| body | Of course, I want to move away from the city rush, but I definitely don’t want to live alone. Becoming a recluse is not my goal. And in general, right now I’m looking into different house projects, and also considering an ADU log cabin with front porch, so that friends, guests, and relatives can stay over comfortably. It feels like the perfect option, when you can host everyone without sacrificing your own comfort. |

| body | If I decided to build a wooden house, I’d want something more solid. Actually, there are houses now, specifically log cabins, that go up fast but are still warm and sturdy. I looked at the interiors of finished ones when I was googling how to brighten up a log cabin, and they really look super cozy. I think those houses are honestly the best option I’ve seen so far. |

| title | The Living Soil: A Documentary... |
| body |
http://www.ecosnippets.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/living-soil-film.jpg

Our soils support 95 percent of all food production, and by 2060, our soils will be asked to give us as much food as we have consumed in the last 500 years. They filter our water. They are one of our most cost-effective reservoirs for sequestering carbon. They are our foundation for biodiversity. And they are vibrantly alive, teeming with 10,000 pounds of biological life in every acre.

Yet in the last 150 years, we’ve lost half of the basic building block that makes soil productive. The societal and environmental costs of soil loss and degradation in the United States alone are now estimated to be as high as $85 billion every single year. Like any relationship, our living soil needs our tenderness. It’s time we changed everything we thought we knew about soil. Let’s make this the century of living soil.

This 60-minute documentary features innovative farmers and soil health experts from throughout the U.S. Accompanying lesson plans for college and high school students will can also be found on this site. "Living Soil" was directed by Chelsea Myers and Tiny Attic Productions based in Columbia, Missouri, and produced by the Soil Health Institute through the generous support of The Samuel Roberts Noble Foundation. | body |
http://www.ecosnippets.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/growing-vegetables-for-profit.jpg

In this video I’m going to show you how to start a farm from scratch in 7 steps.

In fact, this step-by-step tutorial is the exact same approach we used to start organic farming on our small farm, that allowed us to farm full time in our first year and makes us a comfortable living doing something we love.

Whether you want to start an urban farming business or larger scale market gardening, here are the steps I’m going to cover that will help you start a farm from scratch and become a farmer.

In step 1 I’m going over the crucial research phase of starting a farm. At this point you’ll start identifying your ideal customers, get to know the demands in your area, and you’ll start to identify what crops are in demand.

From there we go over to creating a design for your farm that takes into consideration the day-to-day tasks and operations. This design will be optimized to increase the efficiency, practicality and ultimately will help you build a profitable farm.

After the creation of the farm design, we go into the details of creating a crop plan that ensures a continuous supply of crops during the growing season. I’m going to share the step-by-step of how we plan our production each year on our farm, that helps us supply our customers with their organic vegetables.

Once the crop plan has been made, we go over to the initial preparation of your land. I explain the different options you have and my personal favorite that allows us to grow great organic vegetables, without the hassle of having to worry about weeding all the time.

After covering the initial preparation of your land in this step by step tutorial on how to start a farm from scratch, we’ll cover some best practices on growing, selling, and marketing your crops.

At the end, I wrap up the video with one of the most important steps you can take that will help you optimize your production, increase your farm profits, and will help you in your journey of starting a farm from scratch and will help you become a farmer. | body |
http://www.ecosnippets.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/3D-Printed-Houses-Made-From-Hemp.png

With 3D-printing tech, hemp is going to become even more of a realistic alternative to traditional materials...

More architects and builders are turning to hemp as a sustainable material to use when building homes, and with 3D-printing technology, hemp is going to become even more of a realistic alternative to traditional materials, which are not environmentally friendly and in very short supply.

An Australian based biotechnology company called Mirreco, has recently unveiled plans for 3D printed hemp homes. The company cites environmental concerns as some of their primary motivations.

The company has developed hemp panels that can be used in both residential and commercial building projects. Furthermore, the panels can be manufactured directly through a 3D-printer, and then used to build the structure of the home. The floors, walls and roof will all be made using hemp biomass, and the windows will incorporate cutting-edge technology that allows light to pass through glass where it is converted into electricity.”

Mirreco touts the carbon-neutral status of their building process and materials, but there are other ways that hemp homes can be beneficial or the environment. Beyond the concerns of greenhouse gas emissions, there is simply not enough sand to sustain the increasing demand for conventional concrete. This poses yet another environmental crisis, as the specific type of sand needed for concrete is often harvested from riverbeds, which destroys ecosystems and threatens the biodiversity of plants, fish, and animals.

