Let not God's people render evil for evil, but wait God's time. It is the worm Jacob; so little, so weak, so despised and trampled on by everybody. God's people are as worms, in humble thoughts of themselves, and in their enemies' haughty thoughts of them; worms, but not vipers, not of the serpent's seed. Every part of God's word is calculated to humble man's pride, and to make him appear little in his own eyes. The Lord will help them, for he is their Redeemer. The Lord will make Jacob to become a threshing instrument. God will make him fit for use, new, and having sharp spikes. This has fulfilment in the triumphs of the gospel of Christ, and of all faithful followers of Christ, over the power of darkness. God has provided comforts to supply all their wants, and to answer all their prayers. Our way to heaven lies through the wilderness of this world. The soul of man is in want, and seeks for satisfaction; but becomes weary of seeking that in the world, which is not to be had in it. Yet they shall have a constant supply, where one would least expect it. I will open rivers of grace, rivers of living water, which Christ spake of the Spirit, Joh 7:38,39. When God sets up his church in the Gentile wilderness, there shall be a great change, as if thorns and briers were turned into cedars, and fir-trees, and myrtles. These blessings are kept for the poor in spirit, who long for Divine enlightening, pardon, and holiness. This prayer is a prediction that Christ would be preserved, through all the hardships and difficulties of his humiliation, to the glories and joys of his exalted state, and is a pattern to Christians to commit the keeping of their souls to God, trusting him to preserve them to his heavenly kingdom. Those are our worst enemies, that are enemies to our souls. They are God's sword, which cannot move without him, and which he will sheathe when he has done his work with it. They are his hand, by which he chastises his people. There is no fleeing from God's hand, but by fleeing to it. It is very comfortable, when we are in fear of the power of man, to see it dependent upon, and in subjection to the power of God. Most men look on the things of this world as the best things; and they look no further, nor show any care to provide for another life.       "body": "**Isaiah 1:17**\n…16 Wash and cleanse yourselves. Remove your evil deeds from My sight. Stop doing evil! **17 Learn to do right, seek justice, correct oppressor, defend the fatherless. Plead for the widow.”**18“Come now, let us reason together,” says the LORD. “Though your sins are like scarlet, they will be as white as snow; though they are as red as crimson, they will become like wool.…\n\nI picked up my Bible this morning to read awhile. I wasn't looking for anything in particular; I just wanted to read. Isaiah was on my mind so I decided to start there. Isaiah is one of the big three: Isaiah, Jeremiah, and Ezekiel. Anyway, I began reading the first chapter. The first thing that stood out to me was \"Learn to do well\" in verse seventeen.\n\"Learn to do well\" sounds like a command. But as I thought about it I realized there was something much more that God was saying. I had written on this chapter before, so I was well acquainted with it. The things God was saying through Isaiah to His people were very sobering. In verse two He said they had rebelled against Him. In verse three they didn't even measure up to the ox and ass. The ox knows his owner, and the ass his master's crib: but Israel does not know, My people do not consider. I remember a similar illustration back when I lived in Texas. Across the road from my house was a large pasture. The owner, Jake, lived some miles away, but every day I could hear him coming down our lane in his pickup truck to feed those cattle. The cattle could hear him, too. Before he got there the cattle started lowing and moving to their feeding place. Just like the ox and the ass they knew their owner and the master's crib. But the Lord said, \"My people do not know as much as the ox and ass.\" It is not much different today. Many Christians do not know their owner or the place where they should be fed.\nIn verse four He calls them a sinful nation that has forsaken the Lord. Then in verse ten He likens them to Sodom and Gomorrah. But in verses 12-15 Israel is still very religious. They are appearing at the court of the Lord, keeping the sabbaths, new moons, and feast days. To the average eye they would probably appear very well indeed. But the Lord sees right through their religiosity to their real heart. And when you spread forth your hands, I will hide Mine eyes from you: yea, when you make many prayers, I will not hear. Verse 15.\nBut with all their sinfulness God is not ready to give up on them. Wash you, make you clean; put away the evil of your doings from before Mine eyes; cease to do evil; learn to do well; seek judgment, relieve the oppressed, judge the fatherless, plead for the widow. Verse 16-17. These are not commands as you might suppose. Actually, they are teachings. Have you ever had trouble making the Word work for you?
