Although we had initially been attracted to this region thanks to my friend SJ of Chasing the Donkey who lives here, we found a lovely little city with many opportunities for fabulous day trips so we could see more of Croatia.\n\nAnd wow, we saw some amazing sites. This slice of Croatia is stunning!\n\nWalk around the Old Town\n\n\nMy favourite way to explore a destination is to always just take a walk and soak it all in. Zadar's Old Town is very pedestrian friendly and there is plenty to see as you walk around as well as many bars, cafes and restaurants to take a break.\n\nThe best place to start is at the impressive Land Gate, built in 1543. There are also some old Roman ruins, The Forum, of the former main square and medieval churches to explore.\n\nSee out of this world scenery at Pag\nhttp://luvs.monether.com/showmeyourimg/kle57br304mas32nf/vilikodasut.jpg\n[source](wheressharon.com)\n\nI had actually never heard of Pag Island until SJ suggested we visit there. I still didn't know what to expect and was quite shocked when we pulled up to the bridge to the island. Above is what we saw!\n\nIt has scenery like nowhere else we have seen - its rocky and the contrast to the blue, blue sea and the sky was just absolutely stunning. It looked other worldly. In fact, it strangely reminded me of a tour I did high up in the Bolivian Andes. I would never have expected to see something similar on the coast of Croatia.\n\nVisit a stunning National Park\nhttp://luvs.monether.com/showmeyourimg/kle57br304mas32nf/wipolaxuber.jpg\n[source](wheressharon.com)\n\n\n\nThere are some amazing national parks which can be visited on a day trip from Zadar. The most famous of which is Plitvice National Park.\n\nThis national park looks and sounds amazing and I think it is a must visit for anyone visiting this area. However, as we are travelling with a three year old who basically refuses to walk and this national park isn't pram friendly. We had to skip it. I hope you don't have to though!",

Mainly because there are direct flights from Melbourne and I had exhausted most options where this is the case! This isn't to say Townsville isn't worth visiting. Not at all. Townsville is a lovely city. The first thing we noticed about it was how beautiful it looked and how different to Cairns - where we had just come from. It was far more desolate with big rocky mountains and far less vegetation.\n\nCastle Hill\nhttp://lhnhnw.separame.com/showmeyourimg/terbas87kolew2/bolerfas.jpg\n\nThe top of our list of Townsville things to do and see is definitely Castle Hill. This hill is only 286 metres tall but it is the tallest thing around and located very centrally in Townsville.\n\nIt's visible from basically anywhere and has magnificent views of Townsville from all sides. This includes the water, Magnetic Island and inland Australia.\n\nThe Strand\nhttp://lhnhnw.separame.com/showmeyourimg/terbas87kolew2/cedimlo.jpg\n\nEnjoying the Strand is one of the fun things to do in Townsville. It's a waterfront area with walkways, beach, pool, water playground, parks, jetty and cafes. There's also a regular night market. It's the perfect place from which to enjoy Townsville.\n\nAt one end is Jezzine Barracks (more below) and Rockpool. Rockpool is a big pool area perfect for swimming and splashing around - the perfect thing to do if you are looking for free activities in Townsville. There is also a cafe here.I was surprised to find that the beach along the Strand looks quite nice. It's not a good idea to swim here but you could sunbathe or have a picnic.\n\nReef HQ\nhttp://lhnhnw.separame.com/showmeyourimg/terbas87kolew2/dacukro.jpg\n\nReef HQ is the world's largest living reef aquarium and worth adding to your stuff to do in Townsville list if you are interested in learning more about the Great Barrier Reef.\n\nThere are many different fish and coral on display as well as turtles and baby crocodiles. There's a fair bit of information as well as live talks and a long tunnel. The site is only small - we were done in less than half an hour but we were not there at the right time to hear a talk and our kids get bored easily. If you are interested in learning more about the Great Barrier Reef or you are not going to make it on a trip out to see it then it is one of the recommended places to go in Townsville.\n\n\nhttp://s9.picofile.com/file/8311705734/145.jpg",

