Scares away some of the speculators and allows value investors to buy in at lower prices. \n\nBut never mind that! Let me tell you a short story of why this industry is so unappealing to some. A few weeks ago we decided to move some crypto-currencies from one paper wallet to another one.\n\nFor this you need to first import the private key into a wallet. But which one? You need to research both which wallets are safe(r), and to ensure the version you're installing is actually the valid one (and, of course, that you don't have malware on your computer). Otherwise you run the risk of someone stealing your key. After a few hours on this task, we safely imported the key and initiated the transfer to the new paper wallet. \"Wallet not compatible with Segwit addresses\". Spent the next hour remembering that each Segwit address has a correspondent legacy address and found a few services doing this conversion. Again go through the whole process of checking reviews, cross-referencing, trialing etc, to ensure the funds are properly transferred to their final destination. This whole process took only one day because we knew what questions to ask and where to look. And this is because in the past we asked the wrong questions, did mistakes, and learned from them.\n\nIf blockchain promises each individual to be their own bank, then each individual needs to learn bank-level security measures. Because transactions are quite lightweight, SMS, radio waves (including satellite), and other offline means are good enough for Bitcoin. Total tethers in circulation: over $1.6 BLN. When this bursts (either exposed as a fraud or shut down by the government), expect a serious price correction for crypto-assets.\n\nAs the Lightning Network (more on this in future letters) is picking up steam, Blockstream just launched Lightning Charge, a micropayments processing system.\n\n1.000.000 Ledger Nano S hardware wallets sold so far. Millions more own Trezor. More and more people caring about the security of their crypto.\n\nBitconnect scam went down. Will it be a lesson not to invest in obvious scams? Bitcoin crashed to levels unseen… since December. 2017 had five 30% corrections. So this is (still) normal. \n\nWe didn’t really watch the prices, but what’s worth remembering is that bitcoin is becoming less and less volatile. When other crypto-assets were dropping (and then bouncing back) by 40–60%, bitcoin was in the 20–30% range. This is really good news! Besides network security and liquidity, price stability is the other important factor in bitcoin’s institutional adoption (by funds etc). These sort of crashes are also good at showing which crypto-currencies are mostly held by long-term investors and which are held by short-term speculators.\n\nPredictions are difficult, but we’d venture and say that in 2018:\n\nblockchain as a industry will continue to grow,\ncrypto- will establish itself as an new asset class\nmore money coming in from individuals and institutional\noverall returns will decrease, less speculation\nmore regulation (especially for exchanges)\nrise of decentralised exchanges\nmore miners moving out of China\nmore hacking causing major losses\nless illegal ICOs (some people will go to jail)\nlegal security tokens (great opportunity!)\nmicropayments feasible on several top currencies\nand yes, Bitcoin price will keep going up! :)\n\nWe are in crypto to learn how this technology will change lives and economies.
