bodyThis is steevc. During the hostile takeover I criticised the new management and they were able to censor my account on the Steemit site as they control it. That's part of the reason I don't use it any more. A few people take most of the rewards. I am amazed that the price hasn't crashed, but I don't fully understand how that all works. I sold all my $STEEM to buy more $HIVE.

titleThe complexity is the attraction - reflections on trying to use crypto
body<p>A few weeks ago, someone wanted to send me some crypto. After spending <a href="https://shkspr.mobi/blog/tag/certified-blockchain-professional/">months studying for a Blockchain exam</a>, I usually avoid such things. But, hey, $20 is $20.</p> <p>So I signed up for a wallet, installed an extension, verified my credentials, saved a seed phrase, and - without too much technical fuss - had some crypto transferred to my account.</p> <p>So far, so good. Compared to a traditional financial institution it had some advantages - there were no KYC checks or ID verification requirements. But the disadvantages were obvious - I had to install a different app on my phone and link it to my computer. The UI for the app and extension were awful. titleHow to avoid JPG compression on Twitter
bodyLet's talk image compression! Services like Twitter will often apply aggressive levels of compression in order to reduce their storage space and decrease download times. This can have negative consequences for usability and image quality. Here's an example - this detail of a logo from my former employers, Vodafone. Solid red - with some fine detail in white: ![The Vodafone logo with the text "The future is exciting. Ready?"](https://steemitimages.com/DQmdUmk5EwMk8SfA1nVwmmzGhH3MgDqm2uqmrEzmq58LiTg/Vodafone%20Logo%20Uncompressed%20Transparent.png) If you upload it to Twitter, it will automatically be compressed to a low quality JPG. And this is what it looks like... ![The logo has been compressed. It looks disfigured.](https://steemitimages.com/DQmcbcEod9Wsm9er3XP2C9RHpM8YMrJ7nYFy7t7gMEAbs32/Twitter%20compressed%20image.jpeg) Yuck! Look at the grimy artefacts surrounding the text! By default, the image quality that most websites choose is 85%. That's not sufficient for images like this. ## How To Fix It PNGs have an interesting property that JPG images don't - they can be transparent. When Twitter sees even a *single* transparent pixel, it refuses to convert the original image and keeps it as a PNG. Using GIMP - or any other photo editing tool - you can crop out a pixel from the image: ![Screenshot of a graphics editor. One pixel has been removed from the image.](https://steemitimages.com/DQmV4HeLmgkgUHDQEQsCEiMN3duZaKzhX1T8Wj5ac3gsMZP/Pixel%20Cutout.png) You can see a demonstration at https://twitter.com/edent/status/969907247026442240 If you can't bear to have a "missing" pixel - you can [set a single pixel's opacity to 90%](https://twitter.com/Marcus_Noble_/status/969908207975092224). That will also prevent compression. ## Does this only work on Twitter? Sadly, yes. LinkedIn displays an 85% quality JPG in the preview. ![Screenshot of the LinkedIn page](https://steemitimages.com/DQmYokv56UkbCLAvto9n37Sm1emqJ2pACkJmuk81A24b3uC/LinkedInVoda.png) They will let you see the original PNG once you click through. In my experiments, Facebook compressed the transparent PNG to a 71% quality JPG. ![A heavily compressed image](https://steemitimages.com/DQmc35665X2bEbUpBK5LXA5P7SLdi63h9vuXUpfqkSXgtsZ/facebookvoda.jpg) That looks nasty! There appears to be no way to download the original. ## ReDeCentralise One of the advantages of hosting your own content is that you - the user - get to choose what is an appropriate trade-off between quality and filesize.

bodyWell at least you now know, or at least, for sure you'll know in 7 days that you can trust the STEEM blockchain to reward you a small amount of cryptocurrency in exchange for your brain work. Oh and welcome! if anything around here doesn't work the way you'd expect it to, or I can help in any other way, do let me know (you can use existing channels as well as this platform itself!) I've been here for about 18 months and have seen most of the weirdness that's possible. And again, sorry I only caught a little word or two with you this morning - some other time, soon I hope.

