Just as in the world of traditional finance, those who harbour ill intent tend to find ways to break through defenses.\n\nThis means that some of the biggest cryptocurrency exchanges in the world like Coinbase, Binance and Kraken have to spend millions of dollars every year on defending their platforms from hackers. Just like the world’s biggest banks who employ thousands of people to defend them every day, crypto is increasingly having to build its own strong defenses against theft.\n\nThe DeFi safety challenge  \n\nWhile Binance and Coinbase have the money and manpower to do this, achieving the same level of security in Decentralized Finance (DeFi) can be harder. As a market within a market, this subsector of the crypto universe now manages over $100 billion of assets thanks to the attraction of its many features for savers and investors. \n\nThe advent of DeFi has brought banking onto the blockchain, with the many platforms and protocols within it allowing users to perform any number of financial transactions - from depositing crypto in return for an Annual Percentage Yield (APY) to borrowing, lending and so much more. \n\nBy its very nature, though, DeFi is not without risk. The fact that large parts of the ecosystem run purely on automated smart contracts and do not require users to supply any personal information at all to interact with them is a plus for accessibility and speed. However, it is often a minus for keeping people safe. \n\nAs we have seen only this week with the $621 million hack at Poly Network, even the smallest oversight in the construction of a smart contract in Defi could leave a platform vulnerable to accomplished hackers - and not all are kind enough to partially return the funds as Poly’s hacker did! This means that security of systems has to be a top priority for all operators in the DeFi space.\n\nBridging the divide to create safety  \n\nAt YIELD App, we bridge the divide between centralized platforms like Binance and Coinbase and the totally permissionless world of DeFi. Unlike loyalty points, tokens are valued in real-time and can be exchanged and transferred between users. Brands can reward their clients, like with points. Users can redeem tokens for discounts, products, and services. They can also exchange them for cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin or Ethereum. Brands can use their tokens to acquire new customers or reward loyal clients for purchases, engagement in social media, participation in events or sharing their personal data.\n\n\nHow brands can use their tokens: Build a successful brand token campaign keeping an equilibrium. Build a successful brand token campaign keeping an equilibrium between supply and demand.\n\nThere are three main rules we need to take into consideration while implementing a system of token distribution:\n\n(1) Supply = demand\n\nBrand tokens should generally be distributed in quantities that meet the market’s demand — and the other way around. Brands should avoid giving too many tokens away and offering unattractive services or rewards in exchange since that usually causes a decrease in demand. In case of a drop in the market value, a marketing value of the token goes down accordingly. Therefore the demand for one’s tokens should ideally slightly exceed the supply, which will result in a stable rise of the token’s market value. It’s safe to assume at the beginning, to give away as little tokens as possible.\n\n(2) Determining the goal\n\nMost of the companies aim mainly at a rise in sales, meaning their goal is a rise in profit. Therefore while defining channels of token distribution brands should focus mostly on the ones with the highest conversion rates. For example, if a brand’s most effective channel of customer acquisition is Facebook Ads, it’s worth considering increasing its performance even more through token-related actions (ex. ‘Sign up and get 100 tokens now’). For other companies, the goal can be to retain customer attention, so Netflix, for example, could use tokens as a reward for each hour spent watching movies.\n\n(3) Value for value — nothing is free\n\nBrands should definitely avoid giving tokens away and not getting anything in exchange. ‘Free’ tokens are usually perceived as worthless. The greater the effort made to obtain the token, the more valuable it seems to a user. That doesn’t mean they should be too difficult to get, though — quite the opposite, actually. A lot of small, easy-to-do tasks can be demanded from users in exchange for tokens, like sharing their personal data or sharing the content of the brand.
