| body | If you are stuck on an issue that requires "unconventional" solutions, indulge in the luxury of a few nights of rest. That sleep is fundamental to strengthen learning and creativity is a known fact, but the role played by its various phases is still discussed. Now a new research hypothesis, which will be declined in the next five years, proposes that REM sleep (phase that repeats several times during the night and is characterized by rapid eye movements) and non-REM (composed of alternating light sleep phases) to periods of deep sleep) work together, and in a complementary way, to facilitate creative thinking. HOW WE ARE THE CANVAS. The theory of Penny Lewis, a neuroscientist at the School of Psychology of the University of Cardiff (Scotland), is illustrated in the magazine Trends in Cognitive Sciences. "Imagine that you already have all the memories you need, but have to restructure them - create connections between thoughts that you did not connect, integrate elements that you did not have integrated," says Lewis. Various studies indicate that these unexpected relationships between known elements can more easily emerge after a night's sleep: Lewis has analyzed the scientific literature on the subject to elaborate a model on how the different stages of sleep contribute to the "miracle". |

| body | Of male hormonal contraceptives we have been talking about for several years, but a clinical study that will start in 2018 could be the most important and promising ever attempted so far. Researchers at the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development have developed a gel that temporarily blocks sperm production. From April 2018, and for four years, they will use it to over 400 couples in the USA, UK, Italy, Chile, Sweden and Kenya to verify efficacy and ease of administration. WHAT IT CONTAINS. The gel is based on two synthetic hormones, a version of testosterone and one of progestin (a hormone substance similar to progesterone). The latter prevents the testes from producing sufficient testosterone doses to guarantee normal amounts of spermatozoa. Synthetic testosterone simply serves to ensure that there are no hormonal imbalances (but not to form spermatozoa). WHERE DOES IT WORK? The product is spread on the skin, but not, as you might think, in the genital area: half a coffee cup is applied every day on the shoulders and arms, and it is absorbed in a minute. If you remember to do it consistently, the combination of the two hormones suppresses the production of sperm for 72 hours. Volunteers will use the gel for at least 4 months, while their sperm levels will be monitored (to prevent pregnancy, the count should go down to less than one million per milliliter of semen). Only then can partners also abandon other forms of contraception. NOTO DA TEMPO. The product was already proven effective in a first six-month trial carried out in 2012, but in that case the gels were two, to spread on distinct parts of the body. The new formulation is easier to administer. OTHER EXPERIMENTS. Earlier this year a male contraceptive gel had proven effective in macaques, and with reversible effects. In that case, however, the method was totally different: the product mechanically blocked the ducts that carry the sperm from the testicles to the urethra. Other forms of male contraception based on hormone injections proved to be effective, but with significant and unacceptable side effects (such as depression). If the gel were to pass the clinical tests, the biggest obstacles to its landing on the market will perhaps be in terms of acceptability. For centuries, contraception has been socially considered a predominantly female task. |

| title | coffe time!! |
| body | In the long discussion about the more or less beneficial effects of coffee on our health, a study by the International Agency for Research on Cancer and the Imperial College of London, conducted on about half a million European citizens, according to which people who drink more coffee a day live on average longer than those who do not take it. The research was based on data collected in a previous survey, which recorded the state of health and diet of 521,330 people, aged over 35 years, followed for 16 years. IT ALSO GOOD FOR THE LIVER! Analyzing the daily coffee consumption of the survivors and the 42,000 people who died during the study, the researchers found that a higher consumption of coffee is associated with a lower risk of death, especially for some types of diseases, such as those cardiovascular and those related to the digestive system. Subsequent analyzes have revealed that coffee drinkers have on average a healthier liver than those who never consume this drink. |

| title | INTERNET ...WHAT?? |
| body | How do you know you have a problem? It's probably not difficult to understand and accept if you make a 3-day online gambling marathon. In Beijing, a man started playing online at an internet point and after 3 days collapsed until he reached a coma. He was immediately taken to the hospital where he died shortly after arriving, without the doctors being able to do anything to save his life. According to witnesses, in all that time the man has never moved from the computer, without eating or sleeping. He had spent about $ 1,500 last month. The police did not want to declare the name of the victim, he only said that he was a man in his thirties. Several computers have been seized and will serve as evidence, while in China Internet addiction has become a problem afflicting around 30 million people. |