It isn’t something that people think about often, but sand is the second most used natural resource in the world, surpassed only by water. This high demand often creates an incentive for criminal cartels to fight over resource-rich territories in the developing world, disrupting the local ecosystem and terrorizing civilians who attempt to get in their way. If the construction industry were to fully adopt a renewable alternative like hemp, it could radically improve some of these social, environmental and economic concerns.

Hemp can actually provide sustainable solutions in many other industries as well. A new study has suggested that hemp batteries could be more powerful than graphene or lithium, which could be a major breakthrough, considering how much toxic pollution comes from disposed batteries.

It is important to note that Mirreco is not the first company to build a house out of hemp, that sort of thing has been happening for a few years now. Mirreco is merely the first to use 3D printing with these materials, at this scale (article via TruthTheory).

If you like this idea, be sure to share it with your friends and inspire someone you know. Anything becomes possible with just a little inspiration…

Posted from my blog with SteemPress : http://www.ecosnippets.com/environmental/these-environmentally-friendly-3d-printed-houses-are-made-from-hemp/

|

The company cites environmental concerns as some of their primary motivations.
\n
The company has developed hemp panels that can be used in both residential and commercial building projects. Furthermore, the panels can be manufactured directly through a 3D-printer, and then used to build the structure of the home. Mirreco says that the panels are “structurally sound, easy to produce, and provide superior thermal performance.”...
\n
\n\n<blockquote class=\"instagram-media\" data-instgrm-captioned data-instgrm-permalink=\"https://www.instagram.com/p/B3Oq9bfjcal/?utm_source=ig_embed&utm_campaign=loading\" data-instgrm-version=\"12\" style=\" background:#FFF; The floors, walls and roof will all be made using hemp biomass, and the windows will incorporate cutting-edge technology that allows light to pass through glass where it is converted into electricity.”
\n
Mirreco touts the carbon-neutral status of their building process and materials, but there are other ways that hemp homes can be beneficial or the environment. Beyond the concerns of greenhouse gas emissions, there is simply not enough sand to sustain the increasing demand for conventional concrete. This poses yet another environmental crisis, as the specific type of sand needed for concrete is often harvested from riverbeds, which destroys ecosystems and threatens the biodiversity of plants, fish, and animals.
\n
It isn’t something that people think about often, but sand is the second most used natural resource in the world, surpassed only by water. This high demand often creates an incentive for criminal cartels to fight over resource-rich territories in the developing world, disrupting the local ecosystem and terrorizing civilians who attempt to get in their way. If the construction industry were to fully adopt a renewable alternative like hemp, it could radically improve some of these social, environmental and economic concerns.
\n
Hemp can actually provide sustainable solutions in many other industries as well. A new study has suggested that hemp batteries could be more powerful than graphene or lithium, which could be a major breakthrough, considering how much toxic pollution comes from disposed batteries.
\n
It is important to note that Mirreco is not the first company to build a house out of hemp, that sort of thing has been happening for a few years now. Mirreco is merely the first to use 3D printing with these materials, at this scale (article via TruthTheory).
\n
If you like this idea, be sure to share it with your friends and inspire someone you know. Anything becomes possible with just a little inspiration…
\n

Posted from my blog with SteemPress : http://www.ecosnippets.com/environmental/these-environmentally-friendly-3d-printed-houses-are-made-from-hemp/

",

| title | Cheap Off Grid Homestead - Building A Cabin From Pallet Wood... |
| body |
http://www.ecosnippets.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/11/off-grid-pallet-wood-homestead.jpg

Check it out as we build a cheap off grid cabin using free pallet wood. We saved money building the pallet wood cabin by using recycled pallets. This is a great off grid wilderness project as pallet wood is light and easy to carry into the forest. It is also easy to work with using hand tools.

Many people do not have the space, time or money to build a log cabin. But building a tiny home off grid is still achievable using cheap or even free materials, and that is where pallet wood works so well.

Although only small, this one man cabin has a raised bed, folding table, bookshelf and chair - all made from pallet wood. We fit it out with a woodstove to heat it through the winter months and we installed a pipe cooking oven and water tank to boil water and cook food on. The stove heats the cabin up really fast as the cabin is only small. This small hut in the woods has no electricity or power, but that isn't needed.

To begin with, we started to break the pallets down into useable timber to build the foundations and the frame of the cabin. For the roof we used recycled tin from an old barn roof. We then used an old garden shed window and fit this to the western wall of the cabin. Once the framework and structure of the cabin was complete, we began to some pallet wood projects and focused on building furniture for the inside of the cabin.

