you have funds which can be marketed by the state. If you have nothing, if you are not a member of the opposition or a gang, you are free to sleep calmly – LEAs are not up to you.\n\nIf our state was legal and democratic, I would not mind being spied upon. We do not differ from the Western counties – surveillance works everywhere. But they do not have information leaks because it is punishable. Russians are absolutely unprotected because the government is assigned to certain groups of people and they protect not country or people or Motherland, but primarily themselves. And when they possess data on their political opponents or simply on unwanted people, it can be used anyhow. Your intimate relations, conflicts with friends, business information – can be used for blackmailing.",

      "body": "Although our current knowledge of the neuroscience behind the detection of fake from real is poor, we are slowly building up a better understanding of the brain and behavioural processes underpinning this ability. Over the years, together with my research group and collaborators, we have attempted to provide a better understanding of how our senses contribute to the perception of our world.\n\nIn the context of this exhibition, FAKE, interesting scientific questions arise. We wonder what senses contribute to our ability to discriminate real from fake, and whether some senses are more reliable than others. Or, to put it another way, do the sensory regions of our brains respond differently when something is real, i.e. physically true or objectively exists, compared to when something is fake? If so, how is this associated with our ability to perceive real from fake, and what are the limits of this ability?\n\nIf we think about detecting the difference between real and counterfeit banknotes, we might think that our senses play only a small role in discriminating between them, since such a task may rely more on attention and memory, i.e. our ability to notice and remember the appearance of bank notes (would you know without looking which architectural feature appears on a €10 note?)\n\nEven if we are highly familiar with the visual features associated with each banknote, research on the limits of visuo-spatial attention suggests that our ability to detect a real from counterfeit banknote may be hampered, even if both are placed directly in front of you. Indeed, forged banknotes are passed between unsuspecting people every day, causing problems for banks and police alike.\n\nOur research on multisensory processes suggests that perception is enhanced by combining information across the senses — therefore our ability to discriminate, detect and recognise the contents of our world benefits from having access to the look, feel and even sound of an object at any one time. This research hints at how perceptual science might be applied to the better design of high-value products, thus thwarting the skills of master counterfeiters.\n\nOur brain’s ability to rapidly judge what is real from what is fake is also fundamental to our successful interaction within our social world. Our sensory brain is so finely tuned to social information that it has a remarkable ability to perceive subtle changes, such as those between facial or vocal expressions. Yet fake expressions may be more difficult to discriminate from their genuine counterparts. A genuine smile, the so-called ‘Duchenne’ smile, is thought to be characterised by specific movements in facial muscles that are not stimulated during an insincere smile.\n\nHowever, as scientists, we have learned that our perception of the world cannot always be predicted from measurements of its physical properties — and visual illusions are a nice demonstration of that fact. Rather, perception results from a combination of factors, including the integrity of the underlying biology, the nature of the information itself, and our prior knowledge. In essence, our brain uses all of this information to make probability judgements about what is perceived.\n\nThis all leads to the ultimate question: what is FAKE? To be able to perceive real from fake assumes that our brain has a representation, or can estimate the likelihood, of what is real in the first place.\n\nIn this exhibition, members of my research group are testing that assumption by measuring the extent to which we perceive our own bodies as ‘real’ in space. We know, for example, that our actions rely on precise judgements of our body position in space, so that we can accurately reach or grasp an object. But how real is our representation of our body?       "body": "Grant West, a 26-year-old with the moniker ‘Courvoisier‘, who is known for his cyber-attacks on some big companies in Britain is in line for a possible jail sentence, after admitting to a succession of hacking offenses. Grant, and his girlfriend, Rachel Brookes, used phishing emails to carry out hacks on companies including Uber, Just Eat, Sainsbury, T-Mobile, Coral, Ladbrokes and many others.\n\nWest illegally obtained digital information as well as personal information including credit card details of over thousands of customers. He stole and sold the information on the dark web. He reportedly cost one of his victims, Just Eat, £210,000 in mitigation costs after he conned about 165,000 of its customers into giving out their personal details. This was after laying hands on their emails and then mastered an illegal feedback survey from the Just Eats’ app.\n\nHis fraud operation came to an end after Action Fraud issued a referral stating that Just Eats ‘customers had complained about a phishing email. These emails were disguised to be a survey which was going to give each customer a £10 voucher to spend on the website.\n\nHe was however arrested by the police in August last year when he was traveling first class on a train.\n\nA red laptop was retrieved from a shelf above him, together with £500,000 worth of bitcoin, along with £25,000 in cash, marking the first time criminal property in cryptocurrency was seized by the Met Police. The police later revealed that Grant had obtained private information of 78 million people and also over 60,000 credit and debit card credentials was found on an SD card.\n\n£25,000 worth of cannabis was again discovered by police after they raided his property. As if that wasn’t enough, West even tried selling cannabis on the dark web while he was on bail, waiting for his trial for his fraudulent actions against Just Eat.\n\nAccording to reports, West kept his earnings in Bitcoin, which he traveled globally with. He lived a very expensive lifestyle, including driving a £40,000 Audi A5 coupe and occasional gambling trips to Las Vegas.