| title | ICOs and Tokens |
| body | ICOs and Tokens Lately we have heard of ICOs as the new mode of private funding for raising capital. Many companies have launched their own ICO (eg Aidcoin) and those who have not already done so are thinking about it. How does an ICO work? An Initial Coin Offer is nothing more than a promise, possible through smart contracts, to return the capital raised through tokens. I, a company, release a whitepaper containing my business plan and ask to be financed, in exchange for funding I will issue tokens investors. At this point we need to make a distinction between the various tokens models: Equity tokens: similar to the most common shares, they respond to a right claimed by the shareholder against the company. This type of token, at the moment, can not be released because illegal. The current legislation, by assimilating equity tokens to shares, imposes corporate and tax requirements that prohibit exchanges from listing them - in jargon, adding them to the products they offer - and consequently trading them on the markets. Utility tokens: they are tokens that do not comply with the current regime in the field of equity securities because, in addition to being tradable on the markets, they have a concrete use within the platform. Since the ways in which tokens are generated and released are established beforehand, unlike what happens for cryptocurrencies, they can not be undermined. Differences between tokens and cryptocurrencies Overflowing on the fact that "cryptocurrency" is a fairly improper term - as we know, at present, digital currencies lack at least two of the three characteristics attributable to coins (value reserve, unit of measure, medium of exchange) we must however do some of discernment. The word "cryptocurrency" refers to anything that has value and is exchangeable, in an encrypted manner, between individuals without the need to rely on a third party guarantor. This definition goes beyond the characteristics of the instrument, it could be a coin or a token. The coins and tokens are nothing but a subset of cryptocurrencies. Coins: most of the coins on the market are the result of forks (bifurcations) of the Bitcoin blockchain. Each coin has its own reference blockchain and has a protocol that can only be used on it. Tokens: tokens are a digital representation of any asset (equity token) or function (utility token) issued by a dApp (decentralized application) normally built on another blockchain. Unlike coins, there is no need to build a chain of ad hoc blocks. In fact, using templates prepared by the main blockchain, tokens can be released much less burdensome and faster than a normal coin. The standard protocol (template) that uses the Ethereum blockchain. Recall that 85% of tokens are generated by the Ethereum platform (ERC20). |

| title | Italian, the language of angels |
| body | Italian, the language of angels for Thomas Mann, is the most romantic language in the world according to a survey conducted some 320 years ago by 320 linguists from the London company Today translations, which offers translations and interpreters in over 200 languages. This is in itself a curious news and nothing more, but it helps us to consider a more general and noteworthy question. For foreigners, the Italian language is extremely attractive: it is not by chance that it is the fourth (or fifth) most studied language in the world. To understand what our language likes so much, just scroll through one of the many lists of reasons to learn Italian on the web. For example, the list published by the University of Princeton says that Italian is sound and beautiful, and is the reference language for those who love art, music, architecture, opera, food ... many of the pleasant things in life, in short. He says that Italian is the language closest to Latin, and that 60% of English vocabulary comes from Latin: so learning Italian also helps to speak English better. And remember that in the US universities enrollment in Italian language courses are growing. The attractiveness of a language is not strictly proportional to the number of speakers. "Studying Italian is not like studying Urdu, the nineteenth most spoken language in the world (Italian is eighteenth)", says Dianne Hales, author of La bella lingua. With Italian "come into contact with history, art, religion, music, food, fashion, cinema, science - all that Western civilization has invented". It seems, however, that we Italians, who (more or less) we speak Italian forever, of all this little amounts. Moreover, a characteristic feature of national behavior consists in systematically underestimating what is beautiful and desirable belongs to us, from landscape to art to lifestyle, from creativity to enterprising, to language, in fact, renouncing to valorize it in an appropriate manner. . Renouncing, then, to practice the indispensable maintenance works, both tangible and intangible. And renouncing even to be, rightly, proud. We would like to change attitude, though. The fact is that the attractiveness of a language is an important factor of soft power. The English-speaking countries have known it since the days of the cold war. China knows that it is making great efforts to spread the Chinese study. And the soft power thing is anything but trivial. For now, Soft Power does not have an accredited translation. On the net I found "soft power", "light power", "peaceful power" and even "soft power". Here I choose to use "soft power" in alternation with the much more widespread English term. The concept of soft power was formulated in the late eighties by Joseph Nye, a political scientist and professor at Harvard. In a brilliant Ted conference, Nye defines power as "nothing but the ability to influence others to achieve the desired results". You can exercise power, Nye says, in three ways: with the stick, that is, threatening and using force. With carrots, ie using money. But there is a third way: to convince others to spontaneously desire to do what we want them to do. And this is soft power: pure seductive capacity. If the hard power of the force moves people to jostling, the soft power attracts it and arouses its consent. Basically, the concept of soft power makes us understand that seduction is as powerful as coercion or money. And perhaps even more powerful, because it is more subtle and permanent. Nye adds that using the soft power results in "saving both sticks and carrots". Since soft power is made up of reputation and desirability, a nation can exercise it effectively even without being a major economic or military power. There is an international ranking of soft power: in 2016 Italy is eleventh, ahead of Spain and after the Netherlands, and is gaining positions. Promoting the Italian language (and perhaps starting to treat it better, even at home) can help us to have prestige in the world and to increase our soft power. And let's face it: for Italy, promoting Italian, already so desirable in itself, is much easier than it is for Pakistan to promote Urdu. Or for China to promote Chinese. But not only that: promoting Italian can help our companies to spread and defend their products abroad, positioning them in the high-end segment just by being authentically Italian. Promoting Italian (and using it for product names, for advertising, for brands ...) also helps to counteract the deteriorating phenomenon of Italian sounding: products made abroad, which are dressed in Italian just "speaking" Italian . It's a joke worth 60 billion euros and 300 thousand jobs. Perception is (also) a cognitive fact, and not only sensory. It means that it is influenced by how much each person believes, thinks and knows, and the expectations he has. For this reason, in the world, the aroma of a coffee with an Italian name is perceived as better, a dress with an Italian brand looks more elegant, an object with an Italian name looks more beautiful, a car with an Italian name appears more desirable. Foreign companies know this, and it would be better if even Italian companies always remembered it. All this - and I imagine, much more - will be discussed during the second edition of the General States of the Italian language in the world. Whoever wants to, can follow the entire event live on foreign.it. Whoever wants, can also take a look at the newborn portal of the Italian language. |