We cooked our food over fire using a tripod lashed together bushcraft style until we installed the woodstove. Then we used cast iron cooking gear and the oven to cook up bigger meals. We learned many building skills on this project and it was great to build with hand tools. The pallet cabin still stands to this day, and we use it as a bushcraft camp to practice wilderness survival skills, primitive technology and as a base camp to create more off grid films for you guys.

But the main aim of this project was more about a father and son spending time in the outdoors working on free diy projects and learning how to become self reliant and save money for a happier lifestyle. We hope this video helps to inspire you to get outside. Check it out below...

If you like this idea, be sure to share it with your friends and inspire someone you know. | title | How Mississippi Shanty Boats Helped Build A Culture... |
| body |
http://www.ecosnippets.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/mississippi-shanty-boats.jpg

“I do not know much about gods; but I think that the river Is a strong brown god—sullen, untamed and intractable” - “Dry Salvages”, T.S. Eliot

Long before Wes Modes began planning a journey down the Mississippi, he started building a traditional barge-bottom houseboat in a California backyard out of rustic reclaimed materials (e.g. old fences and chicken coops). Once his shantyboat was complete he hatched a plan to transport it across the country from Santa Cruz to Minnesota to begin a “Huck-Finn style” journey down the iconic American river.

Following in the footsteps of Harlan and Anna Hubbard, whose eight-year journey down the Mississippi and Ohio rivers was chronicled in Harlan’s book “Shantytown”, Modes launched his own float 70 years later. His “Secret History of American River People” is part personal adventure and part research project, collecting stories of “river people” along the banks.

Complete with lofted bed, compost toilet and full-kitchen (propane-powered camp stove and plumbed sink), his 10-by-8-foot houseboat cabin serves as both floating home and mobile office for his summertime sojourns.

After two summers on the Mississippi recording stories for his “Secret History of American River People”, Modes (along with first mate Lauren Benz) set out to tackle the 652-mile Tennessee River from Knoxville to Paducah, Kentucky. We caught up with him in Knoxville, which he pointed out is also the setting for Cormac McCarthy’s semi-autobiographical shantyboat novel “Suttree”.

Nearly everywhere he goes, Modes has discovered that the times of shantyboat living have largely disappeared. “I just finished an interview with somebody,” he explained from Volunteer Landing in Knoxville.

“He was saying when he was a kid growing up in the sixties there were people living along the banks of some of the creeks and the river, but by the mid-to-late seventies those people were all gone. And by the eighties they had renewed the riverfront and by the nineties… all those people who used to live along the rivers in little homemade shacks and shanty boats were instead displaced.”

Modes uses crowdfunding to help pay for his trips where he hopes to tell the stories of people who don’t usually make the history books.

“I think that’s kind of like this idea of postmodern history in which you’re examining the little tales of people, the tales of you and I, the relationships in our lives, and the adventures we’d had and the hardships we’ve endured.

Those are a form of history that is just as valid and just as legitimate as history with a capital H: history that makes the dominant narrative of the people who generally are the victors and the people who win and the people who write the history books." | body |
http://www.ecosnippets.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/living-in-a-beautiful-tiny-house-tent.jpg

This young family are doing things a bit differently! They gave up their city lives in Southern California to live a debt free and simple life, close to nature in a beautiful tiny house tent in New Mexico!

Their home is by no means a normal tent, but more like a tiny house cabin with canvas exterior. Certainly, this home is glamping taken to the extreme! This unique and beautifully crafted home provides all the shelter the family needs while allowing them to truly live more connected to the natural world and the beautiful gardens surrounding their house tent.

Tent living is not without it's challenges, but for this family the benefits greatly outweigh the disadvantages. It's allowed them to deeply connect, live a more simple, debt free and rewarding lifestyle and most importantly grow together as a family, with love and quality time being a corner stone of each day. The system will continuously create both liquid and solid fertilizer and close the food-waste loop.

Compost worms - red wrigglers, tiger, Indian night crawlers, African night crawlers, etc. are not earthworms. They eat their own weight every day, and the only thing they don’t like to eat are citrus peels and stuff from the onion family.

Every day, the system can produce a few liters of fermented worm juice. This can be used as is or watered down. Additionally, the solid results inside the bucket are worm castings, something that, in many ways, is better than compost. It’s got loads of beneficial bacteria.

You can use an ordinary bathtub, set up to drain as normal. Get a piece of wire and wrap it in screen to cover up the bath plug to act as filter.
