      "body": "There are many areas of focus necessary to run a successful ICO or TGE [Token Generating Event].\nFirstly, you need to have a great, blockchain based idea.\nThen, you need great technology to bring your great idea to life. To take this to market, you need a compelling white paper - which sets out your vision and unpacks your business case. You'll also have a myriad of legal issues to solve - things like setting up a foundation, opening bank accounts, defining your KYC and much, much more. And on top of all that, the most important thing you need to do is find investors and contributors.\nThese are all the urgent tasks at hand, so it's no wonder that many ICO entrepreneurs forget another, more strategic and critical issue: managing the future liquidity of their token and building a hedging strategy for their cryptocurrency portfolio.\nLet's start by why what I mean by this, and why this is so important.\nIn running your ICO, you spread around many of your future tokens. You award them as success-based payment to your co-founders and team, and to many of your advisors (at least those that are prepared to accept them) such as lawyers, accountants and tax experts, token economy advisors, technology advisors, bounty, and so on.\nYou might have also included a \"lock-up\" clause for all these token holders, limiting their ability to sell your token in the first 3–6 months after your TGE.\nYou've probably managed to pre-list your token on one or two lesser known exchanges. So you've raised some serious money in your ICO. You've generated and floated tokens, and have listed them on an exchange. You're happy and starting to look to the future, doing calculations of your net worth, and your company's net worth given all the tokens you and your company are holding. But you have this nagging feeling that all is not well. And then you realise, that the end of the first lock-up period (3 months go by really really quickly) is approaching. And you know that some of your advisors and maybe even your colleagues are really keen on selling some of their tokens, really needing some US$ in their bank account.\nEven you yourself are tempted to try and sell off some of these tokens. And then you realise, maybe too late, that being listed on only one exchange is not going to handle all the volume of tokens waiting to be sold the day after the lock up period. And you start remembering all those stories you heard about tokens that lose 80–90% of their value the day after the lock up period ends. Then you start doing another, much more disturbing, set of calculations - how much of this money you thought you had and are going to end up losing.\nSo what happens on the day after the lock-up period? At least some, if not most, of your advisors will try to off-load their tokens. Because, in all likelihood, your platform - the one you built for the token you launched - isn't up and running yet, and if it is, it's probably at very low levels of transaction volume.\nSo there is no inherent need for all the coins your advisors are trying to sell. And because you aren't listed on a well-known exchange yet, there is no real interest from outside investors in your coin.\nSo as soon as one of these guys starts selling his tokens, the price of your coin drops dramatically. This is simple supply and demand - lots of supply, very little demand, means the price of your token tanks.\nThe more disturbing aspect of this is that while your advisors hold a relatively small portion of tokens, you and your company hold an immense amount of them.\nPut in perspective, the financial future of your company is primarily based on the value of the coins you are left holding, and this could be 5–10 times more the amount of money you raised in your ICO.\nSo some advisor - just one is enough - greedy for a quick liquidation of a small amount of tokens he received from you as a bonus, has wiped out a large chunk of the future value of your company. That's a strategic, asymmetrical threat to your business.\nWhat to do about this?\nFirst, understand these dynamics and design a hedging and liquidity strategy. Make sure you put aside enough of the ICO contributions you raised, keeping them as a buffer for future liquidity, and manage their value through effective hedging.\nSecondly, secure an agreement with a liquidity desk operator. These are companies and funds that manage your token liquidity desk, acting as an OTC provider of your coin, attempting to maintain the value of your token by capturing supply and managing demand for your coin.\nThink carefully how long your liquidity desk should be up and running, and see this as part of your exchange listing program.\nTie this liquidity desk program into your ICO, ensuring that as many investors and advisors will sell your token only through your official liquidity desk.\nThe writer is a blockchain economics expert, CEO of Silver Castle, a digital currency investment and advisory firm, linking traditional finance into the new world of cryptocurrencies.",