There is an international ranking of soft power: in 2016 Italy is eleventh, ahead of Spain and after the Netherlands, and is gaining positions.\n\nPromoting the Italian language (and perhaps starting to treat it better, even at home) can help us to have prestige in the world and to increase our soft power. And let's face it: for Italy, promoting Italian, already so desirable in itself, is much easier than it is for Pakistan to promote Urdu. Or for China to promote Chinese.\n\nBut not only that: promoting Italian can help our companies to spread and defend their products abroad, positioning them in the high-end segment just by being authentically Italian. Promoting Italian (and using it for product names, for advertising, for brands ...) also helps to counteract the deteriorating phenomenon of Italian sounding: products made abroad, which are dressed in Italian just \"speaking\" Italian . It's a joke worth 60 billion euros and 300 thousand jobs.\n\nPerception is (also) a cognitive fact, and not only sensory.\n\nIt means that it is influenced by how much each person believes, thinks and knows, and the expectations he has. For this reason, in the world, the aroma of a coffee with an Italian name is perceived as better, a dress with an Italian brand looks more elegant, an object with an Italian name looks more beautiful, a car with an Italian name appears more desirable. Foreign companies know this, and it would be better if even Italian companies always remembered it.\n\nAll this - and I imagine, much more - will be discussed during the second edition of the General States of the Italian language in the world. Whoever wants to, can follow the entire event live on foreign.it. Whoever wants, can also take a look at the newborn portal of the Italian language.",

| body | Already at the age of seven months children are able to understand some mental states of other people, that is, they possess a "theory of the mind", albeit partial. The discovery, which took place thanks to a new technique of non-invasive brain imaging, belies the hypothesis that this capacity does not develop before the age of 2-4 years. The hypothesis that as early as seven months children are able to understand the mental states of other people - that is, they have at least a basic "theory of the mind" - has received a new confirmation from a brain imaging study conducted by researchers University of Illinois, which report on the "Journal of Neuroscience". However, since children of that age obviously can not explain their perception of the outside world, some psychologists have raised doubts that they are able to grasp the mental states of others before 2 or even 4 years. This is why Daniel Hyde and colleagues decided to monitor the brain activity of some young children as they watched the toy scene in the wrong place and then compared it to the brain activity of adults who were shown the same scene. In particular, the researchers focused on the Temporo-parietal junction (TPJ) activity, a brain region that other studies had indicated as involved in the theory of mind in adults. "We wanted to see if there is a parallel between activity in the temporometal junction in young children and adults," Hyde said. "The logic is that if this region responds in a similar way, we can make a more direct comparison with what happens in adults and older children ". Normally, the monitoring of brain activity is performed with functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), but it has some drawbacks - such as confinement of the subject in a restricted environment during the examination, or sensitivity to movements - which does not make it suitable for be used on small children. Hyde and colleagues then turned to a very recent technique, functional near infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS, functional near infrared spectroscopy) that offers performances almost comparable to fMRI in the monitoring of not particularly deep brain regions. The fNIRS, Hyde said, "is particularly suitable for children: just put a cap on your head; they can sit in the lap of the parent and look at everything that is presented to them. They probably feel more comfortable and it is more natural than other methods ". The team was able to verify that the temporal-parietal junction of some seven-month-old children responded very similarly to that of the adults during the observation of the moved toy scene, thus adding a new confirmation to the presence of a theory of the mind already at seven months of age. "The little ones, like the adults, have shown a peak of activity in the TPJ looking at the scene where an actor does not realize that the toy has been moved and therefore feeds a false belief about his position," Hyde said. However, he added, the new findings do not suggest that children have a fully developed theory of mind as early as the first year of life. Rather, the observed phenomenon would be "a basis on which to develop a deeper understanding of the thoughts and beliefs of others". Previous studies, conducted by monitoring the direction of gaze and fixation times of young children who looked at people who hid objects, indicated that children tend to notice when someone has an incorrect belief, for example, if they are looking for a toy in one place wrong because he did not see that in the meantime he was moved elsewhere. |