\n\nWest, a Kent native conducted his illegal dealings from a caravan park and made nearly 47,000 sales of stolen data and information on the dark web, according to a two-year investigation by the police. He also successfully hacked the websites of over 100 companies globally and once tried to infiltrate the systems of Truly Experiences Ltd, a move which was however unsuccessful.\n\nWest pleaded guilty to two counts of conspiracy to defraud, four charges linked to possession and supply of cannabis, one charge of computer hacking, one count of money laundering bitcoins and two counts of possessing criminal property. He is scheduled to be sentenced later this month.\n\nHis North Wales girlfriend Brookes, also pleaded guilty to unauthorized use of computer material, after confessing to using West’s personal computer in at least one of the cyber-attacks. She was set free on May 4th with a two-year community order coupled with curfew by the Southwark Crown Court.\n\nWest’s first run-in with the law came in May when he was arrested and later released on bail after the police failed to find or connect him to any illegal activity. He quickly returned to his old ways, committing cybercrimes until he was again arrested in September when his house was searched by the police, this time around, uncovering cannabis which incriminated him, and compelling him to admit to all his crimes.\n\nAdditional investigations revealed that West had shops on various dark web marketplaces as well as a known identity. Aside from his dealings in stolen computer credentials, credit, and debit card details, it emerged that he was also selling illegal drugs and mailed packages to his customers. He also laundered a very large quantity of Bitcoin from January to September 2017. It was also believed that West had targeted another 500 companies to hit before being arrested.\n\nHe had previously entered a not guilty plea for defrauding Just Eat in May, which led to prosecutors, bringing drug charges into the picture. He later pleaded guilty to all charges against him, related to fraud, money laundering, and drug possession.",

Sure, the world Martin created for the back-stabbing inhabitants of A Song of Ice and Fire is meticulous, but it’s not the tightly woven domain King has hinted at throughout some 50 novels. He’s spawned an intricate universe where characters reference events from his other books like they’re trading gossip about an old school friend and consequences that unfold from seemingly insignificant events ripple outward throughout his King-dom. (Get it?!) These winks to the reader make possible that knowing moment between author and audience, a moment King seems to revel in offering his die-hard fans.\n\nTwo examples can be found in the recently released Mr. Mercedes. Taking a step outside of its fictional universe, the novel marks its allegiance to the real world by referencing two of King’s film adaptations: “... that old Plymouth in the horror movie ...” (Christine) and “‘You ever see that TV movie about the clown in the sewer?’” (It). Cujo, The Dead Zone, The Body, The Dark Half, Needful Things, Bag of Bones and Lisey’s Story all originate here. Dreamcatcher and Insomnia are both situated in Derry, the second most-commonly referenced town borne from King’s imagination. This unsuspecting burgh also harboured one of his most notorious villains: Pennywise the Clown. The story of a group of kids in the ‘50s facing an ancient evil, It is undoubtedly one of King’s most revered works — and that hasn’t gone unnoticed by its author. It’s Bev and Richie reprise their roles in King’s recent novel 11/22/63.\n\nWhile the return of a pair of swingin’ youngsters was undoubtedly met with glee from King’s long-time fans (whom he calls his “constant reader”), there’s also another entity that continues to appear, an organisation shrouded in mystery which has lurked in the background for too long. The Shop has served as King’s go-to shady government sector. Plots develop from their interference in spooky matters. In The Tommyknockers (set in the fictional Haven, also home to The Colorado Kid), The Shop takes control of aliens. It is responsible for the Arrowhead Project, the monster-inciting incident from The Mist. Poor Charlie McGee’s experiments are conducted by The Shop in Firestarter. Dwarfs the others, did I say? I think there's more to it than that, actually. I am coming to understand that Roland's world (or worlds) actually contains all the others of my making.\n\nDark Tower, which follows the gunslinger Roland Deschain, has provided the biggest gathering of universal connections. Characters are tethered to its sprawling narrative and fly like kites. Their threads twist together in a design of such complexity you’ve got to wonder just how big King’s whiteboard really is. ‘Salem’s Lot’s priest Father Callahan, for example, plays a large role in Song of Susannah (book six of the Dark Tower series) and The Dark Tower (book seven), and in Wolves of the Calla (book five) he refers to many characters from ‘Salem’s Lot. The real town of Bridgton, Maine is the setting for Susannah and The Dark Tower, and also Cujo and Dreamcatcher. The extent and reach of the Dark Tower series across King’s work is staggering. His son, author Joe Hill, even hopped on the referential bandwagon with his novel NOS4A2. It includes a number of nods those with a keen eye will spot. First there’s a subtle wink to a mysterious Maine town called Derry. NOS4A2’s Charles Manx also makes mention to Shawshank Prison, made infamous in King’s novella Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption, and then compares himself to the True Knot, a collective of life-sucking nomads from Doctor Sleep. King repays the favour by name-dropping Manx in Doctor Sleep and kits out a character from Mr. Mercedes in a Judas Coyne T-shirt. Who’s that? The anti-hero of Hill’s Heart-Shaped Box.\n\nThe biggest and most obvious advantage to setting novels in the same universe is that everything already exists. In a pre-existing world, instead of starting from the ground up, King adds layers to what’s established. The towns of Derry and Castle Rock grow sturdy over time. Their connections thicken through the experiences of generations of King’s characters. It’s a testament to his writing that the names of people and places permeate and linger. When you come to pick up your next King book there’s a strong likelihood you’ll recognise the name of a bit character or an unusual event mentioned in an off-hand manner. This is why King’s fans keep returning to his books. The constant reader knows about the key under the mat. They’re encouraged to let themselves in the back door.