titleAdvertising Screens Hacked To Mine Crypto
bodySpotted in London. A large, Microsoft Windows-powered advertising hoarding has been hijacked. <img src="https://shkspr.mobi/blog/wp-content/uploads/2018/02/An-advertising-screen-takes-up-the-whole-wall-of-a-retail-store-in-London.jpg" alt="An advertising screen takes up the whole wall of a retail store in London" width="960" height="1280" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-29103" /> It's not uncommon to see broken-down Windows displays - I run <a href="https://windowsisbroken.tumblr.com/">https://windowsisbroken.tumblr.com/</a> - which is dedicated to pointing and laughing at such mistakes. But this is the first time I've seen a display repurposed for profit! <img src="https://shkspr.mobi/blog/wp-content/uploads/2018/02/The-display-shows-a-windows-desktop-with-a-variety-of-icons.-There-is-a-window-open.jpg" alt="The display shows a windows desktop with a variety of icons. A mining program for older computers. <img src="https://shkspr.mobi/blog/wp-content/uploads/2018/02/Close-up-of-the-window.-It-is-a-BitCoin-miner.jpg" alt="Close up of the window. Although, given that the hash-rate is zero, it may not be producing anything. There's no way to know whether this is an external hack, or if an "enterprising" employee has decided to repurpose these computers on the weekend, or if the advertising industry has decided that mining is more profitable than encouraging people to enjoy a cool refreshing glass of blue milk. titleUsability of Key Distribution in BlockChain Backed Electronic Voting
bodyI went to an event a few nights ago where some leading BlockChain organisations were showing off the power of Distributed Ledgers and how they will transform society. Not one of them mentioned users. There was talk of investors, stakeholders, corporations, smart-contract-backed entities. But no users. No real people who have to interact with their services. That's par for the course at this stage of an emerging technology - everyone is running away, shiny-eyed, into the future tech utopia, without any real understanding of how normal people behave. I'm going to keep this ~~rant~~ discussion high-level. The event was under the [Chatham House Rule](https://www.chathamhouse.org/about/chatham-house-rule) - so I'll avoid getting into specifics. An organisation wants to use "BlockChain" to secure elections. Their theory is that our current electoral systems are too easily hacked and there is no way to verify or audit the votes. I disagree with their supposition, but for the time being let's take their claims at face value. In order to cast my vote under their proposals - I need to cryptographically sign a transaction which is then fed into a Distributed Ledger. How do I get a public/private key-pair to allow me to do that? ## Diffie-Hellman Key Exchange The great cryptographic breakthrough of the 20th century was a way to distribute security keys without having to rely on a trusted courier. You can [watch my short explainer video of it online](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bfbjfd-R-3A). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bfbjfd-R-3A So a user can securely generate a key and then securely share it. How? Most normal users **simply cannot do this**. As soon as you put responsibility into the hands of the user, you leave them ripe for exploitation. Recently, a website which claimed to help you generate a secure key for your cryptocurrency wallet [stole $4 million from its users](https://thatoddmailbox.github.io/2018/01/28/iotaseed.html). Do a web search for "tax refund" or similar and you'll find that the top adverts are for [scummy companies which offer no real value](https://www.theguardian.com/money/2015/jun/06/copycat-esta-websites-us-visitors). How is the average user supposed to find a secure and reputable way to generate the key that they need to vote online? ## The State Distributes The Keys There is a charming <i>naïveté</i> to this. The state currently distributes passports and voting cards - so why not cryptographic keys? There are two fundamental problems. ### Trust How do I audit the votes on a BlockChain? I can easily verify that *my* vote has been correctly recorded by *\*waves hands\** technology. But that's only half the problem. How do I know that all the other votes on the ledger are genuine? If it is the state which generates the keys, what's to stop them from generating surplus, fraudulent keys? If they can see who *hasn't* yet voted - they can use a copy of their key to manipulate the vote. As we've seen, [centralised certificate issuers can be staggeringly incompetent](https://security.googleblog.com/2017/09/chromes-plan-to-distrust-symantec.html). They issue blatantly incorrect certificates on a disturbingly regular basis. What happens when the organisation responsible for generating the voting keys "accidentally" lets one of their sub-contractors do something which calls in to question the integrity of the voting process? ### Securing The Supply Chain But, let's assume that through the magic of technology, we can solve this problem. How do we get the keys to people? If we use the postal service, there's a [strong](https://www.stuff.co.nz/world/australia/97163982/australias-samesex-marriage-survey-corrupted-another-haul-of-votes-dumped) [risk](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/law-and-order/11560017/Postal-voting-fraud-is-easy-electoral-commissioner-says.html) of [theft](http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/election-2015-england-32517842). I guess that means we have to distribute the keys electronically? #### Securing The Individual How do I secure my voting key once I've got it? I have a degree in computer science and spend my days working on technology. [I still don't know if I set up my YubiKey correctly](https://shkspr.mobi/blog/2017/11/a-grumpy-look-at-using-a-yubico-neo-nfc-on-ubuntu-android/). But perhaps we can use people's phones. OK, so half the Androids in the country are running outdated software, are vulnerable to attack, and don't have a secure password on them. But... errr... THE BLOCKCHAIN WILL SOLVE ALL THESE PROBLEMS!!!! ...Sorry... Their zeal sometimes affects me... ## [Where Next](https://mitchbenn.bandcamp.com/track/toddlin-along-bonus-track)? Here's how I vote at the moment. * Register online * Receive a paper card in the post confirming the registration * Wander down the street to the polling place * Queue for two-minutes * Confirm my name and address * Draw an X on a piece of paper There are several drawbacks with this, it may be prone to fraud, it's not readily accessible, I can't audit my specific vote. But it is **quick** and it is **easy**. The current voting process - for all its flaws - is pretty damn usable and fairly cheap. What's the user story for blockchain voting? Will it be easier than the current method? One of the reasons why Plurality Voting (like First-Past-The-Post) is so popular is that *people understand it*. Perhaps there are forms of proportional representation which are fairer - but trying to understand how the [Condorcet method produces a winner](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Condorcet_method#Finding_the_winner) is *difficult*. ## Telling a story Humans are <i>Pan narrans</i> - the storytelling ape. And we like *simple* stories. Goodies and baddies. Winners and losers. What's the story for BlockChain voting? How easy is it to explain to someone who doesn't know or care about technology? Everything has to start with the user - not with the technology.