| title | Blue eyes babies |
| body | While waiting for a child, it is fun trying to figure out who parents can look like. Will the hair be from mom or dad? And what will be the color of the eyes? The newborn eye color, as we know, could change with growth. So let's see if the blue-eyed babies change their eyes color or not. The blue eyes are of this color because they contain a small amount of melanin and because they are related to the density of proteins in the stroma, or the structure of the eye. In January 2008, a Danish study showed that a specific mutation in the HERC2 gene that regulates OCA2 expression causes blue eyes. People with blue eyes can sometimes appear rather shy and very cautious in life. Having blue eyes may have advantages especially for women, as according to a study conducted in the United States, women with blue eyes and in general with light eyes are more likely to bear the pains of childbirth than women with dark eyes. When a child is born, his eyes are always gray or blue because they contain little melanin. The latter is produced by specialized cells, called melanocytes, which are activated only in the presence of light, and since the baby has been for nine months in the dark in the womb, the melanocytes begin to activate only after delivery. Only at the first birthday will you really understand the newborn eyes color. Newborn eyes color The newborn eyes color, a genetic feature, not always as obvious as one believes. After a while from the birth, you begin to understand the definitive baby eyes color. In particular, the baby will have blue eyes if his melanocytes secrete little melanin, green or hazelnut if they contain more. When the melanocytes work a lot, the newborn eye color turns brown: this is the most common color. Eye color The eye color, according to recent studies, also vary the personality of an individual. For example, people with green eyes are considered particularly fascinating and mysterious. This is stated in a study published by the Impulse Corporetion of Los Angeles. According to Dr. Hamadi Kallel, who has studied eye color for a long time, people with green eyes are original, creative, they work very well under pressure, they are rather mysterious and self-sufficient, they get angry and are often unpredictable. A different study, instead, he found that dark-eyed people are generally better in sports because they tend to struggle a lot to achieve their goals. In general, people with dark eyes are considered mysterious and pleasant. Those with a light brown or hazelnut-colored eyes are independent and self-confident. The gray eye color is rare and actually represents a variation in the color of blue eyes. According to experts, sometimes people with light gray eyes have a multi-faceted personality with whom they struggle to stay in balance and have to work hard to be taken seriously by others. |