I really didn't know much about Mauritius before we bought flights there. It was cheap on Air Asia, I hadn't been and the word itself seemed magical. Otherwise I had no idea what to expect.\n\nThen I went. It's beautiful, the people are lovely and there are so many more places to visit in Mauritius than just the beach.\n\nEven better still is that it's modern and easy to visit. This is a slice of tropical Africa that's super simple with English spoken everywhere, good roads and is, quite simply, paradise.\n\nPort Louis\n\n\nPort Louis is the capital of Mauritius. It's a small city, as far as capitals go, but there are enough Port Louis Mauritius attractions that it's worth spending a half day here wandering around.\n\nMost of the Mauritius tourism places to visit in this city are a short walk from one another so I recommend catching a public bus or driving and parking at Le Caudan Waterfront and then exploring on foot. Below, are the tourist attractions in Mauritius that we visited in this city.\n\nLe Caudan Waterfront\nhttp://lhnhnw.separame.com/showmeyourimg/grun19jera24/cedimug.jpg\n\nOne of the best places to see in Mauritius if you want to eat, hang out and learn about the local history is Le Caudan Waterfront.\n\nThis area, right in the middle of Port Louis, consists of nice shopping centres, restaurants, a casino and the Blue Penny Museum (more below). It's a nice place to eat a leisurely lunch while people watching and soaking up the atmosphere.\n\nBlue Penny Museum\nhttp://lhnhnw.separame.com/showmeyourimg/grun19jera24/dasrunok.jpg\n\nThe Blue Penny Museum is primarily dedicated to two of the rarest stamps in the world, the Mauritian one-penny and two-pence stamps of 1847. It is home to the heavenly Sosua Beach.\n\nIt is one of many towns that I considered when deciding where our main base would be in the DR. Sosua lost out primarily because of my guide book. It described a place with a full on sex industry and full of hustlers. This was not what we found, and I am a bit annoyed at said guide book now. There was no evidence of the sex industry, at least in the day time, and if the person writing it thought there were a lot of annoying people selling stuff, they should travel some more!! I love Sosua Beach, and we visited here a few times.\n\nSosua town\nhttp://lhnhnw.separame.com/showmeyourimg/fedvaso49jasik/bomhas.jpg\n\nThe first time we went to Sosua, we were confused and accidentally went the wrong way when we were trying to find the beach. We ended up spending half an hour walking around the non touristy part of Sosua.\n\nThis was mostly frustrating at the time as we didn't know where we were and wanted to get to the beach already. However, it was also interesting and nice to see a different side of Dominican life. It was reasonably charming, but semi run down. There were lots of little shops and people outside socialising. It is worth a wander if you are in this area.\n\nSosua Beach\nhttp://lhnhnw.separame.com/showmeyourimg/fedvaso49jasik/cerima.jpg\n\nSosua Beach is just gorgeous. Lovely crystal blue water lapping against the beautiful sand. It really is exactly how you might imagine a Caribbean paradise. We loved making sand castles and splashing in the ocean.\n\nThere are lots of lounge chairs and umbrellas you can hire. Part of why we loved this beach was the massive trees on the shoreline, so there was lots of shade. It is heavenly.\n\nAnother reason I enjoyed Sosua Beach, was the shady beach path lining the beach. It reminded me of the one on Boracay, the Philippines, but it is nowhere near developed. It was lined with shack like shops, restaurants and bars. So much tempting food and cocktails. Tables were set up on the edge of the beach, and there was a lot to love about this area.\n\nhttp://lhnhnw.separame.com/showmeyourimg/fedvaso49jasik/dasnuka.jpg\n\nWe had lunch and, while we waited for the food, it was easy to keep the kids entertained. Just perfect for a family! S made a new friend who was the son of the chef.\n\nDespite being one of the main tourist destinations in this part of the Dominican Republic, there were not that many people around. It was not that developed. There was the occasional person asking us if we wanted a massage, or lunch, etc, but it was nowhere near as bad as the guide book made it sound. A no was usually enough to get rid of them immediately.\n\nThere are also well maintained toilet and shower blocks scattered along the beach path. I was impressed!",