| body | A trouble that the colossus of Jeff Bezos has tried to cut off many times, but with little construct. Because the network behind fake reviews is structured in a solid way and has organized a very difficult system to unhinge: the product is truly purchased by the user, so for Amazon it is a certified purchase. Too bad that the next day, the seller (or whoever for him) provides through an external channel, to refund the purchase with the addition of a compensation of a few dollars. An untraceable parallel road that puts Amazon in check and makes the lives of thousands of honest sellers complicated, which are struggling to stay afloat, in this sea of fake reviews. On the eCommerce portal most important in the world, in short, there is a hell of untrustworthy reviews. Feedback rigged with compensation, without the Seattle company being able to do anything about it. The huge business of sales on Amazon With just over 760 billion dollars, Amazon is the second richest company in the world, after Apple. The CEO, Jeff Bezos, recently revealed that more than 100 million registered users of Prime service worldwide. Amazon operates 13 third-party vendors 'marketplaces and leases space to host these vendors' products in over 150 stores. According to the budgeted data, in 2017, third-party merchants fueled Amazon's turnover with $ 32 billion, and nearly 300,000 new sellers joined the market only last year. Selling on Amazon is a huge business. Buying positive reviews is a winning way, and the best way to get them, it seems, is to buy them. The power of reviews on purchases In an old 2011 survey, 87% of consumers said that a positive review influenced their decision to buy a product. Customer reviews are the second most trusted source of product information when making an online purchase. But the real problem is that only 3-10% of customers leave a comment. This is why the black market for fake reviews is out of date. The secret groups of the reviews The business of false reviews is born on the Net, on hidden channels (closed Facebook groups, but also simple forums accessible by invitation). There are sellers, often Chinese, "intermediaries" and reviewers. The seller is usually willing to pay a sum between 4 and 5 dollars for each review: it is an investment, a sort of marketing campaign. When a new product arrives to be pushed, the "intermediaries" post recall messages for the interested reviewers. And in a few days that product climbs the Amazon charts for positive reviews. Yeah, pity they are false. Amazon's (useless) commitment It must be said that over the years, Bezos has invested time and money to try to stem the phenomenon of fake reviews. In fact, compared to a few years ago, leaving a comment on a product on Amazon is much more complicated: it is necessary that a purchase is verified, namely that Amazon is able to track the transaction of trade between user and seller. But the system devised bypassed this constraint, and generated - according to a survey reported by Buzzfeed - over 5 million false reviews now on Amazon. About 10% of the total. An untruthful review, written for remuneration, does not necessarily mean that a product is inferior. But it triggers a big problem: the difficulty for the consumer unaware of knowing whether or not what he is buying is a quality product. |

| title | What happens when you stop smoking? |
| body | What happens when you stop smoking? Over the past 10-12 years, different research groups have studied how the body of smokers reacts when they stop smoking. The results emerged are really very interesting. In fact, already 20 minutes after the last cigarette, the heart rhythm and blood pressure tend to assume values closer to normal. After 2 hours, the first nicotine withdrawal symptoms begin to appear and, after 12 hours, the levels of carbon monoxide - inhaled substance when smoking - descend to acceptable levels. After 48 hours, smell and taste improve significantly and, after 3 days, there are no traces of nicotine in the body. After 2-3 weeks, the blood circulation and lung function improve significantly, to the point that the physical efforts are much simpler and do not cause the same stress. Beginning after the first month, the lung tissue begins a healing process of the duration, in the most serious cases, of even 9 months. During this process, the ciliary system of the lungs returns to normal. After a year, the risk of getting a coronary artery disease reduced by 50% (compared, of course, to smoking). After 5-10 years, the risk of developing a tumor in the throat, bladder, mouth and esophagus was reduced by 50%; the same applies to lung cancer. Finally, after 15 years since the last cigarette, the probability of suffering from a heart disease or stroke is the same as a person who has never smoked. | title | FACEBOOK AND BLOCK CHAIN... |
| body | Facebook is ready to change its leadership with the most important reorganization since it was founded fifteen years ago. The decision was taken directly by the CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, and follows the privacy scandal that has involved the technological giant in recent months. Recode writes that he remembers how the group will open to blockchain technology and will be divided into three areas: a group dedicated to "family apps" (Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp and Messenger); a new division that will deal with new platforms, including the one linked to the blockchain; a division called "central product services" that will manage advertising and security. The blockchain division will be led by David Marcus, who confirmed his new position on Twitter. Marcus arrived at Facebook in 2014 after working on PayPal and in recent years he led Messenger. Marcus also has a seat on the board of directors of Coinbase, one of the most important cryptocurrency exchange platforms. Zuckerberg's decision comes after the Cambridge Analytica scandal, a consulting firm accused of having used the data of 87 million Facebook users to advertise targeted and encourage Donald Trump in the 2016 presidential elections. After a slight rise (+0) , 52%) in the after market, the group's shares started to lose share. |

| title | CANCER! |
| body | A group of Italian researchers has discovered a new protein linked to the onset of colorectal cancer that could become "target" of precision therapies. The research project, funded by Airc and coordinated by the University of Salento, promises to counteract a form of cancer that remains at the top of the "big killer" ranking, as well as the second for frequency in Italy and in the world. In the case of colorectal cancer, the protein called beta-catenin is "turned on", that is, it shows an exaggerated expression, only in cancer cells. Despite the key role that the molecule plays in the early stages of the onset of this tumor, smart drugs directed against it have so far shown limited therapeutic efficacy, managing to block the proliferation but not the survival of cancer cells. The project has discovered the link of beta-catenin with a molecular circuit that can stabilize the cancer cell from within, representing a new "heel of Achilles" specific to colon cancer. |