For once, this isn't the case - I'm excited at the novelty of the flexibility in my future. I've got nothing officially scheduled past March. This is great!\n\nEven with the travel plans that I do have in my pipeline, they're different from the past. My income became much more passive in 2014, and because of this, I now have greater freedom to travel in the way that I want to.\n\nSo many of my plans for this year came about from hanging out with blogger buds, throwing out ideas, and saying, “Are you serious? I'm serious. Are you serious?! I'm still serious!”\n\n###Get Off the Beaten Path More\n\nhttp://hcbq.uncouver.com/look/kolbre48gfewi17ca/bedunma.jpg\n\nMy travel has become pretty mainstream. There's nothing wrong with that - you, as readers, want to read about about popular destinations more than anywhere else. There's a reason why my posts on London and New York always go crazy. Conversely, my posts about more obscure places rarely do well unless something exceptional happened there.\n\nBut I was putting together a list of my favorite off-the-beaten-path spots - like the Faroe Islands, Shetland, and Macedonia - and realized that it's been a year and a half since I've been to anywhere remotely off the beaten path (excluding Brunei, where I had a great time but I don't consider to be an inspiring travel destination). This year? I'm going to go beyond, whether it means visiting seldom-visited-and-blogged-about destinations or visiting less-popular parts of popular destinations.\n\n###Recapture My Adventurous Spirit\n\nhttp://hcbq.uncouver.com/look/kolbre48gfewi17ca/cefedlpo.jpg\n\nI used to be game for anything and possibly a little too adventurous (jumping into a boxing ring in Thailand is still the worst thing I ever did), but things have really mellowed out in recent years. But I know the reasons behind my mellowing, and this year they will not be factors.\n\nI want to zip-line and volcano board and whitewater raft. I want to hike and push myself. I want to camp and hitchhike. I want to travel to weird places. I want to say yes to crazy things again.       "body": "http://vjusi.studiency.com/jazz/grediks91mujors4/bikmde.jpg\n\nI spent two weeks in the country in total, the first week on a road trip from Pula to Split, and I was blown away - first by how madly I fell in love with Croatia, and second, by how it had been the easiest road trip of my life.\n\nIt's incredible - Croatia could not be more perfect for a road trip. But while I want to sing this from rooftops, the truth is that nobody has a clue about it.\n\nCroatia is a dream destination for lots of my friends back home in America - so much that each of them might as well have Croatia Pinterest boards for all the dreamy photos of Adriatic coastline that they post!\n\n###Comes time to actually book a trip to Europe, they don't choose Croatia.\n\nhttp://vjusi.studiency.com/jazz/grediks91mujors4/bunmol.jpg\n\nThey go to more popular countries for Americans to visit like Italy and France, Ireland and the UK, Spain and Germany and Iceland and the Netherlands.For the few who do decide to visit Croatia, they usually take a fully organized tour. People think of an Eastern European country at war, when in reality Croatia is much more similar to Western Europe than Eastern Europe, is a member of the EU, and there hasn't been a war for nearly 20 years. The country is incredibly safe, English is widely spoken, and it's outfitted for all kinds of travelers, from adventurous backpackers to sun-seekers who don't plan on leaving their resort.\n\n###The Ease of Traveling in Croatia\n\nhttp://vjusi.studiency.com/jazz/grediks91mujors4/cabnwwes.jpg\n\nEven if this is your first time traveling in Europe, Croatia is an easy country to start with. Some of those reasons:\n\nEnglish is widely spoken. You will definitely have an easier time speaking English in Croatia than in Spain, France, or Italy!\n\nIt's easy to get around. I recommend renting a car, but if you decide to go via public transportation, buses go everywhere; there are also some train lines. In Dalmatia you'll find ferries as well.\n\nThe tourism infrastructure is excellent. You've got everything from fancy resorts to dirt-cheap hostels, boutique hotels, and a plethora of vacation rentals. The roads are in excellent condition, the signs are clear, and the driving is, well, normal and considerate for the most part - not the scary driving that you typically associate with the Mediterranean.\n\nAdditionally, the scenery is so beautiful that it begs you to stop and take photos along the way. (The photo above was taken on a random bridge in the middle of nowhere!) And the rest stops are so nice - they put American rest stops to shame with their delicious, healthy food.
